We investigate the scaling relations between the supermassive black holes mass (M_bh) and the host bulge mass in elliptical galaxies, classical bulges, and pseudo-bulges. We use two-dimensional image analysis software BUDDA to obtain the structural parameters of 57 galaxies with dynamical M_bh measurement, and determine the bulge K-band luminosities (L_bul,K), stellar masses (M_s), and dynamical masses (M_d). The updated M_bh-L_bul,K, M_bh-M_s, and M_bh-M_d correlations for elliptical galaxies and classical bulges give M_bh~0.006M_s or 0.003M_d. The most tight relationship is log(M_bh/M_sun)=a+b log(M_d/10^11 M_sun), with a=8.46+/-0.05, b=0.90+/-0.06, and intrinsic scatter 0.27 dex. The pseudo-bulges follow their own relations, they harbor an order of magnitude smaller black holes than those in the same massive classical bulges, i.e. M_bh~0.0003M_s or 0.0002M_d. Besides the M_bh-σ(bulge stellar velocity dispersion) relation, these bulge type dependent M_bh-M_bul scaling relations provide information for the growth and coevolution histories of SMBHs and their host bulges. We also find the core elliptical galaxies obey the same M_bh-M_d relation with other normal elliptical galaxies, that is expected in the dissipationless merger scenario.
We study the statistical properties of 320 bulges of disk galaxies in the Carnegie-Irvine Galaxy Survey, using robust structural parameters of galaxies derived from image fitting. We apply the Kormendy relation to classify classical and pseudo bulges and characterize bulge dichotomy with respect to bulge structural properties and physical properties of host galaxies. We confirm previous findings that pseudo bulges on average have smaller Sérsic indices, smaller bulge-to-total ratios, and fainter surface brightnesses when compared with classical bulges. Our sizable sample statistically shows th…
Cosmological simulations predict more classical bulges than their observational counterpart in the local Universe. Here, we quantify evolution of the bulges since $z=0.1$ using photometric parameters of nearly 39,000 unbarred disc galaxies from SDSS DR7 which are well represented by two components. We adopted a combination of the Sérsic index and Kormendy relation to separate classical bulges and disc-like pseudo-bulges. We found that the fraction of pseudo-bulges (classical bulges) smoothly increases (decreases) as the Universe gets older. In the history of the Universe, there comes a point (…
The Galactic bulge has a bimodal metallicity distribution function: different kinematic, spatial, and, potentially, age distributions characterize the metal-poor and metal-rich components. Despite this observed dichotomy, which argues for different formation channels for those stars, the distribution of bulge stars in the $α$-abundance versus metallicity plane has been found so far to be a rather smooth single sequence. We use data from the fourteenth data release of the APOGEE spectroscopic survey (DR14) to investigate the distribution in the Mg abundance (as tracer of the $α$-elements)-versu…
The clustering of galaxies with pseudo bulge and classical bulge in the local Universe
Through vertical resonances, bars can produce pseudo-bulges, within secular evolution. Bulges and pseudo-bulges have doubled their mass since z=1. The frequency of bulge-less galaxies at z=0 is difficult to explain, especially since clumpy galaxies at high z should create classical bulges in all galaxies. This issue is solved in modified gravity models. Bars and spirals in a galaxy disk, produce gravity torques that drive the gas to the center and fuel central star formation and nuclear activity. At 0.1-1kpc scale, observations of gravity torques show that only about one third of Seyfert galax…
Spiral-driven instabilities may drive gas inflow to enhance central star formation in disk galaxies. We investigate this hypothesis using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) in a sample of 2779 nearby unbarred star-forming main-sequence spiral galaxies. The strength of spiral arms is quantified by their average Fourier amplitude relative to the axisymmetric disk. The star formation properties in the central 1--3\,kpc region were derived from the SDSS spectra. We show that galaxies with stronger spiral arms not only tend to have more intense central specific star formation rate (sSFR), larger B…
2D Surface Brightness Modelling of Large 2MASS Galaxies II: The Role of Classical Bulges and Pseudobulges on Galaxy Scaling Relations and its implication for Supermassive Black Hole Formation
We use bulge-type classifications of 809 representative SDSS galaxies by Gadotti (2009) to classify a large sample of galaxies into real bulges (classical or elliptical) and pseudobulges using Random Forest. We use structural and stellar population predictors that can easily be measured without image decomposition. Multiple parameters such as the central mass density with 1 kpc, concentration index, Sérsic index and velocity dispersion do result in accurate bulge classifications when combined together. We classify $\sim 44,500$ face-on galaxies above stellar mass of 10$^{10}$ M$_\odot$ and red…
We study the galactic bulges in the Auriga simulations, a suite of thirty cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations of late-type galaxies in Milky Way-sized dark matter haloes performed with the moving-mesh code AREPO. We aim to characterize bulge formation mechanisms in this large suite of galaxies simulated at high resolution in a fully cosmological context. The bulges of the Auriga galaxies show a large variety in their shapes, sizes and formation histories. According to observational classification criteria, such as Sersic index and degree of ordered rotation, the majority of …
Galaxy flybys are as common as mergers in low redshift universe and are important for galaxy evolution as they involve the exchange of significant amounts of mass and energy. In this study we investigate the effect of minor flybys on the bulges, disks, and spiral arms of Milky Way mass galaxies for two types of bulges - classical bulges and boxy/peanut pseudobulges. Our N-body simulations comprise of two disk galaxies of mass ratios 10:1 and 5:1, where the disks of the galaxies lie in their orbital plane and the pericenter distance is varied. We performed photometric and kinematic bulge-disk d…
Establishing a correlation (or lack thereof) between the bimodal colour distribution of galaxies and their structural parameters is crucial to understand the origin of bimodality. To achieve that, we have performed 2D mass-based structural decomposition (bulge+disc) of all disc galaxies (total$=$1263) in the Herschel imaging area of the Stripe 82 region using $K_s$ band images from the VICS82 survey. The scaling relations thus derived are found to reflect the internal kinematics and are employed in combination to select an indubitable set of classical and pseudo bulge hosting disc galaxies. Th…
A tantalizing enigma in extragalactic astronomy concerns the chronology and driving mechanisms of the build-up of late-type galaxies (LTGs). The standard scenario envisages two formation routes, with classical bulges (CBs) assembling first in a quick quasi-monolithic episode followed by gradual disk assembly, and pseudo-bulges (PBs) forming over the Gyr-long secular evolution of LTGs. The expectation is, therefore, the segregation of present-day LTG bulges into two distinct groups. Here we analyse the star formation histories (SFHs) of bulges and disks for 135 LTGs from the CALIFA survey cover…
We study the relation between the properties of the bulge/disc components and the HI mass fraction of galaxies. We find that at fixed stellar mass, disc colours are correlated with the HI mass fraction, while bulge colours are not. The lack of a correlation between the bulge colour and the HI mass fraction is regardless whether the bulges are pseudo, or whether the galaxies host bars or are interacting with a neighbour. There is no strong correlation between the colours of the discs and bulges either. These results suggest that the current total amount of HI is closely related to the formation…
We present rest-frame $B$ and $I$ imaging of 35 low-redshift ($z < 0.5$) Palomar-Green quasars using the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3. We perform multi-component two-dimensional image decomposition to separate the host galaxy from its bright active nucleus, characterize its morphology, and measure its photometric properties. Special care is devoted to quantifying the structural parameters of the galaxy bulge, determine its $B-I$ color, and estimate its stellar mass. Roughly half of the sample, comprising the less luminous ($L_{5100} \lesssim 10^{45}\,\mathrm{erg\,s^{-1}}$) but mo…
We investigate the relation of black hole mass versus host stellar mass and that of mass accretion rate versus star formation rate (SFR) in moderately luminous ($\log L_{\rm bol} \sim 44.5-46.5\ {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$), X-ray selected broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at $z=1.18-1.68$ in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field. The far-infrared to far-ultraviolet spectral energy distributions of 85 AGNs are reproduced with the latest version of Code Investigating GALaxy Emission ({\tt CIGALE}), where the AGN clumpy torus model {\tt SKIRTOR} is implemented. Most of their hosts are confirmed to be m…

We measure optical colors for the bulges of 312 disk galaxies from the Carnegie-Irvine Galaxy Survey and convert their previously available $R$-band structural parameters to stellar mass parameters. We also measure their average stellar mass surface density in the central 1 kpc ($Σ_{1}$). Comparing the mass-based Kormendy relation with the original one based on flux, we find that the majority of the classifications into classical and pseudo bulges, as well as their overall statistical properties, remain essentially unchanged. While the bulge type classifications of the Kormendy relation are ro…
