We develop a semiclassical theory of laser oscillation into a chiral edge state of a topological photonic system endowed with a frequency-dependent gain. As an archetypal model of this physics, we consider a Harper-Hofstadter lattice embedding population-inverted two-level atoms as gain material. We show that a suitable design of the spatial distribution of gain and of its spectral shape provides flexible mode selection mechanisms that can stabilize single-mode lasing into an edge state. Implications of our results for recent experiments are outlined.
We demonstrate gain-switched fiber laser with bias pumping plays an important role in regulating chaotic relaxation spikes. Under certain conditions the profile of output pulse from gain-switched fiber laser can keep the same shape as that of pump pulse. Bias pumping technique may have significance in increasing output stable pulse energy in gain-switched fiber laser. Gain-switched fiber laser with bias pumping may be interesting for some applications in micro-processing and thin film removal.
We report on a gain-coefficient switched Alexandrite laser. An electro-optic modulator is used to switch between high and low gain states by making use of the polarization dependent gain of Alexandrite. In gain-coefficient switched mode, the laser produces 85 ns pulses with a pulse energy of 240 mJ at a repetition rate of 5 Hz.
The bias-pumped gain-switched fiber laser proposed by us is considered a novel pulsed fiber laser based on a new pulsing mechanism. With a certain signal power seeding, synchronization of temporal evolution can be kept between the output signal laser and the pump. The seed laser can be supplied conveniently by a CW pump power which is named bias pump power. A pulsed pump is responsible for shaping the output pulse. Stable pulsed lasers with tunable durations can be achieved under bias pump combined with pulsed pump. In addition, the temporal shape of output pulses can be controllable based on …
A transverse mode selective laser system with gain regulation by a digital micromirror device (DMD) is presented in this letter. The gain regulation in laser medium is adjusted by the switch of the patterns loaded on DMD. Structured pump beam patterns can be obtained after the reflection of the loaded patterns on DMD, and then it's defocused into a microchip laser medium by a short focal lens, so that the pump patterns can be transferred to the gain medium to regulate the gain distribution. Corresponding structured laser beams can be generated by this laser system. The laser beam pattern can b…
The beam quality factor M^2 for the fundamental LP01 mode of a step-index fiber is calculated in the presence of gain, in a closed form, as a function of the complex generalized V-number. It is shown that the M^2 value of a single-mode gain-guided fiber laser can be arbitrary large. The results are important for the interpretation of the beam quality measurements in recent experiments on single-mode gain-guided fiber lasers.
A broadband chaotic laser with a flat power spectrum extending up to 8.5GHz is achieved by injecting continuous wave laser light into a chaotic diode laser perturbed by fiber random grating induced distributed feedback, which forms a gain-coupled chaotic laser system. More than triple bandwidth enhancement is realized with appropriate frequency detuning between the master and slave lasers. Unlike normal chaotic lasers, the output from such a broadband chaotic laser is free from time-delay signature, which can be applied for practical real-time random number generations and will find useful app…
The gain recovery time of a heterogeneous active region terahertz quantum cascade laser is studied by terahertz-pump,i terahertz-probe spectroscopy. The investigated active region, which is based on a bound-to-continuum optical transition with an optical phonon assisted extraction, exhibits a gain recovery time in the range of 34$\,$-$\,$50$\,$ps dependent on the operation condition of the laser. The recovery time gets shorter for stronger pumping of the laser while the recovery dynamics slows down with increasing operation temperature. These results indicate the important role of the intracav…
We propose experimentally simplified schemes of an optically dispersive interface region between two coupled free electron lasers (FELs), aimed at achieving a much broader gain bandwidth than in a conventional FEL or a conventional optical klystron composed of two separated FELs. The proposed schemes can {\it universally} enhance the gain of FELs, regardless of their design when operated in the short pulsed regime.
We present detailed numerical simulations of the laser dynamics that describe optical frequency comb formation by injection-locking a gain-switched laser. The typical rate equations for semiconductor lasers including stochastic carrier recombination and spontaneous emission suffice to show the injection-locking behavior of gain switched lasers, and we show how the optical frequency comb evolves starting from the free-running state, right through the final injection- locked state. Unlike the locking of continuous wave lasers, we show that the locking range for gain switched lasers is considerab…
The collective and single-electron amplification regimes of a non-collinear free electron laser are analyzed within the framework of dispersion equations. The small-signal gain and the conditions for self-amplified excitations are found. The collective excitations in a free electron laser are shown to be favored by the non-collinear arrangement of the relativistic electrons and the laser wave. Implications for free-electron lasing without inversion are discussed.
We demonstrate an experimental approach to create dissipative solitons in a microcavity laser. In particular, we shape the spatial gain profile of a quasi-one-dimensional microcavity laser with a nonresonant, pulsed optical pump to create spatially localised structures, called gain-pinned dissipative solitons that exist due to the balance of gain and nonlinear losses and are confined to a diffraction-limited volume. The ultrafast formation dynamics and decay of the gain-pinned solitons are probed directly, showing that they are created on a picosecond timescale, orders of magnitude faster than…
We report on a methodology for the evaluation of the DC characteristics, small-signal frequency response and large-signal dynamic response of carrier and photon density responses in semiconductor laser diodes. A single mode laser is considered and described with a pair of rate equations containing a novel non-linear gain compensation term depending on a single parameter that can be chosen arbitrarily. This approach can be applied to any type of solid-state laser as long as it is described by a set of rate equations.
We report the observation of a coherent multimode instability in quantum cascade lasers (QCLs), which is driven by the same fundamental mechanism of Rabi oscillations as the elusive Risken-Nummedal-Graham-Haken (RNGH) instability predicted 40 years ago for ring lasers. The threshold of the observed instability is significantly lower than in the original RNGH instability, which we attribute to saturable-absorption nonlinearity in the laser. Coherent effects, which cannot be reproduced by standard laser rate equations, can play therefore a key role in the multimode dynamics of QCLs, and in laser…
We have demonstrated an ultrahigh-Q whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microsphere laser based on the evanescent-wave-coupled gain. Dye molecules outside the sphere near the equator were excited, resulting in WGM lasing in the lowest radial mode order. The loaded quality factor of the lasing WGM was 8(2)\times 10^9, the highest ever achieved in the microlaser.
We demonstrate a gain-switched thulium fiber laser that can be continuously tuned over 140 nm, while maintaining stable nanosecond single-pulse operation. To the best of our knowledge, this system represents the broadest tuning range for a gain-switched fiber laser. The system simplicity and wideband wavelength tunability combined with the ability to control the temporal characteristics of the gain-switched pulses mean this is a versatile source highly suited to a wide range of applications in the eye-safe region of the infrared, including spectroscopy, sensing and material processing, as well…
We investigate a unique type of zero-index medium with both gain and loss (ZIMGL), whose effective permittivity and permeability are purely imaginary and of opposite signs. We show analytically that, by using a slab of ZIM-GL with equal magnitude of loss and gain, coherent perfect absorber (CPA) and laser, i.e. the socalled CPA-laser, can be achieved simultaneously. CPA-laser has been found previously in parity-time (PT) symmetric systems. However, the underlying physics in a PT-symmetric system is distinct from that in a ZIM-GL. By designing a photonic crystal (PC) composed of core-shell rods…
The electrical polarization of the laser crystal by external electrical field can change significantly the output laser parameters such as wavelength of excitation and generation, spectral bandwidth, excitation and emission cross-sections, efficiency and so on. That can give new possibilities for wide control of these parameters, increase their range for existing lasers and create a new line of the laser devices. In this paper the direct impact of external electrical fields on the laser solid state gain media was estimated using as an example Ti:Sapphire crystal. It was demonstrated that metal…
We demonstrate passive harmonic mode-locking of a quantum well laser diode designed to support a discrete comb of Fabry-Perot modes. Spectral filtering of the mode spectrum was achieved using a non-periodic patterning of the cavity effective index. By selecting six modes spaced at twice the fundamental mode spacing, near-transform limited pulsed output with 2 ps pulse duration was obtained at a repetition rate of 100 GHz.
The diffuse reflectance (albedo) and transmittance of a Raman random gain medium are calculated via semi-analytic two-stream equations with power-dependent coefficients. The results show good agreement with the experimental data for barium nitrate powder. Both the Raman albedo AR and Raman transmittance TR diverge at a critical gain gc, interpreted as the threshold for diffusive Raman laser generation. However, the ratio TR/AR approaches a finite limiting value dependent on particle scattering albedo v and scattering asymmetry g. The dependence of the generation threshold on the scattering par…
We experimentally observed self-injection locking regime of the gain-switched laser to high-Q optical microresonator. We revealed that comb generated by the gain-switched laser experiences a dramatic reduce of comb teeth linewidths in this regime. We demonstrated the Lorentzian linewidth of the comb teeth of sub-kHz scale as narrow as for non-switched self-injection locked laser. Such setup allows generation of high-contrast electrically-tunable optical frequency combs with tunable comb line spacing in a wide range from 10 kHz up to 10 GHz. The characteristics of the generated combs were studi…
We discuss a class of lasing modes created by a spatially inhomogeneous gain profile. These lasing modes are "extra modes", in addition to, and very different from, conventional lasing modes, which arise from the passive cavity resonances. These new modes do not have high intensity across the entire gain region, but instead are localized at the gain boundary and throughout the gain-free region. They are surface modes, originating from the transmission resonances of the gain-free region. Using an S-matrix description we connect these surface modes to the lasing modes in PT-symmetric (balanced g…
We experimentally demonstrate ultrafast dynamic of generation of a strong 337-nm nitrogen laser by injecting an external seed pulse into a femtosecond laser filament pumped by a circularly polarized laser pulse. In the pump-probe scheme, it is revealed that the population inversion between the excited and ground states of N2 for the free-space 337-nm laser is firstly built up on the timescale of several picoseconds, followed by a relatively slow decay on the timescale of tens of picoseconds, depending on the nitrogen gas pressure. By measuring the intensities of 337-nm signal from nitrogen gas…
We present a novel laser mode-locking scheme and discuss its unusual properties and feasibility using a theoretical model. A large set of single-frequency continuous-wave lasers oscillate by amplification in spatially separated gain media. They are mutually phase-locked by nonlinear feedback from a common saturable absorber. As a result, ultra short pulses are generated. The new scheme offers three significant benefits: the light that is amplified in each medium is continuous wave, thereby avoiding issues related to group velocity dispersion and nonlinear effects that can perturb the pulse sha…
The gain properties of an oscillator strongly affect its behavior. When the gain is homogeneous, different modes compete for gain resources in a `winner takes all' manner, whereas with inhomogeneous gain, modes can coexist if they utilize different gain resources. We demonstrate precise control over the mode competition in a mode locked Ti:sapphire oscillator by manipulation and spectral shaping of the gain properties, thus steering the competition towards a desired, otherwise inaccessible, oscillation. Specifically, by adding a small amount of spectrally shaped inhomogeneous gain to the stand…
Stimulated emission in small-molecule organic films at a high dye concentration is generally hindered by fluorescence quenching, especially in the red region of the spectrum. Here we demonstrate the achievement of high net gains (up to 50 cm-1) around 640 nm in thermally evaporated non-doped films of 4-di(4'-tert-butylbiphenyl-4-yl)amino-4'-dicyanovinylbenzene, which makes this material suitable for green-light pumped single-mode organic lasers with low threshold and superior stability. Lasing effect is demonstrated in a DBR resonator configuration, as well as under the form of random lasing a…
We introduce modeling and simulation of the noise properties associated with types of modal oscillations induced by scaling the asymmetric gain suppression (AGS) in multimode semiconductor lasers. The study is based on numerical integration of a system of rate equations of 21-oscillating modes taking account of the self- and cross-modal gain suppression mechanisms. AGS is varied in terms of a pre-defined parameter, which is controlled by the linewidth enhancement factor and differential gain. Basing on intensive simulation of the mode dynamics, we present a mapping (AGS versus current) diagram…
Multi-wavelength fiber lasers have emerged as a promising light source for the application in wavelength division multiplexing communication, terahertz wave generation and optical sensing due to high efficiency and robustness. Lyot-filter emerges as a potential device for multi-wavelength generation application. However, because of the high birefringence of polarization maintaining fiber in Lyot-filter, it is difficult to generate broadband dual-wavelength or multi-wavelength mode-locked fiber laser by using common Lyot-filter. In this paper, for the first time, we propose an idea of using the…
Because surface plasmons can be confined below the diffraction limit, metallic lasers that support plasmonic modes can provide miniaturized sources of electromagnetic waves. Such devices often exploit a multilayer design, in which a semiconductor gain layer is placed near a metallic interface with a gap layer in between. However, despite many experimental demonstrations, key considerations for these planar metallic lasers remain understudied, leading to incorrect conclusions about the optimal design. Here, we pursue a detailed experimental and theoretical study of planar metallic lasers to exp…
We report on unusual regimes of operation of a laser with a gain medium with a large Raman scattering cross-section, which is often inherent in new types of gain media such as colloidal and epitaxial quantum dots and perovskite materials. These media are characterized by a strong electron-phonon coupling. Using the Fröhlich Hamiltonian to describe the electron-phonon coupling in such media, we analyze the operation of the system above the lasing threshold. We show that below a critical value of the Fröhlich constant, the laser can only operate in the conventional regime: namely, there are cohe…
Parity-time (PT) symmetry is a fundamental notion in quantum field theories. It has opened a new paradigm for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians ranging from quantum mechanics, electronics, to optics. In the realm of optics, optical loss is responsible for power dissipation, therefore typically degrading device performance such as attenuation of a laser beam. By carefully exploiting optical loss in the complex dielectric permittivity, however, recent exploration of PT symmetry revolutionizes our understandings in fundamental physics and intriguing optical phenomena such as exceptional points and phase…
Optically pumped InAs quantum dot microdisk lasers with grooves etched on their surface by a focused ion beam is studied. It is shown that the radial grooves, depending on their length, suppress the lasing of specific radial modes of the microdisk. Total suppression of all radial modes except for the fundamental radial one is also demonstrated. The comparison of laser spectra measured at 78 K before and after ion beam etching for microdisk of 8 $μ$m in diameter shows a six-fold increase of mode spacing, from 2.5 nm to 15.5 nm, without significant decrease of the dominant mode quality factor. N…
We propose a new type of laser resonator based on imaginary "energy-level splitting" (imaginary coupling, or quality factor Q splitting) in a pair of coupled microcavities. A particularly advantageous arrangement involves two microring cavities with different free-spectral ranges (FSRs) in a configuration wherein they are coupled by "far-field" interference in a shared radiation channel. A novel Vernier-like effect for laser resonators is designed where only one longitudinal resonant mode has a lower loss than the small signal gain and can achieve lasing while all other modes are suppressed. T…
The need for molecular standoff detection has motivated the development of a remotely pumped, high gain air laser that produces lasing in the backward direction and can sample the air as the beam returns. High gain is achieved in the near infrared following pumping with a focused ultraviolet laser. The pumping mechanism is simultaneous resonant two-photon dissociation of molecular oxygen and resonant two-photon pumping of the atomic oxygen fragments. The high gain from the millimeter length focal zone leads to equally strong lasing in the forward and backward directions. Further backward ampli…
Titanium doped sapphire (Ti:sapphire) is a laser gain material with broad gain bandwidth benefiting from the material stability of sapphire. These favorable characteristics of Ti:sapphire have given rise to femtosecond lasers and optical frequency combs. Shaping a single Ti:sapphire crystal into a millimeter sized high quality whispering gallery mode resonator ($Q\sim10^8$) reduces the lasing threshold to 14.2 mW and increases the laser slope efficiency to 34%. The observed lasing can be both multi-mode and single-mode. This is the first demonstration of a Ti:sapphire whispering-gallery laser.…
We describe a subluminal laser which is extremely stable against perturbations. It makes use of a composite gain spectrum consisting of a broad background along with a narrow peak. The stability of the laser, defined as the change in frequency as a function of a change in the cavity length, is enhanced by a factor given by the group index, which can be as high as 105 for experimentally realizable parameters. We also show that the fundamental linewidth of such a laser is expected to be smaller by the same factor. We first present an analysis where the gain profile is modeled as a superposition …
We demonstrate yellow laser emission using silicate glass fiber as the gain medium. By employing core pumping using widely available GaN diode lasers with emission at 445 nm, we show that Dy3+-doped aluminosilicate glass fiber can be readily excited creating sufficient gain at 581 nm. In this proof of concept demonstration, the maximum output power generated was 3 mW with a slope efficiency approximately 1.8% with respect to injected pump.
A laser is not necessarily a sophisticated device: Pumping energy into an amplifying medium randomly filled with scatterers, a powder for instance, makes a perfect "random laser." In such a laser, the absence of mirrors greatly simplifies laser design, but control over emission directionality or frequency tunability is lost, seriously hindering prospects for this otherwise simple laser. Lately, we proposed a novel approach to harness random lasers, inspired by spatial shaping methods recently employed for coherent light control in complex media. Here, we experimentally implement this method in…
We derive and test a generalization of Steady-State Ab Initio Laser Theory (SALT) to treat complex gain media. The generalized theory (C-SALT) is able to treat atomic and molecular gain media with diffusion and multiple lasing transitions, and semiconductor gain media in the free carrier approximation including fully the effect of Pauli blocking. The key assumption of the theory is stationarity of the level populations, which leads to coupled self-consistent equations for the populations and the lasing modes that fully include the effects of openness and non-linear spatial hole-burning. These …
Raman fiber lasers (RFLs) are currently promising and versatile light sources for a variety of applications. So far, operations of high power and brightness-enhanced RFLs have absorbed enormous interests along with rapid progress. Nevertheless, the stable Raman lasing at high power levels remains challenged by the thermal effects. In an effort to realize more effective thermal management in high power RFLs, here we demonstrate, for the first time, an all-fiberized RFA employing metal-coated passive fiber enabling high power lasing. By employing aluminum to the cladding of graded-index (GRIN) p…
We report the observation of a clear single-mode instability threshold in continuous-wave Fabry-Perot quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). The instability is characterized by the appearance of sidebands separated by tens of free spectral ranges (FSR) from the first lasing mode, at a pump current not much higher than the lasing threshold. As the current is increased, higher-order sidebands appear that preserve the initial spacing, and the spectra are suggestive of harmonically phase-locked waveforms. We present a theory of the instability that applies to all homogeneously broadened standing-wave lase…
We propose a novel laser configuration that can output 3.5-$μ$m nanosecond laser pulses based on a simple and monolithic fiber structure. Cascade-gain-switching, which converts the wavelength of nanosecond pulses from 1.55 $μ$m to 3.5 $μ$m by two successive gain-switching processes. Instead of using expensive pump sources at special wavelengths and bulky active or passive modulation elements for Q-switching or mode-locking, the cascade gain-switching only requires the pumping of an electric-modulated 1.55-$μ$m pulsed laser and two continuous-wave (CW) 975-nm laser diodes. They are all standard…
Continuous-wave mode-locked femtosecond 2 um solid-state laser with a c-cut Tm:CaYAlO4 as gain medium was experimentally demonstrated. The mode locked laser generated stable pulses with average output power as high as 531 mW, pulse duration of 496 fs, and repetition rate of 97 MHz at 1975 nm. The research results show that Tm:CaYAlO4 is an excellent gain medium for femtosecond pulse generation at 2um wavelength.
Lévy flights for light have been demonstrated in disordered systems with and without optical gain, and remained unobserved in ordered ones. In the present letter, we investigate, numerically and experimentally, Lévy flights for light in ordered systems due to an ordered (conventional) laser. The statistical analysis was performed on the intensity fluctuations of the output spectra upon repeated identical experimental realizations. We found out that the optical gain and the mirrors reflectivity are critical parameters governing the fluctuation statistics. We identified Lévy regimes for gain aro…
A hallmark of spin-lasers, injected with spin-polarized carriers, is their threshold behavior with the onset of stimulated emission. Unlike the single threshold in conventional lasers with unpolarized carriers, two thresholds are expected in spin lasers. With the progress in scaled-down lasers and the use of novel two-dimensional materials it is unclear if the common description of spin lasers assuming a negligible spontaneous emission and linear optical gain remains relevant or even how to identify the lasing thresholds. Our rate-equation description addresses these questions by considering a…
We report on the observation of bound states of gain-guided solitons (GGSs) in a dispersion-managed erbium-doped fiber laser operating in the normal net cavity dispersion regime. Despite of the fact that the GGS is a chirped soliton and there is strong pulse stretching and compression along the cavity in the laser, the bound solitons observed have a fixed pulse separation, which is invariant to the pump strength change. Numerical simulation confirmed the experimental observations.
High-coherence light sources with an ultra-narrow linewidth are of considerable research interests in numerous fields, such as laser interferometer gravitational-wave observatory, laser radio, etc. Herein, commencing from the in-depth analysis for consumption and replenishment law of the carriers in the gain-band under excitation of the feedback signal, a compression idea to compress extremely laser linewidth assisted by distributed feedback has been proposed. Consequentially, a novel laser configuration is demonstrated. A cavity mode signal matching with the output wavelength is fed back into…
