In this publication we continue our previous work on extending the angular scan range of phased arrays using metasurfaces. We consider in detail scan enhancement using a single metasurface lens in the near-field of a source and provide analytical expressions for source excitation to obtain a desired beam. We show that such a device suffers from the same directivity degradation as in the case of far-field lens placement. Moreover, we discuss in detail that this approach has limitations, and one cannot place the lens arbitrarily close to the source array. We then propose a two-lens near-field scan enhancer which is not subject to the same limitations, although still subject to the same directivity degradation. Finally we propose a binary metasurface concept which theoretically achieves desired scan enhancement without directivity degradation. Some theoretical claims are then verified via full-field simulations.
In this paper, we present the design procedure of modulated metasurface leaky-wave antennas (MMLWAs) to generate coaxial superposition of vortex beams with several orbital angular momentum (OAM) states. Based on the Flat Optics (FO) technique and aperture field estimation (AFE) method, an analytical framework is proposed to facilitate the implementation of MMLWAs generating multiple topological charges in the OAM regimen. Furthermore, using the spectral analysis which has been derived from the proposed model, we have shown that the symmetry of aperture shape can affect the purity of the mode. …
The success of semiconductor electronics is built on the creation of compact, low-power switching elements that offer routing, logic, and memory functions. The availability of nanoscale optical switches could have a similarly transformative impact on the development of dynamic and programmable metasurfaces, optical neural networks, and quantum information processing. Phase change materials are uniquely suited to enable their creation as they offer high-speed electrical switching between amorphous and crystalline states with notably different optical properties. Their high refractive index has …
Spectral imagers, the classic example being the color camera, are ubiquitous in everyday life. However, most such imagers rely on filter arrays that absorb light outside each spectral channel, yielding ~1/N efficiency for an N-channel imager. This is especially undesirable in thermal infrared (IR) wavelengths, where sensor detectivities are low, as well as in highly compact systems with small entrance pupils. Diffractive optics or interferometers can enable efficient spectral imagers, but such systems are too bulky for certain applications. We propose an efficient and compact thermal infrared …
We demonstrate a 3D printed holographic metasurface antenna for beam-focusing applications at 10 GHz within the X-band frequency regime. The metasurface antenna is printed using a dual-material 3D printer leveraging a biodegradable conductive polymer material (Electrifi) to print the conductive parts and polylactic acid (PLA) to print the dielectric substrate. The entire metasurface antenna is 3D printed at once; no additional techniques, such as metal-plating and laser etching, are required. It is demonstrated that using the 3D printed conductive polymer metasurface antenna, high-fidelity bea…
Mobile devices, climate science, and autonomous vehicles all require advanced microwave antennas for imaging, radar, and wireless communications. The cost, size, and power consumption of existing technology, however, has hindered the ubiquity of electronically steered systems. Here, we propose a metasurface antenna design paradigm that enables electronic beamsteering from a passive lightweight circuit board with varactor-tuned elements. Distinct from previous metasurfaces (which require dense element spacing), the proposed design uses Nyquist spatial sampling of half a wavelength. We detail th…
This paper presents an end-to-end design method for the synthesis of dielectric metasurfaces with modulated thickness that are able to realize desired radiation patterns in the far-field with high precision. The method relies on integral equations and the Method of Moments to calculate the induced surface and volumetric current densities throughout the metasurface upon a given incident illumination. By avoiding homogenization of the dielectric layer and calculating directly the scattered fields through the Method of Moments, the near-field and far-field response of the metasurface can be accur…
Metasurface antenna arrays, formed by tiling multiple metasurface subapertures, offer an alternative architecture to electrically large beamsteering arrays often used in radar and communications. The advantages offered by metasurfaces are enabled by the use of passive, tunable radiating elements. While these metamaterial elements do not exhibit the full range of phase tuning as can be obtained with phase shifters, they can be engineered to provide a similar level of performance with much lower power requirements and circuit complexity. Due to the limited phase and magnitude control, however, l…
In this paper, a low radar cross section (RCS) patch antenna based on the 3-bit metasurface composed of linear polarization conversion elements is designed. At first, 3-bit coding metamaterials are constructed by a sequence of eight coded unit cells, which have a similar cross-polarized reflected amplitude response and gradient reflected phase responses covering 0~2π, respectively. Equivalent circuit models (ECMs) of these unit cells are created to describe their electrical behavior for the two linear incident polarizations at the same time. Then, a patch antenna is integrated on the 3-bit met…
The fusion of metasurface antennas and computational imaging facilitates the design of microwave imaging systems which require no lenses, phase shifters or moving parts. The technique involves the generation of appropriately designed diverse measurement modes to encode the scene information into a small number of measurements. We propose a novel boundary-tunable parallel plate waveguide-based metasurface antenna for computational microwave imaging. The proposed antenna leverages a switchable boundary of two layers of vias, to efficiently change the waveguide modes supported by the antenna cavi…

The metasurface antenna consists of an array of metamaterial elements distributed over an electrically large structure, each subwavelength in dimension and with subwavelength separation between elements. In the antenna configuration we consider here, the metasurface is excited by the fields from an attached waveguide. Each metamaterial element can b…
We propose an uplink massive MIMO system using an array of holographic metasurfaces as a sector antenna. The antenna consists of a set of rectangular waveguide-fed metasurfaces combined along the elevation direction into a planar aperture, each with subwavelength-sized metamaterial elements as radiators. The metamaterial radiators are designed such that the waveguide-fed metasurface implements a holographic solution for the guided (or reference) mode, generating a fan beam towards a prescribed direction, thereby forming a multibeam antenna system. We demonstrate that a narrowband uplink massiv…
The aim of this communication is to investigate and demonstrate the possibility to overcome the fundamental limitations of mantle cloaking for antennas by exploiting nonlinear metasurfaces. First, we recap and give additional physical insights about the fundamental bounds that apply to the electric properties of an antenna that is made invisible at its own resonance frequency. Then, an innovative strategy is proposed to circumvent these limits through the introduction of nonlinear elements that are able to dynamically transform the geometry of the cloaking metasurface depending on the power le…
Over the past decades, many radome designs to extend the angular scan range of phased-array antennas have been devised by utilizing dielectric materials and metamaterials. More recently, metasurface technology such as planar lenses and beam deflectors have been applied to phased arrays, enabling scan-angle enhancers to have a low profile. In this work, a physical Huygens' metasurface (HMS) two-lens system for scanangle doubling of a phased array is presented. For the HMS unit cells, the wire-loop topology is deployed to achieve high transmission for the required phase-angle shift. The proposed…

It is now widely recognized that metasurfaces represent a chip-scale nanophotonics array technology capable of comprehensively controlling the wavefront of light via appropriately configuring subwavelength antenna elements. Here, we demonstrate a reconfigurable metasurface that is universal, i.e., notionally capable of providing diverse optical functions in the telecommunication wavelength regime, using a compact, lightweight, electronically-controlled array with no moving parts. By electro-opti…

By engineering the photo response of the Nb nano-device arrays, we observe a maximum extinction A(lambda)= 1- R(lambda}) = 95 % at resonan…
Nanophotonic chiral antennas exhibit orders of magnitude higher circular dichroism (CD) compared to molecular systems. Merging magnetism and structural chirality at the nanometric level allows for the efficient magnetic control of the dichroic response, bringing exciting new prospects to active nanophotonic devices and magnetochirality. Here we devise macroscale enantiomeric magnetophotonic metasurfaces of plasmon and ferromagnetic spiral antennas. Mixed 2D- and 3D- chiral nanoantennas induce large CD response, where we identify reciprocal and non-reciprocal contributions. The simultaneous chi…
A simple method of superimposing multiple near field scans using a single horn antenna in different configurations to characterize a planar electromagnetic metasurface is proposed and numerically demonstrated. It can be used to construct incident fields for which the metasurface is originally designed for, which may otherwise be difficult or not possible to achieve in practice. While this method involves additional effort by requiring multiple scans, it also provides flexibility for the incident field to be generated, simply by changing the objective of a numerical optimization which is used t…
A circularly polarized leaky-wave antenna capable of frequency scanning is proposed in this paper. The main objective is to achieve high gain and polarization purity without the need for a complex feed network. The antenna consists of two independent modules: (1) Anisotropic modulated metasurface antenna (MoMetA) for generating vertically polarized radiation with an operational scanning range of 19 to 47 degrees in elevation; (2) Wide-band polarization converter with high angular stability and capable of converting vertically linear polarization into circular polarization (CP). Varifocal lenses, conventionally implemented by changing the axial distance between multiple optical elements, have a wide range of applications in imaging and optical beam scanning. The use of conventional bulky refractive elements makes these varifocal lenses large, slow, and limits their tunability. Metasurfaces, a new category of lithographically defined diffractive devices, enable thin and lightweight optical elements with precisely engineered phase profiles. Here, we demonstrate tunable metasurface doublets, based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), with more than 60 diopters (abou…
Antenna technology is at the basis of ubiquitous wireless communication systems and sensors. Radiation is typically sustained by conduction currents flowing around resonant metallic objects that are optimized to enhance efficiency and bandwidth. However, resonant conductors are prone to large scattering of impinging waves, leading to challenges in crowded antenna environments due to blockage and distortion. Metasurface cloaks have been explored in the quest of addressing this challenge by reducing antenna scattering, but with limited performance in terms of bandwidth, footprint and overall sca…
In this paper, a novel concept of a leaky-wave antenna is proposed, based on the use of Huygens' metasurfaces. It consists of a parallel-plate waveguide in which the top plate is replaced by a bianisotropic metasurface of the Omega type. It is shown that there is an exact solution to transform the guided mode into a leaky-mode with arbitrary control of the constant leakage factor and the pointing direction. Although the solution turns out to be periodic, only one Floquet mode is excited and radiates, even for electrically long periods. Thanks to the intrinsic spurious Floquet mode suppression,…
Recent metasurface developments have led to their consideration for extending the angular scan range of phased arrays. This paper considers the use of Huygens' metasurfaces as lenses to accomplish the task. Ray optics is used to uncover how a single lens can extend the scan range. It is shown that a single scan extending lens leads to a broadside directivity degradation of the original beam. This directivity degradation is quantitatively characterized as a function of the desired angular scan-range expansion. A method of simulating phase boundaries is presented and used to verify the theoretic…

The smartphone, as a media device, should offer a large-size screen and fast data rates in a well-packed device. Emergent 5G technologies based on millimeter waves need efficiently radiating antennas integrated into devices whose bodies (especially glass screens) behave as waveguides in the antenna frequency bands. Using the concept of retroreflective surfaces, this work proposes a compact metasurface located below the smartphone glass screen which reduces surface-wave excitation and propagation, and significantly improves the radiation pattern and efficiency of millimeter-wave antennas integr…
In this paper, we demonstrate a radiation-strength-chirped metasurface centimeter-long grating antenna, whose beam quality is approaching the diffraction limit in its footprint with 90 percent efficiency.Instead of chirping the duty cycle to tune radiation strength, which calls for non-scalable fabrication resolution, we design a 2D fish-bone surface grating with apodized width of the bone. The meta surface is made by silicon nitride on top of silicon waveguide to weakly perturb the mode. Moreover, a Monte Carlo Markov Chain(MCMC) algorithm is implemented to design the radiation strength profil…
We present the design of a phased, modulated, power distribution network for metasurface array antennas. The specific metasurface array design comprises a series of waveguides, each feeding a sub-array of dynamically tunable metamaterial elements that radiate at microwave (X-band) frequencies. To remain a one-port device, the composite array requires a power divider that can excite each branch waveguide with equal power. Further, the power divider must also apply a prescribed phase shift to each branch waveguide to mitigate metasurface-specific grating lobes. The presented design features holl…
We consider the design and modeling of metasurfaces that couple energy from guided waves to propagating wavefronts. This is a first step towards a comprehensive, multiscale modeling platform for metasurface antennas-large arrays of metamaterial elements embedded in a waveguide structure that radiates into free-space--in which the detailed electromagnetic responses of metamaterial elements are replaced by polarizable dipoles. We present two methods to extract the effective polarizability of a metamaterial element embedded in a one- or two-dimensional waveguide. The first method invokes surface …
We present the end-to-end design of compact passive and lossless metasurface (MTS) antennas with integrated feeds. The complete low-profile system consists of a single-layered reactive impedance MTS printed on top of a grounded dielectric substrate, and is fed by sources which are embedded inside the substrate. An accurate and efficient volume-surface integral equation-based model of the device is developed, and used as the basis for the rapid optimization of its performance. The optimized designs leverage tailored auxiliary surface waves supported by the impedance MTS to distribute the locali…

The synthesized metasurfaces consist of a patterned metallic cladding supported by a finite-size grounded dielectric substrate. The metasurfaces are modeled using integral equations which accurately account for mutual coupling and the metasurface's finite dimensions. The synthesis technique consists of three phases: a direct solve phase to obtain an initial metasurface design with complex-valued impedances satisfying th…
We introduce a metasurface-based system for the microwave hyperthermia treatment of brain tumors, where the metasurface is designed by the time-reversal technique for optimal focusing at the location of the tumor. Compared to previous time-reversal microwave hyperthermia systems, which are based on antenna arrays, the proposed system offers two advantages: 1) it provides superior focal resolution, due to the finer sampling capability of its deeply-subwavelength metasurface particles compared to that of typical array antenna elements, 2) it features much lower complexity and cost, due to its di…

In the recent years, metasurfaces, being flat and lightweight, have been designed to replace bulky optical components with various functions. We demonstrate a monolithic Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) integrated with a metasurface-based flat lens that focuses light in the mid-infrared spectrum. A two-dimensional scanning MEMS platform controls the angle of the lens along the two orthogonal axes (tip-tilt) by +-9 degrees, thus enabling dynamic beam steering. The device can compensate for off-axis incident light and thus correct for aberrations such as coma. We show that for low angular …
We show that the use of the electromagnetic inverse source framework offers great flexibility in the design of metasurfaces. In particular, this approach is advantageous for antenna design applications where the goal is often to satisfy a set of performance criteria such as half power beamwidths and null directions, rather than satisfying a fully-known complex field. In addition, the inverse source formulation allows the metasurface and the region over which the desired field specifications are provided to be of arbitrary shape. Some of the main challenges in solving this inverse source proble…
