We present a data-driven analysis of the resonant S-wave $ππ\to ππ$ and $πK \to πK$ reactions using the partial-wave dispersion relation. The contributions from the left-hand cuts are accounted for using the Taylor expansion in a suitably constructed conformal variable. The fits are performed to experimental and lattice data as well as Roy analyses. For the $ππ$ scattering we present both a single- and coupled-channel analysis by including additionally the $K\bar{K}$ channel. For the latter the central result is the Omnès matrix, which is consistent with the most recent Roy and Roy-Steiner results on $ππ\to ππ$ and $ππ\to K\bar{K}$, respectively. By the analytic continuation to the complex plane, we found poles associated with the lightest scalar resonances $σ/f_0(500)$, $f_0(980)$, and $κ/K_0^*(700)$ for the physical pion mass value and in the case of $σ/f_0(500)$, $κ/K_0^*(700)$ also for unphysical pion mass values.
We have evaluated forward dispersion relations for scattering amplitudes that follow from direct fits to several sets of pion-pion scattering experiments, together with the precise K decay results, and high to energy data. We find that some of the most commonly used experimental sets, as well as some recent theoretical analyses based on Roy equations, do not satisfy these constraints by several standard deviations. Finally, we provide a consistent pion-pion amplitude by improving a global fit to data with these dispersion relations.
We present a dispersion theoretical analysis of recent date from electron-proton scattering. This allows for a high-precision extraction of the electric and magnetic radius of the proton, $r_E = (0.839\pm 0.002{}^{+0.002}_{-0.003})$~fm and $r_M = (0.846\pm 0.001{}^{+0.001}_{-0.005})$~fm, where the first error refers to the statistical type estimated from the bootstrap method, and the second one refers to the systematic uncertainty related to the underlying spectral functions.
In this talk we discuss the relevance of dispersive methods and their different applications to obtain simple but rigorous parameterizations of pion-pion and kaon-pion scattering. We show as an example our latest dispersive analysis of $πK$ scattering, where we provide simple parameterizations of data satisfying Forward Dispersion Relations up to 1.6 GeV.
We show how the new precise data on kaon decays together with forward dispersion relations, sum rules and once- and twice-subtracted Roy's equations allow for a precise determination of the sigma meson pole position. We present a comparison and a study of the different sources of uncertainties when using either once- or twice-subtracted Roy's equations to analyze the data. Finally we present a preliminary determination of the sigma pole from the constrained dispersive data analysis.
Dispersive approaches provide model independent description of meson-meson scattering. We first review here the use of dispersion relations to obtain a model independent unitarization of Chiral Perturbation Theory amplitudes, that establish the existence of light scalar mesons and whose leading 1/N_c behavior suggest they ahve a non q-qbar dominant component. We also review the forward dispersion relation checks on conflicting experimental data and the resulting very precise pion-pion scattering scattering amplitudes.
In a series of papers we have applied several sum rules and forward dispersion relations, to pion-pion scattering. We have found that some widely used data sets fail to satisfy these constraints, and we have provided an amplitude that describes data consistently with the dispersive tests. Furthermore, we noted that the input and precision claimed in a Roy equation analysis by Colangelo, Gasser and Leutwyler, lead to several mismatches with some sum rules. Subsequently, Caprini, Colangelo, Gasser and Leutwyler claimed that our Regge parametrization was incorrect. We collect here the answers to …
We calculate the combination $2a_0^{(0)}-5a_0^{(2)}$ (the Olsson sum rule) and the scattering lengths and effective ranges $a_1$, $a_2^{(I)}$ and $b_1$, $b_2^{(I)}$ dispersively (with the Froissart--Gribov representation) using, at low energy, the phase shifts for $ππ$ scattering obtained by Colangelo, Gasser and Leutwyler (CGL) from the Roy equations and chiral perturbation theory, plus experiment and Regge behaviour at high energy, or directly, using the CGL parameters for $a$s and $b$s. We find mismatch, both among the CGL phases themselves and with the results obtained from the pion form f…
In this thesis, I present dispersive treatments of two hadronic processes: the semileptonic kaon decay $K_{\ell4}$ and hadronic light-by-light scattering. The $K_{\ell4}$ decay is one of the best sources of information on some of the parameters of chiral perturbation theory. The dispersion relation for $K_{\ell4}$ provides a resummation of $ππ$- and $Kπ$-rescattering effects. In contrast to a pure chiral treatment, it reproduces the observed curvature of one of the form factors. The matching of the dispersion relation to the chiral representation of the form factors allows the extraction of th…
The dispersive representation of the virtual Compton forward scattering amplitude has been recently reexamined in connection with the evaluation of the Cottingham formula for the proton-neutron electromagnetic mass difference. The most difficult part of the analysis is related to one of the invariant amplitudes, denoted as $T_1(ν, Q^2)$, which requires a subtraction in the standard dispersion relation with respect to the energy $ν$ at fixed photon momentum squared $q^2=-Q^2$. We propose an alternative dispersive framework, which implements analyticity and unitarity by combining the Cauchy inte…
Previous representations of pion pair production amplitudes by two real photons at low energy, which combine dispersion theoretical constraints with elastic unitariy, chiral symmetry and soft photon constraints are generalized to the case where one photon is virtual. The constructed amplitudes display explicitly the dependence on the $ππ$ phase-shifts, on pion form factors and on pion polarizabilities. They apply both for space-like and time-like virtualities despite the apparent overlap of the left and right-hand cuts, by implementing a definition of resonance exchange amplitudes complying wi…
In this proceeding, we illustrate the applicability of a new parameterization of the S-wave amplitude on the example of the $ππ\to ππ$ and $πK \to πK $ lattice data ($m_π\sim 240$ MeV) from the HadSpec collaboration. The applied parameterization follows from the dispersive representation for the inverse scattering amplitude. The left-hand cut contribution is parametrized by the series in a suitably constructed conformal variable. The crucial input in the analysis is the Adler zero, whose position we extracted from the chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order with the uncertainties p…
Combining large $N_C$ techniques and partial wave dispersion theory to analyze the $ππ$ scattering, without relying on any explicit resonance lagrangian, some interesting results are derived: (a) a general KSRF relation including the scalar meson contribution; (b) a new relation between resonance couplings, with which we have made an intensive analysis in several specific models; (c) low energy constants in chiral perturbation theory related with $ππ$ scattering in terms of the mass and decay width of resonances.
We evaluate the pion-nucleon intermediate-state contribution to the two-photon exchange (TPE) correction in the elastic electron-nucleon scattering within a dispersive framework. We calculate the contribution from all $πN$ partial waves using the MAID parametrization. We provide the corresponding TPE correction to the unpolarized $e p$ scattering cross section in the region of low momentum transfer $ Q^2 \lesssim 0.064~\mathrm{GeV}^2$, where no analytical continuation into the unphysical region of the TPE scattering amplitudes is required. We compare our result in the forward angular region wi…
We present a data-driven analysis of the S-wave $ππ\to ππ\,(I=0,2)$ and $πK \to πK\,(I=1/2, 3/2)$ reactions using the partial-wave dispersion relation. The contributions from the left-hand cuts are parametrized using the expansion in a suitably constructed conformal variable, which accounts for its analytical structure. The partial-wave dispersion relation is solved numerically using the $N/D$ method. The fits to the experimental data supplemented with the constraints from chiral perturbation theory at threshold and Adler zero give the results consistent with Roy-like (Roy-Steiner) analyses. F…
We examine the two-photon exchange corrections to elastic electron-proton scattering within a dispersive approach, including contributions from both Nucleon and Delta intermediate states. The dispersive analysis avoids off-shell uncertainties inherent in traditional approaches based on direct evaluation of loop diagrams, and guarantees the correct unitary behavior in the high energy limit. Using empirical information on the electromagnetic nucleon elastic and N-Delta transition form factors, we compute the two-photon exchange corrections both algebraically and numerically. Results are compared…
A dispersion relation formalism for the virtual Compton scattering (VCS) reaction on the proton is presented, which for the first time allows a dispersive evaluation of 4 generalized polarizabilities at a four-momentum transfer $Q^2 \leq$ 0.5 GeV$^2$. The dispersive integrals are calculated using a state-of-the-art pion photo- and electroproduction analysis. The dispersion formalism provides a new tool to analyze VCS experiments above pion threshold, thus increasing the sensitivity to the generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon.
If new resonances of the electroweak symmetry breaking sector (longitudinal-gauge and Higgs) bosons are found in the 1-3 TeV region, the right tool to assess their properties and confront experimental data in a largely model-independent yet simple manner is Unitarized Effective Theory. Its ingredients are: 1) custodial symmetry and the Equivalence Theorem, that allow to approximate W_L and Z_L by an isospin-triplet of Goldstone bosons omega^a in the 1-TeV region. 2) The effective coupling of a generic, approximately massless scalar-isoscalar h to those Goldstone bosons, and the chiral Lagrangi…
We discuss the use of dispersion relations for the evaluation of the pseudoscalar contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We point out that, in the absence of experimental data, reconstruction of light-by-light scattering amplitudes from their absorptive parts is ambiguous and requires additional theoretical input. The need for an additional input makes dispersive computations of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to g-2 akin to phenomenological models, in spite of pretense to the contrary. In particular, we argue that the recent proposal [1], based on the dispers…
We consider the $ππ$ scattering amplitude obtained by Colangelo, Gasser and Leutwyler (CGL), using dispersion relations and chiral perturbation theory to two loops. We point out that the input used by CGL for energies above 1.42 GeV is incompatible with a number of experimental results. Moreover, the error they adscribe to the $δ_0^{(0)}$ phase at 0.8 GeV, an important part of their input, is much underestimated, and its central value is probably displaced. Then, we compare CGL results with direct fits to experimental $ππ$ data; the outcome of this test is mismatch of the CGL amplitude, for se…
In this work, we present different representations of Khuri-Treiman equation, the advantage and disadvantage of each representations are discussed. Using a toy model for scattering amplitude, we study the sensitivity of solution of KT equation to the left hand cut of this toy model and to the different approximate methods. At last, we briefly discuss Watson's theorem when three particles in final states are involved.
The NA48/2 collaboration has shown clear experimental evidence for a cusp in the data for K -> pi pi^0 pi^0. This effect can be used to extract information on the pi-pi scattering lengths. We address this issue using a two-loop dispersive construction of pi pi -> pi pi and K -> pi pi pi amplitudes in the presence of isospin breaking.
We evaluate the two-photon exchange correction to the elastic electron-proton scattering cross section within a dispersive framework. Besides the elastic contribution, we account for all $πN$ intermediate state contributions using the phenomenological MAID fit as an input. We develop a novel method for the analytical continuation of the two-photon exchange amplitudes into the unphysical region and generalize our previous work to the momentum transfer region $ 0.064~\mathrm{GeV}^2 \lesssim Q^2 \lesssim 1~\mathrm{GeV}^2$. We compare our results with recent OLYMPUS, CLAS and VEPP-3 data as well a…
Dispersive corrections to the total cross section for high-energy scattering from a heavy nucleus are calculated using a matrix model, based on the triple-Pomeron behavior of diffractive scattering from a single nucleon, for the cross section operator connecting different states of the projectile nucleon . Energy-dependent effects due to the decrease in longitudinal momentum transfers and the opening of more channels with increasing energy are included. The three leading terms in an expansion in the number of inelastic transitions are evaluated and compared to exact results for the model in th…
Based on dispersion theory, we present a formalism for a model-independent evaluation of the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. In particular, we comment on the definition of the pion pole in this framework and provide a master formula that relates the effect from pi pi intermediate states to the partial waves for the process gamma^* gamma^* --> pi pi. All contributions are expressed in terms of on-shell form factors and scattering amplitudes, and as such amenable to an experimental determination.
We present a dispersive representation of the D-term form factor for hard exclusive reactions, using unsubtracted $t$-channel dispersion relations. The $t$-channel unitarity relation is saturated with the contribution of two-pion intermediate states, using the two-pion distributions amplitude for the $γ^*γ\rightarrow ππ$ subprocess and reconstructing the $ππ\rightarrow N\bar N$ subprocess from available information on pion-nucleon partial-wave helicity amplitudes. Results for the D-term form factor as function of $t$ as well as at $t=0$ are discussed in comparison with available model predicti…
We present and numerically implement a computational method to construct relativistic scattering amplitudes that obey analyticity, crossing, elastic and inelastic unitarity in three and four spacetime dimensions. The algorithm is based on the Mandelstam representation of the amplitude and iterations of unitarity. The input for the iterative procedure is given by the multi-particle double spectral density, the S-wave inelasticity, and the value of the amplitude at the crossing-symmetric point. The output, obtained at the fixed point of the iteration of unitarity, is a nonperturbative scattering…
We present a theoretical study of the $γγ^{*} \to π^+π^-, π^0π^0$ processes from the threshold through the $f_2(1270)$ region in the $ππ$ invariant mass. We adopt the Omnès representation in order to account for rescattering effects in both s- and d-partial waves. For the description of the $f_0(980)$ resonance, we implement a coupled-channel unitarity. The constructed amplitudes serve as an essential framework to interpret the current experimental two-photon fusion program at BESIII. They also provide an important input for the dispersive analyses of the hadronic light-by-light scattering con…
In this work we provide a dispersive analysis of $ππ\rightarrow K\bar{K}$ scattering. For this purpose we present a set of partial-wave hyperbolic dispersion relations using a family of hyperbolas that maximizes the applicability range of the hyperbolic dispersive representation, which we have extended up to 1.47 GeV. We then use these equations first to test simple fits to different and often conflicting data sets, also showing that some of these data and some popular parameterizations of these waves fail to satisfy the dispersive analysis. Our main result is obtained after imposing these new…
We show how the Regge trajectory of a resonance can be obtained from its pole in a scattering process and analytic constraints in the complex angular momentum plane. The method is suited for resonances that dominate an elastic scattering amplitude. In particular, from the rho(770) resonance pole in pion-pion scattering, we obtain its linear Regge trajectory, characteristic of ordinary quark-antiquark states. In contrast, the f0(500) pole -the sigma meson- which dominates scalar isoscalar pion-pion scattering, yields a non-linear trajectory with a much smaller slope at the f0(500) mass. Convers…
The hadronic contribution to the eight forward amplitudes of light-by-light scattering ($γ^*γ^*\to γ^*γ^*$) is computed in lattice QCD. Via dispersive sum rules, the amplitudes are compared to a model of the $γ^*γ^*\to {\rm hadrons}$ cross sections in which the fusion process is described by hadronic resonances. Our results thus provide an important test for the model estimates of hadronic light-by-light scattering in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_μ^{\rm HLbL}$. Using simple parametrizations of the resonance $M\to γ^*γ^*$ transition form factors, we determine the corresponding …
We discuss the simultaneous dispersive analyses of $πK\to πK$ and $ππ\to K \bar{K}$ scattering data and the $κ/K^*_0(700)$ resonance. The unprecedented statistics of present and future Hadron Experiments, modern Lattice QCD calculations, and the wealth of new states and decays, require such precise and model-independent analyses to describe final state interactions. We review the existing and often conflicting data and explain in detail the derivation of the relevant dispersion relations, maximizing their applicability range. Next, we review and extend the caveats on some data, showing their i…
We report here our results on how to obtain the Regge trajectory of a resonance from its pole in a scattering process by imposing analytic constraints in the complex angular momentum plane. The method, suited for resonances that dominate an elastic scattering amplitude, has been applied to the ρ(770) and the f_0(500) resonances. Whereas for the former we obtain a linear Regge trajectory, characteristic of ordinary quark-antiquark states, for the latter we find a non-linear trajectory with a much smaller slope at the resonance mass. This provides a strong indication of the non-ordinary nature o…

We present a new general dispersive formalism for evaluating the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. In the suggested approach, this correction is related to the imaginary part of the muon's electromagnetic vertex function. The latter may be directly related to measurable hadronic processes by means of unitarity and analyticity. As a test we apply the introduced formalism to the case of meson pole exchanges and find agreement with the direct two-loop calculation.
We present a coupled system of integral equations for the pi pi --> Nbar N and Kbar K --> Nbar N S-waves derived from Roy-Steiner equations for pion-nucleon scattering. We discuss the solution of the corresponding two-channel Muskhelishvili-Omnes problem and apply the results to a dispersive analysis of the scalar form factor of the nucleon fully including Kbar K intermediate states. In particular, we determine the corrections Delta_sigma and Delta_D, which are needed for the extraction of the pion-nucleon sigma term from pi N scattering, and show that the difference Delta_D - Delta_sigma=(-1.…
Based on the recently proposed Roy-Steiner equations for pion-nucleon scattering, we derive a system of coupled integral equations for the pi pi --> N-bar N and K-bar K --> N-bar N S-waves. These equations take the form of a two-channel Muskhelishvili-Omnes problem, whose solution in the presence of a finite matching point is discussed. We use these results to update the dispersive analysis of the scalar form factor of the nucleon fully including K-bar K intermediate states. In particular, we determine the correction Delta_sigma=sigma(2M_pi^2)-sigma_{pi N}, which is needed for the extraction o…

We extract the proton charge radius from the elastic form factor (FF) data using a novel theoretical framework combining chiral effective field theory and dispersion analysis. Complex analyticity in the momentum transfer correlates the behavior of the spacelike FF at finite $Q^2$ with the derivative at $Q^2 = 0$. The FF calculated in the predictive theory contains the radius as a free parameter. We determine its value by comparing the predictions with a descriptive global fit of the spacelike FF data, taking into account the theoretical and experimental uncertainties. Our method allows us to u…
A cartoon is drawn how and why to define and extract the energy dependence of the nucleon polarisabilities from low energy Compton scattering on the nucleon. The information dynamical polarisabilities contain about the low energy degrees of freedom inside the nucleon is extracted by comparing the chiral effective field theory calculation with dispersion theory results. Dynamical polarisabilities do not contain more or less information than the corresponding Compton scattering amplitudes, but as with any multipole decomposition, the facts are more readily accessible and easier to interpret. Str…
We analyze the pion transition form factor using dispersion theory. We calculate the singly-virtual form factor in the time-like region based on data for the $e^+e^-\to 3π$ cross section, generalizing previous studies on $ω,ϕ\to3π$ decays and $γπ\toππ$ scattering, and verify our result by comparing to $e^+e^-\toπ^0γ$ data. We perform the analytic continuation to the space-like region, predicting the poorly-constrained space-like transition form factor below 1 GeV, and extract the slope of the form factor at vanishing momentum transfer $a_π=(30.7\pm0.6)\times 10^{-3}$. We derive the dispersive …
We consider the contribution of scalar resonances to hadronic light-by-light scattering in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. While the $f_0(500)$ has already been addressed in previous work using dispersion relations, heavier scalar resonances have only been estimated in hadronic models so far. Here, we compare an implementation of the $f_0(980)$ resonance in terms of the coupled-channel $S$-waves for $γ^*γ^*\to ππ/\bar K K$ to a narrow-width approximation, which indicates $a_μ^{\text{HLbL}}[f_0(980)]=-0.2(2)\times 10^{-11}$. With a similar estimate for the $a_0(980)$, the combined ef…
Two-photon exchange (TPE) contributions to elastic electron-proton scattering in the forward regime are considered. The imaginary part of TPE amplitude in these kinematics is related to the DIS nucleon structure functions. The real part of the TPE amplitude is obtained from the imaginary part by means of dispersion relations. We demonstrate that the dispersion integrals for the relevant elastic $ep$-scattering amplitude converge and do not need subtraction. This allows us to make clean prediction for the real part of the TPE amplitude at forward angles. We furthermore compare $e^+p$ and $e^-p$…
In this paper we make a further step towards a dispersive description of the hadronic light-by-light (HLbL) tensor, which should ultimately lead to a data-driven evaluation of its contribution to $(g-2)_μ$. We first provide a Lorentz decomposition of the HLbL tensor performed according to the general recipe by Bardeen, Tung, and Tarrach, generalizing and extending our previous approach, which was constructed in terms of a basis of helicity amplitudes. Such a tensor decomposition has several advantages: the role of gauge invariance and crossing symmetry becomes fully transparent; the scalar coe…
We provide global parameterizations of $ππ$ scattering $S0$ and $P$ partial waves up to roughly 2 GeV for phenomenological use. These parameterizations describe the output and uncertainties of previous partial-wave dispersive analyses of $ππ$, both in the real axis up to 1.12 GeV and in the complex plane within their applicability region, while also fulfilling forward dispersion relations up to 1.43 GeV. Above that energy we just describe the available experimental data. Moreover, the analytic continuations of these global parameterizations also describe accurately the dispersive determination…

We study the three-pion decays of the lightest isoscalar vector mesons, omega and phi, in a dispersive framework that allows for a consistent description of final-state interactions between all three pions. Our results are solely dependent on the phenomenological input for the pion-pion P-wave scattering phase shift. We predict the Dalitz plot distributions for both decays and compare our findings to recent measurements of the phi --> 3pi Dalitz plot by the KLOE and CMD-2 collaborations. Dalitz plot parameters for future precision measurements of omega --> 3pi are predicted. We also calculate …
We present a dispersive analysis of the three-pion decays of the lightest isoscalar vector mesons. The framework allows for a consistent implementation of final-state interactions among all three pions, with the results being solely dependent on the pion-pion P-wave scattering phase shift. We compare our results with the very precise KLOE measurement of phi --> 3pi. The omega/phi --> 3pi partial-wave amplitude serves as input to a dispersive analysis of the omega/phi --> pi0 gamma* transition form factor. We compare to data for omega --> pi0 mu+ mu- by the NA60 collaboration and motivate an ex…
