Let $G$ be a permutation group on a set $Ω$ and recall that a base for $G$ is a subset of $Ω$ such that its pointwise stabiliser is trivial. In a recent paper, Burness and Giudici introduced the Saxl graph of $G$, denoted $Σ(G)$, with vertex set $Ω$ and two vertices adjacent if they form a base. If $G$ is transitive, then $Σ(G)$ is vertex-transitive and it is natural to consider its valency (which we refer to as the valency of $G$). In this paper we present a general method for computing the valency of any finite transitive group and we use it to calculate the exact valency of every primitive group with stabiliser a Frobenius group with cyclic kernel. As an application, we calculate the valency of every almost simple primitive group with an alternating socle and soluble stabiliser and we use this to extend results of Burness and Giudici on almost simple primitive groups with prime-power or odd valency.
Let $G$ be a transitive permutation group on a finite set $Ω$ and recall that a base for $G$ is a subset of $Ω$ with trivial pointwise stabiliser. The base size of $G$, denoted $b(G)$, is the minimal size of a base. If $b(G)=2$ then we can study the Saxl graph $Σ(G)$ of $G$, which has vertex set $Ω$ and two vertices are adjacent if they form a base. This is a vertex-transitive graph, which is conjectured to be connected with diameter at most $2$ when $G$ is primitive. In this paper, we combine probabilistic and computational methods to prove a strong form of this conjecture for all almost simp…
Common neighbour conjectures for Saxl graphs fail at every base size

Let $G$ be a permutation group on a set $Ω$. A subset of $Ω$ is a base for $G$ if its pointwise stabiliser in $G$ is trivial. In this paper we introduce and study an associated graph $Σ(G)$, which we call the Saxl graph of $G$. The vertices of $Σ(G)$ are the points of $Ω$, and two vertices are adjacent if they form a base for $G$. This graph encodes some interesting properties of the permutation group. We investigate the connectivity of $Σ(G)$ for a finite transitive group $G$, as well as its diameter, Hamiltonicity, clique and independence numbers, and we present several open problems. For in…

Let $G$ be a permutation group on a set $Ω$. A base for $G$ is a subset of $Ω$ whose pointwise stabiliser is trivial, and the base size of $G$ is the minimal cardinality of a base. If $G$ has base size $2$, then the corresponding Saxl graph $Σ(G)$ has vertex set $Ω$ and two vertices are adjacent if they form a base for $G$. A recent conjecture of Burness and Giudici states that if $G$ is a finite primitive permutation group with base size $2$, then $Σ(G)$ has the property that every two vertices have a common neighbour. We investigate this conjecture when $G$ is an affine group and a point sta…
We classify finite primitive permutation groups having a suborbit of length 5. As a corollary, we obtain a classification of finite vertex-primitive graphs of valency 5. In the process, we also classify finite almost simple groups that have a maximal subgroup isomorphic to $\mathrm{Alt}(5)$ or $\mathrm{Sym}(5)$.
A graph $\Ga=(V,E)$ is called a Cayley graph of some group $T$ if the automorphism group $\Aut(\Ga)$ contains a subgroup $T$ which acts on regularly on $V$. If the subgroup $T$ is normal in $\Aut(\Ga)$ then $\Ga$ is called a normal Cayley graph of $T$. Let $r$ be an odd prime. Fang et al. \cite{FMW} proved that, with a finite number of exceptions for finite simple group $T$, every connected symmetric Cayley graph of $T$ of valency $r$ is normal. In this paper, employing maximal factorizations of finite almost simple groups, we work out a possible list of those exceptions for $T$.
The main result of this paper is that, if $Γ$ is a finite connected $4$-valent arc-transitive graph, then either $Γ$ is part of a well-understood family of graphs, or every non-identity automorphism of $Γ$ fixes at most $1/3$ of the vertices. As a corollary, we get a similar result for $3$-valent vertex-transitive graphs. Based on these results we propose a conjecture on the number of fixed points of non-identity automorphisms of vertex-transitive graphs of bounded valency.
We give certain properties which are satisfied by the descendant set of a vertex in an infinite, primitive, distance transitive digraph of finite out-valency and provide a strong structure theory for digraphs satisfying these properties. In particular, we show that there are only countably many possibilities for the isomorphism type of such a descendant set, thereby confirming a conjecture of the first Author. As a partial converse, we show that certain related conditions on a countable digraph are sufficient for it to occur as the descendant set of a primitive, distance transitive digraph.
Given integers $k$ and $m$, we construct a $G$-arc-transitive graph of valency $k$ and an $L$-arc-transitive oriented digraph of out-valency $k$ such that $G$ and $L$ both admit blocks of imprimitivity of size $m$.
In 2011, Fang et al. in (J. Combin. Theory A 118 (2011) 1039-1051) posed the following problem: Classify non-normal locally primitive Cayley graphs of finite simple groups of valency $d$, where either $d\leq 20$ or $d$ is a prime number. The only case for which the complete solution of this problem is known is of $d=3$. Except this, a lot of efforts have been made to attack this problem by considering the following problem: Characterize finite nonabelian simple groups which admit non-normal locally primitive Cayley graphs of certain valency $d\geq4$. Even for this problem, it was only solved f…
We develop a new framework for analysing finite connected, oriented graphs of valency 4, which admit a vertex-transitive and edge-transitive group of automorphisms preserving the edge orientation. We identify a sub-family of "basic" graphs such that each graph of this type is a normal cover of at least one basic graph. The basic graphs either admit an edge-transitive group of automorphisms that is quasiprimitive or biquasiprimitive on vertices, or admit an (oriented or unoriented) cycle as a normal quotient. We anticipate that each of these additional properties will facilitate effective furth…
A transitive permutation group is called elusive if it contains no semiregular element. We show that no group of automorphisms of a connected graph of valency at most four is elusive and determine all the elusive groups of automorphisms of connected digraphs of out-valency at most three.
A finite group $G$ is called Cayley integral if all undirected Cayley graphs over $G$ are integral, i.e., all eigenvalues of the graphs are integers. The Cayley integral groups have been determined by Kloster and Sander in the abelian case, and by Abdollahi and Jazaeri, and independently by Ahmady, Bell and Mohar in the non-abelian case. In this paper we generalize this class of groups by introducing the class $\mathcal{G}_k$ of finite groups $G$ for which all graphs $\mathrm{Cay}(G,S)$ are integral if $|S| \le k$. It will be proved that $\mathcal{G}_k$ consists of the Cayley integral groups i…
It is well-known that a simple $G$-arc-transitive graph can be represented as a coset graph for the group $G$. This representation is extended to a construction of $G$-arc-transitive coset graphs $\Cos(G,H,J)$ with finite valency and finite edge-multiplicity, where $H, J$ are stabilisers in $G$ of a vertex and incident edge, respectively. Given a group $G=ła,z\r$ with $|z|=2$ and $|a|$ finite, the coset graph $\Cos(G,ła\r,łz\r)$ is shown, under suitable finiteness assumptions, to have exactly two different arc-transitive embeddings as a $G$-arc-transitive map $(V,E,F)$, namely, a {\it $G$-rota…
In this paper, we introduce a method for finding all edge-transitive graphs of small order, using faithful representations of transitive permutation groups of small degree, and we explain how we used this method to find all edge-transitive graphs of order up to $47$, and all bipartite edge-transitive graphs of order up to $63$. We also give an answer to a 1967 question of Folkman about semi-symmetric graphs of large valency; in fact we show that for semi-symmetric graphs of order $2n$ and valency $d$, the ratio $d/n$ can be arbitrarily close to $1$.
A graph is called {\em half-arc-transitive} if its full automorphism group acts transitively on vertices and edges, but not on arcs. It is well known that for any prime $p$ there is no tetravalent half-arc-transitive graph of order $p$ or $p^2$. Xu~[Half-transitive graphs of prime-cube order, J. Algebraic Combin. 1 (1992) 275-282] classified half-arc-transitive graphs of order $p^3$ and valency $4$. In this paper we classify half-arc-transitive graphs of order $p^3$ and valency $6$ or $8$. In particular, the first known infinite family of half-arc-transitive Cayley graphs on non-metacyclic $p$…
In this paper we investigate graphs that admit a group acting arc-transitively such that the local action is semiprimitive with a regular normal nilpotent subgroup. This type of semiprimitive group is a generalisation of an affine group. We show that if the graph has valency coprime to six, then there is a bound on the order of the vertex stabilisers depending on the valency alone. We also prove a detailed structure theorem for the vertex stabilisers in the remaining case. This is a contribution to an ongoing project to investigate the validity of the Potočnik-Spiga-Verret Conjecture.
A connected graph $Γ=(V,E)$ of valency at least $3$ is called a basic $2$-arc-transitive graph if its full automorphism group has a subgroup $G$ with the following properties: (i) $G$ acts transitively on the set of $2$-arcs of $Γ$, and (ii) every minimal normal subgroup of $G$ has at most two orbits on $V$. In her papers [17,18], Praeger proved a connected $2$-arc-transitive graph of valency at least $3$ is a normal cover of some basic $2$-arc-transitive graph, and characterized the group-theoretic structures for basic $2$-arc-transitive graphs. Based on Praeger's theorems on $2$-arc-transiti…
An automorphism of a graph is called quasi-semiregular if it fixes a unique vertex of the graph and its remaining cycles have the same length. This kind of symmetry of graphs was first investigated by Kutnar, Malnič, Martínez and Marušič in 2013, as a generalization of the well-known semiregular automorphism of a graph. Symmetric graphs of valency three or four, admitting a quasi-semiregular automorphism, have been classified in recent two papers. Let $p\geq 5$ be a prime and $Γ$ a connected symmetric graph of valency $p$ admitting a quasi-semiregular automorphism. In this paper, we first prov…
The polycirculant conjecture asserts that every vertex-transitive digraph has a semiregular automorphism, that is, a nontrivial automorphism whose cycles all have the same length. In this paper we investigate the existence of semiregular automorphisms of edge-transitive graphs. In particular, we show that any regular edge-transitive graph of valency three or four has a semiregular automorphism.
In this paper we determine all locally finite and symmetric actions of a group on the tree of valency five. As a corollary we complete the classification of the isomorphism types of vertex and edge stabilisers in a group acting symmetrically on a graph of valency five. This builds on work of Weiss and recent work of Zhou and Feng. This depends upon the second result of this paper, the classification of isomorphism types of finite, primitive amalgams of degree (5, 2).
Using the construction of a nonorientable Curtis-Tits group of type $\tilde A_n$, we obtain new explicit families of expander graphs of valency five for unitary groups over finite fields.
We first characterize all faithful arc-transitive covers of complete graphs and we give a general construction of such covers. For a counterpart of cover, we say a graph $Γ$ is a pseudocover of its quotient $Σ$ if they have the same valency and $Γ$ is not a cover of $Σ$.As the second result of this paper, we prove that the complete graph $\K_n$ has a connected arc-transitive pseudocover if and only if $n-1$ is not a prime.
A graph is called cubic and tetravalent if all of its vertices have valency 3 and 4, respectively. It is called vertex-transitive and arc-transitive if its automorphism group acts transitively on its vertex-set and on its arc- set, respectively. In this paper, we combine some new theoretical results with computer calculations to construct all cubic vertex-transitive graphs of order at most 1280. In the process, we also construct all tetravalent arc-transitive graphs of order at most 640.
In this paper, we discuss the structural information about 2-arc-transitive (non-bipartite and bipartite) graphs of product action type. It is proved that a 2-arc-transitive graph of product action type requires certain restrictions on either the vertex-stabilizers or the valency. Based on the existence of some equidistant linear codes, a construction is given for 2-arc-transitive graphs of non-diagonal product action type, which produces several families of such graphs. Besides, a nontrivial construction is given for 2-arc-transitive bipartite graphs of diagonal product action type
Two-sided group digraphs and graphs, introduced by Iradmusa and Praeger, provide a generalization of Cayley digraphs and graphs in which arcs are determined by left and right multiplying by elements of two subsets of the group. We characterize when two-sided group digraphs and graphs are weakly and strongly connected and count connected components, using both an explicit elementary perspective and group actions. Our results and examples address four open problems posed by Iradmusa and Praeger that concern connectedness and valency. We pose five new open problems.
A graph is called {\em arc-transitive} (or {\em symmetric}) if its automorphism group has a single orbit on ordered pairs of adjacent vertices, and 2-arc-transitive its automorphism group has a single orbit on ordered paths of length 2. In this paper we consider the orders of such graphs, for given valency. We prove that for any given positive integer $k$, there exist only finitely many connected 3-valent 2-arc-transitive graphs whose order is $kp$ for some prime $p$, and that if $d\ge 4$, then there exist only finitely many connected $d$-valent 2-arc-transitive graphs whose order is $kp$ or $…
Given a finite group $G$ and a subset $S\subseteq G,$ the bi-Cayley graph $\bcay(G,S)$ is the graph whose vertex set is $G \times \{0,1\}$ and edge set is $\{\{(x,0),(s x,1)\} : x \in G, s\in S \}$. A bi-Cayley graph $\bcay(G,S)$ is called a BCI-graph if for any bi-Cayley graph $\bcay(G,T),$ $\bcay(G,S) \cong \bcay(G,T)$ implies that $T = g S^α$ for some $g \in G$ and $α\in \aut(G)$. A group $G$ is called an $m$-BCI-group if all bi-Cayley graphs of $G$ of valency at most $m$ are BCI-graphs.In this paper we prove that, a finite nilpotent group is a 3-BCI-group if and only if it is in the form $…
Let S be a finite generating set of a torsion-free, nilpotent group G. We show that every automorphism of the Cayley graph Cay(G;S) is affine. (That is, every automorphism of the graph is obtained by composing a group automorphism with multiplication by an element of the group.) More generally, we show that if Cay(G;S) and Cay(G';S') are connected Cayley graphs of finite valency on two nilpotent groups G and G', then every isomorphism from Cay(G;S) to Cay(G';S') factors through to a well-defined affine map from G/N to G'/N', where N and N' are the torsion subgroups of G and G', respectively. F…
Let $G$ be a transitive permutation group of degree $n$. We say that $G$ is $2'$-elusive if $n$ is divisible by an odd prime, but $G$ does not contain a derangement of odd prime order. In this paper we study the structure of quasiprimitive and biquasiprimitive $2'$-elusive permutation groups, extending earlier work of Giudici and Xu on elusive groups. As an application, we use our results to investigate automorphisms of finite arc-transitive graphs of prime valency.
A non-complete graph $Γ$ is said to be $(G,2)$-distance transitive if $G$ is a subgroup of the automorphism group of $Γ$ that is transitive on the vertex set of $Γ$, and for any vertex $u$ of $Γ$, the stabilizer $G_u$ is transitive on the sets of vertices at distance 1 and 2 from $u$. This paper investigates the family of $(G,2)$-distance transitive graphs that are not $(G,2)$-arc transitive. Our main result is the classification of such graphs of valency not greater than 5.
In this paper we discuss a method for bounding the size of the stabiliser of a vertex in a $G$-vertex-transitive graph $Γ$. In the main result the group $G$ is quasiprimitive or biquasiprimitive on the vertices of $Γ$, and we obtain a genuine reduction to the case where $G$ is a nonabelian simple group. Using normal quotient techniques developed by the first author, the main theorem applies to general $G$-vertex-transitive graphs which are $G$-locally primitive (respectively, $G$-locally quasiprimitive), that is, the stabiliser $G_α$ of a vertex $α$ acts primitively (respectively quasiprimitiv…
Let $Γ$ be a connected $G$-vertex-transitive graph, let $v$ be a vertex of $Γ$ and let $G_v^{Γ(v)}$ be the permutation group induced by the action of the vertex-stabiliser $G_v$ on the neighbourhood $Γ(v)$. The graph $Γ$ is said to be $G$-\emph{locally primitive} if $G_v^{Γ(v)}$ is primitive. Richard Weiss conjectured in $1978$ that, there exists a function $f:\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{N}$ such that, if $Γ$ is a connected $G$-vertex-transitive locally primitive graph of valency $d$ and $v$ is a vertex of $Γ$ with $|G_v|$ finite, then $|G_v|\leq f(d)$. As an application of the Local $C(G,T)$ Theore…
Let $G \leqslant {\rm Sym}(Ω)$ be a finite permutation group and recall that the base size of $G$ is the minimal size of a subset of $Ω$ with trivial pointwise stabiliser. There is an extensive literature on base sizes for primitive groups, but there are very few results for primitive groups of product type. In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of bases in this setting. Our first main result determines the base size of every product type primitive group of the form $L \wr P \leqslant {\rm Sym}(Ω)$ with soluble point stabilisers, where $Ω= Γ^k$, $L \leqslant {\rm Sym}(Γ)$ and $P \leqsl…
We calculate the K-theory of the Cuntz-Krieger algebra ${\cal O}_E$ associated with an infinite, locally finite graph, via the Bass-Hashimoto operator. The formulae we get express the Grothendieck group and the Whitehead group in purely graph theoretic terms. We consider the category of finite (black-and-white, bi-directed) subgraphs with certain graph homomorphisms and construct a continuous functor to abelian groups. In this category $K_0$ is an inductive limit of $K$-groups of finite graphs, which were calculated in \cite{MM}. In the case of an infinite graph with the finite Betti number we…
