英文摘要:
Face recognition systems often experience performance degradation under large pose variations due to changes in facial appearance and visibility of discriminative features. This study presents a multi-task deep learning framework that jointly addresses pose-invariant face recognition and facial landmark localization within a unified architecture.
To enable simultaneous optimization of identity recognition and facial structure learning, the original Cross-Pose Labeled Faces in the Wild (CPLFW) dataset was adapted into a multi-task learning dataset by associating facial images with identity labels and five-point landmark annotations. The proposed framework consists of two task-specific branches operating on a common facial input: a ResNet50-based branch for identity recognition and an EfficientNetV2B0-based branch with spatial attention for facial landmark localization. The two objectives are jointly optimized using a weighted multi-task loss, allowing the model to learn complementary semantic and spatial facial representations.
The proposed framework was evaluated on the prepared CPLFW-based multi-task dataset. Unlike the original CPLFW benchmark, which focuses primarily on identity recognition, the proposed dataset adaptation incorporates five-point facial landmark annotations to enable joint recognition and localization learning. Experimental results demonstrate that the model achieves a validation recognition accuracy of 81.58% and a facial landmark localization mean squared error of 96.38. The results indicate that combining identity classification and landmark regression within a single optimization framework provides an effective approach for learning robust facial representations under cross-pose conditions
The proposed method demonstrates the potential of multi-task learning and attention-based feature refinement for unconstrained facial analysis.
Although facial landmark localization (FLL) approaches are becoming increasingly accurate for characterizing facial regions, one question remains unanswered: what is the impact of these approaches on subsequent related tasks? In this paper, the focus is put on facial expression recognition (FER), where facial landmarks are used for face registration, which is a common usage. Since the most used datasets for facial landmark localization do not allow for a proper measurement of performance according to the different difficulties (e.g., pose, expression, illumination, occlusion, motion blur), we …
One of the key issues in facial expression recognition in the wild (FER-W) is that curating large-scale labeled facial images is challenging due to the inherent complexity and ambiguity of facial images. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a self-supervised simple facial landmark encoding (SimFLE) method that can learn effective encoding of facial landmarks, which are important features for improving the performance of FER-W, without expensive labels. Specifically, we introduce novel FaceMAE module for this purpose. FaceMAE reconstructs masked facial images with elaborately designed semantic …

Facial landmark localization plays a critical role in face recognition and analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel cascaded backbone-branches fully convolutional neural network~(BB-FCN) for rapidly and accurately localizing facial landmarks in unconstrained and cluttered settings. Our proposed BB-FCN generates facial landmark response maps directly from raw images without any preprocessing. BB-FCN follows a coarse-to-fine cascaded pipeline, which consists of a backbone network for roughly detecting the locations of all facial landmarks and one branch network for each type of detected landm…

Thermal face image analysis is favorable for certain circumstances. For example, illumination-sensitive applications, like nighttime surveillance; and privacy-preserving demanded access control. However, the inadequate study on thermal face image analysis calls for attention in responding to the industry requirements. Detecting facial landmark points are important for many face analysis tasks, such as face recognition, 3D face reconstruction, and face expression recognition. In this paper, we propose a robust neural network enabled facial landmark detection, namely Deep Multi-Spectral Learning…

The proposed framework in this paper has the primary objective of classifying the facial expression shown by a person. These classifiable expressions can be any one of the six universal emotions along with the neutral emotion. After the initial facial localization is performed, facial landmark detection and feature extraction are applied where in the landmarks are determined to be the fiducial features: the eyebrows, eyes, nose and lips. This is primarily done using state-of-the-art facial landmark detection algorithms as well as traditional edge and corner point detection methods using Sobel …

Facial landmark localization is a very crucial step in numerous face related applications, such as face recognition, facial pose estimation, face image synthesis, etc. However, previous competitions on facial landmark localization (i.e., the 300-W, 300-VW and Menpo challenges) aim to predict 68-point landmarks, which are incompetent to depict the structure of facial components. In order to overcome this problem, we construct a challenging dataset, named JD-landmark. Each image is manually annotated with 106-point landmarks. This dataset covers large variations on pose and expression, which bri…

The accurate localization of facial landmarks is at the core of face analysis tasks, such as face recognition and facial expression analysis, to name a few. In this work, we propose a novel localization approach based on a deep learning architecture that utilizes cascaded subnetworks with convolutional neural network units. The cascaded units of the first subnetwork estimate heatmap-based encodings of the landmarks locations, while the cascaded units of the second subnetwork receive as input the output of the corresponding heatmap estimation units, and refine them through regression. The propo…

This paper presents a robust and dynamic face recognition technique based on the extraction and matching of devised probabilistic graphs drawn on SIFT features related to independent face areas. The face matching strategy is based on matching individual salient facial graph characterized by SIFT features as connected to facial landmarks such as the eyes and the mouth. In order to reduce the face matching errors, the Dempster-Shafer decision theory is applied to fuse the individual matching scores obtained from each pair of salient facial features. The proposed algorithm is evaluated with the O…
It is well known that deep learning approaches to face recognition and facial landmark detection suffer from biases in modern training datasets. Using a 3D morphable face model, we generate large amounts of synthetic face images with full control over facial shape and color, pose, illumination, and background. With a series of experiments, we extensively test the effects of priming deep nets by pre-training them with synthetic faces. We observe the following positive effects f…

In this work, we present a practical approach to the problem of facial landmark detection. The proposed method can deal with large shape and appearance variations under the rich shape deformation. To handle the shape variations we equip our method with the aggregation of manipulated face images. The proposed framework generates different manipulated faces using only one given face image. The approach utilizes the fact that small but carefully crafted geometric manipulation in the input domain can fool deep face recognition models. We propose three different approaches to generate manipulated f…
Facial landmark localization is a fundamental module for pose-invariant face recognition. The most common approach for facial landmark detection is cascaded regression, which is composed of two steps: feature extraction and facial shape regression. Recent methods employ deep convolutional networks to extract robust features for each step, while the whole system could be regarded as a deep cascaded regression architecture. In this work, instead of employing a deep regression network, a Globally Optimized Dual-Pathway (GoDP) deep architecture is proposed to identify the target pixels through sol…

Feature vectors from individual landmarks, as well as pairs of landmarks tracking results are extracted, and normalized, with respect to the first frame in the…
A recent trend to recognize facial expressions in the real-world scenario is to deploy attention based convolutional neural networks (CNNs) locally to signify the importance of facial regions and, combine it with global facial features and/or other complementary context information for performance gain. However, in the presence of occlusions and pose variations, different channels respond differently, and further that the response intensity of a channel differ across spatial locations. Also, modern facial expression recognition(FER) architectures rely on external sources like landmark detector…

More specifically, a novel 3D convolutional layer that we call Local Binary Volume (LBV) layer is proposed. We present a method for synthesizing a frontal, neutral-expression image of a person's face given an input face photograph. This is achieved by learning to generate facial landmarks and textures from features extracted from a facial-recognition network. Unlike previous approaches, our encoding feature vector is largely invariant to lighting, pose, and facial expression. Exploiting this invariance, we train our decoder network using only frontal, neutral-expression photographs. Since these photographs are well aligned, we can decompose them into a sparse set of landmark points and aligned textu…

To mitigate this issue, CNNs are often accompanied by techniques like transfer, multi-task, or ensemble learning that often provide high accuracy at the cost of increased computational complexity. In this work, we propose a Part-based Ensemble Transfer Learning network t…

Next, the face bounding box in the current frame is estimated and validated after the facial landmarks in the previous frame are tracked based on the median flow. Facial landmark detection is a very fundamental and significant vision task with many important applications. In practice, facial landmark detection can be affected by a lot of natural degradations. One of the most common and important degradations is the shadow caused by light source blocking. While many advanced shadow removal methods have been proposed to recover the image quality in recent years, their effects to facial landmark detection are not well studied. For example, it remains unclear whether shadow removal could enhance the robustness of facial landmark detection to diverse shadow …

The locations of the fiducial facial landmark points around facial components and facial contour capture the rigid and non-rigid facial deformations due to head movements and facial expressions. They are hence important for various facial analysis tasks. Many facial landmark detection algorithms have been developed to automatically detect those key points over the years, and in this paper, we perform an extensive review of them. We classify the facial landmark detection algorithms into three major categories: holistic methods, Constrained Local Model (CLM) methods, and the regression-based met…
