Precision measurements of the Higgs couplings are, for the first time, directly probing the mechanism of fermion mass generation. The purpose of this work is to determine to what extent these measurements can distinguish between the tree-level mechanism of the Standard Model and the theoretically motivated alternative of radiative mass generation. Focusing on the third-family, we classify the minimal one-loop models and find that they fall into two general classes. By exploring several benchmark models in detail, we demonstrate that a radiative origin for the tau-lepton and bottom-quark masses is consistent with current observations. While future colliders will not be able to rule out a radiative origin, they can probe interesting regions of parameter space.
We study two 3-3-1 models with i) five (four) charge 2/3 ($-1/3$) quarks and, ii) four (five) charge 2/3 ($-1/3$) quarks and a vector-like third generation. Possibilities beyond these models are also briefly considered.
We argue that the masses of the first and third fermionic generations, which are respectively of the order of a few MeV up to a hundred GeV, are originated in a dynamical symmetry breaking mechanism leading to masses of the order $αμ$, where $α$ is a small coupling constant and $μ$, in the case of the first fermionic generation, is the scale of the dynamical quark mass ($\approx 250$ MeV). For the third fermion generation $μ$ is the value of the dynamical techniquark mass ($\approx 250$ GeV). We discuss how this possibility can be implemented in a technicolor scenario, and how the mass of the …
Relations among fermion masses and mixing angles at the scale of grand unification are modified at lower energies by renormalization group running induced by gauge and Yukawa couplings. In supersymmetric theories, the $b$ quark and $τ$ lepton Yukawa couplings, as well as the $t$ quark coupling, may cause significant running if $\tan β$, the ratio of Higgs field expectation values, is large. We present approximate analytic expressions for the scaling factors for fermion masses and CKM matrix elements induced by all three third generation Yukawa couplings. We then determine how running caused by…
Within the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, we investigate the 1-loop effects of supersymmetric particles on the third-generation fermion-pair production at the ILC. Three sets of the SUSY parameters are proposed which are consistent with the observed Higgs mass, the muon g-2, the Dark Matter abundance and the decay branching ratio of B meson. We discuss on the possibility of discovering the signals consistent with SUSY as well as of experimentally distinguishing the proposed sets of SUSY parameters.
The phenomenology of an additional U(1) neutral gauge boson Z' coupled to the third family of fermions is discussed. One might expect such a particle to contribute to processes where taus, b and t quarks are produced. Precision data from LEP1 put severe constraints on the mixing and heavy-boson mass. We find that the effects of such a particle could not be observed at hadronic colliders, be it at the Tevatron or the LHC, because of the QCD background. At LEP2 and future e^+e^- linear colliders, one could instead hope to observe such effects, in particular for b\bar b final states.
We explore the physics of a new neutral gauge boson, ($Z^\prime$), coupling to only third-generation particles with a mass near the electroweak gauge boson mass poles. A $Z^\prime$ boson produced by top quarks and decaying to tau leptons is considered. With a simple search strategy inspired by existing analyses of the standard model gauge boson production in association with top quarks, we show that the Large Hadron Collider has good exclusionary power over the model parameter space of the $Z^\prime$ boson even at the advent of the high-luminosity era. It is shown that the $t\bar{t}Z^\prime$ p…
New regularities found in the pseudoscalar meson octet are reported. They invite to reconsider models where elementary fermions and composite QCD open strings can be grouped in common supermultiplets. It is proven that, with fermions having the standard model charges, such grouping needs at least three families.
We perform a systematic study of the production of a third-generation fermion-pair, $μ^+μ^-\to f\bar{f}$ for $f=τ^-,b$, and t in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with explicit CP violation, which is induced radiatively by soft trilinear interactions related to squarks of the third generation. We classify all the observables for probing the CP property of the Higgs bosons constructed by the initial muon beam polarization along with the unpolarized final fermions and with the final-fermion polarization configuration of equal helicity, respectively. The observables allow for compl…
The low-energy manifestations of a minimal extension of the electroweak standard model based on the quark-lepton symmetry $SU(4)_V \otimes SU(2)_L \otimes G_R$ of the Pati-Salam type are analyzed. Given this symmetry the third type of mixing in the interactions of the $SU(4)_V$ leptoquarks with quarks and leptons is shown to be required. An additional arbitrariness of the mixing parameters could allow, in principle, to decrease noticeably the indirect lower bound on the vector leptoquark mass originated from the low-energy rare processes, strongly suppressed in the standard model.

In the third fermion family and gauge symmetry of the Standard Model, we study the quark-quark, lepton-lepton and quark-lepton four-fermion operators in an effective theory at high energies. These operators have nontrivial contributions to the Schwinger-Dyson equations for fermion self-energy functions and the $W^\pm$-boson coupling vertex. As a result, the top-quark mass is generated via the spontaneous symmetry breaking of $\langle\bar t t \rangle$-condensate and the $W^\pm$-boson coupling becomes approximately vectorlike at TeV scale. The bottom-quark, tau-lepton and tau-neutrino masses are…
Fermion masses may arise via mixing of elementary fermions with composite fermions of a strong sector in scenarios of strongly-coupled electroweak symmetry breaking. The strong sector may contain leptoquark states with masses as light as several hundred GeV. In the present study we focus on the scalar modes of such leptoquarks since their bosonic couplings are determined completely and hence their production cross sections only depend on their masses. We study all the possible gauge-invariant non-derivative and single-derivative couplings of the scalar leptoquarks to the quarks and leptons, wh…
We use the results of CMS and ATLAS searches for resonances that decay to $τν$ or $tb$ and $τ^+τ^-$ or $t\bar t$ final states to constrain the parameters of non-universal $W^\prime$ and $Z^\prime$ gauge bosons that couple preferentially to the third generation. For the former we consider production from $c\bar{b}$ annihilation and find very weak constraints on the strength of the interaction and only for the mass range between 800 and 1100 GeV from the $pp \to τ_h p_T^{\rm miss}$ channel. The constraints on the latter are much stronger and arise from both $t\bar t$ and $τ^+τ^-$ production. Tre…
We study the potential to use measurements of extra neutral gauge bosons (Z') properties in pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider to unravel the underlying physics. We focus on the usefulness of third generation final states (tau, b, t) in distinguishing between models with non-universal Z'-fermion couplings. We present an update of discovery limits of Z's including the 2010-2011 LHC run and include models with non-universal couplings. We show how ratios of sigma(pp -> Z' -> ttbar), sigma(pp -> Z' -> bbbar), and sigma(pp -> Z' -> tau^+tau^-) to sigma(pp -> Z' -> mu^+mu^-) can be used to d…

We provide a theoretical justification for the existence of fourth family fermions of the Standard Model by showing that in a novel form of spontaneous $CP$ breaking, fourth family is inevitable. This requires that fermions of third and fourth families must be mirror matter conjectured long back by Lee and Yang.
We present a model to explain LHCb's recent measurements of $R_K$ and $R_{K^{\ast}}$ based on an anomaly-free, spontaneously-broken $U(1)_F$ gauge symmetry, without any fermionic fields beyond those of the Standard Model (SM). The model explains the hierarchical heaviness of the third family and the smallness of quark mixing. The $U(1)_F$ charges of the third family of SM fields and the Higgs doublet are set equal to their respective hypercharges. A heavy $Z^\prime$ particle with flavour-dependent couplings can modify the $[\overline{b_L} γ^ρs_L][\overline{μ_L} γ_ρμ_L]$ effective vertex in the…
Sterile neutrinos coupling only to third-generation fermions are attractive dark matter candidates. In an EFT approach we demonstrate that they can generate the observed relic density without violating constraints from direct and indirect detection. Such an EFT represents a gauged third-generation $B-L$ model, as well as third-generation scalar or vector leptoquarks. LHC measurements naturally distinguish the different underlying models.
A general study of the fermionic structure of the 331 models with βarbitrary shows the possibility of obtaining 331 vector-like models with mirror fermions. On one hand, the existence of mirror fermions gives a possible way to fit the discrepancy in the bottom quark asymmetries from the prediction of the standard model. On the other hand, the vector-like nature of the model permits to address the problem of the fermion mass hierarchy, and in particular the problem of the neutrino mass and mixing pattern. Specifically, we consider a model with four families and β=-1/\sqrt{3} where the additiona…
We discuss a test of the Standard Model fermion mass origin in models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. The couplings of composite pseudoscalar resonances to top quarks allow to distinguish high-scale Extended-Technicolor-type fermion mass generation from fermion partial compositeness and low-scale mass generation via an induced vacuum expectation value of a doublet coupled to the composite sector. These different possible origins of fermion masses are thus accessible via weak-scale physics searched for at the LHC.
We review the recent discussion in the literature of one family extended technicolour models with techni-fermion mass spectra compatible with the experimental data for the precision parameters S,T,U,V, W and X and ETC interactions compatible with the LEP measurements of the $Z\to b{\bar b}$ vertex. To investigate whether these scenarios are consistent with the third family fermion masses we develop a generalized ETC model in which ETC interactions are represented by four Fermi interactions. We discuss in detail the reliability of the gap equation approximation to the non-perturbative dynamics.…
We compute the third-order correction to the S-wave quarkonium wave functions |ψ_n(0)|^2 at the origin from non-Coulomb potentials in the effective non-relativistic Lagrangian. Together with previous results on the Coulomb correction and the ultrasoft correction computed in a companion paper, this completes the third-order calculation up to a few unknown matching coefficients. Numerical estimates of the new correction for bottomonium and toponium are given.
We present a possible interpretation on the origin of the four-fermion interaction used in effective field theories. Inspired by the sharp momentum peak seen in Bose-Einstein condensate state, we incorporate the special gluon condensate effect into the gluon propagator. We then find that, if one considers hypothetic situation with the condensed gluon, the four-fermion contact interaction can arise from the first principle theory of quantum chromodynamics.
We investigate a dynamical mechanism to generate fermion mass in the Randall-Sundrum background. We consider four-fermion interaction models where the fermion field propagates in an extra-dimension, i.e. the bulk four-fermion interaction model. It is assumed that two types of fermions with opposite parity exist in the bulk. We show that electroweak-scale mass is dynamically generated for a specific fermion anti-fermion condensation, even if all the scale parameters in the Lagrangian are set to the Planck scale.
We compare two non-relativistic (NR) reduction schemes (heavy-fermion and Foldy-Wouthuysen) that are used to derive low-energy effective-field-theory Lagrangians. We give the explicit transformation between the two types of fields to O(1/m^2), derived from a quite general, relativistic Lagrangian. Beyond leading order the NR reductions always involve the smaller components of the Dirac spinors that are to be integrated out to formulate the NR theory. Even so, the transformation between the NR Lagrangians can be carried out explicitly to O(1/m^2) using a field renormalization, as long as the lo…
Several phenomenological features of fermion masses and mixings can be accounted for by a simple model for fermion mass matrices, which suggests an underlying U(2) horizontal symmetry. In this context, it is also proposed how an approximate quark-lepton symmetry can be achieved without unified gauge theories.
It is now established that the major source of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) is due to the observed Higgs particle. However, whether the Higgs mechanism is responsible for the generation of all the fermion masses, in particular, the fermions of the first two generations, is an open question. In this letter we present a construction where the light fermion masses are generated through a secondary, subdominant and sequestered source of EWSB. This fits well with the approximate U(2) global symmetry of the observed structure of the flavor sector. We first realize the above idea using a calc…
We analyze the behavior of Standard Model matter propagating in a slice of AdS_5 in the presence of infrared-brane kinetic terms. Brane kinetic terms are naturally generated through radiative corrections and can also be present at tree level. The effect of the brane kinetic terms is to expell the heavy KK modes from the infrared-brane, and hence to reduce their coupling to the localized Higgs field. In a previous work we showed that sizable gauge kinetic terms can allow KK mode masses as low as a few TeV, compatible with present precision measurements. We study here the effect of fermion brane…
A detailed and general study of the fermionic structure of the 331 models with βarbitrary is carried out based on the criterion of cancellation of anomalies. We consider models with an arbitrary number of lepton and quark generations, but requiring to associate only one lepton and one quark SU(3) _{L} multiplet for each generation, and at most one right-handed singlet per each left-handed fermion. We see that the number of quark left-handed multiplets must be three times the number of leptonic left-handed multiplets. Furthermore, we consider a model with four families and β=-1/\sqrt{3} where t…
We obtain analytic expressions for the third-order corrections due to the strong interaction Coulomb potential to the S-wave Green function, energy levels and wave functions at the origin for arbitrary principal quantum number n. Together with the known non-Coulomb correction this results in the complete spectrum of S-states up to order alpha_s^5. The numerical impact of these corrections on the Upsilon spectrum and the top quark pair production cross section near threshold is estimated.
It is shown that a simple breaking of the subnuclear democracy leads to a successful description of the mixing between the second and third family. In the lepton channel the $ν_{μ} - ν_{τ}$ oscillations are expected to be described by a mixing angle of $2.65^ {\circ }$ which might be observed soon in neutrino experiments.
Dynamical equations for fermion masses are derived using high scale universal mass generation and consequent mass evolution due to $SU(3), SU(2)$, and U(1$ gauge interaction. Assuming mass generation at the GUT scale $M=10^{14}$ GeV, one obtains hierarchy and a large spread in fermion masses with roughly correct values of $m_ν, m_τ, m_t, m_b$ in the third generation. The smallness of neutrino mass, $ν_3\sim 10^{-12} m_{t}$, naturally arises in the solution.
Radiatively generated fermion masses without tree level Yukawa couplings are re-analyzed within supersymmetric models. Special emphasis is given to the possible appearance of color and charge breaking vacua. Several scenarios in which the radiative mechanism can be accomodated for the first, second, and third generation fermion masses are presented. Some of these require a low scale of supersymmetry breaking.
We construct for the first time a flavor model, based on the smallest discrete symmetry Delta(27) that implements spontaneous CP violation with a complex phase of geometric origin, which can actually reproduce all quark masses and mixing data. We show that its scalar sector has exotic properties that can be tested at the LHC.
Custodial $SU(2)$ breaking due to dynamical fermion masses is studied in a rather general context and it is shown how some well known limiting cases are correctly described. The type of ``gap equation'' which can systematically lead to extra negative contributions to the so--called $ρ$--parameter is emphasized. Furthermore general model independent features are discussed and it is shown how electro--weak precision measurements can be sensitive to the fermion content and/or dynamical features of a given theory.
The D-term is a particle property defined, similarly to the mass and spin, through matrix elements of the energy-momentum tensor. It is currently not known experimentally for any particle, but the D-term of the nucleon can be inferred from studies of hard-exclusive reactions. In this work we show that the D-term of a spin-1/2 fermion is of dynamical origin: it vanishes for a free fermion. This is in pronounced contrast to the bosonic case where already a free spin-0 boson has a non-zero intrinsic D-term as shown in an accompanying work. We illustrate in two simple models how interactions gener…
We reveal the origin of the CP violation required by the leptogenesis in variously popular seesaw models. Especially we clarify that in a pure type-I/III seesaw with two fermion singlets/triplets, a combined type-I+III seesaw with one fermion singlet and one fermion triplet, or a combined type-I/III+II seesaw with one fermion singlet/triplet and one Higgs triplet, the CP violation for the leptogenesis can exactly come from the imaginary part of the neutrino mass matrix in a special basis where the Yukawa couplings involving one fermion singlet/triplet are allowed to get rid of any CP phases. W…
We construct a model where the Yukawa couplings of the Standard Model (SM) fermions arise from the breaking of a $Z_2$ symmetry and through mixing with a fourth family of vector-like fermions. By adding a scalar leptoquark, which is an electroweak triplet and odd under the $Z_2$ symmetry, we obtain an explanation for $R_{K^{(*)}}$ that is linked to the origin of the Yukawa couplings. The coupling of SM fermions to the leptoquark is mediated by the fourth family fermions, and is predicted to be related to CKM entries and mass ratios of SM fermions.
We continue our study of Coleman-Weinberg symmetry breaking induced by a third rank antisymmetric tensor scalar, in the context of the $SU(8)$ model we proposed earlier. We focus in this paper on qualitative features that will determine whether the model can make contact with the observed particle spectrum. We discuss the mechanism for giving the spin $\frac{3}{2}$ field a mass by the BEH mechanism, and analyze the remaining massless spin $\frac{1}{2}$ fermions, the global chiral symmetries, and the running couplings after symmetry breaking. We note that the smallest gluon mass matrix eigenval…

We explore the scenario in which the breaking of the electroweak symmetry is due to the simultaneous presence and interplay of a dynamical sector and an unnatural elementary Higgs. We introduce a low energy effective Lagrangian and constrain the various couplings via direct search limits and electroweak and flavor precision tests. We find that the model we study is a viable model of dynamical breaking of the electroweak symmetry.
We present an effective flavor model for the radiative generation of fermion masses and mixings based on a SU(5)xU(2) symmetry. We assume that the original source of flavor breaking resides in the supersymmetry breaking sector. Flavor violation is transmitted radiatively to the fermion Yukawa couplings at low energy through finite supersymmetric threshold corrections. This model can fit the fermion mass ratios and CKM matrix elements, explain the non-observation of proton decay, and overcome present constraints on flavor changing processes through an approximate radiative alignment between the…
Conventional quantum mechanics is described in terms of complex numbers. However, all physical quantities are real. This indicates, that the appearance of complex numbers in quantum mechanics may be the emergent phenomenon, i.e. complex numbers appear in the low energy description of the underlined high energy theory. We suggest a possible explanation of how this may occur. Namely, we consider the system of multi - component Majorana fermions. There is a natural description of this system in terms of real numbers only. In the vicinity of the topologically protected Fermi point this system is d…
The CP violation parameter $Re(ε'/ε)$ has previously been calculated in the standard model and the result depends on the top quark mass in an exciting way. We consider how the result is modified in two specific extensions of the standard model. The first adds only fermions, an extra vector-like quark doublet, and tends to reduce $Re(ε'/ε)$. The second contains three extended families with the third family treated differently and additional gauge bosons - the 331 model - and can accommodate larger values of $Re(ε'/ε)$ for a given $m_t$. When the experimental values of $m_t$ and $Re(ε'/ ε)$ are …
We investigate a proposal to address several outstanding shortcomings of the perturbative Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. The appeal of this proposal is that these features are a manifestation of the non-perturbative sector of the SM, requiring no assumptions about new physics beyond presently attainable experimental limits. In this thesis we apply non-perturbative techniques to two complementary models: a toy 4-fermion model containing explicit chiral symmetry-breaking terms and the quenched hypercharge gauge interaction. Understanding of how fermion mass, generations and CP-violatio…
The up-down splitting within quark families increases with the family number: m_u ~ m_d, m_c > m_s, m_t >> m_b. We show an approach that realizes this feature of the spectrum in a natural way. We suggest that the mass hierarchy is first generated by radiative effects in a sector of heavy isosinglet fermions, and then projected to the ordinary light fermions by means of a seesaw mixing. The hierarchy appears then inverted in the light fermion sector. We present a simple left-right symmetric gauge model in which the P- and CP-parities and an isotopical "up-down" symmetry are softly (or spontaneo…
An analysis of generating fermion masses via cubic couplings in SO(10) grand unification with a unified Higgs sector is given. The new framework utilizes a single pair of vector--spinor representation $144+\bar{144}$ to break the gauge symmetry all the way to $SU(3)_C \times U(1)_{em}$. Typically the matter--Higgs couplings in this framework are quartic and lead to naturally suppressed Yukawa couplings for the first two generations. Here we show that much larger third generation couplings naturally arise at the cubic level with additional matter in 10--plet and 45--plet representations of SO(1…
We consider an extended gauge group for the electroweak interaction: SU(2)_1 \times SU(2)_2 \times U(1)_Y where the first and second generations of fermions couple to SU(2)_1 while the third generation couples to SU(2)_2. Bounds based on precision observables and heavy gauge boson searchesare placed on the new parameters of the theory, and the potential of the theory to explain R_b and R_c is explored. We investigate processes that could produce observable signals at the LHC and NLC.
We explore the possibility of embedding supersymmetric GUT texture ideas into superstring models. We discuss the construction of GUT models using free fermionic strings. We find SO(10) models with adjoint scalars, three generations of chiral fermions, and a fundamental Higgs with a Yukawa coupling to only the third generation.
We consider an extended electroweak gauge group: SU(2)$_1 \times$ SU(2)$_2 \times$ U(1)$_Y$ where the first and second generation of fermions couple to SU(2)$_1$ and the third generation couples to SU(2)$_2$. Bounds based on heavy gauge boson searches and current precision electroweak measurements are placed on the masses of the new heavy gauge bosons. In particular we find that the mass of the heavy W boson can not be less than 800 GeV. For some range of the allowed parameter space, these heavy gauge bosons produce observable signals at the Tevatron and LEP-II.
We analyze the structure of quark and lepton mass matrices under the hypothesis that they are determined from a minimum principle applied to a generic potential invariant under the $\left[U(3)\right]^5\otimes {\mathcal O}(3)$ flavor symmetry, acting on Standard Model fermions and right-handed neutrinos. Unlike the quark case, we show that hierarchical masses for charged leptons are naturally accompanied by degenerate Majorana neutrinos with one mixing angle close to maximal, a second potentially large, a third one necessarily small, and one maximal relative Majorana phase. The scheme presented…
We propose a new framework for the observed flavor hierarchy and mixing based on left-right supersymmetry. The model contains the most minimal Higgs sector consisting only of gauge doublets which forbid the standard model Yukawa couplings. New mediator fields then connect the left- and right-chiral fermion sectors and result in effective tree level Yukawa couplings for the third generation charged fermions. The remaining fermions, including all neutrinos, acquire effective Yukawa couplings sourced by the supersymmetry breaking sector at loop level. We predict new TeV range scalars, as well as …
In the inverse seesaw scenario, several fermion singlets have a small Majorana mass term. We show such Majorana masses can be suppressed by some heavy fermion and/or Higgs singlets after a global symmetry is spontaneously broken. These interactions can also accommodate a leptogenesis mechanism to explain the cosmic baryon asymmetry.
In usual extended technicolor (ETC) theories based on the group ${\rm{SU}(N_{ETC}})_{ETC}$, the quarks of charge 2/3 and -1/3 and the charged leptons of all generations arise from ETC fermion multiplets transforming according to the fundamental representation. Here we investigate a different idea for the origin of SM fermion generations, in which quarks and charged leptons of different generations arise from ETC fermions transforming according to different representations of ${\rm{SU}(N_{ETC}})_{ETC}$. Although this mechanism would have the potential, {\it a priori}, to allow a reduction in th…
Using a simple three dimensional lattice four-fermion model we argue that massless fermions can become massive due to interactions without the need for any spontaneous symmetry breaking. Using large scale Monte Carlo calculations within our model, we show that this non-traditional mass generation mechanism occurs at a second order quantum critical point that separates phases with the same symmetries. Universality then suggests that the new origin for the fermion mass should be of wide interest.
