We explore the effect of valley-contrasting gaps in the optical response of two-dimensional anisotropic tilted Dirac systems. We study the spectrum of intraband and interband transitions through the joint density of states (JDOS), the optical conductivity tensor, and the Drude spectral weight. The energy bands present an indirect gap in each valley. Thus a new possibility opens for the position of the Fermi level (an ``indirect zone''), and for the momentum space for allowed transitions. The JDOS near each gap displays a set of three van Hove singularities which are in contrast to the case of gapped graphene (an absorption edge only) or 8-$Pmmn$ borophene (two interband critical points due to the tilt). For the Fermi level lying in the gap, the JDOS shows the usual linear dependence on frequency, while when above an indirect zone it looks similar to the borophene case. These spectral characteristics determine the prominent structure of the optical conductivity. The longitudinal conductivity illustrates the strong anisotropy of the optical response. Similarly, the Drude weight is anisotropic and shows regions of nonlinear dependence on the Fermi level. The breaking of valley symmetry leads to a finite Hall response and associated optical properties. The anomalous and valley Hall conductivities present graphene-like behavior with characteristic modifications due to the indirect zones. Almost perfect circular dichroism can be achieved by tuning the exciting frequency with an appropriate Fermi level position. We also calculate the spectra of optical opacity and polarization rotation, which can reach magnitudes of tenths of radians in some cases. The spectral features of the calculated response properties are signatures of the simultaneous presence of tilt and mass and suggest optical ways to determine the formation of different gaps in such class of Dirac systems.
The notion of chiral symmetry for the conventional Dirac cone is generalized to include the tilted Dirac cones, where the generalized chiral operator turns out to be non-hermitian. It is shown that the generalized chiral symmetry generically protects the zero modes (n=0 Landau level) of the Dirac cone even when tilted. The present generalized symmetry is equivalent to the condition that the Dirac Hamiltonian is elliptic as a differential operator, which provides an explicit relevance to the index theorem.
We calculate conductance and noise for quantum transport at the nodal point for arbitrarily tilted and anisotropic Dirac or Weyl cones. Tilted and anisotropic dispersions are generic in absence of certain discrete symmetries, such as particle-hole and lattice point group symmetries. Whereas anisotropy affects the conductance g, but leaves the Fano factor F (the ratio of shot noise power and current) unchanged, a tilt affects both g and F. Since F is a universal number in many other situations, this finding is remarkable. We apply our general considerations to specific lattice models of straine…
The polarization function of electrons with the tilted Dirac cone found in organic conductors is studied using the tilted Weyl equation. The dynamical property is explored based on the analytical treatment of the particle-hole excitation. It is shown that the polarization function as the function of both the frequency and the momentum exhibits cusps and nonmonotonic structures. The polarization function depends not only on the magnitude but also the direction of the external momentum. These properties are characteristic of the tilted Dirac cone, and are contrast to the isotropic case of graphe…
1T$^\prime$-MoS$_2$ exhibits valley-spin-polarized tilted Dirac bands in the presence of external vertical electric field and undergoes a topological phase transition between the topological insulator and band insulator around the critical value of the electric field. Within the linear response theory, we theoretically investigate the anisotropic longitudinal optical conductivities of tilted Dirac bands in both undoped and doped 1T$^\prime$-MoS$_2$, including the effects of the vertical electric field. The influence of the spin-orbit coupling gap, band tilting, and vertical electric field on t…
Using first principles pseudopotential density functional theory calculations, we find that terminating zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNR) with monovalent alkali atoms at a reduced concentration has a dramatic impact on their properties. In particular, using sodium atoms for the saturation of ZGNR edges at half the concentration of edge-carbon atoms make it a one dimensional, perfect semimetal, where the valance and conduction bands meet at only a single, Dirac-like point. Unlike pristine graphene, the Dirac-"cones" of Na-ZGNR is not symmetric with respect to wave vector, but rather it is tilt…
We theoretically investigate the indirect signatures of the tilted anisotropic Dirac cones on Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange interaction in a two dimensional polymorph of boron atoms. Unlike the case of isotropic non-tilted Dirac material-graphene, here we observe that the tilting of the Dirac cones exhibits a significant impact on the RKKY exchange interaction in terms of the suppression of oscillation frequency. The reason can be attributed to the behavior of the Fermi level and the corresponding density of states with respect to the tilting parameter. The direct measurement o…
The interband optical absorption of linearly polarised light by two-dimensional (2D) semimetals hosting tilted and anisotropic Dirac cones in the bandstructure is analysed theoretically. Super-critically tilted (type-II) Dirac cones are characterised by an absorption that is highly dependent on the incident photon polarisation and frequency, and is tunable by changing the Fermi level with a back-gate voltage. Type-II Dirac cones exhibit open Fermi surfaces and large regions of the Brillouin zone where the valence and conduction bands sit either above or below the Fermi level. As a consequence,…
While it has been well-known that the chirality is an important symmetry for Dirac-fermion systems that gives rise to the zero-mode Landau level in graphene, here we explore whether this notion can be extended to tilted Dirac cones as encountered in organic metals. We have found that there exists a "generalized chiral symmetry" that encompasses the tilted Dirac cones, where a generalized chiral operator $γ$, satisfying $γ^{\dagger} H + Hγ=0$ for the Hamiltonian $H$, protects the zero mode. We can use this to show that the $n=0$ Landau level is delta-function-like (with no broadening) by extend…
The doubling of massless Dirac fermions on two-dimensional lattices is theoretically studied. It has been shown that the doubling of massless Dirac fermions on a lattice with broken chiral symmetry is topologically protected even when the Dirac cone is tilted. This is due to the generalized chiral symmetry defined for lattice systems, where such models can be generated by a deformation of the chiral-symmetric lattice models. The present paper shows for two-band lattice models that this is a general way to produce systems with the generalized chiral symmetry in that such systems can always be t…
The outstanding electronic properties of relativistic-like fermions have been extensively studied in solid state systems with isotropic linear dispersions such as graphene. Here, we show that 2D and 3D Dirac-Weyl (DW) materials exhibiting tilted energy dispersions could induce drastically different transport phenomena, compared to the non-tilted case. Indeed, the Klein tunneling of DW fermions of opposite chiralities is predicted to appear along two separated oblique directions. In addition, valley filtering and beam splitting effects are easily tailored by dopant engineering techniques while …
We study the effects of disorder and Coulomb interactions on the physics of three-dimensional type-I Weyl fermions with tilted and anisotropic dispersions in a renormalization group approach. To lowest non-trivial loop order we show that the tendency of the Coulomb interactions to restore the symmetry of the dispersion in the semimetallic region of the phase diagram dominates the stabilization of the tilt and anisotropy favored by weak disorder. We argue that the topology of the renormalization flow of the disorder and Coulomb couplings is essentially determined by gauge invariance, so that th…
As a new two-dimensional Dirac material, 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene hosts novel anisotropic and tilted massless Dirac fermions (MDFs) and has attracted increasing interest. However, the potential application of 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene in spin fields has not been explored. Here, we study the long-range RKKY interaction mediated by anisotropic and tilted MDFs in magnetically-doped 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene. To this aim, we carefully analyze the unique real-space propagation of anisotropic and tilted MDFs with noncolinear momenta and group velocities. As a result, we analytically demonstrate the…
Massless Dirac fermions occur as low-energy modes in several quasi-two-dimensional condensed matter systems such as graphene, the surface of bulk topological insulators, and in layered organic semiconductors. When the rotational symmetry in such systems is reduced either by an in-plane electric field or an intrinsic tilt of the Dirac cones, the allowed dipolar optical transitions evolve from a few selected transitions into a wide fan of interband transitions. We show that the Lorentz covariance of the low-energy carriers allows for a concise analysis of the emerging magneto-optical properties.…
Polymorph of 8-Pmmn borophene exhibits anisotropic tilted Dirac cones. In this work, we explore the consequences of the tilted Dirac cones in magnetotransport properties of a periodically modulated borophene. We evaluate modulation induced diffusive conductivity by using linear response theory in low temperature regime. The application of weak modulation (electric/magnetic or both) gives rise to the magnetic field dependent non-zero oscillatory drift velocity which causes Weiss oscillation in the longitudinal conductivity at low magnetic field. The Weiss oscillation is studied in presence of a…
We calculate the energy spectrum of a Dirac double layer, where each layer has the Dirac electronic dispersion, in the presence of a tilted magnetic field and small interlayer tunneling. We show that the energy splitting between the Landau levels has an oscillatory dependence on the in-plane magnetic field and vanishes at a series of special tilt angles of the magnetic field. Using a semiclassical analysis, we show that these special tilt angles are determined by the Berry phase of the Dirac Hamiltonian. The interlayer tunneling conductance also exhibits an oscillatory dependence on the magnet…
We study the collective modes of a low-energy continuum model of the quasi-two-dimensional electron liquid in a layer of the organic compound $α-$(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ in a perpendicular magnetic field. As testified by zero magnetic field transport experiments and \textit{ab initio} theory, this material hosts both massless and massive low-energy carriers, the former being described by tilted and anisotropic Dirac cones. The polarizability of these cones is anisotropic, and two sets of magnetoplasmon modes occur between any two cyclotron resonances. We show that the tilt of the cones causes a un…
We determine the antisymmetric current-current response for a pair of (type I) tilted Weyl cones with opposite chirality. We find that the dynamical chiral magnetic effect depends on the magnitude of the tilt and on the angle between the tilting direction and the wave vector of the magnetic field. Additionally, the chiral magnetic effect is shown to be closely related to the presence of an intrinsic anomalous Hall effect with a current perpendicular to the tilting direction and the electric field. We investigate the nonanalytic long-wavelength limit of the corresponding transport coefficients.
We explore topological transitions in the type of propagation of surface electromagnetic modes in massive anisotropic tilted Dirac systems. The presence of tilting and mass gives rise to an indirect band gap that strongly modifies the joint density of states compared to the gapless system. New van Hove singularities appear, and the interplay between intra and interband transitions leads to an anisotropic optical conductivity with imaginary parts acquiring opposite signs in orthogonal directions, opening the possibility of having hyperbolic propagation of plasmons. Isofrequency contours and low…
The magnetoresistance components $ρ_{xx}$ and $ρ_{xy}$ were measured in two p-Si/SiGe/Si quantum wells that have an anisotropic g-factor in a tilted magnetic field as a function of temperature, field and tilt angle. Activation energy measurements demonstrate the existence of a ferromagnetic-paramagnetic (F-P) transition for a sample with a hole density of $p$=2$\times10^{11}$\,cm$^{-2}$. This transition is due to crossing of the 0$\uparrow$ and 1$\downarrow$ Landau levels. However, in another sample, with $p$=7.2$\times10^{10}$\,cm$^{-2}$, the 0$\uparrow$ and 1$\downarrow$ Landau levels coinci…
We introduce the notion of a band-inverted, topological semimetal in two-dimensional nonsymmorphic crystals. This notion is materialized in the monolayers of MTe$_2$ (M $=$ W, Mo) if spin-orbit coupling is neglected. We characterize the Dirac band touching topologically by the Wilson loop of the non-Abelian Berry gauge field. An additional feature of the Dirac cone in monolayer MTe$_2$ is that it tilts over in a Lifshitz transition to produce electron and hole pockets, a type-II Dirac cone. These pockets, together with the pseudospin structure of the Dirac electrons, suggest a unified, topolog…
The Floquet spectrum in an anisotropic tilted Dirac semimetal modulated by linearly polarized light is addressed through the solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for the two-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonian via the Floquet theorem. The time-dependent wave functions and the quasienergy spectrum of the two-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonian under the normal incidence of linearly polarized waves are obtained for an arbitrarily intense electromagnetic radiation. We applied a set of unitary transformations to reduce the Schrödinger equation to an ordinary second-order differential Hill equat…
Magnetoresistivity $ρ_{xx}$ and $ρ_{xy}$ and the acoustoelectronic effects are measured in $p$-Si/SiGe/Si with an impurity concentration $p$ = 2 $\times $ 10$^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the temperature range 0.3-2.0 K and an tilted magnetic field up to 18 T. The dependence of the effective $g$-factor on the angle of magnetic field tilt $θ$ to the normal to the plane of a two dimensional $p$-Si/SiGe/Si channel is determined. A first order ferromagnet-paramagnet phase transition is observed in the magnetic fields corresponding to a filling factor $ν$ = 2 at $θ\approx $ 59$^\textrm{o}$-60$^\textrm{o}$.
Anomalously sharp (delta-function-like) $n=0$ Landau level in the presence of disorder is usually considered to be a manifestation of the massless Dirac fermions in magnetic fields. This property persists even when the Dirac cone is tilted, which has been shown by Kawarabayashi et al. [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 83}, 153414 (2011)] to be a consequence of a "generalized chiral symmetry". Here we pose a question whether this property will be washed out when the tilted Dirac fermion becomes massive. Surprisingly, the levels persist to be delta-function-like, although the mass term that splits $n=0$ Landau…
We analyze the quasienergy-spectrum and the valence to conduction-band transition probabilities of a tilted anisotropic Dirac material subject to linearly and circularly polarized electromagnetic fields. The quasienergy-spectrum is numerically calculated from the monodromy matrix of the Schrödinger equation via the Floquet theorem for arbitrarily intense electromagnetic fields. To asses the valence to conduction-band transition times we deduced a Rabi-like formula in the rotating wave approximation. In the strong-field regime the spectrum as a function of the momentum components divides into t…

The extraordinary electronic properties of Dirac materials, the two-dimensional partners of Weyl semimetals, arise from the linear crossings in their band structure. When the dispersion around the Dirac points is tilted, the emergence of intricate transport phenomena has been predicted, such as modified Klein tunnelling, intrinsic anomalous Hall effects and ferrimagnetism. However, Dirac materials are rare, particularly with tilted Dirac cones. Recently, artificial materials whose building blocks present orbital degrees of freedom have appeared as promising candidates for the engineering of ex…
Surface plasmons, which allow extreme confinement of light, suffer from high intrinsic electronic losses. It has been shown that stimulated emission of electrons can transfer energy to plasmons and compensate for the high intrinsic losses. To-date, these realizations have relied on introducing an external gain media coupled to the surface plasmon. Here, we propose that plasmons in two-dimensional materials with closely located electron and hole Fermi pockets can experience gain, when an electrical current bias is applied along the displaced electron-hole pockets, without the need for an extern…
Lifshitz transition is a kind of topological phase transition in which the Fermi surface is reconstructed. It can occur in the two-dimensional (2D) tilted Dirac materials when the energy bands change between the type-I phase ($0<t<1$) and the type-II phase ($t>1$) through the type-III phase ($t=1$), where different tilts are parametrized by the values of $t$. In order to characterize the Lifshitz transition therein, we theoretically investigate the longitudinal optical conductivities (LOCs) in type-I, type-II, and type-III Dirac materials within linear response theory. In the undoped case, the…
We have investigated the influence of an increasing in-plane magnetic field on the states at half-filling of Landau levels ($ν$ = 11/2, 9/2, 7/2, and 5/2) of a two-dimensional electron system. In the electrically anisotropic phase at $ν$ = 9/2 and 11/2 an in-plane magnetic field of $\sim$ 1-2 T overcomes its initial pinning to the crystal lattice and {\it reorient} this phase. In the initially isotropic phases at $ν$ = 5/2 and 7/2 an in-plane magnetic field {\it induces} a strong electrical anisotropy. In all cases, for high in-plane fields, the high resistance axis is parallel to the directio…

We investigate a longitudinal conductivity of a two-dimensional relativistic electron gas with a tilted Dirac cone in magnetic field. It is demonstrated that the conductivity behaves differently in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the tilting of the cone. At high magnetic fields the conductivity at non-zero Landau levels in the direction perpendicular to the tilting modifies non-trivially, in contrast to the parallel case. At zero temperature the crossover of the conductivity at the Dirac point from high to low magnetic field is studied numerically. It is found that that the tiltin…
In the presence of an external vertical electric field and strain, it is evident that 1T${^\prime}$-MoS$_2$ exhibits tilted Dirac bands which are valley-spin-polarized. Additionally, this material experiences a topological phase change between a topological insulator and band insulator for a critical value of the electric field. Using linear response theory, we calculated the polarization function which is in turn employed to obtain the dielectric function. This latter quantity is subsequently utilized in calculations to determine the plasmons dispersion relation, their decay rate and impurity…
The electronic and optical conductivities for anisotropic tilted Dirac semimetals are calculated using the Kubo formula. As in graphene, it is shown that the minimal conductivity is sensitive to the order in which the temperature, frequency and scattering limits are taken. Both intraband and interband scattering are found to be direction dependent. In the high frequency and low temperature limit, the conductivities do not depend on frequency and are weighted by the anisotropy in such a way that the geometrical mean $\sqrt{σ_{xx}σ_{yy}}$ of the conductivity is the same as in graphene. This resu…
We predict the existence of a novel long-lived gapless plasmon mode in a type-II Dirac semimetal (DSM). This gapless mode arises from the out-of-phase oscillations of the density fluctuations in the electron and the hole pockets of a type-II DSM. It originates beyond a critical wave-vector along the direction of the tilt axis, owing to the momentum separation of the electron and hole pockets. A similar out-of-phase plasmon mode arises in other multi-component charged fluids as well, but generally it is Landau damped and lies within the particle-hole continuum. In the case of a type-II DSM, the…
We present a detail theoretical study of the Drude weight and optical conductivity of 8-$Pmmn$ borophene having tilted anisotropic Dirac cones. We provide exact analytical expressions of $xx$ and $yy$ components of the Drude weight as well as maximum optical conductivity. We also obtain exact analytical expressions of the minimum energy ($ε_1$) required to trigger the optical transitions and energy ($ε_2$) needed to attain maximum optical conductivity. We find that the Drude weight and optical conductivity are highly anisotropic as a consequence of the anisotropic Dirac cone. The optical condu…
Transverse electric (TE) modes can not propagate through the conducting solids. This is because the continuum of particle-hole excitations of conductors contaminates with the TE mode and dampes it out. But in solids hosting tilted Dirac cone (TDC) that admit a description in terms of a modified Minkowski spacetime, the new spacetime structure remedies this issue and therefore a tilted Dirac cone material (TDM) supports the propagation of an undamped TE mode which is sustained by density fluctuations. The resulting TE mode propagates at fermionic velocities which strongly confines the mode to t…
The rich structure of solid state physics provides us with Dirac materials the effective theory of which enjoys the Lorentz symmetry. In non-symmorphic lattices, the Lorentz symmetry will be deformed in a way that the null energy-momentum vectors will correspond to on-shell condition for tilted Dirac cone dispersion. In this sense, tilted Dirac/Weyl materials can be viewed as solid state systems where the effective spacetime is non-Minkowski. In this work, we show that the polarization tensor for tilted Dirac cone systems acquires a covariant from only when the spacetime is considered to be an…
The effect of the Dirac cone tilt of anisotropic two-dimensional materials on the time evolution of coherent electron states in the presence of electric and magnetic fields is studied. We propose a canonical transformation that maps the anisotropic Dirac-Weyl Hamiltonian with tilted Dirac cones to an effective and isotropic Dirac Hamiltonian under these fields. In this way, the well-known Landau-level spectra and wave functions allow calculating the Wigner matrix representation of Landau and coherent states. We found a valley dependency in the behavior of the Wigner function for both Landau an…
We study the dynamic chiral magnetic conductivity (DCMC) and natural optical activity in an inversion-broken tilted Weyl semimetal (WSM). Starting from the Kubo formula, we derive the analytical expressions for the DCMC for two different directions of the incident electromagnetic wave. We show that the angle of rotation of the plane of polarization of the transmitted wave exhibits remarkable anisotropic behavior and is larger along the tilt direction. This striking anisotropy of DCMC which results in anisotropic optical activity and rotary power, can be experimentally observed as a topological…
