T Tauri has long been the prototypical young pre-main-sequence star. However, it has now been decomposed into a triple system with a complex disk and outflow geometry. We aim to measure the brightness of all three components of the T Tauri system (T Tau N, T Tau Sa, T Tau Sb) in the mid-infrared in order to obtain photometry around the $\sim 9.7~μm$ silicate feature. This allows us to study their variability and to investigate the distribution of dust and the geometry of circumstellar and circumbinary disks in this complex system. We observe T Tauri with the VLT/VISIR-NEAR instrument. With kernel phase interferometry post-processing of the data, and using the astrometric positions of all three components from VLT/SPHERE, we measure the three components' individual brightnesses (including the southern binary at an angular separation down to $\sim 0.2~λ/D$) and obtain their photometry. In order to validate our methods, we simulate and recover mock data of the T Tauri system using the observed reference point-spread function of HD 27639. We find that T Tau N is rather stable and shows weak silicate emission, while T Tau Sa is highly variable and shows prominent silicate absorption. T Tau Sb became significantly fainter compared to data from 2004 and 2006, suggesting increased extinction by dust. The precision of our photometry is limited by systematic errors, which is consistent with previous studies using kernel phase interferometry. Our results confirm the complex scenario of misaligned disks in the T Tauri system that had been observed previously, and they are in agreement with the recently observed dimming of T Tau Sb in the near-infrared. Our mid-infrared photometry supports the interpretation that T Tau Sb has moved behind the dense region of the Sa-Sb circumbinary disk on its tight orbit around Sa, therefore suffering increased extinction.
Multicolour broadband photometry and flux calibrated low resolution spectroscopy between 2014 and 2018 are used to investigate the behaviour of the highly variable Herbig Ae star RR Tauri. As the star experienced a deep Algol-like fade by a factor of over 10 in flux, we found the change in spectral continuum to be grey while Hα emission flux halved. We also observed the (V-Rc) colour index reddening as the star faded suggesting emission detectable in the Rc-band but beyond our spectral response. We confirm that the circumstellar reddening of RR Tau is consistent with an extinction ratio Rv = 5…
The study of contemporaneous variations of the continuum flux and emission lines is of great importance to understand the different astrophysical processes at work in T Tauri stars. In this paper we present the results of a simultaneous $BVRI$ and H$α$ photometric monitoring, contemporaneous to medium-resolution spectroscopy of six T Tauri stars in the Taurus-Auriga star forming region. We have characterized the H$α$ photometric system using synthetic templates and the contemporaneous spectra of the targets. We show that we can achieve a precision corresponding to 2$-$3 Å in the H$α$ equivalen…
This paper presents optical ($ugri$H$α$)-infrared ($JHK$s,3.6--8.0$μ$m) photometry, and $Gaia$ astrometry of 55 Classical T-Tauri stars (CTTS) in the star-forming region Sh 2-012, and it's central cluster NGC 6383. The sample was identified based on photometric H$α$ emission line widths, and has a median age of 2.8$\pm$1.6 Myr, with a mass range between 0.3-1 $M_{\odot}$. 94% of CTTS with near-infrared cross-matches fall on the near-infrared T-Tauri locus, with all stars having mid-infrared photometry exhibiting evidence for accreting circumstellar discs. CTTS are found concentrated around the…
We present a study of the long-term optical variability of young T Tauri stars using previously unpublished data from the SuperWASP project. Other publicly available photometry from NSVS and the NASA K2 mission were used to check and supplement our results. Our sample includes twenty weak-lined T Tauri stars in the Taurus-Auriga star-forming region. We have performed a period search on the long time-series photometry and derived the mean periods of stars in our sample. We have found new periods for the stars V1334 Tau (HD 283782) and V1349 Tau (HD 31281) without any estimation of the period in…
We present VRIJHK photometry of the KH 15D T Tauri binary system for the 2015/16 and 2016/17 observing seasons. For the first time in the modern (CCD) era we are seeing Star B fully emerge from behind the trailing edge of the precessing circumbinary ring during each apastron passage. We are, therefore, able to measure its luminosity and color. Decades of photometry on the system now allow us to infer the effective temperature, radius, mass and age of each binary component. We find our values to be in good agreement with previous studies, including archival photographic photometry from the era …
We present a large-scale study of stellar rotation for T Tauri stars in the Orion Star-Forming Complex. We use the projected rotational velocity ($v\sin(i)$) estimations reported by the APOGEE-2 collaboration as well as individual masses and ages derived from the position of the stars in the HR diagram, considering Gaia-EDR3 parallaxes and photometry plus diverse evolutionary models. We find an empirical trend for $v\sin(i)$ decreasing with age for low-mass stars ($0.4 M_{\odot} < M_{\ast} < 1.2 M_{\odot}$). Our results support the existence of a mechanism linking $v\sin(i)$ to the presence of…
Long-term homogeneous photometry for 35 classical T Tauri stars (cTTS) in the Taurus-Auriga star-forming region (Tau-Aur SFR) has been analyzed. Reliable effective temperatures, interstellar extinctions, luminosities, radii, masses, and ages have been determined for these cTTS. The physical parameters and evolutionary status of 35 cTTS from this work and 34 weak-line T Tauri stars (wTTS) from previous studies have been compared. The luminosities, radii, and rotation periods of low-mass (0.3-1.1 Msun) cTTS are shown to be, on average, greater than those of low-mass wTTS, in good agreement with …
T Tauri remains an enigmatic triple star for which neither the evolutionary state of the stars themselves, nor the geometry of the complex outflow system is completely understood. Eight-meter class telescopes equipped with state-of-the-art adaptive optics provide the spatial resolution necessary to trace tangential motion of features over a timescale of a few years, and they help to associate them with the different outflows. We used J-, H-, and K-band high-contrast coronagraphic imaging with VLT-SPHERE recorded between 2016 and 2018 to map reflection nebulosities and obtain high precision nea…
Accretion is one of the defining characteristics of classical T Tauri stars, fueled by the presence of a circumstellar disk comprised of dust and gas. Accretion produces a UV and optical excess, while re-radiated emission at the inner edge of the dust component of the disk produces a near-infrared (NIR) excess. The interplay between stars and their disks helps regulate protoplanetary disk evolution and dispersal, which is key to a full understanding of planet formation. To investigate the relations between NIR excess and optical excess in both single and binary stars, we used an archival sampl…
We scrutinize the red dwarf component in the eclipsing binary system V471 Tau in order to unravel relations between different activity layers from the stellar surface through the chromosphere up to the corona. We aim at studying how the magnetic dynamo in the late-type component is affected by the close white dwarf companion. We use space photometry, high resolution spectroscopy and X-ray observations from different space instruments to explore the main characteristics of magnetic activity. From K2 photomery we find that 5-10 per cent of the apparent surface of the red dwarf is covered by cool…
The distortions of absorption line profiles caused by photospheric brightness variations on the surfaces of cool, main-sequence stars can mimic or overwhelm radial velocity (RV) shifts due to the presence of exoplanets. The latest generation of precision RV spectrographs aims to detect velocity amplitudes $\lesssim 10$ cm s$^{-1}$, but requires mitigation of stellar signals. Statistical techniques are being developed to differentiate between Keplerian and activity-related velocity perturbations. Two important challenges, however, are the interpretability of the stellar activity component as RV…
The variability of young stellar objects is mostly driven by star-disk interactions. In long-term photometric monitoring of the accreting T Tauri star GI Tau, we detect extinction events with typical depths of $ΔV \sim 2.5$ mag that last for days-to-months and often appear to occur stochastically. In 2014 - 2015, extinctions that repeated with a quasi-period of 21 days over several months is the first empirical evidence of slow warps predicted from MHD simulations to form at a few stellar radii away from the central star. The reddening is consistent with $R_V=3.85\pm0.5$ and, along with an abs…
Aim: The focus of this paper is on two famous but still poorly understood RV Tauri stars: RV Tau and DF Cyg. We aim at confirming their suspected binary nature and deriving their orbital elements to investigate the impact of their orbits on the evolution of these systems. This research is embedded into a wider endeavour to study binary evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars. Method: The high amplitude pulsations were cleaned from the radial-velocity data to better constrain the orbital motion. We used Gaia DR2 parallaxes in combination with the SEDs to compute their luminosities which w…
We present \emph{Herschel} PACS observations of 8 Classical T Tauri Stars in the $\sim 7-10$ Myr old OB1a and the $\sim 4-5$ Myr old OB1b Orion sub-asscociations. Detailed modeling of the broadband spectral energy distributions, particularly the strong silicate emission at 10 $μ$m, shows that these objects are (pre)transitional disks with some amount of small optically thin dust inside their cavities, ranging from $\sim 4$ AU to $\sim 90$ AU in size. We analyzed \emph{Spitzer} IRS spectra for two objects in the sample: CVSO-107 and CVSO-109. The IRS spectrum of CVSO-107 indicates the presence …
Spatially resolved mid-infrared observations of the triple system T Tauri
We present results from adaptive optics imaging of the T Tauri triple system obtained at the Keck and Gemini Observatories in 2015-2019. We fit the orbital motion of T Tau Sb relative to Sa and model the astrometric motion of their center of mass relative to T Tau N. Using the distance measured by Gaia, we derived dynamical masses of M_Sa = 2.05 +/- 0.14 Msun and M_Sb = 0.43 +/- 0.06 Msun. The precision in the masses is expected to improve with continued observations that map the motion through a complete orbital period; this is particularly important as the system approaches periastron passag…
A multiwavelength observing campaign of the T Tauri star (TTS) GM Aur was undertaken in 2019 December that obtained Swift X-ray and NUV fluxes, HST NUV spectra, LCOGT ugri and TESS photometry, CHIRON Halpha spectra, ALMA 13CO and C18O line fluxes, and VLA 3 cm continuum fluxes taken contemporaneously over one month. The X-ray to optical observations were presented previously. Here we present the ALMA and VLA data and make comparisons to GM Aur's accretion and X-ray properties. We report no variability in the observed millimeter CO emission. Using disk chemistry models, we show that the magnitu…
The young T Tauri star WW Cha was recently proposed to be a close binary object with strong infrared and submillimeter excess associated with circum-system emission. This makes WW Cha a very interesting source for studying the influence of dynamical effects on circumstellar as well as circumbinary material. We derive the relative astrometric positions and flux ratios of the stellar companion in WW Cha from the interferometric model fitting of observations made with the VLTI instruments AMBER, PIONIER, and GRAVITY in the near-infrared from 2011 to 2020. For two epochs, the resulting uv-coverage…
We report results of a spectropolarimetric and photometric monitoring of the weak-line T Tauri star V410 Tau based on data collected mostly with SPIRou, the near-infrared (NIR) spectropolarimeter recently installed at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, as part of the SPIRou Legacy Survey large programme, and with TESS between October and December 2019. Using Zeeman-Doppler Imaging (ZDI), we obtained the first maps of photospheric brightness and large-scale magnetic field at the surface of this young star derived from NIR spectropolarimetric data. For the first time, ZDI is also simultaneously…
We seek to find the precursors of the Herbig Ae/Be stars in the solar vicinity within 500 pc from the Sun. We do this by creating an optically selected sample of intermediate mass T-Tauri stars (IMTT stars) here defined as stars of masses $1.5 M_{\odot}\leq M_* \leq 5 M_{\odot}$ and spectral type between F and K3, from literature. We use literature optical photometry (0.4-1.25$μ$m) and distances determined from Gaia DR2 parallax measurements together with Kurucz stellar model spectra to place the stars in a HR-diagram. With Siess evolutionary tracks we identify intermediate mass T-Tauri stars …
We present multi-epoch optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry and spectroscopy of the spectroscopic binary T Tauri star DQ Tau. The photometric monitoring, obtained using SMARTS ANDICAM, recovers the previously-seen correlation between optical flux and the 15.8-day binary orbital period, with blue flux peaks occurring close to most observed periastron passages. For the first time, we find an even more consistent correlation between orbital period and NIR brightness and color. The onset of pulse events in the NIR on average precedes those in the optical by a few days, with the rise usually …

We intend to study the distribution of disk sizes, variability, and the silicate dust mineralogy. Methods. Archival mid-infrared interferometric data from the …
Understanding discs in binary YSOs: detailed modelling of VV CrA
