We perform resistive MHD simulations of accretion disk with alpha-viscosity, accreting onto a rotating star endowed with a magnetic dipole. We find backflow in the presence of strong magnetic field and large resistivity, and probe for the dependence on Prandtl number. We find that in the magnetic case the distance from the star at which backflow begins, the stagnation radius, is different than in the hydrodynamic case, and the backflow shows non-stationary behavior. We compare the results with hydrodynamics simulations.
Analytical solution for a thin hydrodynamic accretion disk shows that for some values of the viscosity parameter part of the accretion flow in the disk is not towards the star, but in the opposite direction. We study thin disks by performing hydrodynamic simulations and compare the numerical with analytical results. We confirm that for viscosity coefficient smaller than a critical value, there is a backflow in simulations near the disk mid-plane. The distance from the star to the starting point of backflow is increasing with viscosity, as predicted by the analytical solution. When the viscosit…
We discuss basic features of steady accretion disk morphology around magnetized compact astrophysical objects. A comparison between the standard model of accretion based on visco-resistive MHD and the plasma instabilities, like ballooning modes, triggered by very low value of resistivity, is proposed.
The physical modeling of the accretion disk boundary layer, the region where the disk meets the surface of the accreting star, usually relies on the assumption that angular momentum transport is opposite to the radial angular frequency gradient of the disk. The standard model for turbulent shear viscosity, widely adopted in astrophysics, satisfies this assumption by construction. However, this behavior is not supported by numerical simulations of turbulent magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) accretion disks, which show that angular momentum transport driven by the magnetorotational instability is ineffi…
AIMS. We investigate the stability and dynamics of accretion shocks in CTTSs, considering the case of beta >= 1 in the post-shock region. In these cases the 1D approximation is not valid and a multi-dimensional MHD approach is necessary. METHODS. We model an accretion stream propagating through the atmosphere of a CTTS and impacting onto its chromosphere, by performing 2D axisymmetric MHD simulations. The model takes into account the stellar magnetic field, the gravity, the radiative cooling, and the thermal conduction (including the effects of heat flux saturation). RESULTS. The dynamics and …
We review recent axisymmetric and three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) numerical simulations of magnetospheric accretion, plasma-field interaction and outflows from the disk-magnetosphere boundary.
We investigate under which conditions cold, fan-shaped winds can be steadily launched from thin (Keplerian) accretion discs. Such winds are magneto-centrifugal winds launched from a thin annulus in the disc, along open magnetic field lines that fan out above the disc. In principle, such winds could be found in two situations: (1) at the interface between an inner Jet Emitting Disc, which is itself powering magneto-centrifugally driven winds, and an outer standard accretion disc; (2) at the interface between an inner closed stellar magnetosphere and the outer standard accretion disc. We refer t…
We discuss the results of modelling of young magnetized stars, where matter flow is calculated using the three-dimensional (3D) magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) "Cubed Sphere" code, and the spectra are calculated using the 3D Monte Carlo radiative transfer code "TORUS". Two examples of modelling are shown: (1) accretion onto stars in stable and unstable regimes, and (2) accretion to a young star V2129 Oph, modelled with realistic parameters.
We present results of global 3D MHD simulations of disk accretion to a rotating star with dipole and more complex magnetic fields using a Godunov-type code based on the "cubed sphere" grid developed earlier in our group. We describe the code and the grid and show examples of simulation results.
We present MHD simulations exploring the launching, acceleration and collimation of jets and disk winds. The evolution of the disk structure is consistently taken into account. Extending our earlier studies, we now consider the self-generation of the magnetic field by an $α^2Ω$ mean-field dynamo. The disk magnetization remains on a rather low level, that helps to evolve the simulations for $T > 10,000$ dynamical time steps on a domain extending 1500 inner disk radii. We find a magnetic field of the inner disk similar to the commonly found open field structure, favoring magneto-centrifugal laun…
The aim of this paper is to investigate the properties of accretion disks threaded by a weak vertical magnetic field, with a particular focus on the interplay between MHD turbulence driven by the magnetorotational instability (MRI) and outflows that might be launched from the disk. For that purpose, we use a set of numerical simulations performed with the MHD code RAMSES in the framework of the shearing box model. We concentrate on the case of a rather weak vertical magnetic field such that the initial ratio beta0 of the thermal and magnetic pressures in the disk midplane equals 10^4. As repor…
The final architecture of planetary systems depends on the extraction of angular momentum and mass-loss processes of the discs in which they form. Theoretical studies proposed that magnetized winds launched from the discs (MHD disc winds) could govern accretion and disc dispersal. In this work, we revisit the observed disc demographics in the framework of MHD disc winds, combining analytical solutions of disc evolution and a disc population synthesis approach. We show that MHD disc winds alone can account for both disc dispersal and accretion properties. The decline of disc fraction over time …
We discuss results of global 3D MHD simulations of accretion on to a rotating magnetized star with a tilted dipole magnetic field, where the accretion is driven by the magneto-rotational instability (MRI). The simulations show that MRI-driven turbulence develops in the disc, and angular momentum is transported outwards due primarily to the magnetic stress. The turbulent flow is strongly inhomogeneous and the densest matter is in azimuthally-stretched turbulent cells. We investigate two regimes of accretion: a magnetospheric regime and a boundary layer (BL) regime. In the magnetospheric regime,…
Rings and gaps are being observed in an increasing number of disks around young stellar objects. We illustrate the formation of such radial structures through idealized, 2D (axisymmetric) resistive MHD simulations of coupled disk-wind systems threaded by a relatively weak poloidal magnetic field (plasma-$β\sim 10^3$). We find two distinct modes of accretion depending on the resistivity and field strength. A small resistivity or high field strength promotes the development of rapidly infalling `avalanche accretion streams' in a vertically extended disk envelope that dominates the dynamics of th…
Filaments have been studied in detail through observations and simulations. A range of numerical works have separately investigated how chemistry and diffusion effects, as well as magnetic fields and their structure impact the gas dynamics of the filament. However, non-ideal effects have hardly been explored thus far. We investigate how non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects, combined with a simplified chemical model affect the evolution and accretion of a star-forming filament. We modeled an accreting self-gravitating turbulent filament using lemongrab, a one-dimensional (1D) non-ideal M…

(Abridged) We report results of three dimensional MHD simulations of global accretion disks threaded with weak vertical magnetic fields. We perform the simulations in the spherical coordinates with different temperature profiles and accordingly different rotation profiles. In the cases with a spatially constant temperature, because the rotation frequency is vertically constant in the equilibrium condition, general properties of the turbulence are quantitatively similar to those obtained in local shearing box simulations. On the other hand, in the cases with a radially variable temperature prof…
We present results from the first global 3D MHD simulations of accretion disks in Cataclysmic Variable (CV) systems in order to investigate the relative importance of angular momentum transport via turbulence driven by the magnetorotational instability (MRI) compared to that driven by spiral shock waves. Remarkably, we find that even with vigorous MRI turbulence, spiral shocks are an important component to the overall angular momentum budget, at least when temperatures in the disk are high (so that Mach numbers are low). In order to understand the excitation, propagation, and damping of spiral…
We examine the long-term evolution of accretion tori around black hole (BH) remnants of compact object mergers involving at least one neutron star, to better understand their contribution to kilonovae and the synthesis of r-process elements. To this end, we modify the unsplit magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) solver in FLASH4.5 to work in non-uniform three-dimensional spherical coordinates, enabling more efficient coverage of a large dynamic range in length scales while exploiting symmetries in the system. This modified code is used to perform BH accretion disk simulations that vary the initial magnet…
We present 3D MHD simulations of the wind-wind interactions between a solar type star and a short period hot Jupiter exoplanet. This is the first such simulation in which the stellar surface evolution is studied in detail. In our simulations, a planetary outflow, based on models of FUV evaporation of the exoplanets upper atmosphere, results in the build-up of circumstellar and circumplanetary material which accretes onto the stellar surface in a form of coronal rain, in which the rain is HJ wind material falling onto the stellar surface. We have conducted a suite of mixed geometry high resolut…
We present the first results of a global axisymmetric simulation of accretion onto rotating magnetized stars from a turbulent, MRI-driven disk. The angular momentum is transported outward by the magnetic stress of the turbulent flow with a rate corresponding to a Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity parameter alpha\approx 0.01-0.04. The result of the disk-magnetosphere interaction depends on the orientation of the poloidal field in the disk relative to that of the star at the disk-magnetosphere boundary. If fields have the same polarity, then the magnetic flux is accumulated at the boundary and blocks th…
We consider the possibility that a mass of ~10^{-5}-10^{-3} Msun flows back from the dense shell of planetary nebulae and is accreted by the central star during the planetary nebula phase. This backflowing mass is expected to have a significant specific angular momentum even in (rare) spherical planetary nebulae, such that a transient accretion disk might be formed. This mass might influence the occurrence and properties of a very late thermal pulse (VLTP), and might even trigger it. For example, the rapidly rotating outer layer, and the disk if still exist, might lead to axisymmetrical mass e…
We present results of global three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of accretion onto magnetized stars where both the magnetic and rotational axes of the star are tilted about the rotational axis of the disc. We observed that initially the inner parts of the disc are warped, tilted, and process due to the magnetic interaction between the magnetosphere and the disc. Later, larger tilted discs form with the size increasing with the magnetic moment of the star. The normal vector to the discs are tilted at different angles, from 5-10 degrees up to 30-40 degrees. Small tilts m…
Planets are thought to form at the early stage of stellar evolution when the mass accretion is still ongoing. RY Tau is a T Tauri type star at the age of a few Myr, with accretion disc seen at high inclination, so that line of sight crosses both the wind and the accretion gas flows. In a long series of spectroscopic monitoring of the star in 2013-2020, we detected variations in H-alpha and NaI D absorptions at radial velocities of infall (accretion) and outflow (wind) with a period of about 22 days. The absorptions in the infalling and the outflowing gas streams vary in anti-phase: an increase…
Entrainment of dust particles in the flow inside and outside of the proto-planetary disk has implications for the disk evolution and composition of planets. Using quasi-stationary solutions in our star-disk simulations as a background, we add dust particles of different radii in post-processing of the results, using our Python tool DUSTER. The distribution and motion of particles in the disk is followed in the cases with and without the backflow in the disk. We also compare the results with and without the radiation pressure included in the computation.
This paper examines the outflows associated with the interaction of a stellar magnetosphere with an accretion disk. In particular, we investigate the magnetospheric ejections (MEs) due to the expansion and reconnection of the field lines connecting the star with the disk. Our aim is to study the dynamical properties of the outflows and evaluate their impact on the angular momentum evolution of young protostars. Our models are based on axisymmetric time-dependent magneto-hydrodynamic simulations of the interaction of the dipolar magnetosphere of a rotating protostar with a viscous and resistive…
Recent spectropolarimetric observations suggest that young low-mass stars such as classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) possess relatively strong (~kG) magnetic field. This supports a scenario in which the final accretion onto the stellar surface proceeds through a magnetosphere, and the winds are formed in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) processes. We examine recent numerical simulations of magnetospheric accretions via an inclined dipole and a complex magnetic fields. The difference between a stable accretion regime, in which accretion occurs in ordered funnel streams, and an unstable regime, in which …
Recent high resolution observations unveil ring structures in circumstellar disks. The origin of these rings has been widely investigated under various theoretical scenarios. In this work we perform global 3D non-ideal MHD simulations including effects from both Ohmic resistivity and ambipolar diffusion (AD) to model the HL Tau disk. The non-ideal MHD diffusion profiles are calculated based on the global dust evolution calculation including sintering effects. Disk ionization structure changes dramatically across the snow line due to the change of dust size distribution close to snow line of ma…
A three-dimensional numerical model for an accretion process investigation in the magnetosphere of a white dwarf in magnetic cataclysmic variables is developed. The model assumes that the white dwarf has a dipole magnetic field with its symmetry axis inclined to the rotation axis. The model is based on the equations of modified MHD, that describe the mean flow parameters in the wave MHD turbulence. Diffusion of the magnetic field and radiative heating and cooling are taken into account. The suitability of the model is confirmed by modeling the accretion in a typical intermediate polar. The com…
We use axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to investigate the launching and collimation of jets emerging from the disk-magnetosphere boundary of accreting magnetized stars. Our analysis shows that the matter flows into the jet from the inner edge of the accretion disk. It is magnetically accelerated along field lines extending up from the disk and simultaneously collimated by the magnetic pinch force. In the reference run which we use for analysis, the matter in the jet crosses the Alfvén surface a few R_* above the disk and the fast magnetosonic surface ~13 R_* above the disk. …
The evolution of protoplanetary discs and the related process of planet formation is regulated by angular momentum transport and mass-loss processes. Over the past decade, the paradigm of viscosity has been challenged and MHD disc winds appear as a compelling scenario to account for disc accretion. In this work, we aim to construct the equivalent of the widely used analytical description of viscous evolution for the MHD wind case. The transport of angular momentum and mass induced by the wind is parameterized by an $α$-like parameter and by the magnetic lever arm parameter $λ$. Extensions of t…
Stellar magnetosphere and accretion disk interact, and a result should be outflow launched from the innermost vicinity of a protostellar object. We simulated physical conditions in this region by resistive MHD simulations. Outflows resembling the observed ones do not happen in the closest vicinity, except for quasi-stationary funnel flows onto the star, but could occur at few tens of stellar radii above the star. Numerical simulations we performed using our resistive version of ZEUS-3D code, ZEUS347.
Building on our previous hydrodynamic study of the angular momenta of cloud cores formed during gravitational collapse of star-forming molecular gas in our previous work, we now examine core properties assuming ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Using the same sink-patch implementation for the \emph{Athena} MHD code, we characterize the statistical properties of cores, including the mass accretion rates, specific angular momenta, and alignments between the magnetic field and the spin axis of the core on the $0.1 \ \mathrm{pc}$ scale. Our simulations, which reproduce the observed relation betwee…
Substructures in PPDs, whose ubiquity was unveiled by recent ALMA observations, are widely discussed regarding their possible origins. We carry out global full magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations in axisymmetry, coupled with self-consistent ray-tracing radiative transfer, thermochemistry, and non-ideal MHD diffusivities. The abundance profiles of grains are also calculated based on the global dust evolution calculation, including sintering effects. We found that dust size plays a crucial role in the ring formation around the snow lines of protoplanetary disks (PPDs) through the accretion pro…
We investigate dynamics of accretion discs of young stars with fossil large-scale magnetic field. Our magneto-gas-dynamic (MHD) model of the accretion discs includes equations of Shakura and Sunyaev, induction equation, equations of thermal and collisional ionization. Induction equation takes into account Ohmic and magnetic ambipolar diffusion, magnetic buoyancy. We also consider the influence of Ohmic and ambipolar heating on thermal structure of the accretion discs. We analyse the influence of considered dissipative MHD effects on the temperature of the accretion discs around classical T Tau…
The gas temperature in protoplanetary disks (PPDs) is determined by a combination of irradiation heating and accretion heating, with the latter conventionally attributed to turbulent dissipation. However, recent studies have suggested that the inner disk (a few AU) is largely laminar, with accretion primarily driven by magnetized disk winds, as a result of nonideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects from weakly ionized gas, suggesting an alternative heating mechanism by Joule dissipation. We perform local stratified MHD simulations including all three nonideal MHD effects (ohmic, Hall, and ambi…
