1T$^\prime$-MoS$_2$ exhibits valley-spin-polarized tilted Dirac bands in the presence of external vertical electric field and undergoes a topological phase transition between the topological insulator and band insulator around the critical value of the electric field. Within the linear response theory, we theoretically investigate the anisotropic longitudinal optical conductivities of tilted Dirac bands in both undoped and doped 1T$^\prime$-MoS$_2$, including the effects of the vertical electric field. The influence of the spin-orbit coupling gap, band tilting, and vertical electric field on the optical conductivities of tilted Dirac bands is revealed. A theoretical scheme for probing the topological phase transition in 1T$^\prime$-MoS$_2$ via exotic behaviors of longitudinal optical conductivities is proposed. The results for 1T$^\prime$-MoS$_2$ are expected to be qualitatively valid for other monolayer tilted gapped Dirac materials, such as $α$-SnS$_2$, TaCoTe$_2$, and TaIrTe$_4$, due to the similarity in their band structures.

We study the conductivity of two-dimensional graphene-type materials with tilted cones as well as their three-dimensional Weyl counterparts and show that a covariant quantum Boltzmann equation is capable of providing an accurate description of these materials' transport properties. The validity of the covariant Boltzmann approach is corroborated by calculations within the Kubo formula. We find a strong anisotropy in the conductivities parallel and perpendicular to the tilt direction upon increase of the tilt parameter $η$, which can be interpreted as the boost parameter of a Lorentz transforma…
The electronic and optical conductivities for anisotropic tilted Dirac semimetals are calculated using the Kubo formula. As in graphene, it is shown that the minimal conductivity is sensitive to the order in which the temperature, frequency and scattering limits are taken. Both intraband and interband scattering are found to be direction dependent. In the high frequency and low temperature limit, the conductivities do not depend on frequency and are weighted by the anisotropy in such a way that the geometrical mean $\sqrt{σ_{xx}σ_{yy}}$ of the conductivity is the same as in graphene. This resu…
We present a detail theoretical study of the Drude weight and optical conductivity of 8-$Pmmn$ borophene having tilted anisotropic Dirac cones. We provide exact analytical expressions of $xx$ and $yy$ components of the Drude weight as well as maximum optical conductivity. We also obtain exact analytical expressions of the minimum energy ($ε_1$) required to trigger the optical transitions and energy ($ε_2$) needed to attain maximum optical conductivity. We find that the Drude weight and optical conductivity are highly anisotropic as a consequence of the anisotropic Dirac cone. The optical condu…
Lifshitz transition is a kind of topological phase transition in which the Fermi surface is reconstructed. It can occur in the two-dimensional (2D) tilted Dirac materials when the energy bands change between the type-I phase ($0<t<1$) and the type-II phase ($t>1$) through the type-III phase ($t=1$), where different tilts are parametrized by the values of $t$. In order to characterize the Lifshitz transition therein, we theoretically investigate the longitudinal optical conductivities (LOCs) in type-I, type-II, and type-III Dirac materials within linear response theory. In the undoped case, the…
We explore the effect of valley-contrasting gaps in the optical response of two-dimensional anisotropic tilted Dirac systems. We study the spectrum of intraband and interband transitions through the joint density of states (JDOS), the optical conductivity tensor, and the Drude spectral weight. The energy bands present an indirect gap in each valley. Thus a new possibility opens for the position of the Fermi level (an ``indirect zone''), and for the momentum space for allowed transitions. The JDOS near each gap displays a set of three van Hove singularities which are in contrast to the case of …
Majorana Josephson junctions in nanowire systems exhibit a pseudo-$4π$ period current-phase relation in the clean limit. In this work, we study how this current-phase relation responds to a tilted magnetic field in a disordered Majorana Josephson junction within the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach. We show that the tilted magnetic field induces a $ϕ_0$ phase shift to the current-phase relation. Most importantly, we find that this $ϕ_0$-junction behavior is robust even in the presence of disorders.
In the presence of an external vertical electric field and strain, it is evident that 1T${^\prime}$-MoS$_2$ exhibits tilted Dirac bands which are valley-spin-polarized. Additionally, this material experiences a topological phase change between a topological insulator and band insulator for a critical value of the electric field. Using linear response theory, we calculated the polarization function which is in turn employed to obtain the dielectric function. This latter quantity is subsequently utilized in calculations to determine the plasmons dispersion relation, their decay rate and impurity…
We theoretically study the influence of impurity scattering on the electric and thermal transport of borophane layer, a two-dimensional anisotropic Dirac semi-metal with two tilted and anisotropic Dirac cones. In a systematic framework, we have calculated exactly the electrical conductivity and thermoelectric coefficients of borophane in the presence of the short-range, long-range charged impurity and the short-range electro-magnetic (SREM) scatterers, by using the exact solution of the Boltzmann transport equation within the linear-response theory. Contrary to the large electron-hole asymmetr…
Polymorph of 8-Pmmn borophene exhibits anisotropic tilted Dirac cones. In this work, we explore the consequences of the tilted Dirac cones in magnetotransport properties of a periodically modulated borophene. We evaluate modulation induced diffusive conductivity by using linear response theory in low temperature regime. The application of weak modulation (electric/magnetic or both) gives rise to the magnetic field dependent non-zero oscillatory drift velocity which causes Weiss oscillation in the longitudinal conductivity at low magnetic field. The Weiss oscillation is studied in presence of a…
We use time-dependent Hartree Fock approximation to study the collective mode spectra of nu=2 quantum Hall bilayers in tilted magnetic field allowing for charge imbalance as well as tunneling between the two layers. In a previous companion paper to this work, we studied the zero temperature global phase diagram of this system which was found to include a symmetric and ferromagnetic phases as well as a first order transition between two canted phases with spontaneously broken U(1) symmetry. We further found that this first order transition line ends in a quantum critical point within the canted…
The Floquet spectrum in an anisotropic tilted Dirac semimetal modulated by linearly polarized light is addressed through the solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for the two-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonian via the Floquet theorem. The time-dependent wave functions and the quasienergy spectrum of the two-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonian under the normal incidence of linearly polarized waves are obtained for an arbitrarily intense electromagnetic radiation. We applied a set of unitary transformations to reduce the Schrödinger equation to an ordinary second-order differential Hill equat…
The analytical expressions for both diagonal and off-diagonal ac and dc conductivities of graphene placed in an external magnetic field are derived. These conductivities exhibit rather unusual behavior as functions of frequency, chemical potential and applied field which is caused by the fact that the quasiparticle excitations in graphene are Dirac-like. One of the most striking effects observed in graphene is the odd integer quantum Hall effect. We argue that it is caused by the anomalous properties of the Dirac quasiparticles from the lowest Landau level. Other quantities such as Hall angle …
A semiclassical theory is developed and compared to experiments on the tunneling resonance spectrum for a quantum well in magnetic field tilted with respect to the tunneling direction. As the tilt angle is increased from zero the classical mechanics of an electron trapped within the well undergoes a smooth transition from integrable to chaotic dynamics. Perturbation theory is invalid for most of the regime of experimental interest, motivating a semiclassical treatment based on short periodic orbits within the well. In this paper we present a unified theory of all the periodic orbits within the…
We study the thermoelectric properties of monolayers of MoS$_{2}$ and other group-VI dichalcogenides under circularly polarized off-resonant light. Analytical expressions are derived for the Berry phase mediated magnetic moment, orbital magnetization, as well as thermal and Nernst conductivities. Tuning of the band gap by {\it off-resonant} light enhances the spin splitting in both the valence and conduction bands and, thus, leads to a dramatic improvement of the spin and valley thermoelectric properties.
The extraordinary electronic properties of Dirac materials, the two-dimensional partners of Weyl semimetals, arise from the linear crossings in their band structure. When the dispersion around the Dirac points is tilted, the emergence of intricate transport phenomena has been predicted, such as modified Klein tunnelling, intrinsic anomalous Hall effects and ferrimagnetism. However, Dirac materials are rare, particularly with tilted Dirac cones. Recently, artificial materials whose building blocks present orbital degrees of freedom have appeared as promising candidates for the engineering of ex…
We review the basic optical, electronic, optoelectronic, thermoelectric and mechanical properties of few-layer black phosphorus (BP), a layered semiconductor that can be exfoliated from bulk BP, the most stable allotrope of phosphorus. The distinguishing trait of BP is its highly anisotropic crystal structure, which leads to strong optical linear dichroism, elliptical plasmonics energy surfaces, anisotropic electronic and thermal conductivities and elasticity. We provide tutorial-like discussion of these phenomena and their theoretical models.
We study diffusive electron-electron interaction correction to conductivity by analyzing simultaneously $ρ_{xx}$ and $ρ_{xy}$ for disordered 2D electron systems in Si in tilted magnetic field. Tilting the field is shown to be a straightforward tool to disentangle spin and orbital effects. In particular, by changing the tilt angle we prove experimentally that in the field range $gμ_BB>k_BT$ the correction depends on modulus of magnetic field rather than on its direction, which is expected for a system with isotropic $g$-factor. In the high-field limit the correction behaves as $\ln (B)$, as exp…
Confined modes at the edge arbitrarily inclined with respect to optical axes of nonmagnetic anisotropic 2D materials are considered. By developing the exact Wiener-Hopf and approximated Fetter methods we studied edge modes dispersions, field and charge density distributions. The 2D layer is described by the Lorentz-type conductivities in one or both directions, which is realistic for natural anisotropic 2D materials and resonant hyperbolic metasurfaces. We demonstrate that, due to anisotropy, the edge mode exists only at wave vectors exceeding the nonzero threshold value if the edge is tilted …
In a recent experiment, Young et al. [Nature {\bf 505}, 528 (2014)] observed a metal to insulator transition as well as transport through helical edge states in monolayer graphene under a strong, tilted magnetic field. Under such conditions, the bulk is a magnetic insulator which can exhibit metallic conduction through helical edges. It was found that two-terminal conductance of the helical channels deviates from the expected quantized value at low-temperatures ($=e^2/h$ per edge, at zero temperature). Motivated by this observation, we study the effect of disorder on the conduction through the…
We construct the most generic Hamiltonian of the $8Pmmn$ structure of borophene sheet in presence of spin-orbit, as well as background electric and magnetic fields. In addition to spin and valley Hall effects, this structure offers a framework to conveniently manipulate the resulting "tilt" of the Dirac equation by applying appropriate electric fields. Therefore, the tilt can be made space-, as well as time-dependent. The border separating the low-field region with under-tilted Dirac fermions from the high-field region with over-tilted Dirac fermions will correspond to a black-hole horizon. In…
We measure the optical absorption spectra and optical conductivities of excitons and trions in monolayers of metal dichalcogenide MoS$_{2}$ and compare the results with theoretical models. Our results show that the Wannier-Mott model for excitons, with modifications to account for small exciton radii and large exciton relative wavefunction spread in momentum space, phase space blocking due to Pauli exclusion in doped materials, and wavevector dependent dielectric constant, gives results that agree well with experiments. The measured exciton optical absorption spectra are used to obtain experim…
We analytically calculate the intrinsic longitudinal and transverse optical conductivities of electronic systems which govern by a modified-Dirac fermion model Hamiltonian for materials beyond graphene such as monolayer MoS$_2$ and ultrathin film of the topological insulator. We analyze the effect of a topological term in the Hamiltonian on the optical conductivity and transmittance. We show that the optical response enhances in the non-trivial phase of the ultrathin film of the topological insulator and the optical Hall conductivity changes sign at transition from trivial to non-trivial phase…
Three-dimensional condensed matter incarnations of Weyl fermions generically have a tilted dispersion---in sharp contrast with their elusive high-energy relatives where a tilt is forbidden by Lorentz invariance, and with the low-energy excitations of two-dimensional graphene sheets where a tilt is forbidden by either crystalline or particle-hole symmetry. Very recently, a number of materials (MoTe$_2$, LaAlGe and WTe$_2$) have been identified as hosts of so-called type-II Weyl fermions whose dispersion is so strongly tilted that a Fermi surface is formed, whereby the Weyl node becomes a singul…
