We studied Ramanujan series $\sum_{q=1}^{\infty}G(q)c_q(a)$, where $c_q(a)$ is the well-known Ramanujan sum and the complex numbers $G(q)$, as $q\in$N, are the Ramanujan coefficients; of course, we mean, implicitly, that the series converges pointwise, in all natural $a$, as its partial sums $\sum_{q\le Q}G(q)c_q(a)$ converge in C, when $Q\to \infty$. Motivated by our recent study of infinite and finite Euler products for the Ramanujan series, in which we assumed $G$ multiplicative, we look at a kind of (partial) smooth summations. These are $\sum_{q\in (P)}G(q)c_q(a)$, where the indices $q$ in $(P)$ means that all prime factors $p$ of $q$ are up to $P$ (fixed); then, we pass to the limit over $P\to \infty$. Notice that this kind of partial sums over $P-$smooth numbers (i.e., in $(P)$, see the above) make up an infinite sum, themselves, $\forall P\in$P fixed, in general; however, our summands contain $c_q(a)$, that has a vertical limit, i.e. it's supported over indices $q\in$N for which the $p-$adic valuations of, resp., $q$ and $a$, namely $v_p(q)$, resp., $v_p(a)$ satisfy $v_p(q)\le v_p(a)+1$ and this is true $\forall p\le P$ ($P$'s fixed). In other words, $\forall G:$N $\rightarrow$ C, here, $\sum_{q\in (P)}G(q)c_q(a)$ is a finite sum, $\forall a\in $N, $\forall P\in $P fixed: we will call $\sum_{q=1}^{\infty}G(q)c_q(a)$ a 'smooth Ramanujan series' if and only if $\exists \lim_P \sum_{q\in (P)}G(q)c_q(a)\in $C, $\forall a\in $N. Notice a very important property : smooth Ramanujan series and Ramanujan series need not to be the same. We prove : smooth Ramanujan series converge under Wintner Assumption. (This is not necessarily true for Ramanujan series.) We apply this to correlations and to the Hardy--Littlewood "$2k-$Twin Primes" Conjecture.
In this short research note, we aim to establish an interesting extension of a summation due to Ramanujan. The result is derived with the help of an extension of Gauss's summation theorem available in the literature.
In this paper, we give some extensions for Ramanujan's circular summation formula with the mixed products of two Jacobi's theta functions. As some applications, we also obtain many interesting identities of Jacobi's theta functions.
Using Abel summation the paper proves a weak form of the Wiener-Khinchin formula for arithmetic functions with point-wise convergent Ramanujan-Fourier expansions. The main result is that the convolution of most arithmetic functions possessing an R-F expansion are Abel-summable to a result involving only the Ramanujan-Fourier coefficients of the R-F expansion(s).
We use a specialization of Ramanujan's ${}_1ψ_1$ summation to give a new proof of a recent formula of Hickerson and Mortenson which expands a special family of Hecke-type double sums in terms of Appell-Lerch sums and theta functions.
In this paper we obtain some new transformation formula for Ramanujan summation formula and also establish some eta-function identities. we also deduce a q-Gamma function identity, n q-integral and some interesting series representation.
In the sixth chapter of his notebooks Ramanujan introduced a method of summing divergent series which assigns to the series the value of the associated Euler-MacLaurin constant that arises by applying the Euler-MacLaurin summation formula to the partial sums of the series. This method is now called the Ramanujan summation process. In this paper we calculate the Ramanujan sum of the exponential generating functions $\sum_{n\geq 1}\log n e^{nz}$ and $\sum_{n\geq 1}H_n^{(j)} e^{-nz}$ where $H_n^{(j)}=\sum_{m=1}^n \frac{1}{m^j}$. We find a surprising relation between the two sums when $j=1$ from w…
This paper gives a short but reasonably comprehensive review of Ramanujan's {_1ψ_1} summation and its generalisations. It covers the history of Ramanujan's summation, simple applications to sums of squares and orthogonal polynomials, non-commutative generalisations, and generalisations to affine root systems.
The neglected Russian mathematician, N.~S.~Koshliakov, derived beautiful generalizations of the classical Abel--Plana summation formula through a setting arising from a boundary value problem in heat conduction. When we let the parameter $p$ in this setting tend to infinity, his formulas reduce to the classical Abel--Plana summation formula. Rigorous formulations and proofs of these summation formulas are given. In his notebooks, Ramanujan derived different analogues of the Abel--Plana summation formula. One particular example provides a vast new generalization of the classical transformation …
Lucy Slater used Bailey's $_6ψ_6$ summation formula to derive the Bailey pairs she used to construct her famous list of 130 identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type. In the present paper we apply the same techniques to Chu's $_{10}ψ_{10}$ generalization of Bailey's formula to produce quite general Bailey pairs. Slater's Bailey pairs are then recovered as special limiting cases of these more general pairs. In re-examining Slater's work, we find that her Bailey pairs are, for the most part, special cases of more general Bailey pairs containing one or more free parameters. Further, we also find ne…
Recently, $4$-regular partitions into distinct parts are connected with a family of overpartitions. In this paper, we provide a uniform extension of two relations due to Andrews for the two types of partitions. Such an extension is made possible with recourse to a new trivariate Rogers--Ramanujan type identity, which concerns a family of quadruple summations appearing as generating functions for the aforementioned overpartitions. More interestingly, the derivation of this Rogers--Ramanujan type identity is relevant to a certain well-poised basic hypergeometric series.
An elliptic $BC_n$ generalization of the classical two parameter Bailey Lemma is proved, and a basic one parameter $BC_n$ Bailey Lemma is obtained as a limiting case. Several summation and transformation formulas associated with the root system $BC_n$ are proved as applications, including a $_6ϕ_5$ summation formula, a generalized Watson transformation and an unspecialized Rogers--Selberg identity. The last identity is specialized to give an infinite family of multilateral Rogers--Selberg identities. Standard determinant evaluations are then used to compute $B_n$ and $D_n$ generalizations of t…
It is mathematical folklore that 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + ... = --1/12. This result is usually achieved using elaborate analytical methods, such as zeta function regularization or Ramanujan summation. However, in its notebooks, Ramanujan has also provided a very simple derivation which relied instead on algebraic manipulations. Recently, a video from Numberphile has presented a similar derivation of the result (provoking lots of discussions and debates about the meaning of such an equality). But this derivation, simple as it is, is usually considered as less rigorous than those using more elaborate ana…
All arithmetical functions $F$ satisfying Ramanujan Conjecture, i.e., $F(n)\ll_{\varepsilon}n^{\varepsilon}$, and with $Q-$smooth divisors, i.e., with Eratosthenes transform $F':=F\ast μ$ supported in $Q-$smooth numbers, have a kind of unique Ramanujan expansion; also, these Ramanujan coefficients decay very well to $0$ and have two explicit expressions (in the style of Carmichael and Wintner). This general result, then, is applied to the shift-Ramanujan expansions, i.e., the expansions for correlations with respect to the shift, whence the title.
In this paper, we introduce some explicit approximations for the summation $\sum_{k\leq n}Ω(k)$, where $Ω(k)$ is the total number of prime factors of $k$.
We continue the analysis of the elliptic part of the trace formula initiated in \cite{Altug:2015aa}. In that reference Poisson summation was applied to the elliptic part and the dominant term was analyzed. The main aim of this paper is to study the remaining terms after Poisson summation. We analyze the the Fourier transforms of (smoothed) orbital integrals and obtain exact asymptotic expansions. As an application we recover, using the Arthur-Selberg trace formula, Kuznetsov's result (cf. \cite{Kuznetsov:1980aa}) that the trace of the $p$th Hecke operator on cuspidal automorphic representation…
We introduce a method that is based on Fourier series expansions related to Jacobi elliptic functions and that we apply to determine new identities for evaluating hyperbolic infinite sums in terms of the complete elliptic integrals $K$ and $E$. We apply our method to determine generalizations of a family of $\text{sech}$-sums given by Ramanujan and generalizations of a family of $\text{csch}$-sums given by Zucker. Our method has the advantage of producing evaluations for hyperbolic sums with sign functions that have not previously appeared in the literature on hyperbolic sums. We apply our met…
General summation formulas have been proved to be very useful in analysis, number theory and other branches of mathematics. The Lipschitz summation formula is one of them. In this paper, we give its application by providing a new transformation formula which generalizes that of Ramanujan. Ramanujan's result, in turn, is a generalization of the modular transformation of Eisenstein series $E_k(z)$ on SL$_2(\mathbb{Z})$, where $z\to-1/z, z\in\mathbb{H}$. The proof of our result involves delicate analysis containing Cauchy Principal Value integrals. A simpler proof of a recent result of ours with …
We focus on three pages in Ramanujan's lost notebook, pages 336, 335, and 332, in decreasing order of attention. On page 336, Ramanujan proposes two identities, but the formulas are wrong -- each is vitiated by divergent series. We concentrate on only one of the two incorrect "identities", which may have been devised to attack the extended divisor problem. We prove here a corrected version of Ramanujan's claim, which contains the convergent series appearing in it. The convergent series in Ramanujan's faulty claim is similar to one used by G.F. Voronoi, G.H. Hardy, and others in their study of …
We study the function series $\sum_{n=1}^\infty ϕ^{2m+2} \text{cosch}^{2m+2}(nϕ/2)$, and similar series, for integers $m$ and complex $ϕ$. This hyperbolic series is linearly related to the Lambert series. The Lambert series is known to satisfy a functional equation which defines the Ramanujan polynomials. By using residue theorem (summation theorem) we find the functional equation satisfied by this hyperbolic series. The functional equation identifies a class of polynomials which can be seen as a generalization of the Ramanujan polynomials. These polynomials coincide with the asymptotic expans…
Euler--Maclaurin and Poisson analogues of the summations $\sum_{a < n \leq b} χ(n) f(n)$, $\sum_{a < n \leq b} d(n) f(n)$, $\sum_{a < n \leq b} d(n) χ(n) f(n)$ have been obtained in a unified manner, where $(χ(n))$ is a periodic complex sequence; $d(n)$ is the divisor function and $f(x)$ is a sufficiently smooth function on $[a,b]$. We also state a generalised Abel's summation formula, generalised Euler's summation formula and Euler's summation formula in several variables.
If $k$ is set equal to $a q$ in the definition of a WP Bailey pair, \[ β_{n}(a,k) = \sum_{j=0}^{n} \frac{(k/a)_{n-j}(k)_{n+j}}{(q)_{n-j}(aq)_{n+j}}α_{j}(a,k), \] this equation reduces to $β_{n}=\sum_{j=0}^{n}α_{j}$. This seemingly trivial relation connecting the $α_n$'s with the $β_n$'s has some interesting consequences, including several basic hypergeometric summation formulae, a connection to the Prouhet-Tarry-Escott problem, some new identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan-Slater type, some new expressions for false theta series as basic hypergeometric series, and new transformation formulae for…
We study the double character sum $\sum\limits_{\substack{m\leq X,\\m\odd}}\sum\limits_{\substack{n\leq Y,\\n\odd}}\leg mn$ and its smoothly weighted counterpart. An asymptotic formula with power saving error term was obtained by Conrey, Farmer and Soundararajan by applying the Poisson summation formula. The result is interesting, because the main term involves a non-smooth function. In this paper, we apply the inverse Mellin transform twice and study the resulting double integral that involves a double Dirichlet series. This method has two advantages -- it leads to a better error term, and th…
