We theoretically derive and experimentally compare several different ways to access entropy production in a quantum process under feedback control. We focus on a bipartite quantum system realizing an autonomous Maxwell's demon scheme reported by Najera-Santos et al. [Phys.~Rev.~Research 2, 032025(R) (2020)], where information encoded in a demon is consumed to transfer heat from a cold qubit to a hot cavity. By measuring individual quantum trajectories of the joint demon-cavity-qubit system, we compute the entropy production with six distinct expressions derived from different approaches to the system description and its evolution. Each method uses a specific set of trajectories and data processing. Our results provide a unified view on the various meanings of irreversibility in quantum systems and pave the way to the measurement of entropy production beyond thermal frameworks.
We study subadditivity of the minimum output entropy ($H_{min}$) of quantum multiple access channels (MACs). We provide an example of violation of the additivity theorem for $H_{min}$ known in classical information theory. Our result is based on a fundamental property of $MACs$ i.e. independence of each sender. The channels used in the example can be constructed explicitly. On the basis of subadditivity of $H_{min}$ we also provide an example of extremal superadditivity (super activation) of the classical capacity region of MACs.
We consider the transmission of classical information over a quantum channel by two senders. The channel capacity region is shown to be a convex hull bound by the Von Neumann entropy and the conditional Von Neumann entropy. We discuss some possible applications of our result. We also show that our scheme allows a reasonable distribution of channel capacity over two senders.
Min-entropy sampling gives a bound on the min-entropy of a randomly chosen subset of a string, given a bound on the min-entropy of the whole string. König and Renner showed a min-entropy sampling theorem that holds relative to quantum knowledge. Their result achieves the optimal rate, but it can only be applied if the bits are sampled in blocks, and only gives weak bounds for the non-smooth min-entropy. We give two new quantum min-entropy sampling theorems that do not have the above weaknesses. The first theorem shows that the result by König and Renner also applies to bitwise sampling, and th…
We present some dynamic and entropic considerations about the evolution of a continuous time quantum walk implementing the clock of an autonomous machine. On a simple model, we study in quite explicit terms the Lindblad evolution of the clocked subsystem, relating the evolution of its entropy to the spreading of the wave packet of the clock. We explore possible ways of reducing the generation of entropy in the clocked subsystem, as it amounts to a deficit in the probability of finding the target state of the computation. We are thus lead to examine the benefits of abandoning some classical pre…
The von Neumann entropy and the subentropy of a mixed quantum state are upper and lower bounds, respectively, on the accessible information of any ensemble consistent with the given mixed state. Here we define and investigate a set of quantities intermediate between entropy and subentropy.
We define classical-quantum multiway channels for transmission of classical information, after recent work by Allahverdyan and Saakian. Bounds on the capacity region are derived in a uniform way, which are analogous to the classically known ones, simply replacing Shannon entropy with von Neumann entropy. For the single receiver case (multiple access channel) the exact capacity region is determined. These results are applied to the case of noisy channels, with arbitrary input signal states. A second issue of this work is the presentation of a calculus of quantum information quantities, based on…
We introduce ways to measure information storage in quantum systems, using a recently introduced computation-theoretic model that accounts for measurement effects. The first, the quantum excess entropy, quantifies the shared information between a quantum process's past and its future. The second, the quantum transient information, determines the difficulty with which an observer comes to know the internal state of a quantum process through measurements. We contrast these with von Neumann entropy and quantum entropy rate and provide a closed-form expression for the latter for the class of deter…
We numerically analyze the dynamical generation of quantum entanglement in a system of 2 interacting particles, started in a coherent separable state, for decreasing values of $\hbar$. As $\hbar\to 0$ the entanglement entropy, computed at any finite time, converges to a finite nonzero value. The limit law that rules the time dependence of entropy is well reproduced by purely classical computations. Its general features may then be explained by simple classical arguments, which expose the different ways entanglement is generated in systems which are classically chaotic or regular.
Entropy production is a key quantity characterizing nonequilibrium systems. However, it can often be difficult to compute in practice, as it requires detailed information about the system and the dynamics it undergoes. This becomes even more difficult in the quantum domain, and if one is interested in generic nonequilibrium reservoirs, for which the standard thermal recipes no longer apply. In this paper, we derive an upper bound for the entropy production in terms of the entropy flux for a class of systems for which the flux is given in terms of a system's observable. Since currents are often…
We investigate stochastic entropy production in a two-level quantum system that performs Rabi oscillations while undergoing quantum measurement brought about by continuous random disturbance by an external measuring device or environment. The dynamics produce quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects for certain measurement regimes, and the stochastic entropy production is a measure of the irreversibility of the behaviour. When the strength of the measurement disturbance is time-dependent, the stochastic entropy production separates into three components. Two represent relaxational behaviour, one bei…
An explicit expression for the temperature of an open two-level quantum system is obtained as a function of local properties, under the hypothesis of weak interaction with the environment. This temperature is defined for both equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium states, and coincides with the environment temperature if the system reaches thermal equilibrium with a heat reservoir. Additionally, we show that within this theoretical framework the total entropy production can be partitioned into two contributions: one due to heat transfer, and another, associated to internal irreversibilities, relat…

We optimize a quantum walk of multiple fermions following a quench in a spin chain to generate near ideal resources for quantum networking. We first prove an useful theorem mapping the correlations evolved from specific quenches to the apparently unrelated problem of quantum state transfer between distinct spins. This mapping is then exploited to optimize the dynamics and produce large amounts of entanglement distributed in very special ways. Two applications are considered: the simultaneous generation of many Bell states between pairs of distant spins (maximal block entropy), or high entangle…
What are the conditions on a field theoretic model leading to a finite entanglement entropy density? We prove two very general results: 1) Ultraviolet finiteness of a theory does not guarantee finiteness of the entropy density; 2) If the spectral dimension of the spatial boundary across which the entropy is calculated is non-negative at all scales, then the entanglement entropy cannot be finite. These conclusions, which we verify in several examples, negatively affect all quantum-gravity models, since their spectral dimension is always positive. Possible ways out are considered, including aban…
Several ways have been proposed in the literature to define a coherence measure based on Tsallis relative entropy. One of them is defined as a distance between a state and a set of incoherent states with Tsallis relative entropy taken as a distance measure. Unfortunately, this measure does not satisfy the required strong monotonicity, but a modification of this coherence has been proposed that does. We introduce three new Tsallis coherence measures coming from a more general definition that also satisfy the strong monotonicity, and compare all five definitions between each other. Using three c…
In the context of network information theory, one often needs a multiparty probability distribution to be typical in several ways simultaneously. When considering quantum states instead of classical ones, it is in general difficult to prove the existence of a state that is jointly typical. Such a difficulty was recently emphasized and conjectures on the existence of such states were formulated. In this paper, we consider a one-shot multiparty typicality conjecture. The question can then be stated easily: is it possible to smooth the largest eigenvalues of all the marginals of a multipartite st…
We show that the topological phase transition for a Kitaev chain embedded in a cavity can be identified by measuring experimentally accessible photon observables such as the Fano factor and the cavity quadrature amplitudes. Moreover, based on density matrix renormalization group numerical calculations, endorsed by an analytical Gaussian approximation for the cavity state, we propose a direct link between those observables and quantum entropy singularities. We study two bipartite entanglement measures, the von Neumann and Rényi entanglement entropies, between light and matter subsystems. Even t…
