The spatial and temporal discreteness of gravitational wave sources leads to shot noise that may, in some regimes, swamp any attempts at measuring the anisotropy of the gravitational wave background. Cross-correlating a gravitational wave background map with a sufficiently dense galaxy survey can alleviate this issue, and potentially recover some of the underlying properties of the gravitational wave background. We quantify the shot noise level and we explicitly show that cross-correlating the gravitational wave background and a galaxy catalog improves the chances of a first detection of the background anisotropy with a gravitational wave observatory operating in the frequency range (10Hz,100Hz), given sufficient sensitivity.
Detecting stochastic gravitational wave background from cosmic strings with next-generation detector networks: Component separation based on a multi-source astrophysical foreground noise model
The nearby universe is expected to create an anisotropic stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB). Different algorithms have been developed and implemented to search for isotropic and anisotropic SGWB. The aim of this paper is to quantify the advantage of an optimal anisotropic search, specifically comparing a point source with an isotropic background. Clusters of galaxies appear as point sources to a network of ground based laser interferometric detectors. The optimal search strategy for these sources is a "directed radiometer search". We show that the flux of SGWB created by the milli…
This article explores the properties (amplitude and shape) of the angular power spectrum of the anisotropies of the astrophysical gravitational wave background (AGWB) focusing on the signatures of the astrophysical models describing sub-galactic physics. It demonstrates that while some parameters have negligible impact others, and in particular the stellar evolution models, the metallicity and the merger time delay distribution can result in relative differences of order 40% in the angular power spectrum of anisotropies in both the LIGO/Virgo and LISA frequency bands. It is also shown that the…
Gravitational waves emitted from compact binary coalescence can be subject to wave diffraction if they are gravitationally lensed by an intervening mass clump whose Schwarzschild timescale matches the wave period. Waves in the ground-based frequency band $f\sim 10$--$10^3\,$Hz are sensitive to clumps with masses $M_E \sim 10^2$--$10^3\,M_\odot$ enclosed within the impact parameter. These can be the central parts of low mass $M_L \sim 10^3$--$10^6\,M_\odot$ dark matter halos, which are predicted in Cold Dark Matter scenarios but are challenging to observe. Neglecting finely-tuned impact paramet…
Inflation may provide a suitable collider to probe physics at very high energies. In this paper we investigate the impact on the CMB bispectrum of higher spin fields which are long-lived on super-Hubble scales, e.g. partially massless higher spin fields. We show that distinctive statistical anisotropic signals on the CMB three-point correlator are induced and we investigate their detectability.
We investigate the cosmological and astrophysical constraints on superconducting cosmic strings (SCSs). SCS loops emit strong bursts of electromagnetic waves, which might affect various cosmological and astrophysical observations. We take into account the effect on the CMB anisotropy, CMB blackbody spectrum, BBN, observational implications on radio wave burst and X-ray or gamma-ray events, and stochastic gravitational wave background measured by pulsar timing experiments. We then derive constraints on the parameters of SCS from current observations and estimate prospects for detecting SCS sign…
Stable massive neutral particles emitted by astrophysical sources undergo deflection under the gravitational potential of our own galaxy. The deflection angle depends on the particle velocity and therefore non-relativistic particles will be deflected more than relativistic ones. If these particles can be detected through neutrino telescopes, cosmic ray detectors or directional dark matter detectors, their arrival directions would appear aligned on the sky along the source-lens direction. On top of this deflection, the arrival direction of non-relativistic particles is displaced with respect to…
We develop a detailed anisotropic model for the astrophysical gravitational-wave background, including binary mergers of two stellar-mass black holes, two neutron stars, or one of each, which are expected to be the strongest contributions in the LIGO-Virgo frequency band. The angular spectrum of the anisotropies, quantified by the $C_\ell$ components, is calculated using two complementary approaches: (i) a simple, closed-form analytical expression, and (ii) a detailed numerical study using an all-sky mock light cone galaxy catalogue from the Millennium simulation. The two approaches are in exc…
The redshift of light is calculated for an anisotropic cosmological spacetime. Two different approaches are considered. In the first one, electromagnetic waves are modeled using the geometrical optics (high--frequency) approximation. This approach considers light rays following null geodesics, being equivalent to the motion followed by pointlike spinless massless particles. It is shown that the redshift for this case depends, in general, on the direction of propagation, and is dispersive (wavelength dependent) for light emitted from different points of an extended object. In the second approac…
We calculate the 4He abundance in a universe of Bianchi type I whose cosmic anisotropy is dynamically generated by a fluid with anisotropic equation of state. Requiring that the relative variation of mass fraction of 4He is less than 4% with respect to the standard isotropic case to be consistent with astrophysical data, we constrain the parameter of cosmic anisotropy, the shear Σ, as |Σ(T_f)| < 0.4, where T_f is the freeze-out temperature of the weak interactions that interconvert neutrons and protons. Anisotropic fluids, whose energy density is subdominant with respect to the energy content …
Explaining the late time acceleration is one of the most challenging tasks for theoretical physicists today. Infra-red modification of Einstein's general theory of relativity (GR) is a possible route to model late time acceleration. In this regard, vector-tensor theory as a part of gravitational interactions on large cosmological scales, has been proposed recently. This involves generalization of massive Proca lagrangian in curved space time. Black hole solutions in such theories have also been constructed. In this paper, we study different astrophysical signatures of such black holes. We firs…
We use population inference to explore the impact that uncertainties in the distribution of binary black holes (BBH) have on the astrophysical gravitational-wave background (AGWB). Our results show that the AGWB monopole is sensitive to the nature of the BBH population (particularly the local merger rate), while the anisotropic $C_\ell$ spectrum is only modified to within a few percent, at a level which is insignificant compared to other sources of uncertainty (such as cosmic variance). This is very promising news for future observational studies of the AGWB, as it shows that (i) the monopole …
The detection of ionized bubbles around quasars in redshifted 21-cm maps is possibly one of the most direct future probes of reionization. We consider two models for the growth of spherical ionized bubbles to study the apparent shapes of the bubbles in redshifted 21-cm maps, taking into account the finite light travel time (FLTT) across the bubble. We find that the FLTT, whose effect is particularly pronounced for large bubbles, causes the bubble's image to continue to grow well after it's actual growth is over. There are two distinct FLTT distortions in the bubble's image: (i) its apparent ce…
High-dimensional, large-sample astrophysical databases of galaxy clusters, such as the Chandra Deep Field South COMBO-17 database, provide measurements on many variables for thousands of galaxies and a range of redshifts. Current understanding of galaxy formation and evolution rests sensitively on relationships between different astrophysical variables; hence an ability to detect and verify associations or correlations between variables is important in astrophysical research. In this paper, we apply a recently defined statistical measure called the distance correlation coefficient which can be…
We propose an observable for ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) physics: the harmonic-space cross-correlation power spectrum between the arrival directions of UHECRs and the large-scale cosmic structure mapped by galaxies. This cross-correlation has not yet been considered in the literature, and it permits a direct theoretical modelling of the main astrophysical components. We describe the expected form of the cross-correlation and show how, if the distribution of UHECR sources trace the large-scale cosmic structure, it could be easier to detect with current data than the UHECR auto-correlat…
