Analog computing has emerged as a promising candidate for real-time and parallel continuous data processing. This paper presents a reciprocal way for realizing asymmetric optical transfer functions (OTFs) in the reflection side of the on-axis processing channels. It is rigorously demonstrated that the presence of Cross-polarization Exciting Normal Polarizabilities (CPENP) of a reciprocal metasurface circumvents the famous challenge of Green's function approach in implementation of on-axis reflective optical signal processing while providing dual computing channels under orthogonal polarizations. Following a comprehensive theoretical discussion and as a proof of concept, an all-dielectric optical metasurface is elaborately designed to exhibit the desired surface polarizabilities, thereby reflecting the first derivative and extracting the edges of images impinging from normal direction. The proposed study offers a flexible design method for on-axis metasurface-based optical signal processing and also, dramatically facilitates the experimental setup required for ultrafast analog computation and image processing.
We present the concept of a magnetless Reflective Gyrotropic Spatial Isolator (RGSI) metasurface. This is a birefringent metasurface that reflects vertically polarized incident waves into a horizontally polarized waves, and absorbs horizontally polarized incident waves, hence providing isolation between the two orthogonal polarization. We first synthesize the metasurface using surface susceptibility-based Generalized Sheet Transition Conditions~(GSTCs). We then propose a mirror-backed metaparticle implementation of this metasurface, where transistor-loaded resonators provide the desired magnet…
Nonreciprocal radiation refers to electromagnetic wave radiation in which a structure provides different responses under the change of the direction of the incident field. Modern wireless telecommunication systems demand versatile apparatuses which are capable of full-duplex nonreciprocal wave processing and amplification, especially in the reflective state. To realize such a unique, extraordinary and versatile functionality, we propose an architecture in which a chain of series cascaded radiating patches are integrated with nonreciprocal phase shifters, providing an original and efficient app…
A new configuration for metasurface construction is presented to achieve multi-functional capabilities including perfect absorption, bio/chem sensing, and surface-mode lasing. The reciprocal plasmonic metasurfaces discussed here are composed of two plasmonic surfaces of reciprocal geometries separated by a dielectric spacer. Compared to conventional metasurfaces this simple geometry exhibits an enhanced optical performance. The discussed reciprocal metasurface design further enables effective structural optimization and allows for a simple and scalable fabrication. The physical principle and p…
We discuss different applications and potentials of reciprocal bianisotropic metasurfaces including uniform and gradient metasurfaces, in particular, with anisotropic, chiral, and omega properties. Based on an analytic analysis, we discuss the necessary conditions to observe asymmetric co- and cross- polarization reflection and/or transmission, polarization conversion and rotation, asymmetric absorption, etc. We consider two kinds of incident wave scenarios based on linear and circular polarization.
In this letter, we propose a magnet-less non-reciprocal isolating system based on time-varying metasurfaces. Two parallel time-varying metasurfaces, one for frequency up-conversion and one for down-conversion by the same amount, are used for realizing a region of space where incident waves from opposite directions experience an opposite Doppler frequency shift. As a result, any device within this region becomes sensitive to the illumination direction, exhibiting a different scattering response from opposite directions and thus breaking reciprocity. Very importantly, thanks to the opposite freq…
While metasurfaces (MSs) are constructed from deeply-subwavelength unit cells, they are generally electrically large and full-wave simulations of the complete structure are computationally expensive. Thus, to reduce this high computational cost, non-uniform MSs can be modelled as zero-thickness boundaries, with sheets of electric and magnetic polarizations related to the fields by surface susceptibilities and the generalized sheet transition conditions (GSTCs). While these two-sided boundary conditions have been extensively studied for single sheets of resonant particles, it has not been shown…
A metallic ring based, diode-integrated, low-profile, power-dependent, reflective metasurface working from 3 GHz to 3.6 GHz is proposed in this letter. Unlike the previous study which shifts a band up and down to change the impedance of the surface, the triggering of the diodes directly transforms the structure from a surface wave supportive state to a self-induced bandgap topology if exposed to high power RF illumination. We demonstrate the concept by conducting the EM-circuit co-simulation and measurements for a 6 by 8 unit 2D prototype. Near field scan experiments verify that the proposed t…
Motivated by the recent renewed interest in compact analog computing using light and metasurfaces (Silva, A. et al., Science 2014, 343, 160-163), we suggest a practical approach to its realization that involves reflective metasurfaces consisting of arrayed gold nanobricks atop a subwavelength-thin dielectric spacer and optically-thick gold film, a configuration that supports gap-surface plasmon resonances. Using well established numerical routines, we demonstrate that these metasurfaces enable independent control of the light phase and amplitude, and design differentiator and integrator metasu…
This letter addresses the synthesis of reflective cells approaching a given desired Floquet's scattering matrix. This work is motivated by the need to obtain much finer control of reflective metasurfaces by controlling not only their co-polarized reflection but also their cross-coupling behavior. The demonstrated capability will enable more powerful design approaches -involving all field components in phase and magnitude- and consequently better performance in applications involving reflective metasurfaces. We first expose some fundamental theoretical constraints on the cell scattering paramet…
All-dielectric optical metasurfaces can locally control the amplitude and phase of light at the nanoscale, enabling arbitrary wavefront shaping. However, lack of post-fabrication tunability has limited the true potential of metasurfaces for many applications. Here, we utilize a thin liquid crystal (LC) layer as a tunable medium surrounding the metasurface to achieve a phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) with high reflection in the visible frequency, exhibiting an active and continuous resonance tuning with associated 2pi phase control and uncoupled amplitude. Dynamic wavefront shaping is …
Omega bianisotropic metasurfaces (OBMS) provide wave-control capabilities not previously available with Huygens' metasurfaces (HMS). These enhanced capabilities derive from the additional degree of freedom provided by OBMS, and are based on analyses of zero-thickness surfaces with abstract surface impedance properties. However, the design of practical metasurfaces has proven tedious. Herein, we propose a novel, easily designed structure to realize OBMSs. Extending our previous work, we show that an asymmetrical cascade of two judiciously engineered Fabry-Perot (FP) etalons could form an OBMS m…
Hyperuniform geometries feature correlated disordered topologies which follow from a tailored k-space design. Here we study gold plasmonic hyperuniform metasurfaces and we report evidence of the effectiveness of k-space engineering on both light scattering and light emission experiments. The metasurfaces possess interesting directional emission properties which are revealed by momentum spectroscopy as diffraction and fluorescence emission rings at size-specific k-vectors. The opening of these rotational-symmetric patterns scales with the hyperuniform correlation length parameter as predicted v…
Electromagnetic linear-to-circular polarization converters with wide- and multi-band capabilities can simplify antenna systems where circular polarization is required. Multi-band solutions are attractive in satellite communication systems, which commonly have the additional requirement that the sense of polarization is reversed {between adjacent bands}. However, the design of these structures using conventional \textit{ad hoc} methods relies heavily on empirical methods. Here, we employ a data-driven approach integrated with a generative adversarial network to explore the design space of the p…
Hyperbolic propagation offers exciting opportunities in nanophotonics, from sub-diffraction imaging to enhanced local density of states. This transport regime is typically induced by strong modulation of conductivity, i.e., with alternating metallic and dielectric material properties. Here, we analyze a moving impedance surface, showing that suitably tailored homogeneous metasurfaces can support one-way hyperbolic propagation when in motion, adding non-reciprocity to hyperbolic propagation phenomena, and without suffering from nonlocal effects stemming from discretization or finite granularity…
Metasurfaces possess vast wave-manipulation capabilities, including reflection and refraction of a plane wave into non-standard directions. This requires meticulously-designed sub-wavelength meta-atoms in each period of the metasurface which guarantee unitary coupling to the desired Floquet-Bloch mode or, equivalently, suppression of the coupling to other modes. Herein, we propose an entirely different scheme to achieve such suppression, alleviating the need to devise and realize such dense scrupulously-engineered polarizable particles. Extending the concept of anti-reflective coatings to enab…
Curved reflective mirrors play an indispensable role in widely-employed Cassegrain-type optics, which consequently are inevitably bulky, and thus neither integratable nor well extendable. Through substituting geometric phase based reflective metasurfaces for curved mirrors, here a planar Cassegrain-type Schwarzschild objective is obtained, with both the focusing and imaging functionalities experimentally verified. The planar reflective objective achieved is intrinsically free of residual light and thus imposes less stringent restrictions on illuminating light and nanofabrications compared to i…
This paper aims at studying the angular scattering properties of bianisotropic metasurfaces and at clarifying the different roles played by tangential and normal polarization densities. Different types of metasurfaces are considered for this study and are classified according to their symmetrical/asymmetrical and reciprocal/nonreciprocal angular scattering behavior. Finally, the paper presents the relationships between the symmetrical angular scattering properties of reciprocal metasurfaces and the structural symmetries of their scattering particles. This may prove to be practically useful for…
Static metasurfaces have shown to be prominent compact structures for reciprocal and frequency-invariant transformation of electromagnetic waves in space. However, incorporating temporal variation to static metasurfaces would result in dynamic apparatuses which are capable of four-dimensional tailoring of both the spatial and temporal characteristics of electromagnetic waves, leading to functionalities that are far beyond the capabilities of conventional static metasurfaces. This includes nonreciprocal full-duplex wave transmission, pure frequency conversion, parametric wave amplification, spa…
In recent years a significant progress has been made in the development of magnet-less nonreciprocity using space-time modulation, both in electromagnetics and acoustics. This approach has so far resulted in a plethora of non-reciprocal devices, such as isolators and circulators, over different parts of the spectrum, for guided waves. On the other hand, very little work has been performed on non-reciprocal devices for waves propagating in free space, which can also have many practical applications. For example, it was shown theoretically that non-reciprocal scattering by a metasurface can be o…

An efficient reflective elastic metasurface with tunable focusing point is proposed. The metasurface is based on electric resonators embedded in a stretchable elastic substrate. The focal length is controlled by mean of the stretching applied applied to the sample. The results predicted by theory and numerical simulations are experimentally verified. Our proposal shows that smart engineering elastic metamaterials are an effective platform for new functional devices based on metamaterials.
Metasurfaces characterized by a transverse gradient of local impedance have recently opened exciting directions for light manipulation at the nanoscale. Here we add a temporal gradient to the picture, showing that spatio-temporal variations over a surface may largely extend the degree of light manipulation in metasurfaces, and break several of their constraints associated to symmetries. As an example, we synthesize a non-reciprocal classical analogue to electromagnetic induced transparency, opening a narrow window of one-way transmission in an otherwise opaque surface. These properties pave th…
Recent advances in optical metasurfaces enable control of the wavefront, polarization and dispersion of optical waves beyond the capabilities of conventional diffractive optics. An optical design space that is poised to highly benefit from these developments is the folded optics architecture where light is confined between reflective surfaces and the wavefront is controlled at the reflective interfaces. In this manuscript we introduce the concept of folded metasurface optics by demonstrating a compact high resolution optical spectrometer made from a 1-mm-thick glass slab with a volume of 7 cub…
The angular response of thin diffractive optical elements is highly correlated. For example, the angles of incidence and diffraction of a grating are locked through the grating momentum determined by the grating period. Other diffractive devices, including conventional metasurfaces, have a similar angular behavior due to the fixed locations of the Fresnel zone boundaries and the weak angular sensitivity of the meta-atoms. To alter this fundamental property, we introduce angle-multiplexed metasurfaces, composed of reflective high-contrast dielectric U-shaped meta-atoms, whose response under ill…
We present a concept of a mirror for the application in high-reflectivity low-noise instruments such as interferometers. The concept is based on an etalon with a metasurface (meta-etalon) on the front and a conventional multilayer stack on the rear surface. The etalon in combination with the metasurface enables a dedicated spatial weighing of the relevant thermal noise processes and by this a substantial reduction of the overall read out thermal noise. We exemplary illustrate the benefit of the proposed etalon for thermal noise in two applications: The test masses of the Einstein Telescope gra…
In the wake of intense research on metamaterials the two-dimensional analogue, known as metasurfaces, has attracted progressively increasing attention in recent years due to the ease of fabrication and smaller insertion losses, while enabling an unprecedented control over spatial distributions of transmitted and reflected optical fields. Metasurfaces represent optically thin planar arrays of resonant subwavelength elements that can be arranged in a strictly or quasi periodic fashion, or even in an aperiodic manner, depending on targeted optical wavefronts to be molded with their help. This pap…
Subwavelength planar structured interfaces, also known as metasurfaces, are ultra-thin optical elements modulating the amplitude, phase, and polarization of incident light using nanostructures called meta-atoms. The optical properties of such metasurfaces can be controlled across wavelengths by selecting geometries and materials of the meta-atoms. Given recent technological developments in optical device miniaturization, components for beam splitting and beam combining are sought for use within these devices as two quintessential components of every optical setup. However, realizing such devic…
This paper theoretically proposes a multichannel functional metasurface computer characterized by Generalized Sheet Transition Conditions (GSTCs) and surface susceptibility tensors. The study explores a polarization- and angle-multiplexed metasurfaces enabling multiple and independent parallel analog spatial computations when illuminated by differently polarized incident beams from different directions. The proposed synthesis overcomes substantial restrictions imposed by previous designs such as large architectures arising from the need of additional subblocks, slow responses, and most importa…
