In this paper, we consider homogenization of the Landau-Lifshitz equation with a highly oscillatory material coefficient with period $\varepsilon$ modeling a ferromagnetic composite. We derive equations for the homogenized solution to the problem and the corresponding correctors and obtain estimates for the difference between the exact and homogenized solution as well as corrected approximations to the solution. Convergence rates in $\varepsilon$ over times $O(\varepsilon^σ)$ with $0\leq σ\leq 2$ are given in the Sobolev norm $H^q$, where $q$ is limited by the regularity of the solution to the detailed Landau-Lifshitz equation and the homogenized equation. The rates depend on $q$, $σ$ and the the number of correctors.
Following the ideas of V. V. Zhikov and A. L. Pyatnitski, and more precisely the stochastic two-scale convergence, this paper establishes a homogenization theorem in a stochastic setting for two nonlinear equations : the equation of harmonic maps into the sphere and the Landau-Lifschitz equation. These equations have strong nonlinear features, in particular, in general their solutions are not unique.
The full Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with periodic material coefficients and natural boundary condition is employed to model the magnetization dynamics in composite ferromagnets. In this work, we establish the convergence between the homogenized solution and the original solution via a Lax equivalence theorem kind of argument. There are a few technical difficulties, including: 1) it is proven the classic choice of corrector to homogenization cannot provide the convergence result in the $H^1$ norm; 2) a boundary layer is induced due to the natural boundary condition; 3) the presence of str…
The numerical approximation for the Landau-Lifshitz equation, the dynamics of magnetization in a ferromagnetic material, is taken into consideration. This highly nonlinear equation, with a non-convex constraint, has several equivalent forms, and involves solving an auxiliary problem in the infinite domain. All these features have posed interesting challenges in developing numerical methods. In this paper, we first present a fully discrete semi-implicit method for solving the Landau-Lifshitz equation based on the second-order backward differentiation formula and the one-sided extrapolation (usi…
The Landau--Lifshitz equation describes the behaviour of magnetic domains in ferromagnetic structures. Recently such structures have been found to be favourable for storing digital data. Stability of magnetic domains is important for this. Consequently, asymptotic stability of the equilibrium points in the Landau--Lifshitz equation are established. A suitable Lyapunov function is presented.
We study the Landau-Lifshitz equation of ferromagnetism on $\mathbb{R}^2$ with an easy-axis anisotropy. We give the necessary condition for the existence of the finite energy vortex solutions and show the behaviors of the solutions.
In this paper, we prove some blow-up criteria for the 3D Boussinesq system with zero heat conductivity and MHD system and Landau-Lifshitz equations in a bounded domain.
We consider nontrivial finite energy traveling waves for the Landau-Lifshitz equation with easy-plane anisotropy. Our main result is the existence of a minimal energy for these traveling waves, in dimensions two, three and four. The proof relies on a priori estimates related with the theory of harmonic maps and the connection of the Landau-Lifshitz equation with the kernels appearing in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.
We consider the time-dependent Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. We prove that each weak solution coincides with the (unique) strong solution, as long as the latter exists in time. Unlike available results in the literature, our analysis also includes the physically relevant lower-order terms like Zeeman contribution, anisotropy, stray field, and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (which accounts for the emergence of magnetic Skyrmions). Moreover, our proof gives a template on how to approach weak-strong uniqueness for even more complicated problems, where LLG is (nonlinearly) coupled to ot…
We study the Landau-Lifshitz system associated with Maxwell equations in a bilayered ferromagnetic body when super-exchange and surface anisotropy interactions are present in the spacer in-between the layers. In the presence of these surface energies, the Neumann boundary condition becomes nonlinear. We prove, in three dimensions, the existence of global weak solutions to the Landau-Lifshitz-Maxwell system with nonlinear Neumann boundary conditions.
We study semilinear Maxwell-Landau-Lifshitz systems in one space dimension. For highly oscillatory and prepared initial data, we construct WKB approximate solutions over long times $O(1/\e)$. The leading terms of the WKB solutions solve cubic Schrödinger equations. We show that the nonlinear normal form method of Joly, Métivier and Rauch applies to this context. This implies that the Schrödinger approximation stays close to the exact solution of Maxwell-Landau-Lifshitz over its existence time. In the context of Maxwell-Landau-Lifshitz, this extends the analysis of Colin and Lannes from times $…
The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation perturbed by a multiplicative space-dependent noise is considered for a ferromagnet filling a bounded three-dimensional domain. We show the existence of weak martingale solutions taking values in a sphere $\mathbb S^2$. The regularity of weak solutions is also discussed. Some of the regularity results are new even for the deterministic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.
In this paper, we consider the Landau-Lifshitz equation of the ferromagnetic spin chain from $\R^2$ to the unit sphere $S^2$ under the general Oseen-Frank energy. We obtain global existence and uniqueness of weak solutions for large energy data; moreover, the number of singular points is finite.
We establish the global well-posedness of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in $\mathbb R^n$ for any initial data ${\bf m}_0\in H^1_*(\mathbb R^n,\mathbb S^2)$ whose gradient belongs to the Morrey space $M^{2,2}(\mathbb R^n)$ with small norm $\displaystyle\|\nabla {\bf m}_0\|_{M^{2,2}(\mathbb R^n)}$. The method is based on priori estimates of a dissipative Schrödinger equation of Ginzburg-Landau types obtained from the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation by the moving frame technique.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of non-trivial stable solutions to Landau-Lifshitz-Maxwell equations with Dirichlet boundary condition for large anisotropies and small domains, where the domains are non-simply connected.
In this paper, we provide a precise description of the compatibility conditions for the initial data so that one can show the existence and uniqueness of regular short-time solution to the Neumann initial-boundary problem of a class of Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert system with spin-polarized transport, which is a strong nonlinear coupled parabolic system with non-local energy.
In this article, we bring in Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch(LLB) equation on $m$-dimensional closed Riemannian manifold and prove that it admits a unique local solution. In addition, if $m\geqslant3$ and $L^{\infty}-$norm of initial data is sufficiently small, the solution can be extended globally. Moreover, if $m=2$, we can prove that the unique solution is global without assuming small initial data.
We show that Hashimoto transformation is applicable to the one dimensional stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation and transforms it to the stochastic generalized heat equation with nonlocal (in space) interaction.
We prove existence, uniqueness and asymptotics of global smooth solutions for the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in dimension $n \ge 3$, valid under a smallness condition of initial gradients in the $L^n$ norm. The argument is based on the method of moving frames that produces a covariant complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, and a priori estimates that we obtain by the method of weighted-in-time norms as introduced by Fujita and Kato.
We pursue our work on the asymptotic regimes of the Landau-Lifshitz equation for bi-axial ferromagnets. We put the focus on the cubic Schr{ö}dinger equation, which is known to describe the dynamics in a regime of strong easy-axis anisotropy. In any dimension, we rigorously prove this claim for solutions with sufficient regularity. In this regime, we additionally classify the one-dimensional solitons of the Landau-Lifshitz equation and quantify their convergence towards the solitons of the one-dimensional cubic Schr{ö}dinger equation.
The existence of global weak solutions to a coupled spin drift-diffusion and Maxwell-Landau-Lifshitz system is proved. The equations are considered in a two-dimensional magnetic layer structure and are supplemented with Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions. The spin drift-diffusion model for the charge density and spin density vector is the diffusion limit of a spinorial Boltzmann equation for a vanishing spin polarization constant. The Maxwell-Landau-Lifshitz system consists of the time-dependent Maxwell equations for the electric and magnetic fields and of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equati…
We prove that in dimensions three and higher the Landau-Lifshitz- Gilbert equation with small initial data in the critical Besov space is globally wellposed in a uniform way with respect to the Gilbert damping parameter. Then we show that the global solution converges to that of the Schrodinger maps in the natural space as the Gilbert damping term vanishes. The proof is based on some studies on the derivative Ginzburg-Landau equations.
We examine a stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation based on an exchange energy functional containing second-order derivatives of the unknown field. Such regularizations are featured in advanced micromagnetic models recently introduced in connection with nanoscale topological solitons. We show that, in contrast to the classical stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation based on the Dirichlet energy alone, the regularized equation is solvable in the stochastically strong sense. As a consequence it preserves the topology of the initial data, almost surely.
The Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch (LLB) equation is a formulation of dynamic micromagnetics valid at all temperatures, treating both the transverse and longitudinal relaxation components important for high-temperature applications. We study LLB equation in case the temperature raised higher than the Curie temperature. The existence of weak solution is showed and its regularity properties are also discussed. In this way, we lay foundations for the rigorous theory of LLB equation that is currently not available.
It is well-known that the dynamics of biaxial ferromagnets with a strong easy-plane anisotropy is essentially governed by the Sine-Gordon equation. In this paper, we provide a rigorous justification to this observation. More precisely, we show the convergence of the solutions to the Landau-Lifshitz equation for biaxial ferromagnets towards the solutions to the Sine-Gordon equation in the regime of a strong easy-plane anisotropy. Moreover, we establish the sharpness of our convergence result. This result holds for solutions to the Landau-Lifshitz equation in high order Sobolev spaces. We first …
The Landau-Lifshitz equation describes the behaviour of magnetization inside a ferromagnetic object. It is known that the Landau-Lifshitz equation has an infinite number of stable equilibrium points. The existence of multiple stable equilibria is closely related to hysteresis. This is a phenomenon that is often characterized by a looping behaviour; however, the existence of a loop is not sufficient to identify hysteretic systems, but is defined more precisely as the presence of looping as the frequency of the input goes to zero. We describe these two approaches to identification of hysteresis …
We consider a homogenization problem for magnetic Ginzburg-Landau functional in domains with large number of small holes. For sufficiently strong magnetic field, a large number of vortices is formed and they are pinned by the holes. We establish a scaling relation between sizes of holes and the magnitude of the external magnetic field when pinned vortices are multiple and their homogenized density is described by a hierarchy of variational problems. This stands in sharp contrast with homogeneous superconductors, where all vortices are known to be simple. The proof is based on $Γ$-convergence a…
We give a survey on some recent results concerning the Landau-Lifshitz equation, a fundamental nonlinear PDE with a strong geometric content, describing the dynamics of the magnetization in ferromagnetic materials. We revisit the Cauchy problem for the anisotropic Landau-Lifshitz equation, without dissipation, for smooth solutions, and also in the energy space in dimension one. We also examine two approximations of the Landau-Lifshitz equation given by of the Sine-Gordon equation and cubic Schrödinger equations, arising in certain singular limits of strong easy-plane and easy-axis anisotropy, …
The stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation describes the phase spins in a ferromagnetic material and has significant role in simulating heat-assisted magnetic recording. In this paper, we consider the deviation of the solution to the 1-D stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation, that is, we give the asymptotic behavior of the trajectory $\frac{u_\varepsilon-u_0}{\sqrt{\varepsilon}λ(\varepsilon)}$ as $\varepsilon\rightarrow 0+$, for $λ(\varepsilon)=\frac{1}{\sqrt{\varepsilon}}$ and $1$ respectively. In other words, the large deviation principle and the central limit theorem are established …
We consider an asymptotic regime for two-dimensional ferromagnetic films that is consistent with the formation of transition layers (Néel walls). We first establish compactness of S2-valued magnetizations in the energetic regime of Néel walls and characterize the set of accumulation points. We then prove that Néel walls are asymptotically the unique energy minimizing configurations. We finally study the corresponding dynamical issues, namely the compactness properties of the magnetizations under the flow of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.
Ferromagnetic materials tend to develop very complex magnetization patterns whose time evolution is modeled by the so-called Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation (LLG). In this paper, we construct time-periodic solutions for LLG in the regime of soft and small ferromagnetic particles which satisfy a certain shape condition. Roughly speaking, it is assumed that the length of the particle is greater than its hight and its width. The approach is based on a perturbation argument and the spectral analysis of the corresponding linearized problem as well as the theory of sectorial operators.
We focus on the existence and uniqueness of the three-dimensional Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation supplemented with the initial data in Besov space $\dot{B}_{2,1}^{\frac{3}{2}}$. Utilizing a new commutator estimate, we establish the local existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for any initial data in $\dot{B}_{2,1}^{\frac{3}{2}}$. When the initial data is small enough in $\dot{B}_{2,1}^{\frac{3}{2}}$, we obtain the global existence and uniqueness. Furthermore, we also establish a blow-up criterion of the solution to the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation and then we prove the global existence…
We study a 2-scale version of the Landau-Lifshitz system of ferromagnetism, introduced by Starynkevitch to modelize hysteresis: the response of the magnetization is fast compared to a slowly varying applied magnetic fi eld. Taking the exchange term into account, in space dimension 3, we prove that, under some natural stability assumption on the equilibria of the system, the strong solutions follow the dynamics of these equilibria. We also give explicit examples of relevant equilibria and exterior magnetic fields, when the ferromagnetic medium occupies some ellipsoidal domain.
We follow the idea of Wang \cite{W} to show the existence of global weak solutions to the Cauchy problems of Landau-Lifshtiz type equations and related heat flows from a $n$-dimensional Euclidean domain $\Om$ or a $n$-dimensional closed Riemannian manifold $M$ into a 2-dimensional unit sphere $\U^{2}$. Our conclusions extend a series of related results obtained in the previous literature.
We rigorously derive a weak form of the Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner equation as the homogenization limit of a Stefan-type problem describing reaction-controlled coarsening of a large number of small spherical particles. Moreover, we deduce that the effective mean-field description holds true in the particular limit of vanishing surface-area density of particles.
Motivated by recent models of current driven magnetization dynamics, we examine the coupling of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation and classical electron transport governed by the Vlasov-Maxwell system. The interaction is based on space-time gyro-coupling in the form of emergent electromagnetic fields of quantized helicity that add up to the conventional Maxwell fields. We construct global weak solutions of the coupled system in the framework of frustrated magnets with competing first and second order gradient interactions known to host topological solitons such as magnetic skyrmions and hop…
In this paper, we prove that the solution of the Landau-Lifshitz flow $u(t,x)$ from $\mathbb{H}^2$ to $\mathbb{H}^2$ converges to some harmonic map as $t\to\infty$. The essential observation is that although there exist infinite numbers of harmonic maps from $\Bbb H^2$ to $\Bbb H^2$, the heat flow initiated from $u(t,x)$ for any given $t>0$ converges to the same harmonic map as the heat flow initiated from $u(0,x)$. This observation enables us to construct a variant of Tao's caloric gauge to reduce the convergence to harmonic maps for the Landau-Lifshitz flow to the decay of the corresponding …
In this paper, we consider a model for the spin-magnetization system that takes into account the diffusion process of the spin accumulation. This model consists of the Landau-Lifshitz equation describing the precession of the magnetization, coupled with a quasi-linear parabolic equation describing the diffusion of the spin accumulation. This paper establishes the global existence and uniqueness of weak solutions for large initial data in $\Bbb R^2$. Moreover, partial regularity is shown. In particular, the solution is regular on $\Bbb R^2\times(0,\infty)$ with the exception of at most finite s…
We consider the initial boundary value problem of Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation on three-dimensional ferromagnetic films, where the effective field contains the stray field controlled by Maxwell equation and the exchange field contains exchange constant. In this paper, we establish the existence of weak solutions of the equation by using the Faedo-Galerkin approximation method. We also derive its two-dimensional limit equation in a mathematically rigorous way when the film thickness tends to zero under appropriate compactness conditions. Moreover, we obtain an equation that can better describ…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behaviors of finite energy solutions to the Landau-Lifshitz flows from $\Bbb R^2$ into Kähler manifolds. First, we prove that the solution with initial data below the critical energy converges to a constant map in the energy space as $t\to \infty$ for the compact Riemannian surface targets. In particular, when the target is a two dimensional sphere, we prove that the solution to the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with initial data having an energy below $4π$ converges to some constant map in the energy space. Second, for general compact Kähler manifolds…
The Landau--Lifshitz equation describes the dynamics of magnetization inside a ferromagnet. This equation is nonlinear and has an infinite number of stable equilibria. It is desirable to control the system from one equilibrium to another. A control that moves the system from an arbitrary initial state, including an equilibrium point, to a specified equilibrium is presented. It is proven that the second point is an asymptotically stable equilibrium of the controlled system. The results are illustrated with some simulations.
We study the convergence of the system of the Allen-Cahn equations to the weak solution for the multi-phase mean curvature flow in the sense of Brakke. The Landau-Lifshitz equation in this paper can be regarded as a system of Allen-Cahn equations with the Lagrange multiplier, which is a phase field model of the multi-phase mean curvature flow. Under an assumption that the limit of the energies of the solutions for the equations matches with the total variation for the singular limit of the solutions, we show that the family of the varifolds derived from the energies is a Brakke flow.
The Landau-Lifshitz equation is a coupled set of nonlinear partial differential equations that describes the dynamics of magnetization in a ferromagnet. This equation has an infinite number of stable equilibria. Steering the system from one equilibrium to another is a problem of both theoretical and practical interest. Since the objective is to steer between equilibria, approaches based on linearization are not appropriate. It is proven that affine proportional control can be used to steer the system from an arbitrary initial state, including an equilibrium point, to a specified equilibrium po…
We consider the initial value problem for the Landau-Lifshitz equation with helicity term (chiral interaction term), which arises from the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We prove that it is well-posed locally-in-time in the space $\bar{k} +H^s$ for $s\ge 3$ with $s\in \mathbb{Z}$ and $\bar{k}={}^t(0,0,1)$. We also show that if we further assume that the solution is homotopic to constant maps, then local well-posedness holds in the space $\bar{k} + H^s$ for $s>2$ with $s\in \mathbb{R}$. Our proof is base on the analysis via the modified Schrödinger map equation.
Landau and Lifshitz [4, Section 35] conjectured that for an arbitrary $k\in \mathbb{R}$, there exists the motion of a quantum mechanical particle under the inverse square potential $k|x|^{-2}$, $x \in \mathbb{R}^3$. When $k$ is negative and $| k |$ is very large, the inverse square potential becomes very deep and generates the very strong attractive force, and hence a quantum mechanical particle is likely to fall down to the origin (the center of the inverse square potential). Therefore this conjecture (Landau-Lifshitz's conjecture) seems to be wrong at first sight. We however prove Landau-Lif…
We establish a framework to construct a global solution in the space of finite energy to a general form of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in $\mathbb{R}^2$. Our characterization yields a partially regular solution, smooth away from a 2-dimensional locally finite Hausdorff measure set. This construction relies on approximation by discretization, using the special geometry to express an equivalent system whose highest order terms are linear and the translation of the machinery of linear estimates on the fundamental solution from the continuous setting into the discrete setting. This method…
We investigate, on a bounded domain $Ω$ of $\R^2$ with fixed $S^1$-valued boundary condition $g$ of degree $d>0$, the asymptotic behaviour of solutions $u_{\varepsilon,δ}$ of a class of Ginzburg-Landau equations driven by two parameter : the usual Ginzburg-Landau parameter, denoted $\varepsilon$, and the scale parameter $δ$ of a geometry provided by a field of $2\times 2$ positive definite matrices $x\to A(\frac{x}δ)$. The field $\R^2\ni x\to A(x)$ is of class $W^{2,\infty}$ and periodic. We show, for a suitable choice of the $\varepsilon$'s depending on $δ$, the existence of a limit configura…
The main purpose of this paper is the analytical study of self-shrinker solutions of the one-dimensional Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation (LLG), a model describing the dynamics for the spin in ferromagnetic materials. We show that there is a unique smooth family of backward self-similar solutions to the LLG equation, up to symmetries, and we establish their asymptotics. Moreover, we obtain that in the presence of damping, the trajectories of the self-similar profiles converge to great circles on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, at an exponential rate. In particular, the results presented in this pap…
In this paper we deal with weak solutions to the Maxwell-Landau-Lifshitz equations and to the Hall-Magneto-Hydrodynamic equations. First we prove that these solutions satisfy some weak-strong uniqueness property. Then we investigate the validity of energy identities. In particular we give a sufficient condition on the regularity of weak solutions to rule out anomalous dissipation. In the case of the Hall-Magneto-Hydrodynamic equations we also give a sufficient condition to guarantee the magneto-helicity identity. Our conditions correspond to the same heuristic scaling as the one introduced by …
The stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation in dimensions 1; 2; and 3 perturbed by pure jump noise is considered in the Marcus canonical form. A proof for existence of a martingale solution is given. The proof uses the Faedo-Galerkin approximation; which is followed by compactness and tightness arguments. This is followed by use of the Jakubowski's version of the Skorohod Theorem. Pathwise uniqueness and the theory of Yamada and Watanabe give the existence of a strong solution for dimensions 1 and 2. A weak convergence method is later used to establish a Wentzell-Freidlin type large deviatio…
The Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch equation perturbed by a space-dependent noise was proposed in Garanin 1991 as a model for evolution of spins in ferromagnatic materials at the full range of temperatures, including the temperatures higher than the Curie temperature. In the case of a ferromagnet filling a bounded domain $D\subset \mathbb R^d$, $d=1,2,3$, we show the existence of strong (in the sense of PDEs) martingale solutions. Furthermore, in cases $d=1,2$ we prove uniqueness of pathwise solutions and the existence of invariant measures.
We prove a global well-posedness result for the Landau-Lifshitz equation with Gilbert damping provided that the BMO semi-norm of the initial data is small. As a consequence, we deduce the existence of self-similar solutions in any dimension. In the one-dimensional case, we characterize the self-similar solutions associated with an initial data given by some ($\mathbb{S}^2$-valued) step function and establish their stability. We also show the existence of multiple solutions if the damping is strong enough. Our arguments rely on the study of a dissipative quasilinear Schrödinger obtained via the…
The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski equation describes magnetization dynamics in the presence of an applied field and a spin polarized current. In the case of axial symmetry and with focus on one space dimension, we investigate the emergence of space-time patterns in the form of wavetrains and coherent structures, whose local wavenumber varies in space. A major part of this study concerns existence and stability of wavetrains and of front- and domain wall-type coherent structures whose profiles asymptote to wavetrains or the constant up-/down-magnetizations. For certain polarization the Sl…
