In recent years, the import of quantum information techniques in quantum gravity opened new perspectives in the study of the microscopic structure of spacetime. We contribute to such a program by establishing a precise correspondence between the quantum information formalism of tensor networks (TN), in the case of projected entangled-pair states (PEPS) generalised to a second-quantized framework, and group field theory (GFT) states, and by showing how, in this quantum gravity approach, discrete spatial manifolds arise as entanglement patterns among quanta of space, having a dual representation in terms of graphs and simplicial complexes. We devote special attention to the implementation and consequences of the label independence of the graphs/networks, corresponding to the indistinguishability of the space quanta and representing a discrete counterpart of the diffeomorphism invariance of a consistent quantum gravity formalism. We also outline a relational setting to recover distinguishability of graph/network vertices at an effective and physical level, in a partial semi-classical limit of the theory.
This paper discusses ER = EPR, the hypothesis of Susskind and Maldacena that entangled black holes are connected by an Einstein-Rosen bridge, and that more generally, quantum entanglement is accompanied by topological connectivity. Given a background space and a quantum tensor network, we describe how to construct a new topological space, that welds the network and the background space together. This construction embodies the principle that quantum entanglement and topological connectivity are intimately related.
We construct and study the approximate stress-energy tensor of the quantized massive scalar field in higher dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini spacetimes. The stress-energy tensor is calculated within the framework of the Schwinger-DeWitt approach. It is shown that in $N$-dimensional spacetime the main approximation can be obtained from the effective action constructed form the coincidence limit of the Hadamard-DeWitt coefficient $a_{k},$ where $k-1$ is the integer part of $N/2$. The back reaction of the quantized field upon the black hole spacetime is analyzed and the quantum-corrected Kom…
A method is given to compute the stress-energy tensor for a massless minimally coupled scalar field in a spacetime where a black hole forms from the collapse of a spherically symmetric null shell in four dimensions. Part of the method involves matching the modes for the in vacuum state to a complete set of modes in Schwarzschild spacetime. The other part involves subtracting from the unrenormalized expression for the stress-energy tensor when the field is in the in vacuum state, the corresponding expression when the field is in the Unruh state and adding to this the renormalized stress-energy …
Analytical approximations for ${< ϕ^2 >}$ and ${< T^μ_ν >}$ of a quantized scalar field in static spherically symmetric spacetimes are obtained. The field is assumed to be both massive and massless, with an arbitrary coupling $ξ$ to the scalar curvature, and in a zero temperature vacuum state. The expressions for ${< ϕ^2 >}$ and ${< T^μ_ν >}$ are divided into low- and high-frequency parts. The contributions of the high-frequency modes to these quantities are calculated for an arbitrary quantum state. As an example, the low-frequency contributions to ${< ϕ^2 >}$ and ${< T^μ_ν >}$ are calculated…
A sort of planar tensor networks with tensor constraints is investigated as a model for holography. We study the greedy algorithm generated by tensor constraints and propose the notion of critical protection (CP) against the action of greedy algorithm. For given tensor constraints, a CP tensor chain can be defined. We further find that the ability of quantum error correction (QEC), the non-flatness of entanglement spectrum (ES) and the correlation function can be quantitatively evaluated by the geometric structure of CP tensor chain. Four classes of tensor networks with different properties of…
A representation theory of the quantized Poincaré ($κ$-Poincaré) algebra (QPA) is developed. We show that the representations of this algebra are closely connected with the representations of the non-deformed Poincaré algebra. A theory of tensor operators for QPA is considered in detail. Necessary and sufficient conditions are found in order for scalars to be invariants. Covariant components of the four-momenta and the Pauli-Lubanski vector are explicitly constructed. These results are used for the construction of some q-relativistic equations. The Wigner-Eckart theorem for QPA is proven.
We develop the Hadamard renormalization of the stress-energy tensor for a massive scalar field theory defined on a general spacetime of arbitrary dimension. Our formalism could be helpful in treating some aspects of the quantum physics of extra spatial dimensions. More precisely, for spacetime dimension up to six, we explicitly describe the Hadamard renormalization procedure and for spacetime dimension from seven to eleven, we provide the framework permitting the interested reader to perform this procedure explicitly in a given spacetime. We complete our study (i) by considering the ambiguitie…
We consider entanglement entropy in the context of gauge/gravity duality for conformal field theories in even dimensions. The holographic prescription due to Ryu and Takayanagi (RT) leads to an equation describing how the entangling surface extends into the bulk geometry. We show that setting to zero the time-time component of the Brown-York stress tensor evaluated on the co-dimension one entangling surface, leads to the same equation. By considering a spherical entangling surface as an example, we observe that Euclidean action methods in AdS/CFT will lead to the RT area functional arising as …
We compute the multipartite entanglement measures such as the global entanglement of various one- and two-dimensional quantum systems to probe the quantum criticality based on the matrix and tensor product states (MPSs/TPSs). We use infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) method to find the ground states numerically in the form of MPSs/TPSs, and then evaluate their entanglement measures by the method of tensor renormalization group (TRG). We find these entanglement measures can characterize the quantum phase transitions by their derivative discontinuity right at the critical points in …
We elaborate on a previous proposal by Hartman and Maldacena on a tensor network which accounts for the scaling of the entanglement entropy in a system at a finite temperature. In this construction, the ordinary entanglement renormalization flow given by the class of tensor networks known as the Multi Scale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz (MERA), is supplemented by an additional entanglement structure at the length scale fixed by the temperature. The network comprises two copies of a MERA circuit with a fixed number of layers and a pure matrix product state which joins both copies by entan…
Despite the fundamental importance of quantum entanglement in many-body systems, our understanding is mostly limited to bipartite situations. Indeed, even defining appropriate notions of multipartite entanglement is a significant challenge for general quantum systems. In this work, we initiate the study of multipartite entanglement in a rich, yet tractable class of quantum states called stabilizer tensor networks. We demonstrate that, for generic stabilizer tensor networks, the geometry of the tensor network informs the multipartite entanglement structure of the state. In particular, we show t…
From the constructions of the quantum spacetime, a four dimensional quantized spacetime can be embedded in a five dimensional continuous spacetime. Thus to observe from the five dimensional continuous spacetime where the four dimensional quantized spacetime is embedded, there exist the energy-momentum flows between the five dimensional continuous spacetime and the four dimensional quantized spacetime. This makes the energy-momentum not locally conserved generally on the four dimensional quantized spacetime. We propose that energy-momentum tensors of noncommutative field theories constructed fr…
We consider a frustrated anti-ferromagnetic triangular lattice Hamiltonian and show that the properties of the manifold of its degenerated ground state are represented by a novel type of tensor networks. These tensor networks are not based on ancillary maximally entangled pairs, but rather on triangular W-like simplices. Anti-ferromagnetic triangular frustration is then related to ancillary W-states in contrast to ferromagnetic order which emerges from the contraction of GHZ-like triangular simplices. We further discuss the outwards entangling power of various simplices. This analysis suggests…
We propose the entanglement bipartitioning approach to design an optimal network structure of the tree-tensor-network (TTN) for quantum many-body systems. Given an exact ground-state wavefunction, we perform sequential bipartitioning of spin-cluster nodes so as to minimize the mutual information or the maximum loss of the entanglement entropy associated with the branch to be bipartitioned. We demonstrate that entanglement bipartitioning of up to 16 sites gives rise to nontrivial tree network structures for $S=1/2$ Heisenberg models in one and two dimensions. The resulting TTNs enable us to obt…
This is a short review on selected theory developments on Tensor Network (TN) states for strongly correlated systems. Specifically, we briefly review the effect of symmetries in TN states, fermionic TNs, the calculation of entanglement Hamiltonians from Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS), and the relation between the Multi-scale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz (MERA) and the AdS/CFT or gauge/gravity duality. We stress the role played by entanglement in the emergence of several physical properties and objects through the TN language. Some recent results along these lines are also discus…
"Curvepole (2,0)-theory" is a deformation of the (2,0)-theory with nonlocal interactions. A "curvepole" is defined as a two-dimensional generalization of a dipole. It is an object of fixed two-dimensional shape whose boundary is a charged curve that interacts with a two-form gauge field. Curvepole theory was previously only defined indirectly via M-theory. Here we propose a supersymmetric Lagrangian, constructed explicitly up to quartic terms, for an "abelian" curvepole theory, which is an interacting deformation of the free (2,0) tensor mutliplet. This theory contains fields whose quanta are …
In tensor networks, a geometric operation of pushing a bond cut surface toward a minimal surface corresponds to entanglement distillation. Cutting bonds defines a reduced transition matrix on the bond cut surface and the associated quantum state naturally emerges from it. We justify this picture quantitatively by evaluating the trace distance between the maximally entangled states and the states on bond cut surfaces in the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) and matrix product states in a canonical form. Our numerical result for the random MERA is in a reasonable agreement w…
We consider the effects of entanglement in the initial quantum state of scalar and tensor fluctuations during inflation. We allow the gauge-invariant scalar and tensor fluctuations to be entangled in the initial state and compute modifications to the various cosmological power spectra. We compute the angular power spectra ($C_l$'s) for some specific cases of our entangled state and discuss what signals one might expect to find in CMB data. This entanglement also can break rotational invariance, allowing for the possibility that some of the large scale anomalies in the CMB power spectrum might …
We study the entanglement structure of states dual to multiboundary wormhole geometries using tensor network models. Perfect and random tensor networks tiling the hyperbolic plane have been shown to provide good models of the entanglement structure in holography. We extend this by quotienting the plane by discrete isometries to obtain models of the multiboundary states. We show that there are networks where the entanglement structure is purely bipartite, extending results obtained in the large temperature limit. We analyse the entanglement structure in a range of examples.
A massive scalar field is quantized in the background of a cosmic string which is generalized to a static flux-carrying codimension-2 brane in the locally flat multidimensional space-time. We find that the finite energy-momentum tensor is induced in the vacuum. The dependence of the tensor components on the brane flux and tension, as well as on the coupling to the space-time curvature scalar, is comprehensively analyzed. The tensor components are holomorphic functions of space dimension, decreasing exponentially with the distance from the brane. The case of the massless quantized scalar field …
We explore a class of random tensor network models with "stabilizer" local tensors which we name Random Stabilizer Tensor Networks (RSTNs). For RSTNs defined on a two-dimensional square lattice, we perform extensive numerical studies of entanglement phase transitions between volume-law and area-law entangled phases of the one-dimensional boundary states. These transitions occur when either (a) the bond dimension $D$ of the constituent tensors is varied, or (b) the tensor network is subject to random breaking of bulk bonds, implemented by forced measurements. In the absence of broken bonds, we …

We investigate a recent conjecture connecting the AdS/CFT correspondence and entanglement renormalization tensor network states (MERA). The proposal interprets the tensor connectivity of the MERA states associated to quantum many body systems at criticality, in terms of a dual holographic geometry which accounts for the qualitative aspects of the entanglement and the correlations in these systems. In this work, some generic features of the entanglement entropy and the two point functions in the ground state of one dimensional gapped systems are considered through a tensor network state. The te…
We consider entanglement across a planar boundary in flat space. Entanglement entropy is usually thought of as the von Neumann entropy of a reduced density matrix, but it can also be thought of as half the von Neumann entropy of a product of reduced density matrices on the left and right. The latter form allows a natural regulator in which two cones are smoothed into a Euclidean hourglass geometry. Since there is no need to tensor-factor the Hilbert space, the regulated entropy is manifestly gauge-invariant and has a manifest state-counting interpretation. We explore this prescription for scal…
We introduce a novel class of phase transitions separating quantum states with different entanglement features. An example of such an "entanglement phase transition" is provided by the many-body localization transition in disordered quantum systems, as it separates highly entangled thermal states at weak disorder from many-body localized states with low entanglement at strong disorder. In the spirit of random matrix theory, we describe a simple model for such transitions where a physical quantum many-body system lives at the "holographic" boundary of a bulk random tensor network. Using a repli…
