More recently, we have proposed a set of noncommutative space that describes the quantum gravity at the Planck scale [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 53, 115303 (2020)]. The interesting significant result we found is that, the generalized uncertainty principle induces a maximal measurable length of quantum gravity. This measurement revealed strong quantum gravitational effects at this scale and predicted a detection of gravity particles with low energies. In the present paper, to make evidence this prediction, we study in this space, the dynamics of a particle with position-dependent mass (PDM) trapped in an infinite square well. We show that, by increasing the quantum gravitational effect, the PDM of the particle increases and induces deformations of the quantum energy levels. These deformations are more pronounced as one increases the quantum levels allowing, the particle to jump from one state to another with low energies and with high probability densities.
We analyze the high energy scattering inside gravitational backgrounds using 't Hooft's formalism. The scattering is equivalent to geodesic shifts accross Aichelburg-Sexl waves inside the gravitational backgrounds. We find solutions for A-S waves inside various backgrounds and analyze them.
We present an explicit solution of superstring effective equations, represented by gravitational waves and dilaton backgrounds. Particular solutions will be examined in a forthcoming note.
Models of string cosmology predict a stochastic background of gravitational waves with a spectrum that is strongly tilted towards high frequencies. I give simple approximate expressions for spectral densities of the cosmic background which can be directly compared with sensitivities of gravitational wave detectors.
We construct new four-dimensional superstring vacua with extended superconformal symmetries. A non-trivial dilaton background implies the existence of Abelian killing symmetries. These are used to construct dual equivalent backgrounds in a way preserving the N=2 superconformal invariance.
We construct all possible Weyl invariant actions in $d=4$ for linearized spin three field in a general gravitational background. The first action is obtained as the square of the generalized Weyl tensor for a spin three gauge field in nonlinear gravitational background. It is, however, not invariant under spin three gauge transformations. We then construct two other nontrivial Weyl but not gauge invariant actions which are linear in the Weyl tensor of the background geometry. We then discuss existence and uniqueness of a possible linear combination of these three actions which is gauge invaria…
In this paper, we study the non commutative quantum dynamics of the spinorial field in the presence of a gravitational background within DeWitt's approach. By employing the vierbein formalism in the temporal state of non commutative four-dimensional space time, we also analyze the first level correction of the solution and Green's function in terms of the Riemann curvature tensor. The effect of the gravitational background is imposed at least up to the first order of the Riemann curvature tensor.
Several mechanisms exist for generating a stochastic background of gravitational waves in the period following inflation. These mechanisms are generally classical in nature, with the gravitational waves being produced from inhomogeneities in the fields that populate the early universe and not quantum fluctuations. The resulting stochastic background could be accessible to next generation gravitational wave detectors. We develop a framework for computing such a background analytically and computationally. As an application of our framework, we consider the stochastic background of gravitational…
The existence of an electromagnectic field with parallel electric and magnetic components is readdressed in the presence of a gravitational field. A non-parallel solution is shown to exist. Next, we analyse the possibility of finding stationary gravitational waves in de nature. Finaly, We construct a D=4 effective quantum gravity model. Tree-level unitarity is verified.
String cosmology models predict a stochastic cosmic background of gravitational waves with a characteristic spectrum. I describe the background, present astrophysical and cosmological bounds on it, and outline how it may be possible to detect it with gravitational wave detectors.
The spatial and temporal discreteness of gravitational wave sources leads to shot noise that may, in some regimes, swamp any attempts at measuring the anisotropy of the gravitational wave background. Cross-correlating a gravitational wave background map with a sufficiently dense galaxy survey can alleviate this issue, and potentially recover some of the underlying properties of the gravitational wave background. We quantify the shot noise level and we explicitly show that cross-correlating the gravitational wave background and a galaxy catalog improves the chances of a first detection of the b…
The existence of an electromagnetic field with parallel electric and magnetic field components in the presence of a gravitational field is considered. A non-parallel solution is shown to exist. Next, we analyse the possibility of finding stationary gravitational waves in nature. Finally, we construct a D=4 effective quantum gravity model. Tree-level unitarity is verified.
We review the motivations for the search of stochastic backgrounds of gravitational waves and we compare the experimental sensitivities that can be reached in the near future with the existing bounds and with the theoretical predictions.
We study bosonic string theory in a gravitational background. We show that either left-movers or right-movers are the only background independent non-perturbative solutions of the field equations for an arbitrary static metric. They are stable and have a conserved topological charge being therefore topological solitons. The action vanishes for these solutions and hence they provide the dominating contribution in a path integral quantization
In this paper, we investigate gravitational waves as metric perturbations around a general warped 5-dimensional background. We find an analytical solution in Randall-Sundrum braneworld model and analyze the implications of braneworld models in the gravitational waves propagation.
The general BRST-BFV analysis of anomaly in the string theory coupled to background fields is carried out. An exact equation for c-valued symbol of anomaly operator is found and structure of its solutions is studied.
The General Relativity affirms that any field is a source of gravitational field, thus one should affirm that the energy of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) generated primordial gravitational waves. The present article shows that a gravitational wave with dimensionless amplitude $\sim 10^{-5}$ and large wave length $\sim 10$ megaparsecs shifts temperature of CMB radiation about of a part in $10^{5}$.
We perform a detailed analysis on a primordial gravitational-wave background amplified during a Kasner-like pre-inflationary phase allowing for general triaxial anisotropies. It is found that the predicted angular distribution map of gravitational-wave intensity on large scales exhibits topologically distinctive patterns according to the degree of the pre-inflationary anisotropy, thereby serving as a potential probe for the pre-inflationary early universe with future all-sky observations of gravitational waves. We also derive an observational limit on the amplitude of such anisotropic gravitat…
Axion monodromy is a generic phenomenon in string compactifications. We investigate the production of gravitational-wave background from axion monodromy inflation during preheating. By performing lattice simulations using pseudo-spectral methods, we find that significant single-peak stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds are generated during preheating for asymptotic linear $|ϕ|$ and $ϕ^{2/3}$ potentials in axion monodromy inflation and cuspy potentials. This may allow us to explore string compactifications through gravitational waves.
In this letter we report on the computation of instanton-dominated correlation functions in supersymmetric YM theories on ALE spaces. Following the approach of Kronheimer and Nakajima, we explicitly construct the self-dual connection on ALE spaces necessary to perform such computations. We restrict our attention to the simplest case of an $SU(2)$ connection with lowest Chern class on the Eguchi-Hanson gravitational background.
We review cosmological backgrounds of gravitational waves with a particular attention to the scientific potential of the eLISA/NGO mission. After an overview of cosmological backgrounds and detectors, we consider different cosmological sources that could lead to an observable signal. We then study the backgrounds produced by first-order phase transitions and networks of cosmic strings, assessing the prospects for their detection.
We compute the contribution of kinks on cosmic string loops to stochastic background of gravitational waves (SBGW).We find that kinks contribute at the same order as cusps to the SBGW.We discuss the accessibility of the total background due to kinks as well as cusps to current and planned gravitational wave detectors, as well as to the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), the cosmic microwave background (CMB), and pulsar timing constraints. As in the case of cusps, we find that current data from interferometric gravitational wave detectors, such as LIGO, are sensitive to areas of parameter space of…
We indicate the tentative source of instability in the two-dimensional black hole background. There are relevant operators among the tachyon and the higher level vertex operators in the conformal field theory. Connection of this instability with Hawking radiation is not obvious. The situation is somewhat analogous to fields in the background of a negative mass Euclidean Schwarzschild solution (in four dimensions). Speculation is made about decay of the Minkowski black hole into finite temperature flat space.
The simplest and the most straightforward new algorithm for generating solutions to (anti) self-dual Yang-Mills (YM) equation in the typical gravitational instanton backgrounds is proposed. When applied to the Taub-NUT and the Eguchi-Hanson metrics, the two best-known gravitational instantons, the solutions turn out to be the rather exotic type of instanton configurations carrying finite YM action but generally fractional topological charge values.
We consider a massive relativistic particle in the background of a gravitational plane wave. The corresponding Green functions for both spinless and spin 1/2 cases, previously computed by A. Barducci and R. Giachetti \cite{Barducci3}, are reobtained here by alternative methods, as for example, the Fock-Schwinger proper-time method and the algebraic method. In analogy to the electromagnetic case, we show that for a gravitational plane wave background a semiclassical approach is also sufficient to provide the exact result, though the lagrangian involved is far from being a quadratic one.
We review several cosmological backgrounds of gravitational waves accessible to direct-detection experiments, with a special emphasis on those backgrounds due to first-order phase transitions and networks of cosmic (super-)strings. For these two particular sources, we revisit in detail the computation of the gravitational wave background and improve the results of previous works in the literature. We apply our results to identify the scientific potential of the NGO/eLISA mission of ESA regarding the detectability of cosmological backgrounds.
The gravitational wave radiation emitted by all, resolved and unresolved, astrophysical sources in the observable universe generates a stochastic background. This background has a directional dependence inherited from the inhomogeneities of the matter distribution. This article proposes a new and independent derivation of the angular dependence of its energy density by focusing on the total gravitational wave signal produced by an ensemble of incoherent sources. This approach clarifies the origin of the angular correlation and the relation between the gravitational wave signal that can be meas…
We study the contribution to entropy of Black Holes in D=2+1 dimensions from an extension of the Chern Simons theory including higher derivative in a curved space-time.
Based on the theory of mutual coherence of light from an extended incoherent quasi-monochromatic source (providing a basis of stellar interferometry) we estimate the degree of light incoherence due to quantum-gravitational fluctuations of the background metric. It is shown that the stellar interferometry observational data considered in the literature for a last few years as a manifestation against the Planck scale quantum-gravitational fluctuations of the background metric have no chance for detecting such an effect.
In the near future we will witness the coming to a full operational regime of laser interferometers and resonant mass detectors of spherical shape. In this work we study the sensitivity of pairs of such gravitational wave detectors to a scalar stochastic background of gravitational waves. Our computations are carried out both for minimal and non minimal coupling of the scalar fields.
We find the explicit expression of the supercharges of eleven dimensional supergraviton on the background geometry of gravitational waves in asymptotically light-like compactified spacetime. We perform the calculations order by order in the fermions $\p$, while retaining all orders in bosonic degrees of freedom, and get the closed form up to $\p^5$ order. This should correspond to the supercharge of the effective action of (0+1)-dimensional matrix quantum mechanics for, at least, $v^4$ and $v^6$ order terms and their superpartners.
In this paper, we present several gravitational wave solutions in AdS_5 X S^5 string backgrounds, as well as in AdS_7 X S^4 and AdS_4 X S^7 backgrounds in M-theory, generalizing the results of hep-th/0403253 by one of the authors. In each case, we present the general form of such solutions and give explicit examples, preserving certain amount of supersymmetry, by taking limits on known BPS D3 and M2, M5-brane solutions in pp-wave backgrounds. A key feature of our examples is the possibility of a wider variety of wave profiles, than in pure gravity and string/M-theory examples known earlier, co…
We show that a {\it massless} scalar field in a gravitational wave background can develop a non-zero vacuum expectation value. We draw comparisons to the generation of a non-zero vacuum expectation value for a scalar field in the Higgs mechanism and with the dynamical Casimir vacuum. We propose that this vacuum expectation value, generated by a gravitational wave, can be connected with particle production from gravitational waves and may have consequences for the early Universe where scalar fields are thought to play an important role.
We introduce a 'quasi-topological` term [1] in D=1+1 dimensions and the entropy for black holes is calculated [2]. The source of entropy in this case is justified by a non-null stress-energy tensor.
We discuss the gravitational wave background produced by bouncing models based on a full quantum evolution of a universe filled with a perfect fluid. Using an ontological interpretation for the background wave function allows us to solve the mode equations for the tensorial perturbations, and we find the spectral index as a function of the fluid equation of state.
We analyse the stringy gravitational wave background based on the current algebra $E^{c}_{2}$. We determine its exact spectrum and construct the modular invariant vacuum energy. The corresponding N=1 extension is also constructed. The algebra is again mapped to free bosons and fermions and we show that this background has N=4 (N=2) unbroken spacetime supersymmetry in the type II (heterotic case).
We investigate the cosmological evolution of gravitational waves in Friedman-Robertson-Walker brane world models embedded in a five dimensional anti de-Sitter spacetime. To predict the spectrum of stochastic gravitational background at present generated in the inflationary phase, we numerically calculate the evolution of gravitational waves according to the method developed in our previous paper [K. Ichiki and K. Nakamura, arXiv:hep-th/0310282]. The resulting logarithmic energy spectrum is significantly altered from that of the standard four dimensional inflationary models in the frequency ran…
We do a complete calculation of the stochastic gravitational wave background to be expected from cosmic strings. We start from a population of string loops taken from simulations, smooth these by Lorentzian convolution as a model of gravitational back reaction, calculate the average spectrum of gravitational waves emitted by the string population at any given time, and propagate it through a standard model cosmology to find the stochastic background today. We take into account all known effects, including changes in the number of cosmological relativistic degrees of freedom at early times and …
Effective topological field theories describe the properties of Dirac fermions in the low-energy regime. In this work, we introduce a new emergent gravity model by considering Dirac fermions invariant under local de Sitter transformations in four-dimensional open manifolds. In the context of Cartan geometry, fermions couple to spacetime through a $Spin(5)$ Cartan connection that can be decomposed in spin connection and tetrads. In presence of a gravitational instanton background, we show that the corresponding effective topological field theory becomes a dynamical gravitational theory with a p…
We consider the stochastic background of gravitational waves produced by a network of cosmic strings and assess their accessibility to current and planned gravitational wave detectors, as well as to big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), cosmic microwave background (CMB), and pulsar timing constraints. We find that current data from interferometric gravitational wave detectors, such as LIGO, are sensitive to areas of parameter space of cosmic string models complementary to those accessible to pulsar, BBN, and CMB bounds. Future more sensitive LIGO runs and interferometers such as Advanced LIGO and LI…
Physical scenarios, leading to highly energetic stochastic gravitational waves backgrounds (for frequencies ranging from the $μ$Hz up to the GHz) are examined. In some cases the typical amplitude of the logarithmic energy spectrum can be even eight orders of magnitude larger than the ordinary inflationary prediction. Scaling violations in the frequency dependence of the energy density of the produced gravitons are discussed.
Inspired by the studies of gravitational waves in anti-de Sitter universe, in general relativity, in this paper we investigate the possibility of similar solutions in IIB string theory on $AdS_3 x S^3 x R^4$. We give a general form for such solutions in this background and present several explicit examples, by directly solving the field equations, as well as the ones obtained by taking a scaling limit on D1-D5 brane systems in a pp-wave background. The form of the metric in our solutions corresponds to a gravitational wave in $AdS_3$. We show the supersymmetric nature of these solutions and di…
The geometric optics approximation traditionally used to study the propagation of gravitational waves on a curved background, breaks down in the vicinity of compact and extended astrophysical objects, where wave-like effects like diffusion and generation of polarization occur. We provide a framework to study the generation of polarization of a stochastic background of gravitational waves propagating in an inhomogeneous universe. The framework is general and can be applied to both cosmological and astrophysical gravitational wave backgrounds in any frequency range. We derive an order of magnitu…
We obtain classes of two dimensional static Lorentzian manifolds, which through the supersymmetric formalism of quantum mechanics admit the exact solvability of Dirac equation on these curved backgrounds. Specially in the case of a modified supersymmetric harmonic oscillator the wave function and energy spectrum of Dirac equation is given explicitly.
We derive a full analytical approximation to the stochastic gravitational wave background generated by the loops that are produced throughout the cosmological evolution of cosmic string networks. We show that this approximation not only predicts the amplitude of the radiation-era plateau exactly, but also provides a good fit to the high-frequency cut-off and to the low-frequency peak generated by the loops that decay during the matter era, irrespective of cosmic string tension and of the length of loops created. We then find that it provides a good quantitative description of the full stochast…
Unresolved and resolved sources of gravitational waves are at the origin of a stochastic gravitational wave background. While the computation of its mean density as a function of frequency in a homogeneous and isotropic universe is standard lore, the computation of its anisotropies requires to understand the coarse graining from local systems, to galactic scales and then to cosmology. An expression of the gravitational wave energy density valid in any general spacetime is derived. It is then specialized to a perturbed Friedmann-Lemaître spacetime in order to determine the angular power spectru…

A Hamiltonian linearization of the rest-frame instant form of tetrad gravity (gr-qc/0302084), where the Hamiltonian is the weak ADM energy ${\hat E}_{ADM}$, in a completely fixed (non harmonic) 3-orthogonal Hamiltonian gauge is defined. For the first time this allows to find an explicit solution of all the Hamiltonian constraints and an associated linearized solution of Einstein's equations. It corresponds to background-independent gravitational waves in a well defined post-Minkowskian Christodoulou-Klainermann space-time.
We analyze the signal-to-noise ratio for a relic background of scalar gravitational radiation composed of massive, non-relativistic particles, interacting with the monopole mode of two resonant spherical detectors. We find that the possible signal is enhanced with respect to the differential mode of the interferometric detectors. This enhancement is due to: {\rm (a)} the absence of the signal suppression, for non-relativistic scalars, with respect to a background of massless particles, and {\rm (b)} for flat enough spectra, a growth of the signal with the observation time faster than for a mas…
Gravitational counterpart of the chiral magnetic effect, which is referred as the chiral gravitational effect, can also be of interest in a cosmological setup. In this study, we investigate this effect in the time-dependent chiral asymmetric fermion background and in the expanding spacetime by formulating the effective action of gravitational waves. We also analyze the anomaly equation to see how the backreaction from gravitational waves to thermal chiral plasma occurs. We find that the non-trivial time dependence of chiral chemical potential, which can be induced in some scenarios of baryogen…
Based on the relationship between proper distance and coordinate distance, the geometrical phenomenon caused by the passing gravitational waves can not be observed locally. The electromagnetic wave equations in the background gravitational waves are studied. We find that the expansion and contraction of wave lengths are always synchronous with the objects it measures. The background of the gravitational waves leads to dissipation and dispersion in the propagation of electromagnetic wave. The phase of the gravitational waves control the dissipation term and dispersion term in the telegrapher's …
In this article we elaborate on a recently proposed interpretation of DSR as an effective measurement theory in the presence of non-negligible (albeit small) quantum gravitational fluctuations. We provide several heuristic arguments to explain how such a new theory can emerge and discuss the possible observational consequences of this framework.
Pulsar timing arrays are one of the powerful tools to test the existence of cosmic strings through searching for the gravitational wave background. The amplitude of the background connects to information on cosmic strings such as the tension and string network properties. In addition, one may be able to extract more information on properties of cosmic strings by measuring anisotropies in the gravitational wave (GW) background. In this paper, we provide estimates of the level of anisotropy expected in the GW background generated by cusps on cosmic strings. We find that the anisotropy level stro…
Preheating and other particle production phenomena in the early Universe can give rise to high- energy out-of-equilibrium fermions with an anisotropic stress. We develop a formalism to calculate the spectrum of gravitational waves due to fermions, and apply it to a variety of scenarios after inflation. We pay particular attention to regularization issues. We show that fermion production sources a stochastic background of gravitational waves with a significant amplitude, but we find that typical frequencies of this new background are not within the presently accessible direct detec- tion range.…
