We present the first results of extragalactic black hole X-ray binaries LMC X-1 and LMC X-3 using all the archival and legacy observations by AstroSat during the period of $2016-2020$. Broadband energy spectra ($0.5-20$ keV) of both sources obtained from the SXT and LAXPC on-board AstroSat are characterized by strong thermal disc blackbody component ($kT_{in}\sim1$keV, $f_{disc}>79\%$) along with a steep power-law ($Γ\sim2.4-3.2$). Bolometric luminosity of LMC X-1 varies from $7-10\%$ of Eddington luminosity ($L_{Edd}$) and for LMC X-3 is in the range $7-13\%$ of $L_{Edd}$. We study the long-term variation of the light curve using MAXI data and find the fractional variance to be $\sim25\%$ for LMC X-1 and $\sim53\%$ for LMC X-3. We examine the temporal properties of both sources and obtain fractional rms variability of PDS in the frequency range $0.002-10$ Hz to be $\sim9\%-17\%$ for LMC X-1, and $\sim7\%-11\%$ for LMC X-3. The `spectro-temporal' properties indicate both sources are in thermally dominated soft state. By modelling the spectra with relativistic accretion disc model, we determine the mass of LMC X-1 and LMC X-3 in the range $7.64-10.00$ $M_{\odot}$ and $5.35-6.22$ $M_{\odot}$ respectively. We also constrain the spin of LMC X-1 to be in the range $0.82-0.92$ and that of LMC X-3 in $0.22-0.41$ with 90\% confidence. We discuss the implications of our results in the context of accretion dynamics around the black hole binaries and compare it with the previous findings of both sources.
We report the results of broadband timing and spectral analysis of data from an AstroSat observation of the High Mass X-ray binary LMC X$-$4. The Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) and Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) instruments on-board the AstroSat observed the source in August 2016. A complete X-ray eclipse was detected with the LAXPC. The 3$-$40 keV power density spectrum showed the presence of coherent pulsations along with a $\sim 26$ mHz quasi-periodic oscillation feature. The spectral properties of LMC X$-$4 were derived from a joint analysis of the SXT and LAXPC spectral data. T…
LMC X-1, a persistent, rapidly rotating, extra-galactic, black hole X-ray binary (BHXB) discovered in 1969, has always been observed in its high soft state. Unlike many other BHXBs, the black hole mass, source distance and binary orbital inclination are well established. In this work, we report the results of simultaneous broadband spectral studies of LMC X-1 carried out using the data from Soft X-ray Telescope and Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter aboard AstroSat as observed on 2016 November 26$^{th}$ and 2017 August 28$^{th}$. The combined spectrum was modelled with a multicolour blackbo…
In this paper, we report the first results of the extragalactic Z-source LMC X-2 obtained using the $\sim$ 140 ks observations with {\it Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC)} and {\it Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT)} onboard {\it AstroSat}. The HID created with the {\it LAXPC} data revealed a complete Z-pattern of the source, showing all the three branches. We studied the evolution of the broadband X-ray spectra in the energy range of $0.5-20.0$ keV along the Z-track, a first such study of this source. The X-ray spectra of the different parts of the Z-pattern were well described by an abso…
Extragalactic black hole X-ray binaries LMC X-1 and LMC X-3 are the persistent sources, usually found in soft spectral state. We present the results from spectral and timing study of these sources using MAXI, NICER, NuSTAR and AstroSat observations carried out during 2014-2020. Study of long-term MAXI lightcurve shows that the fractional variability of flux in 2-10keV is moderate ($\sim$20%) in LMCX-1 and high ($\sim$50%) in LMCX-3. The energy spectra of both sources are characterized by a disc blackbody and a Comptonization component with LMCX-1 having an additional Fe-line emission feature. …
Broadband spectral studies of Type-I X-ray bursts can put strong constraints on the physics of burst spectra as well as their interaction with the environment. We present the results obtained from the broadband time-resolved spectroscopy of 15 thermonuclear bursts detected simultaneously from the neutron star atoll source 4U 1636-536 using LAXPC and SXT onboard AstroSat. During the observations with AstroSat, the Low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) 4U 1636-536 is observed to show a modest spectral evolution within the island state. The broadband burst spectra are observed to show an excess in additio…
We have carried out the first spectro-polarimetric study of the bright NS-LMXB GX 9+9 using IXPE and AstroSat observations. We report a significant detection of polarization of $1.7\pm 0.4\%$ over the $2-8$ keV energy band, with a polarization angle of $63^{\circ}\pm 7^{\circ}$. The polarization is found to be energy-dependent, with a $3σ$ polarization degree consistent with null polarization in $2-4$ keV, and $3.2\%$ in $4-8$ keV. Typical of the spectra seen in NS-LMXBs, we find that a combination of soft thermal emission from the accretion disc and Comptonized component from the optically th…
We report the results of the analysis of an AstroSat observation of the Black Hole candidate MAXI J1535-571 during its Hard Intermediate state. We studied the evolution of the spectral and timing parameters of the source during the observation. The observation covered a period of $\sim$5 days and consisted of 66 continuous segments, corresponding to individual spacecraft orbits. Each segment was analysed independently. The source count rate increased roughly linearly by $\sim$30 %. We modelled the spectra as a combination of radiation from a thermal disk component and a power-law. The timing a…
We present the results of Target of Opportunity (ToO) observations made with AstroSat of the newly discovered black hole binary MAXI J1535-571. We detect prominent C-type Quasi-periodic Oscillations (QPOs) of frequencies varying from 1.85 Hz to 2.88 Hz, along with distinct harmonics in all the AstroSat observations. We note that while the fundamental QPO is seen in the 3 - 50 keV energy band, the harmonic is not significant above ~ 35 keV. The AstroSat observations were made in the hard intermediate state, as seen from state transitions observed by MAXI and Swift. We attempt spectral modelling…
AstroSat spectra of the black hole system GRS 1915+105 during the heartbeat state (with a varying oscillation period from 150 to 100 secs) were analysed using a truncated relativistic disc model along with a Comptonization component. Spectra were fitted for segments of length ~ 24 secs. The oscillation can be described as coordinated variations of the accretion rate, Comptonised flux, and the inner disc radius, with the latter ranging from 1.235-5 gravitational radii. Comparison with results from the $χ$ and Intermediate states shows that while the accretion rate and the high energy photon ind…
We report results from the spectro-timing analysis of the atoll source 4U 1636$-$536 observed with NuSTAR and AstroSat during its hard spectral state. In three observations of 207 ks total exposure, we identify 31 thermonuclear X-ray bursts including five doublets and a triplet. Recurrence time as short as 3.8 minutes is seen in one of the doublets. To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest recurrence time known for this source. Our time-averaged spectroscopy during the bursts indicate the presence of an additional powerlaw or a blackbody component in a few cases, perhaps due to varyi…
We present a detailed timing and spectral study of an extremely variable narrow-line Seyfert~1 galaxy NGC 4748 using observations in the year 2017 and 2014 performed with AstroSat and XMM-Newton, respectively. Both observations show extremely variable soft and hard X-ray emission that are correlated with each other. In the 2014 data set, the source retains its general behaviour of "softer when brighter" while the 2017 observation exhibits a "harder when brighter" nature. Such changing behaviour is rare in AGNs and is usually observed in the black hole binary systems. The "harder when brighter"…
The CZTI (Cadmium Zinc Telluride Imager) onboard AstroSat is a high energy coded mask imager and spectrometer in the energy range of 20 - 100 keV. Above 100 keV, the dominance of Compton scattering cross-section in CZTI results in a significant number of 2-pixel Compton events and these have been successfully utilized for polarization analysis of Crab pulsar and nebula (and transients like Gamma-ray bursts) in 100 - 380 keV. These 2-pixel Compton events can also be used to extend the spectroscopic energy range of CZTI up to 380 keV for bright sources. However, unlike the spectroscopy in primar…
The Cadmium Zinc Telluride Imager (CZTI) onboard AstroSat is designed for hard X-ray imaging and spectroscopy in the energy range of 20 - 100 keV. The CZT detectors are of 5 mm thickness and hence have good efficiency for Compton interactions beyond 100 keV. The polarisation analysis using CZTI relies on such Compton events and have been verified experimentally. The same Compton events can also be used to extend the spectroscopy up to 380 keV. Further, it has been observed that about 20% pixels of the CZTI detector plane have low gain, and they are excluded from the primary spectroscopy. If th…
We present the X-ray spectral and timing analysis of the transient black hole X-ray binary 4U 1630-47, observed with the AstroSat, Chandra and MAXI space missions during its soft X-ray outburst in 2016. The outburst, from the rising phase until the peak, is neither detected in hard X-rays (15-50 keV) by the Swift/BAT nor in radio. Such non-detection along with the source behavior in the hardness-intensity and color-color diagrams obtained using MAXI data confirm that both Chandra and AstroSat observations were performed during the high soft spectral state. The High Energy Grating (HEG) spectru…
We report the results from \textit{AstroSat} observations of the transient Galactic black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1535-571 during its hard-intermediate state of the 2017 outburst. We systematically study the individual and joint spectra from two simultaneously observing \textit{AstroSat} X-ray instruments, and probe and measure a number of parameter values of accretion disc, corona and reflection from the disc in the system using models with generally increasing complexities. Using our broadband ($1.3-70$ keV) X-ray spectrum, we clearly show that a soft X-ray instrument, which works below $\si…
We report the broadband spectro-temporal study of the poorly studied accreting neutron star (NS) low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) 4U 1724-30 using data from Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) and Large Area X-ray Proportional Counters (LAXPC) instruments on board AstroSat. The dim persistent LMXB source was observed with AstroSat over 4 epochs in 2017, all of which corresponded to a low-luminosity non-thermal emission dominated (hard/island) emission state with modest spectral evolution. All the X-ray broadband spectra can be modelled by a combination of thermal emission from the NS boundary layer (BL) or…
We report the first report on cyclotron line studies with the LAXPC instrument onboard AstroSat of the High mass X-ray Binary pulsar 4U 1538-52. During the observation of source which spanned about one day with a net exposure of 50 ks,the source X-ray flux remained constant. Pulse profile is double peaked in low energy range and has a single peak in high energy range, the transition taking place around the cyclotron line energy of the source. Cyclotron Scattering Feature (CRSF) is detected at $\sim$ 22 keV with a very high significance in phase averaged spectrum. It is one of the highest signa…
We present the results obtained from broadband X-ray timing and spectral analysis of black hole candidate MAXI J1803-298 using an AstroSat observation on May 11-12, 2021. Four periodic absorption dips with a periodicity of $7.02 \pm 0.18$ hour are detected in the light curve. AstroSat observe the source when it was undergoing a transition from hard-intermediate state to soft-intermediate state. Our timing analysis reveals the presence of a sharp type-C quasi periodic oscillation (QPO) in the power density spectra (PDS) with an evolving QPO frequency ranging from $5.31 \pm 0.02$ Hz to $7.61\pm …
We study the spectral and temporal properties of MAXI J0637-430 during its 2019-2020 outburst using \textit{NICER}, \textit{AstroSat} and \textit{Swift-XRT} data. The source was in a disc dominant state within a day of its detection and traces out a `c' shaped profile in the HID, similar to the `mini'-outbursts of the recurrent BHB 4U 1630-472. Energy spectrum is obtained in the $0.5-10$ keV band with \textit{NICER} and \textit{Swift-XRT}, and $0.5-25$ keV with \textit{AstroSat}. The spectra can be modelled using a multicolour disc emission (\textit{diskbb}) convolved with a thermal Comptonisa…
IGR J17091--3624 is a transient galactic black hole which has a distinct quasi-periodic variability known as `heartbeat', similar to the one observed in GRS 1915+105. In this paper, we report the results of $\sim 125$ ks \textit{AstroSat} observations of this source during the 2016 outburst. For the first time a double peaked QPO (DPQ) is detected in a few time segments of this source with a difference of $δf ~\sim12$ mHz between the two peaks. The nature of the DPQ was studied based on hardness ratios and using the static as well as the dynamic power spectrum. Additionally, a low frequency (2…
We perform comprehensive temporal and spectral analysis of the newly discovered X-ray transient MAXI~J1803--298 using an AstroSat target of opportunity observation on May 11, 2021 during its outburst. The source was found to be in the hard intermediate state. We detect type C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) at the frequencies of $\sim5.4$ Hz and $\sim6.3$ Hz along with a sub-harmonic at $\sim2.8$ Hz in the $3-15$ keV band. The frequency and fractional rms amplitude of the QPO in the $15-30$ keV band are found to be higher than those in the $3-15$ keV band. We find soft lags of $\sim3.8$ ms …
The Cadmium Zinc Telluride Imager (CZTI) on AstroSat is a hard X-ray coded-aperture mask instrument with a primary field of view of 4.6 x 4.6 degrees (FWHM). The instrument collimators become increasingly transparent at energies above $\sim$100 keV, making CZTI sensitive to radiation from the entire sky. While this has enabled CZTI to detect a large number of off-axis transient sources, calculating the source flux or spectrum requires knowledge of the direction and energy dependent attenuation of the radiation incident upon the detector. Here, we present a GEANT4-based mass model of CZTI and A…
We performed spectro-temporal analysis in the 0.8--50 keV energy band of the neutron star Z source GX 17+2 using AstroSat Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) and Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) data. The source was found to vary in the normal branch of the Hardness Intensity Diagram. Cross-correlation studies of LAXPC light curves in soft and hard X-ray band unveiled anticorrelated lags of the order of few hundred seconds. For the first time, Cross-correlation studies were performed using SXT soft and LAXPC hard lightcurves and they exhibited correlated and anti-correlated lags of the ord…
We present a comprehensive study of GRS 1915+105 in wide energy band ($0.5-60$ keV) using AstroSat observations during the period of $2016-2019$. The MAXI X-ray lightcurve of the source shows rise and decay profiles similar to canonical outbursting black holes. However, the source does not follow the exemplary 'q'-diagram in the Hardness-Intensity Diagram (HID). Model independent analysis of lightcurves suggests that GRS 1915+105 displays various types of variability classes ($δ,χ,ρ,κ,ω$ and $γ$). We also report possible transitions from one class to another ($χ\rightarrowρ,ρ\rightarrowκ$ via …
The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) currently hosts around 23 high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) of which most are Be/X-ray binaries. The LMC XMM-Newton survey provided follow-up observations of previously known X-ray sources that were likely HMXBs, as well as identifying new HMXB candidates. In total 19 candidate HMXBs were selected based on their X-ray hardness ratios. In this paper we present red and blue optical spectroscopy, obtained with SALT and the SAAO 1.9-m telescope, plus a timing analysis of the long term optical light curves from OGLE to confirm the nature of these candidates. We find …
We present a time-resolved X-ray spectral study of the high energy peaked blazar Mkn 421 using simultaneous broadband observations from the LAXPC and SXT instruments on-board AstroSat. The ~ 400 ksec long observation taken during 3-8 January, 2017 was divided into segments of 10 ksecs. Each segment was fitted using synchrotron emission from particles whose energy distribution was represented by a log-parabola model. We also considered particle energy distribution models where (i) the radiative cooling leads to a maximum energy (ξ max model), (ii) the system has energy dependent diffusion (EDD)…
New high resolution, optical spectroscopy of the high mass X-ray binary LMC X-3, shows the spectral type of the donor star changes with phase due to irradiation by the X-ray source. We find the spectral type is likely to be B5V, and only appears as B3V when viewing the heated side of the donor. Combining our measurements with those previously published, and taking into account the effects of X-ray irradiation, results in a value for the donor star radial velocity semi-amplitude of 256.7 +/- 4.9 km/s. We find the mass of the black hole lies in the range 9.5 - 13.6 solar masses.
The Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) Imager on board AstroSat is a hard X-ray imaging spectrometer operating in the energy range of 20 $-$ 100 keV. It also acts as an open hard X-ray monitor above 100 keV capable of detecting transient events like the Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs). Additionally, the instrument has the sensitivity to measure hard X-ray polarization in the energy range of 100 $-$ 400 keV for bright on-axis sources like Crab and Cygnus X-1 and bright GRBs. As hard X-ray instruments like CZTI are sensitive to cosmic rays in addition to X-rays, it is required to identify and remove particle …
We present the results obtained from detailed spectral and timing studies of extra-galactic black hole X-ray binaries LMC~X--1 and LMC~X--3, using simultaneous observations with {\it Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR)} and {\it Neil Gehrels Swift} observatories. The combined spectra in the $0.5-30$~keV energy range, obtained between 2014 and 2019, are investigated for both sources. We do not find any noticeable variability in $0.5-30$~keV light curves, with $0.1-10$~Hz fractional rms estimated to be $<2$\%. No evidence of quasi-periodic oscillations is found in the power density sp…
Classical nova outburst has been suggested for a number of extragalactic symbiotic stars, but in none of the systems has it been proven. In this work we study the nature of one of these systems, LMC S154. We gathered archival photometric observations in order to determine the timescales and nature of variability in this system. Additionally we carried out photometric and spectroscopic monitoring of the system and fitted synthetic spectra to the observations. Carbon abundance in the photosphere of the red giant is significantly higher than that derived for the nebula, which confirms pollution o…
