The Google-Landmarks-v2 dataset is the biggest worldwide landmarks dataset characterized by a large magnitude of noisiness and diversity. We present a novel landmark retrieval/recognition system, robust to a noisy and diverse dataset, by our team, smlyaka. Our approach is based on deep convolutional neural networks with metric learning, trained by cosine-softmax based losses. Deep metric learning methods are usually sensitive to noise, and it could hinder to learn a reliable metric. To address this issue, we develop an automated data cleaning system. Besides, we devise a discriminative re-ranking method to address the diversity of the dataset for landmark retrieval. Using our methods, we achieved 1st place in the Google Landmark Retrieval 2019 challenge and 3rd place in the Google Landmark Recognition 2019 challenge on Kaggle.
While image retrieval and instance recognition techniques are progressing rapidly, there is a need for challenging datasets to accurately measure their performance -- while posing novel challenges that are relevant for practical applications. We introduce the Google Landmarks Dataset v2 (GLDv2), a new benchmark for large-scale, fine-grained instance recognition and image retrieval in the domain of human-made and natural landmarks. GLDv2 is the largest such dataset to date by a large margin, including over 5M images and 200k distinct instance labels. Its test set consists of 118k images with gr…
Retrieving object instances among cluttered scenes efficiently requires compact yet comprehensive regional image representations. Intuitively, object semantics can help build the index that focuses on the most relevant regions. However, due to the lack of bounding-box datasets for objects of interest among retrieval benchmarks, most recent work on regional representations has focused on either uniform or class-agnostic region selection. In this paper, we first fill the void by providing a new dataset of landmark bounding boxes, based on the Google Landmarks dataset, that includes $86k$ images …

Visual fashion analysis has attracted many attentions in the recent years. Previous work represented clothing regions by either bounding boxes or human joints. This work presents fashion landmark detection or fashion alignment, which is to predict the positions of functional key points defined on the fashion items, such as the corners of neckline, hemline, and cuff. To encourage future studies, we introduce a fashion landmark dataset with over 120K images, where each image is labeled with eight landmarks. With this dataset, we study fashion alignment by cascading multiple convolutional neural …

Clothing retrieval is a challenging problem in computer vision. With the advance of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), the accuracy of clothing retrieval has been significantly improved. FashionNet[1], a recent study, proposes to employ a set of artificial features in the form of landmarks for clothing retrieval, which are shown to be helpful for retrieval. However, the landmark detection module is trained with strong supervision which requires considerable efforts to obtain. In this paper, we propose a self-learning Visual Attention Model (VAM) to extract attention maps from clothing image…
We introduce a new landmark recognition dataset, which is created with a focus on fair worldwide representation. While previous work proposes to collect as many images as possible from web repositories, we instead argue that such approaches can lead to biased data. To create a more comprehensive and equitable dataset, we start by defining the fair relevance of a landmark to the world population. These relevances are estimated by combining anonymized Google Maps user contribution statistics with the contributors' demographic information. We present a stratification approach and analysis which l…

As an important upstream task for many medical applications, supervised landmark localization still requires non-negligible annotation costs to achieve desirable performance. Besides, due to cumbersome collection procedures, the limited size of medical landmark datasets impacts the effectiveness of large-scale self-supervised pre-training methods. To address these challenges, we propose a two-stage framework for one-shot medical landmark localization, which first infers landmarks by unsupervised registration from the labeled exemplar to unlabeled targets, and then utilizes these noisy pseudo l…
We present our solutions to the Google Landmark Challenges 2021, for both the retrieval and the recognition tracks. Both solutions are ensembles of transformers and ConvNet models based on Sub-center ArcFace with dynamic margins. Since the two tracks share the same training data, we used the same pipeline and training approach, but with different model selections for the ensemble and different post-processing. The key improvement over last year is newer state-of-the-art vision architectures, especially transformers which significantly outperform ConvNets for the retrieval task. We finished thi…

We introduce AmsterTime: a challenging dataset to benchmark visual place recognition (VPR) in presence of a severe domain shift. AmsterTime offers a collection of 2,500 well-curated images matching the same scene from a street view matched to historical archival image data from Amsterdam city. The image pairs capture the same place with different cameras, viewpoints, and appearances. Unlike existing benchmark datasets, AmsterTime is directly crowdsourced in a GIS navigation platform (Mapillary). We evaluate various baselines, including non-learning, supervised and self-supervised methods, pre-…
Given a query photo issued by a user (q-user), the landmark retrieval is to return a set of photos with their landmarks similar to those of the query, while the existing studies on the landmark retrieval focus on exploiting geometries of landmarks for similarity matches between candidate photos and a query photo. We observe that the same landmarks provided by different users over social media community may convey different geometry information depending on the viewpoints and/or angles, and may subsequently yield very different results. In fact, dealing with the landmarks with \illshapes caused…

We propose an efficient pipeline for large-scale landmark image retrieval that addresses the diversity of the dataset through two-stage discriminative re-ranking. Our approach is based on embedding the images in a feature-space using a convolutional neural network trained with a cosine softmax loss. Due to the variance of the images, which include extreme viewpoint changes such as having to retrieve images of the exterior of a landmark from images of the interior, this is very challenging for approaches based exclusively on visual similarity. Our proposed re-ranking approach improves the resul…
The landmark recognition problem is far from being solved, but with the use of features extracted from intermediate layers of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), excellent results have been obtained. In this work, we propose some improvements on the creation of R-MAC descriptors in order to make the newly-proposed R-MAC+ descriptors more representative than the previous ones. However, the main contribution of this paper is a novel retrieval technique, that exploits the fine representativeness of the MAC descriptors of the database images. Using this descriptors called "db regions" during the…
We present our solution to Landmark Image Retrieval Challenge 2019. This challenge was based on the large Google Landmarks Dataset V2[9]. The goal was to retrieve all database images containing the same landmark for every provided query image. Our solution is a combination of global and local models to form an initial KNN graph. We then use a novel extension of the recently proposed graph traversal method EGT [1] referred to as semi-supervised EGT to refine the graph and retrieve better candidates.
The problem of landmark recognition has achieved excellent results in small-scale datasets. When dealing with large-scale retrieval, issues that were irrelevant with small amount of data, quickly become fundamental for an efficient retrieval phase. In particular, computational time needs to be kept as low as possible, whilst the retrieval accuracy has to be preserved as much as possible. In this paper we propose a novel multi-index hashing method called Bag of Indexes (BoI) for Approximate Nearest Neighbors (ANN) search. It allows to drastically reduce the query time and outperforms the accura…
In this work, we present a method for landmark retrieval that utilizes global and local features. A Siamese network is used for global feature extraction and metric learning, which gives an initial ranking of the landmark search. We utilize the extracted feature maps from the Siamese architecture as local descriptors, the search results are then further refined using a cosine similarity between local descriptors. We conduct a deeper analysis of the Google Landmark Dataset, which is used for evaluation, and augment the dataset to handle various intra-class variances. Furthermore, we conduct sev…

Location retrieval based on visual information is to retrieve the location of an agent (e.g. human, robot) or the area they see by comparing the observations with a certain form of representation of the environment. Existing methods generally require precise measurement and storage of the observed environment features, which may not always be robust due to the change of season, viewpoint, occlusion, etc. They are also challenging to scale up and may not be applicable for humans due to the lack of measuring/imaging devices. Considering that humans often use less precise but easily produced qual…
In this paper, we show our solution to the Google Landmark Recognition 2021 Competition. Firstly, embeddings of images are extracted via various architectures (i.e. CNN-, Transformer- and hybrid-based), which are optimized by ArcFace loss. Then we apply an efficient pipeline to re-rank predictions by adjusting the retrieval score with classification logits and non-landmark distractors. Finally, the ensembled model scores 0.489 on the private leaderboard, achieving the 3rd place in the 2021 edition of the Google Landmark Recognition Competition.
We present an efficient end-to-end pipeline for largescale landmark recognition and retrieval. We show how to combine and enhance concepts from recent research in image retrieval and introduce two architectures especially suited for large-scale landmark identification. A model with deep orthogonal fusion of local and global features (DOLG) using an EfficientNet backbone as well as a novel Hybrid-Swin-Transformer is discussed and details how to train both architectures efficiently using a step-wise approach and a sub-center arcface loss with dynamic margins are provided. Furthermore, we elabora…
We propose an attentive local feature descriptor suitable for large-scale image retrieval, referred to as DELF (DEep Local Feature). The new feature is based on convolutional neural networks, which are trained only with image-level annotations on a landmark image dataset. To identify semantically useful local features for image retrieval, we also propose an attention mechanism for keypoint selection, which shares most network layers with the descriptor. This framework can be used for image retrieval as a drop-in replacement for other keypoint detectors and descriptors, enabling more accurate f…

In this paper, we describe our solution to the Google Landmark Recognition 2019 Challenge held on Kaggle. Due to the large number of classes, noisy data, imbalanced class sizes, and the presence of a significant amount of distractors in the test set, our method is based mainly on retrieval techniques with both global and local CNN approaches. Our full pipeline, after ensembling the models and applying several steps of re-ranking strategies, scores 0.37606 GAP on the private leaderboard which won the 1st place in the competition.

This paper presents U-LanD, a framework for joint detection of key frames and landmarks in videos. We tackle a specifically challenging problem, where training labels are noisy and highly sparse. U-LanD builds upon a pivotal observation: a deep Bayesian landmark detector solely trained on key video frames, has significantly lower predictive uncertainty on those frames vs. other frames in videos. We use this observation as an unsupervised signal to automatically recognize key frames on which we detect landmarks. As a test-bed for our framework, we use ultrasound imaging videos of the heart, whe…

With the increasing number of online stores, there is a pressing need for intelligent search systems to understand the item photos snapped by customers and search against large-scale product databases to find their desired items. However, it is challenging for conventional retrieval systems to match up the item photos captured by customers and the ones officially released by stores, especially for garment images. To bridge the customer- and store- provided garment photos, existing studies have been widely exploiting the clothing attributes (\textit{e.g.,} black) and landmarks (\textit{e.g.,} c…

The large variation of viewpoint and irrelevant content around the target always hinder accurate image retrieval and its subsequent tasks. In this paper, we investigate an extremely challenging task: given a ground-view image of a landmark, we aim to achieve cross-view geo-localization by searching out its corresponding satellite-view images. Specifically, the challenge comes from the gap between ground-view and satellite-view, which includes not only large viewpoint changes (some parts of the landmark may be invisible from front view to top view) but also highly irrelevant background (the tar…

The recent performance of facial landmark detection has been significantly improved by using deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), especially the Heatmap Regression Models (HRMs). Although their performance on common benchmark datasets has reached a high level, the robustness of these models still remains a challenging problem in the practical use under noisy conditions of realistic environments. Contrary to most existing work focusing on the design of new models, we argue that improving the robustness requires rethinking many other aspects, including the use of datasets, the format of la…

In this paper, we present a method for instance ranking and retrieval at fine-grained level based on the global features extracted from a multi-attribute recognition model which is not dependent on landmarks information or part-based annotations. Further, we make this architecture suitable for mobile-device application by adopting the bilinear CNN to make the multi-attribute recognition model smaller (in terms of the number of parameters). The experiments run on the Dress category of DeepFashion In-Shop Clothes Retrieval and CUB200 datasets show that the results of instance retrieval at fine-g…

Learning with noisy labels is an active research area for image classification. However, the effect of noisy labels on image retrieval has been less studied. In this work, we propose a noise-resistant method for image retrieval named Teacher-based Selection of Interactions, T-SINT, which identifies noisy interactions, ie. elements in the distance matrix, and selects correct positive and negative interactions to be considered in the retrieval loss by using a teacher-based training setup which contributes to the stability. As a result, it consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods on high…

Image retrieval under varying illumination conditions, such as day and night images, is addressed by image preprocessing, both hand-crafted and learned. Prior to extracting image descriptors by a convolutional neural network, images are photometrically normalised in order to reduce the descriptor sensitivity to illumination changes. We propose a learnable normalisation based on the U-Net architecture, which is trained on a combination of single-camera multi-exposure images and a newly constructed collection of similar views of landmarks during day and night. We experimentally show that both ha…
We introduce an unsupervised formulation to estimate heteroscedastic uncertainty in retrieval systems. We propose an extension to triplet loss that models data uncertainty for each input. Besides improving performance, our formulation models local noise in the embedding space. It quantifies input uncertainty and thus enhances interpretability of the system. This helps identify noisy observations in query and search databases. Evaluation on both image and video retrieval applications highlight the utility of our approach. We highlight our efficiency in modeling local noise using two real-world …

The Google Universal Image Embedding (GUIE) Challenge is one of the first competitions in multi-domain image representations in the wild, covering a wide distribution of objects: landmarks, artwork, food, etc. This is a fundamental computer vision problem with notable applications in image retrieval, search engines and e-commerce. We propose a novel approach for instance-level image retrieval. It produces a global and compact fixed-length representation for each image by aggregating many region-wise descriptors. In contrast to previous works employing pre-trained deep networks as a black box to produce features, our method leverages a deep architecture trained for the specific task of image retrieval. Our contribution is twofold: (i) we leverage a ranking framework to learn convolution and projection weights that are used to build the region features; and (ii) we employ a region proposal network to learn which regions s…

In this paper, we teach machines to understand visuals and natural language by learning the mapping between sentences and noisy video snippets without explicit annotations. Firstly, we define a self-supervised learning framework that captures the cross-modal information. A novel adversarial learning module is then introduced to explicitly handle the noises in the natural videos, where the subtitle sentences are not guaranteed to be strongly corresponded to the video snippets. For training and evaluation, we contribute a new dataset `ApartmenTour' that contains a large number of online videos a…
