We study the AC field induced current peaks of a spin blockaded double quantum dot with spin-orbit interaction. The AC field modulates either the interdot tunnel coupling or the energy detuning, and we choose the AC field frequency range to induce two singlet-triplet transitions giving rise to two current peaks. We show that for a large detuning the two current peaks can be significantly stronger when the AC field modulates the tunnel coupling, thus making the detection of the spin-orbit gap more efficient. We also demonstrate the importance of the time dependence of the spin-orbit interaction.
Transport properties of the two-orbital Kondo effect involving both spin and orbital (pseudospin) degrees of freedom were examined in a parallel double quantum dot with a sufficient interdot Coulomb interaction and negligibly small interdot tunneling. The Kondo effect was observed at the interdot Coulomb blockade region with degeneracies of both spin and orbital degrees of freedom. When the orbital degeneracy is lifted by applying a finite detuning, the Kondo resonance exhibits a triple-peak structure, indicating that both spin and orbital contributions are involved.
A global quantitative picture of the phonon-induced two-electron spin relaxation in GaAs double quantum dots is presented using highly accurate numerical calculations. Wide regimes of interdot coupling, magnetic field magnitude and orientation, and detuning are explored in the presence of a nuclear bath. Most important, the unusually strong magnetic anisotropy of the singlet-triplet relaxation can be controlled by detuning switching the principal anisotropy axes: a protected state becomes unprotected upon detuning, and vice versa. It is also established that nuclear spins can dominate spin rel…
Long-distance transfer of quantum information in architectures based on quantum dot spin qubits will be necessary for their scalability. One way of achieving it is to simply move the electron between two quantum registers. Precise control over the electron shuttling through a chain of tunnel-coupled quantum dots is possible when interdot energy detunings are changed adiabatically. Deterministic character of shuttling is however endangered by coupling of the transferred electron to thermal reservoirs: sources of fluctuations of electric fields, and lattice vibrations. We theoretically analyse h…
We report the observation of multiple harmonic generation in electric dipole spin resonance in an InAs nanowire double quantum dot. The harmonics display a remarkable detuning dependence: near the interdot charge transition as many as eight harmonics are observed, while at large detunings we only observe the fundamental spin resonance condition. The detuning dependence indicates that the observed harmonics may be due to Landau-Zener transition dynamics at anticrossings in the energy level spectrum.
We demonstrate a substantial improvement in the spin-exchange gate using symmetric control instead of conventional detuning in GaAs spin qubits, up to a factor-of-six increase in the quality factor of the gate. For symmetric operation, nanosecond voltage pulses are applied to the barrier that controls the interdot potential between quantum dots, modulating the exchange interaction while maintaining symmetry between the dots. Excellent agreement is found with a model that separately includes electrical and nuclear noise sources for both detuning and symmetric gating schemes. Unlike exchange con…

As an application in circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) coupled systems, superconducting resonators play an important role in high-sensitivity measurements in a superconductingsemiconductor hybrid architecture. Taking advantage of a high-impedance NbTiN resonator, we perform excited-state spectroscopy on a GaAs double quantum dot (DQD) by applying voltage pulses to one gate electrode. The pulse train modulates the DQD energy detuning and gives rise to charge state transitions at zero detuning. Benefiting from the outstanding sensitivity of the resonator, we distinguish different spin-state…
We measure the interdot charge relaxation time T_1 of a single electron trapped in an accumulation mode Si/SiGe double quantum dot. The energy level structure of the charge qubit is determined using photon assisted tunneling, which reveals the presence of a low lying excited state. We systematically measure T_1 as a function of detuning and interdot tunnel coupling and show that it is tunable over four orders of magnitude, with a maximum of 45 microseconds for our device configuration. Measured relaxation times are consistent with a phonon mediated energy relaxation process and indicate that l…
Highly accurate numerical results of phonon-induced two-electron spin relaxation in silicon double quantum dots are presented. The relaxation, enabled by spin-orbit coupling and the nuclei of $^{29}$Si (natural or purified abundance), are investigated for experimentally relevant parameters, the interdot coupling, the magnetic field magnitude and orientation, and the detuning. We calculate relaxation rates for zero and finite temperatures (100 mK), concluding that our findings for zero temperature remain qualitatively valid also for 100 mK. We confirm the same anisotropic switch of the axis of …
We investigated the electron transport property of the InGaAs/GaAs double quantum dots, the electron g-factors of which are different from each other. We found that in a magnetic field, the resonant tunneling is suppressed even if one of the Zeeman sublevels is aligned. This is because the other misaligned Zeeman sublevels limit the total current. A finite broadening of the misaligned sublevel partially relieves this bottleneck effect, and the maximum current is reached when interdot detuning is half the Zeeman energy difference.
We study a double quantum dot (DQD) coupled to a strongly biased quantum point contact (QPC), each embedded in independent electric circuits. For weak interdot tunnelling we observe a finite current flowing through the unbiased Coulomb blockaded DQD in response to a strong bias on the QPC. The direction of the current through the DQD is determined by the relative detuning of the energy levels of the two quantum dots. The results are interpreted in terms of a quantum ratchet phenomenon in a DQD energized by a nearby QPC.
Controlled adiabatic transfer of a single electron through a chain of quantum dots has been recently achieved in GaAs and Si/SiGe based quantum dots, opening prospects for turning stationary spin qubits into mobile ones, and solving in this way the problem of long-distance communication between quantum registers in a scalable quantum computing architecture based on quantum dots. We consider theoretically the process of such an electron transfer between two tunnel-coupled quantum dots, focusing on control by slowly varying the detuning of energy levels in the dots. We take into account the fluc…
We propose and demonstrate complete spin state readout of a two-electron system in a double quantum dot probed by an electrometer. The protocol is based on repetitive single shot measurements using Pauli spin blockade and our ability to tune on fast timescales the detuning and the interdot tunnel coupling between the GHz and sub-Hz regime. A sequence of three distinct manipulations and measurements allows establishing if the spins are in S, Tzero, Tplus or Tminus state. This work points at a procedure to reduce the overhead for spin readout, an important challenge for scaling up spin qubit pla…
We discuss the spectral lineshapes of N quantum dots in strong coupling with the single mode of a microcavity. Nontrivial features are brought by detuning the emitters or probing the direct exciton emission spectrum. We describe dark states, quantum nonlinearities, emission dips and interferences and show how these various effects may coexist, giving rise to highly peculiar lineshapes.
Motivated by the observation of multiphoton electric dipole spin resonance processes in InAs nanowires, we theoretically study the transport dynamics of a periodically driven five-level system, modeling the level structure of a two-electron double quantum dot. We show that the observed multiphoton resonances, which are dominant near interdot charge transitions, are due to multilevel Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg-Majorana interference. Here a third energy level serves as a shuttle that transfers population between the two resonant spin states. By numerically integrating the master equation we replic…
We analyze electron spin relaxation in electronic transport through coherently coupled double quantum dots in the spin blockade regime. In particular, we focus on hyperfine interaction as the spin relaxation mechanism. We pay special attention to the effect of the dynamical nuclear spin polarization induced by the electronic current on the nuclear environment. We discuss the behaviour of the electronic current and the induced nuclear spin polarization versus an external magnetic field for different hyperfine coupling intensities and interdot tunnelling strengths. We take into account, for each…
Single spin state evolution induced by the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana (LZSM) interference in a Zeeman-spit four level system in a periodically driven double quantum dot is studied theoretically by the Floquet stroboscopic method. An interplay between spin-conserving and spin-flip tunneling processes with the Electric Dipole Spin Resonance (EDSR) that is induced in an individual dot and enhanced by the LZSM multiple level crossings with the neighboring quantum dot is investigated as a function of the microwave (MW) frequency, driving amplitude, interdot detuning, and magnetic field. A nu…
Building upon earlier work on the relation between the dimensionless interdot channel conductance g and the fractional Coulomb-blockade peak splitting f for two electrostatically equivalent dots, we calculate the leading correction that results from an interdot tunneling barrier that is not a delta-function but, rather, has a finite height V and a nonzero width xi and can be approximated as parabolic near its peak. We develop a new treatment of the problem for g much less than 1 that starts from the single-particle eigenstates for the full coupled-dot system. The finiteness of the barrier lead…
We characterize numerically and analytically the signatures of the spin-orbit interaction in a two-electron GaAs double quantum dot in the presence of an external magnetic field. In particular, we obtain the return probability of the singlet state by simulating Landau-Zener voltage detuning sweeps which traverse the singlet-triplet ($S-T_+$) resonance. Our results indicate that non-spin-conserving interdot tunneling processes arising from the spin-orbit interaction have well defined signatures. These allow direct access to the spin-orbit interaction scales and are characterized by a frequency …
We investigate spin relaxation in a silicon double quantum dot via leakage current through Pauli blockade as a function of interdot detuning and magnetic field. A dip in leakage current as a function of magnetic field on a \sim 40 mT field scale is attributed to spin-orbit mediated spin relaxation. On a larger (\sim 400 mT) field scale, a peak in leakage current is seen in some, but not all, Pauli-blocked transitions, and is attributed to spin-flip cotunneling. Both dip and peak structure show good agreement between theory and experiment.
We investigate the optical response of quantum dot molecules coherently driven by polarized laser light. Our description includes the splitting in excitonic levels caused by isotropic and anisotropic exchange interactions. We consider interdot transitions mediated by hole tunneling between states with the same total angular momentum and between bright and dark exciton states, as allowed by spin-flip hopping between the dots in the molecule. Using realistic experimental parameters we demonstrate that the excitonic states coupled by tunneling exhibit a rich and controllable optical response. We …
The Generalized Kohn Theorem in arrays of parabolic quantum dots with Coulomb interaction between the dots is violated, if there are different dot species involved. We solve the Schrödinger equation for cubic lattices with two different dots per unit cell: i) two different circular dots and ii) two elliptical dots, which are rotated by $90^o$ relative to each other. The interaction between the dots is considered in dipole approximation and long-- wavelength excitation spectra including FIR intensities are calculated. The energy spectrum of the first case can be expressed as a superposition of …
We study theoretically the \emph{return probability experiment}, used to measure the dephasing time $T_2^*$, in a double quantum dot (DQD) in semiconducting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with spin-orbit coupling and disorder induced valley mixing. Dephasing is due to hyperfine interaction with the spins of the ${}^{13}$C nuclei. Due to the valley and spin degrees of freedom four bounded states exist for any given longitudinal mode in the quantum dot. At zero magnetic field the spin-orbit coupling and the valley mixing split those four states into two Kramers doublets. The valley mixing term for a gi…
We consider a double quantum dot whose energy detuning is controlled by an ac electric field. We demonstrate an energy configuration for which the ac-induced current flowing through the double dot directly probes the spin-orbit anticrossing point for small ac field amplitudes. On the contrary, as the ac amplitude increases a current antiresonance is formed, and the direct information about the spin-orbit interaction is lost. This result indicates that a large ac amplitude is not necessarily advantageous for the spectroscopy of spin-orbit coupled two-spin states. Moreover, we investigate the ac…
The germanium (Ge) hut wire system has strong spin-orbit coupling, a long coherence time due to a very large heavy-light hole splitting, and the advantage of site-controlled large-scale hut wire positioning. These properties make the Ge hut wire a promising candidate for the realization of strong coupling of spin to superconducting resonators and scalability for multiple qubit coupling. We have coupled a reflection line resonator to a hole double quantum dot (DQD) formed in Ge hut wire. The amplitude and phase responses of the microwave resonator revealed that the charge stability diagrams of …
The interplay of dynamical nuclear polarization (DNP) and leakage current through a double quantum dot in the spin-blockade regime is analyzed. A finite DNP is built up due to a competition between hyperfine (HF) spin-flip transitions and another inelastic escape mechanism from the triplets, which block transport. We focus on the temperature dependence of the DNP for zero energy-detuning (i.e. equal electrostatic energy of one electron in each dot and a singlet in the right dot). Our main result is the existence of a transition temperature, below which the DNP is bistable, so a hysteretic leak…
The influence of strong electron-electron interactions and Wigner-molecule (WM) formation on the spectra of $2e$ singlet-triplet double-dot Si qubits is presented based on a full configuration interaction (FCI) approach that incorporates the valley degree of freedom (VDOF) in the context of the continuous (effective mass) description of semiconductor materials. Our FCI treats the VDOF as an isospin in addition to the regular spin. Our treatment is able to assign to each energy curve in the qubit's spectrum a complete set of good quantum numbers for both the spin and the valley isospin. This re…
"Spin noise spectroscopy" (SNS) is a powerful optical technique for probing electron and hole spin dynamics that is based on detecting their intrinsic and random fluctuations while in thermal equilibrium, an approach guaranteed by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Because SNS measures fluctuation properties rather than conventional response functions, we show that fluctuation \emph{correlations} can be exploited in multi-probe noise studies to reveal information that in general cannot be accessed by conventional linear optical spectroscopy, such as the underlying homogeneous linewidths of i…
