A fractional colouring of a graph $G$ is a function that assigns a non-negative real value to all possible colour-classes of $G$ containing any vertex of $G$, such that the sum of these values is at least one for each vertex. The fractional chromatic number is the minimum sum of the values assigned by a fractional colouring over all possible such colourings of $G$. Introduced by Bosica and Tardif, fractional covers are an extension of fractional colourings whereby the real-valued function acts on all possible subgraphs of $G$ belonging to a given class of graphs. The fractional chromatic number turns out to be a special instance of the fractional cover number. In this work we investigate fractional covers acting on $(k+1)$-clique-free subgraphs of $G$ which, although sharing some similarities with fractional covers acting on $k$-colourable subgraphs of $G$, they exhibit some peculiarities. We first show that if a simple graph $G_2$ is a homomorphic image of a simple graph $G_1$, then the fractional cover number defined on the $(k+1)$-clique-free subgraphs of $G_1$ is bounded above by the corresponding number of $G_2$. We make use of this result to obtain bounds for the associated fractional cover number of graphs that are either $n$-colourable or $a\!\!:\!\!b$-colourable.
Helly's theorem is a classical result concerning the intersection patterns of convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Two important generalizations are the colorful version and the fractional version. Recently, Bárány et al. combined the two, obtaining a colorful fractional Helly theorem. In this paper, we give an improved version of their result.
A graph $G$ is called fractional $[a,b]$-covered if for every edge $e$ of $G$ there is a fractional $[a,b]$-factor with the indicator function $h$ such that $h(e)=1$. In this paper, we provide tight spectral radius conditions for graphs being fractional $[a,b]$-covered.
A graph $G$ is a fractional $(a,b,k)$-critical covered graph if $G-U$ is a fractional $[a,b]$-covered graph for every $U\subseteq V(G)$ with $|U|=k$, which is first defined by Zhou, Xu and Sun (S. Zhou, Y. Xu, Z. Sun, Degree conditions for fractional $(a,b,k)$-critical covered graphs, Information Processing Letters, DOI: 10.1016/j.ipl.2019.105838). Furthermore, they derived a degree condition for a graph to be a fractional $(a,b,k)$-critical covered graph. In this paper, we gain an independence number and connectivity condition for a graph to be a fractional $(a,b,k)$-critical covered graph an…
Rödl, Ruciński, and Szemerédi determined the minimum $(k-1)$-degree threshold for the existence of fractional perfect matchings in $k$-uniform hypergrahs, and Kühn, Osthus, and Townsend extended this result by asymptotically determining the $d$-degree threshold for the range $k-1>d\ge k/2$. In this note, we prove the following exact degree threshold: Let $k,d$ be positive integers with $k\ge 4$ and $k-1>d\geq k/2$, and let $n$ be any integer with $n\ge k^2$. Then any $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph with minimum $d$-degree $δ_d(H)>{n-d\choose k-d} -{n-d-(\lceil n/k\rceil-1)\choose k-d}$ conta…
For a graph $G$, the set of vertices in $G$ is denoted by $V(G)$, and the set of edges in $G$ is denoted by $E(G)$. A fractional $[a,b]$-factor of a graph $G$ is a function $h$ from $E(G)$ to $[0,1]$ satisfying $a\leq d_G^{h}(v)\leq b$ for every vertex $v$ of $G$, where $d_G^{h}(v)=\sum\limits_{e\in E(v)}{h(e)}$ and $E(v)=\{e=uv:u\in V(G)\}$. A graph $G$ is called fractional $[a,b]$-covered if $G$ contains a fractional $[a,b]$-factor $h$ with $h(e)=1$ for any edge $e$ of $G$. A graph $G$ is called fractional $(a,b,k)$-critical covered if $G-Q$ is fractional $[a,b]$-covered for any $Q\subseteq …
In this paper, we generalize fractional $q$-integrals by the method of $q$-difference equation. In addition, we deduce fractional Askey--Wilson integral, reversal type fractional Askey--Wilson integral and Ramanujan type fractional Askey--Wilson integral.
In a hypergraph with vertex set $V$ and edge set $E$, a real-valued function $f: V \to [0, 1]$ is a fractional transversal if $\sum_{v\in e} f(v) \ge 1$ for every edge $e \in E$. Its size is $|f| := \sum_{v \in V} f(v)$, and the fractional transversal number is the smallest possible $|f|$. We consider a game scenario where two players with opposite goals construct a fractional transversal incrementally, trying to minimize and maximize $|f|$, respectively. We prove that both players have strategies to achieve their common optimum, and they can reach their goals using rational weights.
The boxicity of a graph $G$ is the minimum non-negative integer $k$ such that $G$ can be isomorphic to the intersection graph of a family of boxes in Euclidean $k$-space, where a box in Euclidean $k$-space is the Cartesian product of $k$ closed intervals on the real line. In this note, we define the fractional boxicity of a graph as the optimum value of the linear relaxation of a covering problem with respect to boxicity, which gives a lower bound for its boxicity. We show that the fractional boxicity of a graph is at least the lower bounds for boxicity given by Adiga et al. in 2014. We also p…
A $d$-{\em interval} is a union of at most $d$ disjoint closed intervals on a fixed line. Tardos [Combinatorica 15 (1995), 123-134] and the second author [Disc. Comput. Geom. 18 (1997), 195-203] used topological tools to bound the transversal number $τ$ of a family $H$ of $d$-intervals in terms of $d$ and the matching number $ν$ of $H$. We investigate the weighted and fractional versions of this problem and prove upper bounds that are tight up to constant factors. We apply both the topological method and an approach of Alon [Disc. Comput. Geom. 19 (1998), 333-334]. For the use of the latter, w…
We introduce a new graph invariant that measures fractional covering of a graph by cuts. Besides being interesting in its own right, it is useful for study of homomorphisms and tension-continuous mappings. We study the relations with chromatic number, bipartite density, and other graph parameters. We find the value of our parameter for a family of graphs based on hypercubes. These graphs play for our parameter the role that circular cliques play for the circular chromatic number. The fact that the defined parameter attains on these graphs the `correct' value suggests that the definition is a n…
Fractional graph isomorphism is the linear relaxation of an integer programming formulation of graph isomorphism. It preserves some invariants of graphs, like degree sequences and equitable partitions, but it does not preserve others like connectivity, clique and independence numbers, chromatic number, vertex and edge cover numbers, matching number, domination and total domination numbers. In this work, we extend the concept of fractional graph isomorphism to hypergraphs, and give an alternative characterization, analogous to one of those that are known for graphs. With this new concept we pro…
A $k$-matching cover of a graph $G$ is a union of $k$ matchings of $G$ which covers $V(G)$. A matching cover of $G$ is optimal if it consists of the fewest matchings of $G$. In this paper, we present an algorithm for finding an optimal matching cover of a graph on $n$ vertices and $m$ edges in $O(nm)$ time. This algorithm corrects an error of Matching Cover Algorithm in (Xiumei Wang, Xiaoxin Song, Jinjiang Yuan, On matching cover of graphs, Math. Program. Ser. A (2014)147: 499-518).
In this note, we present a fractional version of Haemers' bound on the Shannon capacity of a graph, which is originally due to Blasiak. This bound is a common strengthening of both Haemers' bound and the fractional chromatic number of a graph. We show that this fractional version outperforms any bound on the Shannon capacity that could be attained through Haemers' bound. We show also that this bound is multiplicative, unlike Haemers' bound.
