Following from our recent work, we present here a detailed structural analysis of a representative sample of nearby spiral and early-type galaxies taken from the KINGFISH/ SINGS survey. The photometric parameters of bulges are obtained from bulge-disc decompositions using GALFIT data analysis algorithm. The method and corrections for projection and dust effects previously obtained are used to derive intrinsic photometric and structural bulge parameters. We show the main bulge scaling relations and the black hole relations, both observed and intrinsic ones, in B band. We find dust and inclination effects to produce more important changes in the parameters of the Kormendy relation for spiral galaxies, with the respective bulges of late-type galaxies residing on a steeper slope relation that the early-type galaxies. We observe that the Kormendy relation in combination with a bulge Sérsic index ($n_{b}$) threshold, does not produce a conclusive morphological separation of bulges. The $n_{b}$- bulge-to-total flux ratio ($B/T$) and $B/T$-stellar mass could be used to discriminate between late-type and early-type galaxies, while a further use of these parameters to divide bulges with different morphologies is problematic due to overlaps in the two distributions or large spread in values. We confirm the existence of two distinct intrinsic relations between the bulge luminosity (or absolute magnitude) and Sérsic index for late- and early-type galaxies, while the relations between the black-hole mass ($M_{BH}$) and bulge luminosity are not found to be statistically different at p<0.05. Within errors, we find statistically similar intrinsic $M_{BH}-n_{b}$ relations for all bulges.
The Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) paradigm of galaxy formation predicts that dense spheroidal stellar structures invariably grow at early cosmic time. These primordial spheroids evolve toward a virialized dynamical status as they finally become today's elliptical galaxies and large bulges at the center of disk galaxies. However, observations reveal that small bulges in spiral galaxies are common in the nearby universe. The prevailing belief that all small bulges form at later times from internal processes occurring in the disk represents a challenge for the ΛCDM scenario. Notably, the coevolution …
We study the relation between the properties of the bulge/disc components and the HI mass fraction of galaxies. We find that at fixed stellar mass, disc colours are correlated with the HI mass fraction, while bulge colours are not. The lack of a correlation between the bulge colour and the HI mass fraction is regardless whether the bulges are pseudo, or whether the galaxies host bars or are interacting with a neighbour. There is no strong correlation between the colours of the discs and bulges either. These results suggest that the current total amount of HI is closely related to the formation…
We measure optical colors for the bulges of 312 disk galaxies from the Carnegie-Irvine Galaxy Survey and convert their previously available $R$-band structural parameters to stellar mass parameters. We also measure their average stellar mass surface density in the central 1 kpc ($Σ_{1}$). Comparing the mass-based Kormendy relation with the original one based on flux, we find that the majority of the classifications into classical and pseudo bulges, as well as their overall statistical properties, remain essentially unchanged. While the bulge type classifications of the Kormendy relation are ro…
We show that the stellar specific angular momentum j_*, mass M_*, and bulge fraction beta_* of normal galaxies of all morphological types are consistent with a simple model based on a linear superposition of independent disks and bulges. In this model, disks and bulges follow scaling relations of the form j_*d ~ M_*d^alpha and j_*b ~ M_*b^alpha with alpha = 0.67 +/- 0.07 but offset from each other by a factor of 8 +/- 2 over the mass range 8.9 <= log M_*/M_Sun <= 11.8. Separate fits for disks and bulges alone give alpha = 0.58 +/- 0.10 and alpha = 0.83 +/- 0.16, respectively. This model correc…
We present a structural decomposition analysis of the galaxies in the extended GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey (xGASS) using (gri) images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Utilising the 2D Bayesian light profile fitting code ProFit, we fit single- and double-component models taking advantage of a robust Markov chain Monte Carlo optimisation algorithm in which we assume a Sersic profile for single-component models and a combination of a Sersic bulge and near-exponential disc (0.5 < n < 1.5) for double-component models. We investigate the effect of bulges on the atomic hydrogen (HI) content in galaxi…
The Blanco DECam Bulge Survey (BDBS) imaged more than 200 square degrees of the Southern Galactic bulge using the ugrizY filters of the Dark Energy Camera, and produced point spread function photometry of approximately 250 million unique sources. In this paper, we present details regarding the construction and collation of survey catalogs, and also discuss the adopted calibration and dereddening procedures. Early science results are presented with a particular emphasis on the bulge metallicity distribution function and globular clusters. A key result is the strong correlation (sigma ~ 0.2 dex)…
By applying spectroscopic decomposition methods to a sample of MaNGA early-type galaxies, we separate out spatially and kinematically distinct stellar populations, allowing us to explore the similarities and differences between galaxy bulges and discs, and how they affect the global properties of the galaxy. We find that the components have interesting variations in their stellar populations, and display different kinematics. Bulges tend to be consistently more metal rich than their disc counterparts, and while the ages of both components are comparable, there is an interesting tail of younger…
The formation of galaxies and their various components can be stringent tests of dark matter models and of gravity theories. In the standard cold dark matter (CDM) model, spheroids are formed through mergers in a strongly hierarchical scenario, and also in the early universe through dynamical friction in clumpy galaxies. More secularly, pseudo-bulges are formed by the inner vertical resonance with bars. The high efficiency of bulge formation is in tension with observations in the local universe of a large amount of bulge-less spiral galaxies. In the present work, the formation of bulges in ver…
We explore the internal structure of red sequence galaxies in the Coma cluster across a wide range of luminosities ($-17>M_g>-22$) and cluster-centric radii ($0<r_{\rm{cluster}}<1.3 r_{200}$). We present the 2D bulge-disc decomposition of galaxies in deep Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope $u,g,i$ imaging using GALFIT. Rigorous filtering is applied to identify an analysis sample of 200 galaxies which are well described by an `archetypal' S0 structure (central bulge + outer disc). We consider internal bulge and/or disc colour gradients by allowing component sizes to vary between bands. Gradients ar…
The Blanco Dark Energy Camera (DECam) Bulge survey is a Vera Rubin Observatory (LSST) pathfinder imaging survey, spanning $\sim 200$ sq. deg. of the Southern Galactic bulge, $-2^\circ <$b$< -13^\circ$ and $-11^\circ <$l$ < +11^\circ$. We have employed the CTIO-4m telescope and the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) to image a contiguous $\sim 200$ sq. deg. region of the relatively less reddened Southern Galactic bulge, in SDSS $u$ + Pan-STARRS$grizy$. Optical photometry with its large colour baseline will be used to investigate the age and metallicity distributions of the major structures of the bulge…
The star formation main sequence (SFMS) is a tight relation between the galaxy star formation rate (SFR) and its total stellar mass ($M_\star$). Early-type galaxies (ETGs) are often considered as low-SFR outliers of this relation. We study, for the first time, the separated distribution in the SFR vs. $M_\star$ of bulges and discs of 49 ETGs from the CALIFA survey. This is achieved using C2D, a new code to perform spectro-photometric decompositions of integral field spectroscopy datacubes. Our results reflect that: i) star formation always occurs in the disc component and not in bulges; ii) st…
We present an integral field study of the internal structure, kinematics and stellar population of the almost edge-on, intermediate luminosity ($L_ {*}$) elliptical galaxy NGC 4697. We build extended 2-dimensional (2D) maps of the stellar kinematics and line-strengths of the galaxy up to $\sim 0.7 $ effective radii (R$_{eff}$) using a mosaic of 8 VIMOS (VIsible Multi-Objects Spectrograph on the VLT) integral-field unit pointings. We find clear evidence for a rotation-supported structure along the major axis from the 2D kinematical maps, confirming the previous classification of this system as …
We present rest-frame $B$ and $I$ imaging of 35 low-redshift ($z < 0.5$) Palomar-Green quasars using the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3. We perform multi-component two-dimensional image decomposition to separate the host galaxy from its bright active nucleus, characterize its morphology, and measure its photometric properties. Special care is devoted to quantifying the structural parameters of the galaxy bulge, determine its $B-I$ color, and estimate its stellar mass. Roughly half of the sample, comprising the less luminous ($L_{5100} \lesssim 10^{45}\,\mathrm{erg\,s^{-1}}$) but mo…
About 20% of low-redshift galaxies are late-type spirals with a small or no bulge component. Although they are the simplest disk galaxies in terms of structure and dynamics, the role of the different physical processes driving their formation and evolution is not yet fully understood. We investigated whether small bulges of late-type spirals follow the same scaling relations traced by ellipticals and large bulges and if they are disk-like or classical bulges. We derived the photometric and kinematic properties of 9 nearby late-type spirals. To this aim, we analyzed the surface brightness distr…
The details of bulge formation via collapse, mergers, secular processes or their interplay remain unresolved. To start answering this question and quantify the importance of distinct mechanisms, we mapped a sample of three galactic bulges using data from the integral field spectrograph WiFeS on the ANU 2.3m telescope in Siding Spring Observatory. Its high resolution gratings (R=7000) allow us to present a detailed kinematic and stellar population analysis of their inner structures with classical and novel techniques. The comparison of those techniques calls for the necessity of inversion algor…
2D Surface Brightness Modelling of Large 2MASS Galaxies II: The Role of Classical Bulges and Pseudobulges on Galaxy Scaling Relations and its implication for Supermassive Black Hole Formation
We present a new database of our two-dimensional bulge-disk decompositions for 14,233 galaxies drawn from SDSS DR12 in order to examine the properties of bulges residing in the local universe ($0.005 < z < 0.05$). We performed decompositions in $g$ and $r$ bands by utilizing the {\sc{galfit}} software. The bulge colors and bulge-to-total ratios are found to be sensitive to the details in the decomposition technique, and hence we hereby provide full details of our method. The $g-r$ colors of bulges derived are almost constantly red regardless of bulge size except for the bulges in the low bulge…
We present structural parameters and (g-i) bulge/disk colors for a large sample (189) of isolated AMIGA galaxies. The structural parameters of bulges were derived from the 2D bulge/disk/bar decomposition of SDSS i-band images using GALFIT. Galaxies were separated between classical bulges (n_b>2.5) and pseudobulges (n_b<2.5), resulting in a dominant pseudobulge population (94%) with only 12 classical bulges. In the <mu_e>-Re plane, pseudobulges are distributed below the elliptical relation (smaller Re and fainter mu_e), with the closest region to the Kormendy relation populated by those pseudob…
Bulges are of different types, morphologies and kinematics, from pseudo-bulges, close to disk properties (Sersic index, rotation fraction, flatenning), to classical de Vaucouleurs bulges, close to elliptical galaxies. Secular evolution and bar development can give rise to pseudo-bulges. To ensure prolonged secular evolution, gas flows are required along the galaxy life-time. There is growing evidence for cold gas accretion around spiral galaxies. This can explain the bar cycle of destruction and reformation, together with pseudo-bulge formation. However, bulges can also be formed through major…
This series of papers aims at understanding the formation and evolution of non-barred disc galaxies. We use the new spectro-photometric decomposition code, C2D, to separate the spectral information of bulges and discs of a statistically representative sample of galaxies from the CALIFA survey. Then, we study their stellar population properties analising the structure-independent datacubes with the Pipe3D algorithm. We find a correlation between the bulge-to-total ($B/T$) luminosity (and mass) ratio and galaxy stellar mass. The $B/T$ mass ratio has only a mild evolution with redshift, but the b…
We present a detailed comparison between the photometric properties of the bulges of two simulated galaxies and those of a uniform sample of observed galaxies. This analysis shows that the simulated galaxies have bulges with realistic surface brightnesses for their sizes and magnitude. These two field disc galaxies have rotational velocities ~ 100 km/s and were integrated to a redshift of zero in a fully cosmological Lambda cold dark matter context as part of high-resolution smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations. We performed bulge-disc decompositions of the galaxies using artificial obse…
The effect of AGN wind feedback on the accretion rate and mass evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBH) is considered. It is shown, under reasonable assumptions, that the rate at which gas can be supplied to a SMBH at the center of a young galaxy, is limited to $\sim 20 (σ/350~ {\rm km ~s^{-1}})^4~M_\odot/yr$ (where $σ$ is the velocity dispersion of the host bulge) by interaction of winds expelled from the innermost regions of the accretion flow with the gas in the bulge. This rate is independent of the black hole mass but is sensitive to the properties of the host bulge. It is further arg…
Establishing a correlation (or lack thereof) between the bimodal colour distribution of galaxies and their structural parameters is crucial to understand the origin of bimodality. To achieve that, we have performed 2D mass-based structural decomposition (bulge+disc) of all disc galaxies (total$=$1263) in the Herschel imaging area of the Stripe 82 region using $K_s$ band images from the VICS82 survey. The scaling relations thus derived are found to reflect the internal kinematics and are employed in combination to select an indubitable set of classical and pseudo bulge hosting disc galaxies. Th…
We present HST images for nine megamaser disk galaxies with the primary goal of studying photometric BH-galaxy scaling relations. The megamaser disks provide the highest-precision extragalactic BH mass measurements, while our high-resolution HST imaging affords us the opportunity to decompose the complex nuclei of their late-type hosts in detail. Based on the morphologies and shapes of the galaxy nuclei, we argue that most of these galaxies' central regions contain secularly evolving components (pseudo-bulges), and in many cases we photometrically identify co-existing "classical" bulge compone…
Observations suggest that the dark matter and stars in early-type galaxies `conspire' to produce a surprisingly simple distribution of total mass, $ρ(r)\proptoρ^{-γ}$, with $γ\approx2$. We measure the distribution of mass in 48 early-type galaxies that gravitationally lens a resolved background source. By fitting the source light in every pixel of images from the Hubble Space Telescope, we find a mean $\langleγ\rangle=2.075_{-0.024}^{+0.023}$ with intrinsic scatter between galaxies of $σ_γ=0.172^{+0.022}_{-0.032}$ for the overall sample. This is consistent with, and has similar precision to tr…
The origin of S0 galaxies is discussed in the framework of early mergers in a Cold Dark Matter cosmology, and in a scenario where S0s are assumed to be former spirals stripped of gas. From an analysis of 127 early-type disk galaxies (S0-Sa), we find a clear correlation between the scale parameters of the bulge (r_eff) and the disk (h_R), a correlation which is difficult to explain if these galaxies were formed in mergers of disk galaxies. However, the stripping hypothesis, including quiescent star formation, is not sufficient to explain the origin of S0s either, because it is not compatible wi…
Several recent papers have reported on the occurrence of active galactic nuclei (AGN) containing under-massive black holes relative to a linear scaling relation between black hole mass (M_bh) and host spheroid stellar mass (M_sph,*). Dramatic revisions to the M_bh-M_sph,* and M_bh-L_sph relations, based on samples containing predominantly inactive galaxies, have however recently identified a new steeper relation at M_bh < (2-10)x10^8 M_Sun, roughly corresponding to M_sph,* < (0.3-1)x10^{11} M_Sun. We show that this steeper, quadratic-like M_bh-M_sph,* relation defined by the Sersic galaxies, i…

We study the statistical properties of 320 bulges of disk galaxies in the Carnegie-Irvine Galaxy Survey, using robust structural parameters of galaxies derived from image fitting. We apply the Kormendy relation to classify classical and pseudo bulges and characterize bulge dichotomy with respect to bulge structural properties and physical properties of host galaxies. We confirm previous findings that pseudo bulges on average have smaller Sérsic indices, smaller bulge-to-total ratios, and fainter surface brightnesses when compared with classical bulges. Our sizable sample statistically shows th…
We investigate the scaling relations between the supermassive black holes mass (M_bh) and the host bulge mass in elliptical galaxies, classical bulges, and pseudo-bulges. We use two-dimensional image analysis software BUDDA to obtain the structural parameters of 57 galaxies with dynamical M_bh measurement, and determine the bulge K-band luminosities (L_bul,K), stellar masses (M_s), and dynamical masses (M_d). The updated M_bh-L_bul,K, M_bh-M_s, and M_bh-M_d correlations for elliptical galaxies and classical bulges give M_bh~0.006M_s or 0.003M_d. The most tight relationship is log(M_bh/M_sun)=a…
Collisional ring galaxies (CRGs) are formed through off-center collisions between a target galaxy and an intruder dwarf galaxy. We study the mass distribution and kinematics of the CRGs by tuning the bulge-to-disk mass ratio ($B/D$) for the progenitor; i.e., the target galaxy. We find that the lifetime of the ring correlates with the initial impact velocity vertical to the disk plane (i.e., $v_{z0}$). Three orbits for the collisional galaxy pair, on which clear and asymmetric rings form after collisions, are selected to perform the \textit{N}-body simulations at different values of $B/D$ for t…
Our knowledge about the photometric properties of bulges in late-type galaxies (LTGs) is founded upon image decomposition into a Sérsic model for the central luminosity excess of the bulge and an exponential model for the underlying disk. We argue that the standard practice of adopting an exponential model for the disk all the way to its center is inadequate because it implicitly neglects the fact of star formation (SF) quenching (SFQ) in the centers of LTGs. Extrapolating the fit for the observable star-forming zone of the disk (outside the bulge) inwardly overestimates the true surface brigh…
To break the degeneracy among galactic stellar components, we extract kinematic structures using the framework described in Du et al. (2019, 2020). For example, the concept of stellar halos is generalized to weakly-rotating structures that are composed of loosely bound stars, which can hence be associated to both disk and elliptical type morphologies. By applying this method to central galaxies with stellar mass $10^{10-11.5}\ M_\odot$ from the TNG50 simulation, we identify three broadly-defined types of galaxies: ones dominated by disk, by bulge, or by stellar halo structures. We then use the…
The (supermassive black hole mass, $M_\text{BH}$)-(bulge stellar mass, $M_{\rm*,sph}$) relation is, obviously, derived using two quantities. We endeavor to provide accurate values for the latter via detailed multicomponent galaxy decompositions for the current full sample of 43 spiral galaxies having directly measured $M_\text{BH}$ values; 35 of these galaxies have been alleged to contain pseudobulges, 21 have water maser measurements, and three appear bulgeless. This more than doubles the previous sample size of spiral galaxies with a finessed image analysis. We have analyzed near-infrared im…
Based on the stellar orbit distribution derived from orbit-superposition Schwarzschild models, we decompose each of 250 representative present-day galaxies into four orbital components: cold with strong rotation, warm with weak rotation, hot with dominant random motion and counter-rotating (CR). We rebuild the surface brightness ($Σ$) of each orbital component and we present in figures and tables a quantification of their morphologies using the Sersic index \textit{n}, concentration $C = \log{(Σ_{0.1R_e}/Σ_{R_e})}$ and intrinsic flattening $q_{\mathrm{Re}}$ and $q_{\mathrm{Rmax}}$, with $R_e$ …
We review the observed morphological, photometric, and kinematic properties of boxy/peanut (B/P) shape bulges. Nearly half of the bulges in the nearby edge-on galaxies have these characteristics, which fraction is similar to the observed bar fraction in Hubble types earlier than Scd. B/P bulges are generally detected in the edge-on view, but it has been recently demonstrated that barlenses, which are lens-like structures embedded in bars, are the more face-on counterparts of the B/P bulges. Multi-component structural decompositions have shown that B/P/barlens structures are likely to account f…
Galaxy morphologies, kinematics, and stellar populations are thought to be linked to each other. However, both simulations and observations have pointed out mismatches therein. In this work, we study the nature and origin of the present-day quenched, bulge-dominated, but dynamically cold galaxies within a stellar mass range of $10.3\,\leqslant\,\log\,M_{\ast}/\mathrm{M_{\odot}}\,\leqslant\,11.2$ in the IllustrisTNG-100 Simulation. We compare these galaxies with a population of normal star-forming dynamically cold disc galaxies and a population of normal quenched dynamically hot elliptical gala…
I review our understanding of classic dynamical scaling relations, relating luminosity, size and kinematics of early-type galaxies. Using unbiased determinations of galaxy mass profiles from stellar dynamical models, a simple picture has emerged in which scaling relations are driven by virial equilibrium, accompanied by a trend in the stellar mass-to-light ratio (M/L). This picture confirms the earliest insights. The trend is mainly due to the combined variation of age, metallicity and the stellar initial mass function (IMF). The systematic variations best correlate with the galaxy velocity di…
We present multi-component decomposition of high-quality $R$-band images of 312 disk galaxies from the Carnegie-Irvine Galaxy Survey. In addition to bulges and disks, we successfully model nuclei, bars, disk breaks, nuclear/inner lenses, and inner rings. Our modeling strategy treats nuclear rings and nuclear bars as part of the bulge component, while other features such as spiral arms, outer lenses, and outer rings are omitted from the fits because they are not crucial for accurate bulge measurements. The error budget of bulge parameters includes the uncertainties from sky level measurements a…
In our first paper, we performed a detailed (i.e. bulge, disks, bars, spiral arms, rings, halo, nucleus, etc.) decomposition of 66 galaxies, with directly measured black hole masses, $M_{BH}$, that had been imaged at $3.6~μm$ with Spitzer. Our sample is the largest to date and, for the first time, the decompositions were checked for consistency with the galaxy kinematics. We present correlations between $M_{ BH}$ and the host spheroid (and galaxy) luminosity, $L_{sph}$ (and $L_{gal}$), and also stellar mass, $M_{*,sph}$. While most previous studies have used galaxy samples that were overwhelmi…
Cosmological models predict that galaxies forming in the early Universe experience a chaotic phase of gas accretion and star formation, followed by gas ejection due to feedback processes. Galaxy bulges may assemble later via mergers or internal evolution. Here we present submillimeter observations (with spatial resolution of 700 parsecs) of ALESS 073.1, a starburst galaxy at redshift z~5, when the Universe was 1.2 billion years old. This galaxy's cold gas forms a regularly rotating disk with negligible noncircular motions. The galaxy rotation curve requires the presence of a central bulge in a…
We study the early growth of massive seed black holes (BHs) via accretion in protogalactic nuclei where the stellar bulge component is assembled, performing axisymmetric two-dimensional radiation hydrodynamical simulations. We find that when a seed BH with $M_\bullet \sim 10^5~M_\odot$ is embedded in dense metal-poor gas ($Z=0.01~Z_\odot$) with a density of $\gtrsim 100~{\rm cm}^{-3}$ and bulge stars with a total mass of $M_\star \gtrsim 100~M_\bullet$, a massive gaseous disk feeds the BH efficiently at rates of $\gtrsim 0.3-1~M_\odot~{\rm yr}^{-1}$ and the BH mass increases nearly tenfold wit…
We use N-body simulations of bar formation in isolated galaxies to study the effect of bulge mass and bulge concentration on bar formation. Bars are global disk instabilities that evolve by transferring angular momentum from the inner to outer disks and to the dark matter halo. It is well known that a massive spherical component such as halo in a disk galaxy can make it bar stable. In this study we explore the effect of another spherical component, the bulge, on bar formation in disk galaxies. In our models we vary both the bulge mass and concentration. We have used two sets of models, one tha…
The intrinsic shape of galactic bulges in nearby galaxies provides crucial information to separate bulge types. We intended to derive accurate constraints to the intrinsic shape of bulges to provide new clues on their formation mechanisms and set new limitations for future simulations. We retrieved the intrinsic shape of a sample of CALIFA bulges using a statistical approach. Taking advantage of GalMer numerical simulations of binary mergers we estimated the reliability of the procedure. Analyzing the $i$-band mock images of resulting lenticular remnants, we studied the intrinsic shape of thei…
Tidal disruption events (TDEs) provide a means to probe the low end of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass distribution, as they are only observable below the Hills mass ($\lesssim 10^8$ M$_\odot$). Here we attempt to calibrate the scaling of SMBH mass with host galaxy bulge mass, enabling SMBH masses to be estimated for large TDE samples without the need for follow-up observations or extrapolations of relations based on high-mass samples. We derive host galaxy masses using Prospector fits to the UV-MIR spectral energy distributions for the hosts of 29 well-observed TDEs with BH mass estim…
The Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey (PIGS) V: a chemo-dynamical investigation of the early assembly of the Milky Way with the most metal-poor stars in the bulge
Our knowledge on the central components of disk galaxies has grown substantially in the past few decades, particularly so in the last. This frantic activity and the complexity of the subject promote confusion in the community. In these notes, I discuss the concept of galactic bulge and its different flavors. I also address fundamental scaling relations and the bulge-elliptical galaxy connection, their central black holes and formation models. In particular, I aim at conveying three important notions: (i): box/peanuts are just the inner parts of bars; (ii): the physical reality of two different…
