The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is considered as a promising new technology for reconfiguring wireless communication environments. To acquire the channel information accurately and efficiently, we only turn on a fraction of all the RIS elements, formulate a sub-sampled RIS channel, and design a deep learning based scheme to extrapolate the full channel information from the partial one. Specifically, inspired by the ordinary differential equation (ODE), we set up connections between different data layers in a convolutional neural network (CNN) and improve its structure. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate that our proposed ODE-based CNN structure can achieve faster convergence speed and better solution than the cascaded CNN.
The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) with low hardware cost and energy consumption has been recognized as a potential technique for future 6G communications to enhance coverage and capacity. To achieve this goal, accurate channel state information (CSI) in RIS assisted wireless communication system is essential for the joint beamforming at the base station (BS) and the RIS. However, channel estimation is challenging, since a large number of passive RIS elements cannot transmit, receive, or process signals. In the first part of this invited paper, we provide an overview of the fundament…
The use of satellites to provide ubiquitous coverage and connectivity for densely deployed Internet of Things (IoT) networks is expected to be a reality in emerging 6G networks. Yet the low battery capacity of IoT nodes constitutes a problem for their direct connectivity to satellites, which are located at altitudes of up to 2000 km. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture involving the use of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) units to mitigate the path loss associated with long transmission distances. These RIS units can be placed on satellite reflectarrays, and, when used in br…
Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is one of the promising techniques for 6G wireless communications, and recently has also been shown to be able to improve secure communications. Our aim is to minimize the transmit power subject to the constrai…
This letter investigates the ergodic secrecy rate (ESR) of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted communication system in the presence of discrete phase shifts and multiple eavesdroppers (Eves). In particular, a closed-form approximation of the ESR is derived for both non-colluding and colluding Eves. The analytical results are shown to be accurate when the number of reflecting elements of the RIS $N$ is large. Asymptotic analysis is provided to investigate the impact of $N$ on the ESR, and it is proved that the ESR scales with $\log_2 N$ for both non-colluding and colluding Eves.…

This work investigates the impact of the ever-present electromagnetic interference (EMI) on the achievable secrecy performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided communication systems. We characterize the end-to-end RIS channel by considering key practical aspects such as spatial correlation, transmit beamforming vector, phase-shift noise, the coexistence of direct and indirect channels, and the presence of strong/mild EMI on the receiver sides. We show that the effect of EMI on secrecy performance strongly depends on the ability of the eavesdropper to cancel such interference; …
The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is useful to effectively improve the coverage and data rate of end-to-end communications. In contrast to the well-studied coverage-extension use case, in this paper, multiple RIS panels are introduced, aiming to enhance the data rate of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channels in presence of insufficient scattering. Specifically, via the operator-valued free probability theory, the asymptotic mutual information of the large-dimensional RIS-assisted MIMO channel is obtained under the Rician fading with Weichselberger's correlation structure, in prese…

Channel reciprocity greatly facilitates downlink precoding in time-division duplexing (TDD) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications without the need for channel state information (CSI) feedback. Recently, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) emerge as a promising technology to enhance the performance of future wireless networks. However, since the artificial electromagnetic characteristics of RISs do not strictly follow the normal laws of nature, it brings up a question: does the channel reciprocity hold in RIS-assisted TDD wireless networks? After briefly reviewing the reci…

In addition, we obtain the optimal phase-shift design at both RISs in closed-form for the considered channel and phase-noise models. Numerical results validate the analytical expressions, and highlight the effects of different system parameters on the achievable rate. O…
With the depletion of spectrum, wireless communication systems turn to exploit large antenna arrays to achieve the degree of freedom in space domain, such as millimeter wave massive multi-input multioutput (MIMO), reconfigurable intelligent surface assisted communications and cell-free massive MIMO. In these systems, how to acquire accurate channel state information (CSI) is difficult and becomes a bottleneck of the communication links. In this article, we introduce the concept of channel extrapolation that relies on a small portion of channel parameters to infer the remaining channel paramete…

To this end, we propose the Fox's H model as a unified fading distribution for a large number of widely used generalized fading channels. In particular, we derive a unified analytical framework for computing the outage probability and for estimating the achievable diversity order of RIS-aided systems in the presence of phase shifts that either are optimally …
The performance of cooperative ambient backscatter communications (CABC) can be enhanced by employing reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to assist backscatter transmitters. Since the RIS power consumption is a non-negligible issue, we consider a RIS assisted CABC system where the RIS with energy harvesting circuit can not only reflect signal but also harvest wireless energy. We study a transmission design problem to minimize the RIS power consumption with the quality of service constraints for both active and backscatter transmissions. The optimization problem is a mixed-integer non-conv…

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted radio is considered as an enabling technology with great potential for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless communications standard. The achievable secrecy rate (ASR) is one of the most fundamental metrics to evaluate the capability of facilitating secure communication for RIS-assisted systems. However, the definition of ASR is based on Shannon's information theory, which generally requires long codewords and thus fails to quantify the secrecy of emerging delay-critical services. Motivated by this, in this paper we investigate the problem of maxi…
This paper investigates two performance metrics, namely ergodic capacity and symbol error rate, of mmWave communication system assisted by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). First, we derive a new unified closed-form formula for the average symbol error probability of generalised M-QAM/M-PSK signalling over this mmWave link. We then obtain new closed-form expressions for the ergodic capacity with and without channel s…

In this paper, we study the achievable rate region of 1-layer rate splitting (RS) in the presence of hardware impairment (HWI) and improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) for a single-cell reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted broadcast channel (BC). We assume that the transceivers may suffer from an imbalance in in-band and quadrature signals, which is known as I/Q imbalance (IQI). The received signal and noise can be improper when there exists IQI. Therefore, we employ IGS to compensate for IQI as well as to manage interference. Our results show that RS and RIS can significantly enlarg…
Channel estimation in reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communication systems is challenging as pilots cannot be decoded at or transmitted from a RIS with only passive elements. We assume an angular model for the line-of-sight channel between the user equipment (UE) and the RIS and between the RIS and the base station (BS) with no direct path between the UE and BS. In this letter, assuming that we can compute the RIS-BS channel (up to a complex path gain) from their known locations, we first discuss the ambiguity involved in estimating the …
Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a revolutionary technology for sixth-generation (6G) networks owing to its ability to manipulate wireless environments. As a frequency-selective device, RIS can only effectively shape the propagation of signals within a certain frequency band. Due to this frequency-selective property, the deployment of RIS in cellular networks will introduce a complicated base station (BS)-RIS-user association issue since adjacent BSs operate at different frequency bands. In this paper, with the consideration of the frequency-selective characteristics of RIS, we aim …
The sum-rate performance of simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) assisted full-duplex (FD) communication systems is investigated. The reflection and transmission coefficients of STAR-RIS elements are optimized for the energy splitting and mode switching protocols to maximize the weighted sum rate of the system. The underlying optimization problems are non-convex, and hence, the successive convex approximation technique has been employed to develop efficient algorithms to obtain sub-optimal solutions. Thereby, the maximum average weighted sum ra…

In this paper, we investigate a simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) assisting a massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) system. In particular, we derive a closed-form expression for the coverage probability of a STAR-RIS assisted mMIMO system while accounting for correlated fading and phase-shift errors. Notably, the phase configuration takes place at every several coherence intervals by optimizing the coverage probability since the latter depends on statistical channel state information (CSI) in terms of large-scale statistics. As a re…
