In this paper, a genetic algorithm, one of the evolutionary algorithms optimization methods, is used for the first time for the problem of finding extremal binary self-dual codes. We present a comparison of the computational times between a genetic algorithm and a linear search for different size search spaces and show that the genetic algorithm is capable of finding binary self-dual codes significantly faster than the linear search. Moreover, by employing a known matrix construction together with the genetic algorithm, we are able to obtain new binary self-dual codes of lengths 68 and 72 in a significantly short time. In particular, we obtain 11 new extremal binary self-dual codes of length 68 and 17 new binary self-dual codes of length 72.
Evolvable hardware (EHW) is a set of techniques that are based on the idea of combining reconfiguration hardware systems with evolutionary algorithms. In other word, EHW has two sections; the reconfigurable hardware and evolutionary algorithm where the configurations are under the control of an evolutionary algorithm. This paper, suggests a method to design and optimize the synchronous sequential circuits. Genetic algorithm (GA) was applied as evolutionary algorithm. In this approach, for building input combinational logic circuit of each DFF, and also output combinational logic circuit, the c…
A new model for evolving Evolutionary Algorithms is proposed in this paper. The model is based on the Linear Genetic Programming (LGP) technique. Every LGP chromosome encodes an EA which is used for solving a particular problem. Several Evolutionary Algorithms for function optimization, the Traveling Salesman Problem, and the Quadratic Assignment Problem are evolved by using the considered model. Numerical experiments show that the evolved Evolutionary Algorithms perform similarly and sometimes even better than standard approaches for several well-known benchmarking problems.
This manuscript contains an outline of lectures course "Evolutionary Algorithms" read by the author. The course covers Canonic Genetic Algorithm and various other genetic algorithms as well as evolutionary strategies, genetic programming, tabu search and the class of evolutionary algorithms in general. Some facts, such as the Rotation Property of crossover, the Schemata Theorem, GA performance as a local search and "almost surely" convergence of evolutionary algorithms are given with complete proofs. The text is in Russian.
Explaining to what extent the real power of genetic algorithms lies in the ability of crossover to recombine individuals into higher quality solutions is an important problem in evolutionary computation. In this paper we show how the interplay between mutation and crossover can make genetic algorithms hillclimb faster than their mutation-only counterparts. We devise a Markov Chain framework that allows to rigorously prove an upper bound on the runtime of standard steady state genetic algorithms to hillclimb the OneMax function. The bound establishes that the steady-state genetic algorithms are…
For simple digital circuits, conventional method of designing circuits can easily be applied. But for complex digital circuits, the conventional method of designing circuits is not fruitfully applicable because it is time-consuming. On the contrary, Genetic Programming is used mostly for automatic program generation. The modern approach for designing Arithmetic circuits, commonly digital circuits, is based on Graphs. This graph-based evolutionary design of arithmetic circuits is a method of optimized designing of arithmetic circuits. In this paper, a new technique for evolutionary design of di…

Notwithstanding this, continuous on-line adaptation by the means of evolutionary algorithms is still under-explored, especially outside the evolutionary robotics domain. In this paper, we present an on-line evolutionary programming algorithm that searches in the agent design space for the appropriate behavioural policies to cope with the underlying environment. We discuss the current problems of continuous agent adaptation, present our on-line evolution testbed …
We demonstrate how a genetic algorithm solves the problem of minimizing the resources used for network coding, subject to a throughput constraint, in a multicast scenario. A genetic algorithm avoids the computational complexity that makes the problem NP-hard and, for our experiments, greatly improves on sub-optimal solutions of established methods. We compare two different genotype encodings, which tradeoff search space size with fitness landscape, as well as the associated genetic operators. Our finding favors a smaller encoding despite its fewer intermediate solutions and demonstrates the im…
Semantic diversity in Genetic Programming has proved to be highly beneficial in evolutionary search. We have witnessed a surge in the number of scientific works in the area, starting first in discrete spaces and moving then to continuous spaces. The vast majority of these works, however, have focused their attention on single-objective genetic programming paradigms, with a few exceptions focusing on Evolutionary Multi-objective Optimization (EMO). The latter works have used well-known robust algorithms, including the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II and the Strength Pareto Evolutiona…
This article considers application of genetic algorithms for finite machine synthesis. The resulting genetic finite state machines synthesis algorithm allows for creation of machines with less number of states and within shorter time. This makes it possible to use hardware-oriented genetic finite machines synthesis algorithm in autonomous systems on reconfigurable platforms.
Evolutionary multitasking has recently emerged as a novel paradigm that enables the similarities and/or latent complementarities (if present) between distinct optimization tasks to be exploited in an autonomous manner simply by solving them together with a unified solution representation scheme. An important matter underpinning future algorithmic advancements is to develop a better understanding of the driving force behind successful multitask problem-solving. In this regard, two (seemingly disparate) ideas have been put forward, namely, (a) implicit genetic transfer as the key ingredient faci…
Deep neural network learning can be formulated as a non-convex optimization problem. Existing optimization algorithms, e.g., Adam, can learn the models fast, but may get stuck in local optima easily. In this paper, we introduce a novel optimization algorithm, namely GADAM (Genetic-Evolutionary Adam). GADAM learns deep neural network models based on a number of unit models generations by generations: it trains the unit models with Adam, and evolves them to the new generations with genetic algorithm. We will show that GADAM can effectively jump out of the local optima in the learning process to …
This paper presents an analysis of building blocks propagation in Quantum-Inspired Genetic Algorithm, which belongs to a new class of metaheuristics drawing their inspiration from both biological evolution and unitary evolution of quantum systems. The expected number of quantum chromosomes matching a schema has been analyzed and a random variable corresponding to this issue has been introduced. The results have been compared with Simple Genetic Algorithm. Also, it has been presented how selected binary quantum chromosomes cover a domain of one-dimensional fitness function.

In this paper we introduce a novel adaptive metaheuristic algorithm to deal with Evolutionary Multitasking environments coined as Adaptive Transfer-guided Multifactorial Cellular Genetic Algorithm (AT-MFCGA). AT-MFCGA relies on cellular automata to implement mechanisms in o…

In recent years, optimization problems have become increasingly more prevalent due to the need for more powerful computational methods. With the more recent advent of technology such as artificial intelligence, new metaheuristics are needed that enhance the capabilities of classical algorithms. More recently, researchers have been looking at Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection and evolution as a means of enhancing current approaches using machine learning. In 1960, the first genetic algorithm was developed by John H. Holland and his student. We explore the mathematical intuition of th…
Target motion analysis using only bearing angles is an important study for tracking targets in water. Several methods including Kalman-like filters and evolutionary strategies are used to get a good predictor. Kalman-like filters couldn't get the expected results thus evolutionary strategies have been using in this area for a long time. Target Motion Analysis with Genetic Algorithm is the most successful method for Bearings-Only Target Motion Analysis and we investigated it. We found that Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolutionary Strategies does the similar work with Target Motion Analysis wit…
This paper presents a theory and an empirical evaluation of Higher-Order Quantum-Inspired Genetic Algorithms. Fundamental notions of the theory have been introduced, and a novel Order-2 Quantum-Inspired Genetic Algorithm (QIGA2) has been presented. Contrary to all QIGA algorithms which represent quantum genes as independent qubits, in higher-order QIGAs quantum registers are used to represent genes strings which allows modelling of genes relations using quantum phenomena. Performance comparison has been conducted on a benchmark of 20 deceptive combinatorial optimization problems. It has been p…
Despite many successful applications, Cartesian Genetic Programming (CGP) suffers from limited scalability, especially when used for evolutionary circuit design. Considering the multiplier design problem, for example, the 5x5-bit multiplier represents the most complex circuit evolved from a randomly generated initial population. The efficiency of CGP highly depends on the performance of the point mutation operator, however, this operator is purely stochastic. This contrasts with the recent developments in Genetic Programming (GP), where advanced informed approaches such as semantic-aware opera…
Most of the problems in genetic algorithms are very complex and demand a large amount of resources that current technology can not offer. Our purpose was to develop a Java-JINI distributed library that implements Genetic Algorithms with sub-populations (coarse grain) and a graphical interface in order to configure and follow the evolution of the search. The sub-populations are simulated/evaluated in personal computers connected trough a network, keeping in mind different models of sub-populations, migration policies and network topologies. We show that this model delays the convergence of the …
The Parameter-less Genetic Algorithm was first presented by Harik and Lobo in 1999 as an alternative to the usual trial-and-error method of finding, for each given problem, an acceptable set-up of the parameter values of the genetic algorithm. Since then, the same strategy has been successfully applied to create parameter-less versions of other population-based search algorithms such as the Extended Compact Genetic Algorithm and the Hierarchical Bayesian Optimization Algorithm. This report describes a Java implementation, Parameter-less Evolutionary Algorithm (P-EAJava), that integrates severa…
In practical optimisation the dominant characteristics of the problem are often not known prior. Therefore, there is a need to develop general solvers as it is not always possible to tailor a specialised approach to each application. The hybrid form of Multi-Level Selection Genetic Algorithm (MLSGA) already shows good performance on range of problems due to its diversity-first approach, which is rare among Evolutionary Algorithms. To increase the generality of its performance this paper proposes a distinct set of co-evolutionary mechanisms, which defines co-evolution as competition between col…
For various optimization methods, gradient descent-based algorithms can achieve outstanding performance and have been widely used in various tasks. Among those commonly used algorithms, ADAM owns many advantages such as fast convergence with both the momentum term and the adaptive learning rate. However, since the loss functions of most deep neural networks are non-convex, ADAM also shares the drawback of getting stuck in local optima easily. To resolve such a problem, the idea of combining genetic algorithm with base learners is introduced to rediscover the best solutions. Nonetheless, from o…
As two popular schools of machine learning, online learning and evolutionary computations have become two important driving forces behind real-world decision making engines for applications in biomedicine, economics, and engineering fields. Although there are prior work that utilizes bandits to improve evolutionary algorithms' optimization process, it remains a field of blank on how evolutionary approach can help improve the sequential decision making tasks of online learning agents such as the multi-armed bandits. In this work, we propose the Genetic Thompson Sampling, a bandit algorithm that…
In the context of Fifth Generation (5G) mobile networks, the concept of "Slice as a Service" (SlaaS) promotes mobile network operators to flexibly share infrastructures with mobile service providers and stakeholders. However, it also challenges with an emerging demand for efficient online algorithms to optimize the request-and-decision-based inter-slice resource management strategy. Based on genetic algorithms, this paper presents a novel online optimizer that efficiently approaches towards the ideal slicing strategy with maximized long-term network utility. The proposed method encodes slicing…
Bacteria have been a source of inspiration for the design of evolutionary algorithms. At the beginning of the 20th century synthetic biology was born, a discipline whose goal is the design of biological systems that do not exist in nature, for example, programmable synthetic bacteria. In this paper, we introduce as a novelty the designing of evolutionary algorithms where all the steps are conducted by synthetic bacteria. To this end, we designed a genetic algorithm, which we have named BAGA, illustrating its utility solving simple instances of optimization problems such as function optimizatio…
This paper characterizes the inherent power of evolutionary algorithms. This power depends on the computational properties of the genetic encoding. With some encodings, two parents recombined with a simple crossover operator can sample from an arbitrary distribution of child phenotypes. Such encodings are termed \emph{expressive encodings} in this paper. Universal function approximators, including popular evolutionary substrates of genetic programming and neural networks, can be used to construct expressive encodings. Remarkably, this approach need not be applied only to domains where the phen…
In this work, an evolving Linked Quantum register has been introduced, which are group vector of binary pair of genes, which in its local proximity represent those nodes that will have high connectivity and keep the energy consumption at low, and which are taken into account for topology control. The register works in higher dimension. Here order-2 Quantum inspired genetic algorithm has been used and also higher order can be used to achieve greater versatility in topology control of nodes. Numerical result has been obtained, analysis is done as how the result has previously been obtained with …
One of the main properties of biological systems is modularity, which manifests itself at all levels of their organization, starting with the level of molecular genetics, ending with the level of whole organisms and their communities. In a simplified form, these basic principles were transferred from the genetics of populations to the field of evolutionary computations, in order to solve applied optimization problems. Over almost half a century of development in this field of computer science, considerable practical experience has been gained and interesting theoretical results have been obtai…
Neoteny, also spelled Paedomorphosis, can be defined in biological terms as the retention by an organism of juvenile or even larval traits into later life. In some species, all morphological development is retarded; the organism is juvenilized but sexually mature. Such shifts of reproductive capability would appear to have adaptive significance to organisms that exhibit it. In terms of evolutionary theory, the process of paedomorphosis suggests that larval stages and developmental phases of existing organisms may give rise, under certain circumstances, to wholly new organisms. Although the pre…
The present work provides a new approach to evolve ligand structures which represent possible drug to be docked to the active site of the target protein. The structure is represented as a tree where each non-empty node represents a functional group. It is assumed that the active site configuration of the target protein is known with position of the essential residues. In this paper the interaction energy of the ligands with the protein target is minimized. Moreover, the size of the tree is difficult to obtain and it will be different for different active sites. To overcome the difficulty, a va…
A deductive program synthesis tool takes a specification as input and derives a program that satisfies the specification. The drawback of this approach is that search spaces for such correct programs tend to be enormous, making it difficult to derive correct programs within a realistic timeout. To speed up such program derivation, we improve the search strategy of a deductive program synthesis tool, SuSLik, using evolutionary computation. Our cross-validation shows that the improvement brought by evolutionary computation generalises to unforeseen problems.
Among the evolutionary methods, one that is quite prominent is Genetic Programming, and, in recent years, a variant called Geometric Semantic Genetic Programming (GSGP) has shown to be successfully applicable to many real-world problems. Due to a peculiarity in its implementation, GSGP needs to store all the evolutionary history, i.e., all populations from the first one. We exploit this stored information to define a multi-generational selection scheme that is able to use individuals from older populations. We show that a limited ability to use "old" generations is actually useful for the sear…
Here we propose an evolutionary algorithm that self modifies its operators at the same time that candidate solutions are evolved. This tackles convergence and lack of diversity issues, leading to better solutions. Operators are represented as trees and are evolved using genetic programming (GP) techniques. The proposed approach is tested with real benchmark functions and an analysis of operator evolution is provided.

Hundreds of Evolutionary Computation approaches have been reported. From an evolutionary perspective they focus on two fundamental mechanisms: cultural inheritance in Swarm Intelligence and genetic inheritance in Evolutionary Algorithms. Contemporary evolutionary biology looks beyond genetic inheritance, proposing a so-called ``Extended Evolutionary Synthesis''. Many concepts from the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis have been left out of Evolutionary Computation as interest has moved toward specific implementations of the same general mechanisms. One such concept is epigenetic inheritance, whi…

Given that the concept of evolution originates from biological systems, in this article, the evolution of network information architecture is analyzed by genetic algorithms, and the network information architecture is represented by chromosomes. Besides, the genetic algorithm is also applied to find the optimal chromosome in the architecture space. The evolutionary simulation is used to predict the optim…

Evolutionary deep learning is a recent hot topic that combines evolutionary computation with deep learning. However, most evolutionary deep learning methods focus on evolving architectures of neural networks, which sti…

We propose a variation of the standard genetic algorithm that incorporates social interaction between the individuals in the population. Our goal is to understand the evolutionary role of social systems and its possible application as a non-genetic new step in evolutionary algorithms. In biological populations, ie animals, even human beings and microorganisms, social interactions often affect the fitness of individuals. It is conceivable that the perturbation of the fitness via social interactions is an evolutionary strategy to avoid trapping into local optimum, thus avoiding a fast convergenc…
Genetic fitness optimization using small populations or small population updates across generations generally suffers from randomly diverging evolutions. We propose a notion of highly probable fitness optimization through feasible evolutionary computing runs on small size populations. Based on rapidly mixing Markov chains, the approach pertains to most types of evolutionary genetic algorithms, genetic programming and the like. We establish that for systems having associated rapidly mixing Markov chains and appropriate stationary distributions the new method finds optimal programs (individuals)…
Death has long been overlooked in evolutionary algorithms. Recent research has shown that death (when applied properly) can benefit the overall fitness of a population and can outperform sub-sections of a population that are "immortal" when allowed to evolve together in an environment [1]. In this paper, we strive to experimentally determine whether death is an adapted trait and whether this adaptation can be used to enhance our implementations of conventional genetic algorithms. Using some of the most widely accepted evolutionary death and aging theories, we observed that senescent death (in …
In this paper we analyze the cryptanalysis of the simplified data encryption standard algorithm using meta-heuristics and in particular genetic algorithms. The classic fitness function when using such an algorithm is to compare n-gram statistics of a the decrypted message with those of the target message. We show that using such a function is irrelevant in case of Genetic Algorithm, simply because there is no correlation between the distance to the real key (the optimum) and the value of the fitness, in other words, there is no hidden gradient. In order to emphasize this assumption we experime…
Neural architecture search (NAS) is a hot topic in the field of automated machine learning and outperforms humans in designing neural architectures on quite a few machine learning tasks. Motivated by the natural representation form of neural networks by the Cartesian genetic programming (CGP), we propose an evolutionary approach of NAS based on CGP, called CGPNAS, to solve sentence classification task. To evolve the architectures under the framework of CGP, the operations such as convolution are identified as the types of function nodes of CGP, and the evolutionary operations are designed base…
Genetic algorithms are modeled after the biological evolutionary processes that use natural selection to select the best species to survive. They are heuristics based and low cost to compute. Genetic algorithms use selection, crossover, and mutation to obtain a feasible solution to computational problems. In this paper, we describe our genetic optimization algorithms to a mission-critical and constraints-aware computation problem.
A hybrid evolutionary algorithm with importance sampling method is proposed for multi-dimensional optimization problems in this paper. In order to make use of the information provided in the search process, a set of visited solutions is selected to give scores for intervals in each dimension, and they are updated as algorithm proceeds. Those intervals with higher scores are regarded as good intervals, which are used to estimate the joint distribution of optimal solutions through an interaction between the pool of good genetics, which are the individuals with smaller fitness values. And the sam…

Evolutionary Computation is a group of biologically inspired algorithms used to solve complex optimisation problems. It can be split into Evolutionary Algorithms, which take inspiration from genetic inheritance, and Swarm Intelligence algorithms, that take inspiration from cultural inheritance. However, recent developments have focused on computational or mathematical adaptions, leaving their biological roots behind. This has left much of the modern evolutionary literature relatively unexplored. To understand which evolutionary mechanisms have been considered, and which have been overlooked, t…

In this article we provide a comprehensive review of the different evolutionary algorithm techniques used to address multimodal optimization problems, classifying them according to the nature of their approach. On the one hand there are algorithms that address the issue of the early convergence to a local optimum by differentiating the individuals of the population into groups and limiting their interaction, hence having each group evolve with a high degree of independence. On the other hand other approaches are based on directly addressing the lack of genetic diversity of the population by in…
The study of semantics in Genetic Program (GP) deals with the behaviour of a program given a set of inputs and has been widely reported in helping to promote diversity in GP for a range of complex problems ultimately improving evolutionary search. The vast majority of these studies have focused their attention in single-objective GP, with just a few exceptions where Pareto-based dominance algorithms such as NSGA-II and SPEA2 have been used as frameworks to test whether highly popular semantics-based methods, such as Semantic Similarity-based Crossover (SSC), helps or hinders evolutionary searc…
This paper presents our computational methodology using Genetic Algorithms (GA) for exploring the nature of RNA editing. We have expanded the traditional Genetic Algorithm with artificial editing mechanisms as proposed by (Rocha, 1997). The incorporation of editing mechanisms provides a means for artificial agents with genetic descriptions to gain greater phenotypic plasticity, which may be environmentally regulated. Our first implementations…
This research proposes the econophysics kinetic market model as an evolutionary algorithm's instance. The immediate results from this proposal is a new replacement rule for family competition genetic algorithms. It also represents a starting point to adding evolvable entities to kinetic market models.
Genetic programming (GP) is an evolutionary computation technique to solve problems in an automated, domain-independent way. Rather than identifying the optimum of a function as in more traditional evolutionary optimization, the aim of GP is to evolve computer programs with a given functionality. While many GP applications have produced human competitive results, the theoretical understanding of what problem characteristics and algorithm properties allow GP to be effective is comparatively limited. Compared with traditional evolutionary algorithms for function optimization, GP applications are…
