Landmark recognition and matching is a critical step in many Image Navigation and Registration (INR) models for geostationary satellite services, as well as to maintain the geometric quality assessment (GQA) in the instrument data processing chain of Earth observation satellites. Matching the landmark accurately is of paramount relevance, and the process can be strongly impacted by the cloud contamination of a given landmark. This paper introduces a complete pattern recognition methodology able to detect the presence of clouds over landmarks using Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) data. The methodology is based on the ensemble combination of dedicated support vector machines (SVMs) dependent on the particular landmark and illumination conditions. This divide-and-conquer strategy is motivated by the data complexity and follows a physically-based strategy that considers variability both in seasonality and illumination conditions along the day to split observations. In addition, it allows training the classification scheme with millions of samples at an affordable computational costs. The image archive was composed of 200 landmark test sites with near 7 million multispectral images that correspond to MSG acquisitions during 2010. Results are analyzed in terms of cloud detection accuracy and computational cost. We provide illustrative source code and a portion of the huge training data to the community.

This paper presents a novel approach for landmark recognition in images that we've successfully deployed at Mail ru. This method enables us to recognize famous places, buildings, monuments, and other landmarks in user photos. The main challenge lies in the fact that it's very complicated to give a precise definition of what is and what is not a landmark. Some buildings, statues and natural objects are landmarks; others are not. There's also no database with a fairly large number of landmarks to train a recognition model. A key feature of using landmark recognition in a production environment i…

Face recognition has become an essential task in our lives. However, the current COVID-19 pandemic has led to the widespread use of face masks. The effect of wearing face masks is currently an understudied issue. The aim of this paper is to analyze face detection, face landmarking, and face recognition performance with masked face images. HOG and CNN face detectors are used for face detection in combination with 5-point and 68-point face landmark predictors and VGG16 face recognition model is used for face recognition on masked and unmasked images. We found that the performance of face detecti…
In this paper, we show our solution to the Google Landmark Recognition 2021 Competition. Firstly, embeddings of images are extracted via various architectures (i.e. CNN-, Transformer- and hybrid-based), which are optimized by ArcFace loss. Then we apply an efficient pipeline to re-rank predictions by adjusting the retrieval score with classification logits and non-landmark distractors. Finally, the ensembled model scores 0.489 on the private leaderboard, achieving the 3rd place in the 2021 edition of the Google Landmark Recognition Competition.

The Google-Landmarks-v2 dataset is the biggest worldwide landmarks dataset characterized by a large magnitude of noisiness and diversity. We present a novel landmark retrieval/recognition system, robust to a noisy and diverse dataset, by our team, smlyaka. Our approach is based on deep convolutional neural networks with metric learning, trained by cosine-softmax based losses. Deep metric learning methods are usually sensitive to noise, and it could hinder to learn a reliable metric. To address this issue, we develop an automated data cleaning system. Besides, we devise a discriminative re-rank…
In this paper, we describe an entry to the third Emotion Recognition in the Wild Challenge, EmotiW2015. We detail the associated experiments and show that, through more accurately locating the facial landmarks, and considering only the distances between them, we can achieve a surprising level of performance. The resulting system is not only more accurate than the challenge baseline, but also much simpler.
Recent work by Suenderhauf et al. [1] demonstrated improved visual place recognition using proposal regions coupled with features from convolutional neural networks (CNN) to match landmarks between views. In this work we extend the approach by introducing descriptors built from landmark features which also encode the spatial distribution of the landmarks within a view. Matching descriptors then enforces consistency of the relative positions of landmarks between views. This has a significant impact on performance. For example, in experiments on 10 image-pair datasets, each consisting of 200 urb…

Deep convolutional neural networks have largely benefited computer vision tasks. However, the high computational complexity limits their real-world applications. To this end, many methods have been proposed for efficient network learning, and applications in portable mobile devices. In this paper, we propose a novel \underline{M}oving-\underline{M}obile-\underline{Net}work, named M$^2$Net, for landmark recognition, equipped each landmark image with located geographic information. We intuitively find that M$^2$Net can essentially promote the diversity of the inference path (selected blocks subs…

In this paper, we describe our solution to the Google Landmark Recognition 2019 Challenge held on Kaggle. Due to the large number of classes, noisy data, imbalanced class sizes, and the presence of a significant amount of distractors in the test set, our method is based mainly on retrieval techniques with both global and local CNN approaches. Our full pipeline, after ensembling the models and applying several steps of re-ranking strategies, scores 0.37606 GAP on the private leaderboard which won the 1st place in the competition.
We propose an end-to-end architecture for facial expression recognition. Our model learns an optimal tree topology for facial landmarks, whose traversal generates a sequence from which we obtain an embedding to feed a sequential learner. The proposed architecture incorporates two main streams, one focusing on landmark positions to learn the structure of the face, while the other focuses on patches around the landmarks to learn texture information. Each stream is followed by an attention mechanism and the outputs are fed to a two-stream fusion component to perform the final classification. We c…

We present our third place solution to the Google Landmark Recognition 2020 competition. It is an ensemble of global features only Sub-center ArcFace models. We introduce dynamic margins for ArcFace loss, a family of tune-able margin functions of class size, designed to deal with the extreme imbalance in GLDv2 dataset. Progressive finetuning and careful postprocessing are also key to the solution. Our two submissions scored 0.6344 and 0.6289 on private leaderboard, both ranking third place out of 736 teams.
Cascade regression framework has been shown to be effective for facial landmark detection. It starts from an initial face shape and gradually predicts the face shape update from the local appearance features to generate the facial landmark locations in the next iteration until convergence. In this paper, we improve upon the cascade regression framework and propose the Constrained Joint Cascade Regression Framework (CJCRF) for simultaneous facial action unit recognition and facial landmark detection, which are two related face analysis tasks, but are seldomly exploited together. In particular, …
We introduce a new landmark recognition dataset, which is created with a focus on fair worldwide representation. While previous work proposes to collect as many images as possible from web repositories, we instead argue that such approaches can lead to biased data. To create a more comprehensive and equitable dataset, we start by defining the fair relevance of a landmark to the world population. These relevances are estimated by combining anonymized Google Maps user contribution statistics with the contributors' demographic information. We present a stratification approach and analysis which l…
Although facial landmark localization (FLL) approaches are becoming increasingly accurate for characterizing facial regions, one question remains unanswered: what is the impact of these approaches on subsequent related tasks? In this paper, the focus is put on facial expression recognition (FER), where facial landmarks are used for face registration, which is a common usage. Since the most used datasets for facial landmark localization do not allow for a proper measurement of performance according to the different difficulties (e.g., pose, expression, illumination, occlusion, motion blur), we …

This paper presents a lightweight algorithm for feature extraction, classification of seven different emotions, and facial expression recognition in a real-time manner based on static images of the human face. In this regard, a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural network is trained based on the foregoing algorithm. In order to classify human faces, first, some pre-processing is applied to the input image, which can localize and cut out faces from it. In the next step, a facial landmark detection library is used, which can detect the landmarks of each face. Then, the human face is split into up…
The problem of landmark recognition has achieved excellent results in small-scale datasets. When dealing with large-scale retrieval, issues that were irrelevant with small amount of data, quickly become fundamental for an efficient retrieval phase. In particular, computational time needs to be kept as low as possible, whilst the retrieval accuracy has to be preserved as much as possible. In this paper we propose a novel multi-index hashing method called Bag of Indexes (BoI) for Approximate Nearest Neighbors (ANN) search. It allows to drastically reduce the query time and outperforms the accura…

We analyze each modality independently, as well as the fusion of each for recognizing human emotion. This analysis includes which features are most important for specific emotions (e.g. happy). Our analysis indicates that both 3D facial landmarks and physiological data are encouraging for expression/…

The fundamental problem of visual place recognition is generating robust image representations which are not only insensitive to environmental changes but also distinguishable to different places. Taking advantage of the feature extraction ability of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), we further investigate how to localize discriminative visual landmarks that positively contribute to the similarity measurement, such as buildings and vegetations. In particular, a Landmark Localization Network (LLN) is designed to ind…
One of the key issues in facial expression recognition in the wild (FER-W) is that curating large-scale labeled facial images is challenging due to the inherent complexity and ambiguity of facial images. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a self-supervised simple facial landmark encoding (SimFLE) method that can learn effective encoding of facial landmarks, which are important features for improving the performance of FER-W, without expensive labels. Specifically, we introduce novel FaceMAE module for this purpose. FaceMAE reconstructs masked facial images with elaborately designed semantic …
This article presents an efficient end-to-end method to perform instance-level recognition employed to the task of labeling and ranking landmark images. In a first step, we embed images in a high dimensional feature space using convolutional neural networks trained with an additive angular margin loss and classify images using visual similarity. We then efficiently re-rank predictions and filter noise utilizing similarity to out-of-domain images. Using this approach we achieved the 1st place in the 2020 edition of the Google Landmark Recognition challenge.
The task of a visual landmark recognition system is to identify photographed buildings or objects in query photos and to provide the user with relevant information on them. With their increasing coverage of the world's landmark buildings and objects, Internet photo collections are now being used as a source for building such systems in a fully automatic fashion. This process typically consists of three steps: clustering large amounts of images by the objects they depict; determining object names from user-provided tags; and building a robust, compact, and efficient recognition index. To this d…

This paper presents a robust and dynamic face recognition technique based on the extraction and matching of devised probabilistic graphs drawn on SIFT features related to independent face areas. The face matching strategy is based on matching individual salient facial graph characterized by SIFT features as connected to facial landmarks such as the eyes and the mouth. In order to reduce the face matching errors, the Dempster-Shafer decision theory is applied to fuse the individual matching scores obtained from each pair of salient facial features. The proposed algorithm is evaluated with the O…

Two approaches are proposed for cross-pose face recognition, one is based on the 3D reconstruction of facial components and the other is based on the deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Unlike most 3D approaches that consider holistic faces, the proposed approach considers 3D facial components. It segments a 2D gallery face into components, reconstructs the 3D surface for each component, and recognizes a probe face by component features. The segmentation is based on the landmarks located by a hierarchical algorithm that combines the Faster R-CNN for face detection and the Reduced Tree Str…

Classification of human emotions remains an important and challenging task for many computer vision algorithms, especially in the era of humanoid robots which coexist with humans in their everyday life. Currently proposed methods for emotion recognition solve this task using multi-layered convolutional networks that do not explicitly infer any facial features in the classification phase. In this work, we postulate a fundamentally different approach to solve emotion recognition task that relies on incorporating facial landmarks as a part of the classification loss function. To that end, we exte…

The current state of the research in landmark recognition highlights the good accuracy which can be achieved by embedding techniques, such as Fisher vector and VLAD. All these techniques do not exploit spatial information, i.e. consider all the features and the corresponding descriptors without embedding their location in the image. This paper presents a new variant of the well-known VLAD (Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptors) embedding technique which accounts, at a certain degree, for the location of features. The driving motivation comes from the observation that, usually, the most inte…
Accurate face landmark localization is an essential part of face recognition, reconstruction and morphing. To accurately localize face landmarks, we present our heatmap regression approach. Each model consists of a MobileNetV2 backbone followed by several upscaling layers, with different tricks to optimize both performance and inference cost. We use five naïve face landmarks from a publicly available face detector to position and align the face instead of using the bounding box like traditional methods. Moreover, we show by adding random rotation, displacement and scaling -- after alignment --…
