Video facial expression recognition is useful for many applications and received much interest lately. Although some solutions give really good results in a controlled environment (no occlusion), recognition in the presence of partial facial occlusion remains a challenging task. To handle occlusions, solutions based on the reconstruction of the occluded part of the face have been proposed. These solutions are mainly based on the texture or the geometry of the face. However, the similarity of the face movement between different persons doing the same expression seems to be a real asset for the reconstruction. In this paper we exploit this asset and propose a new solution based on an auto-encoder with skip connections to reconstruct the occluded part of the face in the optical flow domain. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first proposition to directly reconstruct the movement for facial expression recognition. We validated our approach in the controlled dataset CK+ on which different occlusions were generated. Our experiments show that the proposed method reduce significantly the gap, in terms of recognition accuracy, between occluded and non-occluded situations. We also compare our approach with existing state-of-the-art solutions. In order to lay the basis of a reproducible and fair comparison in the future, we also propose a new experimental protocol that includes occlusion generation and reconstruction evaluation.

Occlusion and pose variations, which can change facial appearance significantly, are two major obstacles for automatic Facial Expression Recognition (FER). Though automatic FER has made substantial progresses in the past few decades, occlusion-robust and pose-invariant issues of FER have received relatively less attention, especially in real-world scenarios. This paper addresses the real-world pose and occlusion robust FER problem with three-fold contributions. First, to stimulate the research of FER under real-world occlusions and variant poses, we build several in-the-wild facial expression …
Recognizing the expressions of partially occluded faces is a challenging computer vision problem. Previous expression recognition methods, either overlooked this issue or resolved it using extreme assumptions. Motivated by the fact that the human visual system is adept at ignoring the occlusion and focus on non-occluded facial areas, we propose a landmark-guided attention branch to find and discard corrupted features from occluded regions so that they are not used for recognition. An attention map is first generated to indicate if a specific facial part is occluded and guide our model to atten…

However, recognizing facial expression while wearing a head-mounted VR headset is a challenging task due to the upper h…
Concatenation of the deep network representations extracted from different facial patches helps to improve face recognition performance. However, the concatenated facial template increases in size and contains redundant information. Previous solutions aim to reduce the dimensionality of the facial template without considering the occlusion pattern of the facial patches. In this paper, we propose an occlusion-guided compact template learning (OGCTL) approach that only uses the information from visible patches to construct the compact template. The compact face representation is not sensitive to…
In this paper, we address a key limitation of existing 2D face recognition methods: robustness to occlusions. To accomplish this task, we systematically analyzed the impact of facial attributes on the performance of a state-of-the-art face recognition method and through extensive experimentation, quantitatively analyzed the performance degradation under different types of occlusion. Our proposed Occlusion-aware face REcOgnition (OREO) approach learned discriminative facial templates despite the presence of such occlusions. First, an attention mechanism was proposed that extracted local identit…

The face mask is an essential sanitaryware in daily lives growing during the pandemic period and is a big threat to current face recognition systems. The masks destroy a lot of details in a large area of face, and it makes it difficult to recognize them even for humans. The evaluation report shows the difficulty well when recognizing masked faces. Rapid development and breakthrough of deep learning in the recent past have witnessed most promising results from face recognition algorithms. But they fail to perform far from satisfactory levels in the unconstrained environment during the challenge…

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been pushing the frontier of the face recognition research in the past years. However, existing general CNN face models generalize poorly to the scenario of occlusions on variable facial areas. Inspired by the fact that a human visual system explicitly ignores occlusions and only focuses on non-occluded facial areas, we propose a mask learning strategy to find and discard the corrupted feature elements for face recognition. A mask dictionary is firstly established by exploiting the differences between the top convoluted features of occluded and oc…
The limited capacity to recognize faces under occlusions is a long-standing problem that presents a unique challenge for face recognition systems and even for humans. The problem regarding occlusion is less covered by research when compared to other challenges such as pose variation, different expressions, etc. Nevertheless, occluded face recognition is imperative to exploit the full potential of face recognition for real-world applications. In this paper, we restrict the scope to occluded face recognition. First, we explore what the occlusion problem is and what inherent difficulties can aris…

In a broad range of computer vision applications, the purpose of Low-rank matrix approximation (LRMA) models is to recover the underlying low-rank matrix from its degraded observation. The latest LRMA methods - Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) resort to using the nuclear norm minimization (NNM) as a convex relaxation of the non-convex rank minimization. However, NNM tends to over-shrink the rank components and treats the different rank components equally, limiting its flexibility in practical applications. We use a more flexible model, namely the Weighted Schatten p-Norm Minimization…

Extraction of discriminative features from salient facial patches plays a vital role in effective facial expression recognition. The accurate detection of facial landmarks improves the localization of the salient patches on face images. This paper proposes a novel framework for expression recognition by using appearance features of selected facial patches. A few prominent facial patches, depending on the position of facial landmarks, are extracted which are active during emotion elicitation. These active patches are further processed to obtain the salient patches which contain discriminative f…
Multi-task learning is an effective learning strategy for deep-learning-based facial expression recognition tasks. The tremendous development in deep learning has led facial expression recognition (FER) to receive much attention in the past few years. Although 3D FER has an inherent edge over its 2D counterpart, work on 2D images has dominated the field. The main reason for the slow development of 3D FER is the unavailability of large training and large test datasets. Recognition accuracies have already saturated on existing 3D emotion recognition datasets due to their small gallery sizes. Unlike 2D photographs, 3D facial scans are not easy to collect, causing a bottleneck in the development of deep 3D FER…
