In this paper, we present a high resolution microwave imaging technique using a compact and low cost single channel Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar based on Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar (CSAR) technique. We develop an algorithm to reconstruct the image from the raw data and analyse different aspects of the system analytically. Furthermore, we discuss the differences between the proposed systems in the literature and the one presented in this work.
Finally, we apply the proposed approach to the experimental data collected from a single channel FMCW radar operating at $\rm 79 \;GHz$ and present the results.
In this paper, we present 3D high resolution radar imaging process at millimeter-Wave (mmWave) frequencies by creating the effect of a large aperture synthetically. We use a low cost fully integrated Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar operating at $\rm 79\;GHz$ and then perform Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging in the near-filed zone. At the end, we conduct a real experiment and present the reconstructed image.
In this paper, we propose graph signal processing based imaging for synthetic aperture radar. We present a modified version of fused least absolute shrinkage and selection operator to cater for graph structure of the radar image. We solve the cost function via alternating direction method of multipliers. Our method provides improved denoising and resolution enhancing capabilities. It can also accommodate the compressed sensing framework quite easily. Experimental results corroborate the validity of our proposed methodology.
We present a framework for simulating realistic inverse synthetic aperture radar images of automotive targets at millimeter wave frequencies. The model incorporates radar scattering phenomenology of commonly found vehicles along with range-Doppler based clutter and receiver noise. These images provide insights into the physical dimensions of the target, the number of wheels and the trajectory undertaken by the target. The model is experimentally validated with measurement data gathered from an automotive radar. The images from the simulation database are subsequently classified using both trad…
Due to the rapid increase in 76 GHz automotive spectrum use in recent years, wireless interference is becoming a legitimate area of concern. However, the recent rise in interest of automated vehicles (AVs) has also spurred new growth and adoption of low frequency vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications in and around the 5.8 GHz unlicensed bands, opening the possibility for communications spectrum reuse in the form of joint radar-communications (JRC). In this work, we present a low frequency 5.9 GHz side-looking polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for automotive use, utilizing a rang…
Automotive targets undergoing turns in road junctions offer large synthetic apertures over short dwell times to automotive radars that can be exploited for obtaining fine cross-range resolution. Likewise, the wide bandwidths of the automotive radar signal yield high-range resolution profiles. Together, they are exploited for generating inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) images that offer rich information regarding the target vehicle's size, shape, and trajectory which is useful for object recognition and classification. However, a key requirement for ISAR is translation motion compensatio…
The stretch processing architecture is commonly used for frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar due to its inexpensive hardware, low sampling rate, and simple architecture. However, the stretch processing architecture is not able to achieve optimal Signal to Noise ratio (SNR) in comparison to the matched-filter architecture. In this paper, we aim to propose a method whereby stretch processing can achieve optimal SNR. Hence, we develop a novel processing method to enable applying a matched filter to the output of the stretch processing. The proposed architecture achieves optimal SNR w…
The wide bandwidths available at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies have offered exciting potential to wireless communication systems and radar alike. Communication systems can offer higher rates and support more users with mmWave bands while radar systems can benefit from higher resolution captures. This leads to the possibility that portions of mmWave spectrum will be occupied by both communication and radar (e.g., 60 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band). This potential coexistence motivates the work of this paper, in which we present a design that can enable simultaneous, i…
Millimeter wave radars are popularly used in last-mile radar-based defense systems. Detection of low-altitude airborne target using these radars at low-grazing angles is an important problem in the field of electronic warfare, which becomes challenging due to the significant effects of clutters in the terrain. This paper provides both experimental and analytical investigation of micro unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) detection in a rocky terrain using a low grazing angle, surface-sited 24 GHz dual polarized frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar. The radar backscatter signal from the UA…
In this paper, we study the trajectory and resource optimization for lightweight rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system. The UAV's mission is to perform SAR imaging of a given area of interest (AoI). In this setup, real-time communication with a base station (BS) is required to facilitate live mission planning for the drone. For this purpose, a non-convex mixed-integer non-linear program (MINLP) is formulated such that the UAV resources and three-dimensional (3D) trajectory are jointly optimized for maximization of the drone radar grou…
A cost-effective millimeter-wave (MMW) joint radar-communication (JRC) system with super resolution is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, using optical heterodyne up-conversion and self-coherent detection down-conversion techniques. The point lies in the designed coherent dual-band constant envelope linear frequency modulation-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (LFM-OFDM) signal with opposite phase modulation indexes for the JRC system. Then the self-coherent detection, as a simple and low-cost means, is accordingly facilitated for both de-chirping of MMW radar and frequency dow…
Millimeter-wave (mmW) radar is widely applied to advanced autopilot assistance systems. However, its small antenna aperture causes a low imaging resolution. In this paper, a new distributed mmW radar system is designed to solve this problem. It forms a large sparse virtual planar array to enlarge the aperture, using multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) processing. However, in this system, traditional imaging methods cannot apply to the sparse array. Therefore, we also propose a 3D super-resolution imaging method specifically for this system in this paper. The proposed method consists of t…
A problem with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is that due to the poor penetrating action of electromagnetic waves within solid bodies, the ability to observe through distributed targets is precluded. In this context, indeed, imaging is only possible on targets distribute on the scene surface. This work describes an imaging method based on the analysis of micro-motions present on volcanoes and generated by the underground Earth's heat. Processing the coherent vibrational information embedded on the single SAR image, in the single-look-complex configuration, the sound information is exploited, p…
We here propose a novel cost-effective millimeter-level resolution photonic multiband radar system using a single MZM driven by a 1-GHz-bandwidth LFM signal. It experimentally shows an ~8.5-mm range resolution through coherence-processing-free multiband data fusion.
A problem with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is that, due to the poor penetrating action of electromagnetic waves inside solid bodies, the capability to observe inside distributed targets is precluded. Under these conditions, imaging action is provided only on the surface of distributed targets. The present work describes an imaging method based on the analysis of micro-movements on the Khnum-Khufu Pyramid, which are usually generated by background seismic waves. The results obtained prove to be very promising, as high-resolution full 3D tomographic imaging of the pyramid's interior and subsu…
Synergistic design of communications and radar systems with common spectral and hardware resources is heralding a new era of efficiently utilizing a limited radio-frequency spectrum. Such a joint radar-communications (JRC) model has advantages of low-cost, compact size, less power consumption, spectrum sharing, improved performance, and safety due to enhanced information sharing. Today, millimeter-wave (mm-wave) communications have emerged as the preferred technology for short distance wireless links because they provide transmission bandwidth that is several gigahertz wide. This band is also …
Many countries in the world are contaminated with landmines. Several thousand casualties occur every year. Although there are certain types of mines that can be detected from a safe stand-off position with tools, humanitarian demining is still mostly done by hand. As a new approach, an unmanned aerial system (UAS) equipped with a ground penetrating synthetic aperture radar (GPSAR) was developed, which is used to detect landmines, cluster munition, grenades, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The measurement system consists of a multicopter, a total station, an inertial measurement unit (…
We investigate synthesis of a large effective aperture using a sparse array of subarrays. We employ a multi-objective optimization framework for placement of subarrays within a prescribed area dictated by form factor constraints, trading off the smaller beam width obtained by spacing out the subarrays against the grating and side lobes created by sparse placement. We assess the performance of our designs for the fundamental problem of bearing estimation for one or more sources, comparing performance against estimation-theoretic bounds. Our tiled architecture is motivated by recent progress in …
A new method of distortion mitigation for multitarget interferometric angular velocity estimation in millimeter-wave radar is presented. In general, when multiple targets are present, the response of a correlation interferometer is corrupted by intermodulation distortion, making it difficult to estimate individual target angular velocities. We present a distortion mitigation method that works by decomposing the responses at each antenna element into the responses from the individual targets. Data association is performed to match individual target responses at each antenna such that cross-corr…
In this work, a method for directly measuring target velocity in three dimensions using a dual axis correlation interferometric radar is presented. Recent advances have shown that the measurement of a target's angular velocity is possible by correlating the signals measured at spatially diverse aperture locations. By utilizing multiple orthogonal baselines and using conventional Doppler velocity methods to obtain radial velocity, a full three-dimensional velocity vector can be obtained using only three receive antennas and a single transmitter, without the need for tracking. A $\text{41.8 GHz}…
We have recently introduced a modification of the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) method for synthetic aperture radar. This method depends on a tunable, user-defined parameter, $ε$, that allows for quantitative high-resolution imaging. It requires however, relative large single-to-noise ratios (SNR) to work effectively. Here, we first identify the fundamental mechanism in that method that produces high-resolution images. Then we introduce a modification to Kirchhoff Migration (KM) that uses the same mechanism to produces tunable, high-resolution images. This modified KM method can be ap…
The electrocardiogram (ECG) has always been an important biomedical test to diagnose cardiovascular diseases. Current approaches for ECG monitoring are based on body attached electrodes leading to uncomfortable user experience. Therefore, contactless ECG monitoring has drawn tremendous attention, which however remains unsolved. In fact, cardiac electrical-mechanical activities are coupling in a well-coordinated pattern. In this paper, we achieve contactless ECG monitoring by breaking the boundary between the cardiac mechanical and electrical activity. Specifically, we develop a millimeter-wave…
Millimeter-wave radars are being increasingly integrated into commercial vehicles to support advanced driver-assistance system features. A key shortcoming for present-day vehicular radar imaging is poor azimuth resolution (for side-looking operation) due to the form factor limits on antenna size and placement. In this paper, we propose a solution via a new multiple-input and multiple-output synthetic aperture radar (MIMO-SAR) imaging technique, that applies coherent SAR principles to vehicular MIMO radar to improve the side-view (angular) resolution. The proposed 2-stage hierarchical MIMO-SAR …

Millimeter wave (mmWave) vehicular channels are highly dynamic, and the communication link needs to be reconfigured frequently. In this work, we propose to use a passive radar receiver at the roadside unit to reduce the training overhead of establishing an mmWave communication link. Specifically, the passive radar will tap the transmissions from the automotive radars of the vehicles on the road. The spatial covariance of the received radar signals will be estimated and used to establish the communication link. We propose a simplified radar receiver that does not require the transmitted wavefor…
Millimeter wave sensing has recently attracted a lot of attention given its environmental robust nature. In situations where visual sensors like cameras fail to perform, mmwave radars can be used to achieve reliable performance. However, because of the poor scattering performance and lack of texture in millimeter waves, radars can not be used in several situations that require precise identification of objects. In this paper, we take insight from camera fiducials which are very easily identifiable by the camera, and present R-fiducial tags, which smartly augment the current infrastructure to e…
The paper defines a new coordinate system that was developed in 1977-78 for the world's first digital synthetic aperture radar (SAR) ground processor for images from the Seasat-A satellite. The coordinate system is for the range-Doppler paradigm in the context of a spaceborne platform orbiting a rotating planet. The mathematical expressions for the azimuth FM rate, isodoppler lines, target illumination trajectories and antenna attitude determination from Doppler centroid measurements are derived. The method for transforming the SAR images from that SAR digital signal processor that used these …

This paper presents a complete and automatic airborne ground-penetrating synthetic aperture radar (GPSAR) system. The system consists of a spatially calibrated and temporally synchronized industrial grade sensor suite that enables navigation above ground level, radar imaging, and optica…
We analyze synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging of complex ground scenes that contain both stationary and moving targets. In the usual SAR acquisition scheme, we consider ways to preprocess the data so as to separate the contributions of the moving targets from those due to stationary background reflectors. Both components of the data, that is, reflections from stationary and moving targets, are considered as signal that is needed for target imaging and tracking, respectively. The approach we use is to decompose the data matrix into a low rank and a sparse part. This decomposition enables us…
