High-coherence light sources with an ultra-narrow linewidth are of considerable research interests in numerous fields, such as laser interferometer gravitational-wave observatory, laser radio, etc. Herein, commencing from the in-depth analysis for consumption and replenishment law of the carriers in the gain-band under excitation of the feedback signal, a compression idea to compress extremely laser linewidth assisted by distributed feedback has been proposed. Consequentially, a novel laser configuration is demonstrated. A cavity mode signal matching with the output wavelength is fed back into the main cavity by the distributed feedback structure to provide an excitation signal required for laser gain. Moreover, the corresponding experimental investigation is conducted based on an on-chip laser system with distributed feedback. Eventually, an ultra-narrow linewidth laser with a side mode suppuration ratio of 80 dB, a linewidth of 10 Hz, a Lorentzian linewidth of sub Hz, and a relative intensity noise (RIN) of -150 dB/Hz is obtained under normal conditions. The proposed idea is valid in any other gain-types lasers with diverse wavelengths, which also provides a new perspective for other laser parameters for extreme modulation.

It is demonstrated as a useful tool to characterize a broadband spectrum for molecular spectroscopy and in particular it enables to characterize the dispersion of inte…
We examine the cavity resonance tuning of high-Q silicon photonic crystal heterostructures by localized laser-assisted thermal oxidation using a 532 nm continuous wave laser focused to a 2.5 mm radius spot-size. The total shift is consistent with the parabolic rate law. A tuning range of up to 8.7 nm is achieved with ~ 30 mW laser powers. Over this tuning range, the cavity Q decreases from 3.2\times10^5 to 1.2\times10^5. Numerical simulations model the temperature distributions in the silicon photonic crystal membrane and the cavity resonance shift from oxidation.
Whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavities can efficiently store and manipulate light with strong light confinement and long photon lifetime, while coupling light into and from WGMs is intrinsically hindered by their unique feature of rotational symmetry. Here, a scattering-assisted liquid crystal (LC) micropillar WGM laser is proposed. WGM lasing at the surface of the micropillar is obviously enhanced by fluorescence scattering in the core of the micropillar. Besides, weak scattering of LC molecules also builds efficient coupling channels between the laser modes and the axial transmission mo…
We demonstrate integrating a high quality factor lithium niobate microdisk resonator with a free-standing membrane waveguide. Our technique is based on femtosecond laser direct writing which produces the pre-structure, followed by focused ion beam milling which reduces the surface roughness of sidewall of the fabricated structure to nanometer scale. Efficient light coupling between the integrated waveguide and microdisk was achieved, and the quality factor of the microresonator was measured as high as 1.67*10^5.
Single mode laser fields oscillate at frequencies well outside the realm of electronics, but their phase/frequency fluctuations fall into the radio frequency domain, where direct manipulation is possible. Electro-optic devices have sufficient bandwidth for controlling and tailoring the dynamics of a laser field down to sub-nanosecond time scales. Thus, a laser field can be arbitrarily reshaped and in particular its phase/frequency fluctuations can be in principle removed. In practice, the time evolution of a reference laser field can be cloned to replace the fluctuations of another laser field…
Supplementing our STM and electron emission studies investigations, concluding in electron pairing in strong laser fields [1], further time-of-flight electron emission studies were carried out, changing the angle of polarization of the incident light, exciting surface plasmon oscillations. It has been found, that those parts of the electron spectrum which have been attributed to electron pairing have a significantly different angular dependence around 80 GW/cm2 where the pairing effect has been found than outside this region (e.g. 120 GW/cm2). These results have been interpreted as the appeara…
We report on fabricating high-fill-factor plano-convex spherical and square micro-lens arrays on fused silica glass surface using CO2 laser assisted reshaping technique. Initially, periodic micro-pillars have been encoded on the glass surface by means of a femtosecond laser beam. Afterwards, the micro-pillars are polished several times by irradiating a CO2 laser beam on top of the micro-pillars. Consequently, spherical micro-lens array with micro-lens size of 50 um x 50 um and square micro-lens array with micro-lens size of 100 um x 100 um are formed on fused silica glass surface. We also stud…
While being invented for precision measurement of single atomic transitions, frequency combs have also become a versatile tool for broadband spectroscopy in the last years. In this paper we present a novel and simple approach for broadband spectroscopy, combining the accuracy of an optical fiber-laser-based frequency comb with the ease-of-use of a tunable external cavity diode laser. This scheme enables broadband and fast spectroscopy of microresonator modes and allows for precise measurements of their dispersion, which is an important precondition for broadband optical frequency comb generati…
A novel model of a semiconductor laser with optical feedback is presented, generalizing Lang-Kobayashi equations to the case of incoherent feedback. The equations are supplemented by a stochastic variable which models random phase difference between the field inside laser cavity and the feedback field. It is shown that for weak-to-moderate feedback the transition from coherent to incoherent feedback leads to replacement of dynamical chaos by almost stationary lasing with slightly fluctuating intensity. Nevertheless, incoherent feedback can lead to chaotic oscillations, but at considerably larg…
We demonstrate a combination of optical and electronic feedback that significantly narrows the linewidth of distributed Bragg reflector lasers (DBRs). We use optical feedback from a long external fiber path to reduce the high-frequency noise of the laser. An electro-optic modulator placed inside the optical feedback path allows us to apply electronic feedback to the laser frequency with very large bandwidth, enabling robust and stable locking to a reference cavity that suppresses low-frequency components of laser noise. The combination of optical and electronic feedback allows us to significan…
A semiconductor laser subject to delayed optical feedback is investigated in the limit of extremely intense feedback power. In a range of feedback polarization rotation angles the emission spectra of the laser reveal a giant gap with width of more than a terahertz. The position of the gap and its width are shown to be regulated by means of feedback polarization rotation angle. We demonstrate that a theoretical approach, based on carrier density grating induced potential, explains our experimental results.
The three goals of this PhD thesis are to improve the understanding of the mechanisms underlying the dynamical instabilities observed in semiconductor lasers subject to external optical feedback, to propose a technique to suppress these instabilities and finally to take advantage of them, for instance for secure communications or to generate microwave time-periodic oscillations.
We present a photon noise and diffraction limited imaging method combining the imaging laser and ultrasonic waves. The laser optical feedback imaging (LOFI) technique is an ultrasensitive imaging method for imaging objects through or embedded within a scattering medium. However, LOFI performances are dramatically limited by parasitic optical feedback occurring in the experimental setup. In this work, we have tagged the ballistic photons by an acousto-optic effect in order to filter the parasitic feedback effect and to reach the theoretical and ultimate sensitivity of the LOFI technique. We pre…
We present a frequency-shifted feedback (FSF) laser based on a tapered amplifier. The laser operates as a coherent broadband source with up to 370GHz spectral width and 2.3us coherence time. If the FSF laser is seeded by a continuous-wave laser a frequency comb spanning the output spectrum appears in addition to the broadband emission. The laser has an output power of 280mW and a center wavelength of 780nm. The ease and flexibility of use of tapered amplifiers makes our FSF laser attractive for a wide range of applications, especially in metrology.
Nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) of helium in an intense few-cycle laser pulse is investigated by applying the three-dimensional semi-classical re-scattering method. It is found that the momentum distribution of He$^{2+}$ shows a single-double-single peak structure as the pulse intensity increases. According to the different mechanisms dominating the NSDI process, the laser intensity can be classified into three regimes where the momentum distribution of He$^{2+}$ exhibits different characteristics. In the relatively high intensity regime, an NSDI mechanism named the "laser-assisted coll…
We study quantum coherence of strongly interacting cold bosons in a double-well potential driven by a laser field. The system is initially in a Fock state and, for either with or without a static tilting field, evolves into the coherent states. The coherence is resonantly enhanced by the photon-assisted tunneling. For the tilted wells, it reveals a two-branch pattern which corresponds to the multiple photon absorption or emission, respectively.
We report fabrication of a multifunctional photonic integrated chip on lithium niobate on insulate (LNOI), which is achieved by femtosecond laser assisted chemo-mechanical polish. We demonstrate a high extinction ratio beam splitter, a 1 * 6 optical switch, and a balanced 3 * 3 interferometer on the fabricated chip by reconfiguring the microelectrode array integrated with the multifunctional photonic circuit.
In this paper we propose a new optical architecture for the laser optical feedback imaging (LOFI) technique which makes it possible to avoid the adverse effect of the optical parasitic backscattering introduced by all the optical interfaces located between the laser source and the studied object. This proposed setup need no specific or complex alignment, that why we can consider the proposed setup as self aligned. We describe the principle used to avoid the parasitic backscattering contributions which deteriorate dramatically amplitude and phase information contained in the LOFI images. Finall…
A broadband chaotic laser with a flat power spectrum extending up to 8.5GHz is achieved by injecting continuous wave laser light into a chaotic diode laser perturbed by fiber random grating induced distributed feedback, which forms a gain-coupled chaotic laser system. More than triple bandwidth enhancement is realized with appropriate frequency detuning between the master and slave lasers. Unlike normal chaotic lasers, the output from such a broadband chaotic laser is free from time-delay signature, which can be applied for practical real-time random number generations and will find useful app…
To increase the spectral efficiency of coherent communication systems, lasers with ever-narrower linewidths are required as they enable higher-order modulation formats with lower bit-error rates. In particular, semiconductor lasers are a key component due to their compactness, low power consumption, and potential for mass production. In field-testing scenarios their output is coupled to a fiber, making them susceptible to external optical feedback (EOF). This has a detrimental effect on its stability, thus it is traditionally countered by employing, for example, optical isolators and angled ou…
We demonstrate that the implementation of phase-locked loop forbidding multimode operation of a long Brillouin resonator also leads to a dramatic reduction of the optical phase noise of the pump itself. In the case of a continuous Er,Yb:glass laser, a reduction by more than 90 dB at 100 Hz of the carrier is observed. This yields an optical linewidth estimated narrower than 2 Hz for the pump laser. The method being independent of the laser wavelength, it can be applied to almost any laser.
Understanding and manipulation of the laser processing quality during the ablation of solids have crucial importance from fundamental and industrial perspectives. Here we have studied the effect of external magnetic field on the micro-material processing of silicon by ultrashort laser pulses. It was found experimentally that such a field directed along the laser beam improves the quality and efficiency of the material removal. Additionally, we observe that the formation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) in a multi-pulse regime is affected by the external magnetic field. Our …
We report on the fabrication of micro-axicons made of glass by laser-assisted wet etching (LAE) and laser polishing. The employed technique, relying on an efficient direct-writing process by femtosecond laser, allows revealing high fidelity profiles while etched in a heated potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution. The remaining surface roughness is then smoothened by carbon dioxide (CO2) laser polishing. Such polishing is limited to the skin of the component so that the tip is only slightly rounded, with a radius of curvature of nearly 200 μm. It is then shown with 500 μm-diameter axicons that the …
Laser cooling of semiconductors has been an elusive goal for many years, and while attempts to cool the narrow gap semiconductors such as GaAs are yet to succeed, recently, net cooling has been attained in a wider gap CdS. This raises the question of whether wider gap semiconductors with higher phonon energies and stronger electron-phonon coupling are better suitable for laser cooling. In this work we develop a straightforward theory of phonon-assisted absorption and photoluminescence of semiconductors that involves more than one phonon and use to examine wide gap materials, such as GaN and Cd…
We demonstrate a smart laser-diffraction analysis technique for particle mixture identification. We retrieve information about the size, geometry, and ratio concentration of two-component heterogeneous particle mixtures with an efficiency above 92%. In contrast to commonly-used laser diffraction schemes -- in which a large number of detectors is needed -- our machine-learning-assisted protocol makes use of a single far-field diffraction pattern, contained within a small angle ($\sim 0.26^{\circ}$) around the light propagation axis. Because of its reliability and ease of implementation, our wor…
A lightsail can be accelerated to ultra-high speed by the radiation pressure of a laser having an intensity of the order of GW/m$^2$, which though presents a critical challenge in the thermal management of lightsails. In this letter, we explore the applicable regimes of solid-state laser cooling in dissipating heat in additional to the previously explored radiative cooling approach. We begin by examining the cooling capacity of laser cooling, and show that the cooling rate from a micron-thick layer doped with ytterbium ions can exceed that of blackbody thermal emission. This allows more intens…
The rapid loading and manipulation of microspheres in optical trap is important for its applications in optomechanics and precision force sensing. We investigate the microsphere behavior under coaction of a dual-beam fiber-optic trap and a pulse laser beam, which reveals a launched microsphere can be effectively captured in a spatial region. A suitable order of pulse duration for launch is derived according to the calculated detachment energy threshold of pulse laser. Furthermore, we illustrate the effect of structural parameters on the launching process, including the spot size of pulse laser…
We investigate the influence of ultrashort laser filaments on high-voltage discharges and spark-free unloading at various repetition rates and wind conditions. For electric fields well below, close to and above the threshold for discharges, we respectively observe remote spark-free unloading, discharge suppression, and discharge guiding. These effects rely on an indirect consequence of the thermal deposition, namely the fast dilution of the ions by the shockwave triggered by the filament at each laser shot. This dilution drastically limits recombination and increases the plasma channel conduct…
In this paper, the spontaneous bremsstrahlung emission from an electron scattered by two fixed nuclei in an intense laser field is investigated in details based upon the Volkov state and the Dirac-Volkov propagator. It has been found that the fundamental harmonic spectrum from the electron radiation exhibits distinctive fringes, which is dependent not only upon the internucleus distance and orientation, but also upon the initial energy of the electron and the laser intensity. By analyzing the differential cross section, we are able to explain these effects in terms of interference among the el…
The Compton scattering of X-ray photons, assisted by a short intense optical laser pulse, is discussed. The differential scattering cross section reveals the interesting feature that the main Klein-Nishina line is accompanied by a series of side-lines forming a broad plateau where up to ${\cal O} (10^3)$ laser photons participate simultaneously in a single scattering event. An analytic formula for the width of the plateau is given. Due to the non-linear mixing of X-ray and laser photons a frequency dependent rotation of the polarization of the final state X-ray photons relative to the scatteri…
We propose a feedback-assisted direct laser writing method to perform laser ablation of fiber optics devices in which their light-collection signal is used to optimize their properties. A femtosecond-pulsed laser beam is used to ablate a metal coating deposited around a tapered optical fiber, employed to show the suitability of the approach to pattern devices with small radius of curvature. During processing, the same pulses generate two-photon fluorescence in the surrounding environment and the signal is monitored to identify different patterning regimes over time through spectral analysis. T…
Electron-positron pair production by the Breit-Wheeler process embedded in a strong laser pulse is analyzed. The transverse momentum spectrum displays prominent peaks which are interpreted as caustics, the positions of which are accessible by the stationary phases. Examples are given for the superposition of an XFEL beam with an optical high-intensity laser beam. Such a configuration is available, e.g., at LCLS at present and at European XFEL in near future. It requires a counter propagating probe photon beam with high energy which can be generated by synchronized inverse Compton backscatterin…
We observe Wannier-Stark localization in curved photonic lattices, realized using arrays of evanescently coupled optical waveguides. By correctly tuning the strength of inter-site coupling in the lattice, we observe that Wannier-Stark states become increasingly localized, and eventually fully localized to one site, as the curvature of the lattice is increased. We then demonstrate that tunneling can be successfully restored in the lattice by applying a sinusoidal modulation to the lattice position, an effect that is a direct analogue of photon-assisted tunneling. This precise tuning of the tunn…
Delayed feedback laser dynamics is described by means of Lang-Kobayashi equation model. Since a lot of initial states asymptotically approach to periodic attractor in the phase space, only periodic steady-state regimes have been studied here. Lyapunov transformation allows us to reduce problem to the differential equation of the first order whereas the spectrum of laser oscillation is governed by the appropriate eigen value problem. Using the symmetry proves that there is the dual laser system with anticipated feedback which has the same dynamic characteristics as laser with delayed feedback.

Zinc Oxide thin films were grown on c-sapphire substrates using pulsed laser deposition. Pump power dependence of surface emission spectra, acquired using a quadrupled 266 nm laser, revealed room temperature stimulated emission (threshold of 900 kW/cm2). Time dependent spectral analysis plus gain measurements of single-shot, side-emission, spectra pumped with a nitrogen laser revealed random lasing indicative of the presence of self-forming laser cavities. It is suggested that random lasing in an epitaxial system rather than a 3-dimensional configuration of disordered scattering elements, was …
Pb-chalcogenide colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are attractive materials to be used as tuneable laser media across the infrared spectrum. However, excessive nonradiative Auger recombination due to the presence of trap states outcompetes light amplification by rapidly annihilating the exciton population, leading to high gain thresholds. Here, we employ a binary blend of CQDs and ZnO nanocrystals in order to passivate the in-gap trap states of PbS-CQD gain medium. Using transient absorption, we measure a five-fold increase in Auger lifetime demonstrating the suppression of trap-assisted Auger reco…
Femtosecond laser ablation has been demonstrated to be a versatile tool to produce micro/nanoscale features with high precision and accuracy. However, the use of high laser fluence to increase the ablation efficiency usually results in unwanted effects, such as redeposition of debris, formation of recast layer and heat-affected zone in or around the ablation craters. Here we circumvent this limitation by exploiting a thin frost layer with a thickness of tens of microns, which can be directly formed by the condensation of water vapor from the air onto the exposed surface whose temperature is be…
The phase synchronization of two semiconductor DFB lasers submitted to both frequency-shifted cross-injection and self-feedback is investigated, both numerically and experimentally. A dedicated setup based on monolithic DFB lasers permits to effectively lock the frequency difference of the two lasers on an external reference over a broad range of parameters. In agreement with a delayed rate equation model, it is shown that the sensitivity of the locking to the optical feedback phases is mitigated by using strong cross-injection, thus paving the way to applications for microwave photonics. Othe…
We experimentally study a semiconductor laser subject to two optical feedbacks in a free space setup. We show that the time delay signature, manifesting itself in the chaotic output intensity, can be better suppressed than in a laser with single feedback. We demonstrate that the control of the feedback phase is essential to suppress the time delay signature, in contrast to the one-delay case, and that the feedback phase also impacts the chaotic bandwidth. By optimizing the feedback phase the time delay signature can be reduced by a factor of 2 while maintaining a large chaotic bandwidth.
