Sterile neutrinos coupling only to third-generation fermions are attractive dark matter candidates. In an EFT approach we demonstrate that they can generate the observed relic density without violating constraints from direct and indirect detection. Such an EFT represents a gauged third-generation $B-L$ model, as well as third-generation scalar or vector leptoquarks. LHC measurements naturally distinguish the different underlying models.
I will show, via effective field theory (EFT) techniques, that obtaining an observationally consistent relic density while evading stringent direct detection limits and maintaining $h_{125}$ phenomenology in an extended Higgs sector can be easily achieved. I will then map such an EFT to the low energy limit of the NMSSM with the Higgsinos integrated out. Both the singlino and the singlet-like CP-odd and even scalars in the NMSSM may play a relevant role in such a scenario, while being difficult to probe via conventional searches. The singlet sector of the general NMSSM can be mapped on to a 2H…
Chiral effective field theory (EFT) provides a systematic expansion for the coupling of WIMPs to nucleons at the momentum transfers relevant to direct cold dark matter detection. We derive the currents for spin-dependent WIMP scattering off nuclei at the one-body level and include the leading long-range two-body currents, which are predicted in chiral EFT. As an application, we calculate the structure factor for spin-dependent WIMP scattering off 129,131Xe nuclei, using nuclear interactions that have been developed to study nuclear structure and double-beta decays in this region. We provide th…
We assess the status of a wide class of WIMP dark matter (DM) models in light of the latest experimental results using the global fitting framework $\textsf{GAMBIT}$. We perform a global analysis of effective field theory (EFT) operators describing the interactions between a gauge-singlet Dirac fermion and the Standard Model quarks, the gluons and the photon. In this bottom-up approach, we simultaneously vary the coefficients of 14 such operators up to dimension 7, along with the DM mass, the scale of new physics and several nuisance parameters. Our likelihood functions include the latest data…
Guided by non-relativistic Effective Field Theory (EFT) we classify the most general spin-dependent interactions between a fermionic Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) and nuclei, and within this class of models we discuss the viability of an interpretation of the DAMA modulation result in terms of a signal from WIMP elastic scatterings using a halo-independent approach. We find that, although several relativistic EFT's can lead to a spin-dependent cross section, in some cases with an explicit, non-negligible dependence on the WIMP incoming velocity, three main scenarios can be singled…
We consider higher-dimensional effective (EFT) operators consisting of fermion dark matter (DM) connecting to Standard Model (SM) leptons upto dimension six. Considering all operators together and assuming the DM to undergo thermal freeze-out, we find out relic density allowed parameter space in terms of DM mass ($m_χ$) and New Physics (NP) scale ($Λ$) with one loop direct search constraints from XENON1T experiment. Allowed parameter space of the model is probed at the proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) via monophoton signal for both Dirac and Majorana cases, limited by the centre-of…
Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs, $χ$) are candidates for Dark Matter. WIMP searches at lepton colliders are complementary to searches at hadron colliders and direct and indirect detection, since they directly probe the coupling to electrons which a priori is independent of the coupling to hadrons. Like at hadron colliders, WIMP pair production can be observed via an additional tag particle, in particular a photon from initial state radiation ($e^+e^-\rightarrowχχγ$). With this technique WIMP masses to nearly half the centre-of-mass energy can be probed. Polarised beams are essentia…
Direct searches for WIMPs are sensitive to physics well below the weak scale. In the absence of light mediators, it is fruitful to apply an Effective Field Theory (EFT) approach accounting only for dark matter (DM) interactions with Standard Model (SM) fields. We consider a singlet fermion WIMP and effective operators up to dimension 6 which are generated at the mass scale of particles mediating DM interactions with the SM. We perform a one-loop Renormalization Group Evolution (RGE) analysis, evolving these effective operators from the mediators mass scale to the nuclear scales probed by direc…
We discuss strategies to make inferences on the thermal relic abundance of a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) when the same effective dimension-six operator that explains an experimental excess in direct detection is assumed to drive decoupling at freeze-out, and apply them to the proton-philic Spin-dependent Inelastic Dark Matter (pSIDM) scenario, a phenomenological set-up containing two states $χ_1$ and $χ_2$ with $m_{χ_2}>m_{χ_1}$ that we have shown in a previous paper to explain the DAMA effect in compliance with the constraints from other detectors. We update experimental constr…
We systematically explore the phenomenology of the recently proposed extended dark matter effective field theory (\eDMEFT), which allows for a consistent effective description of DM scenarios across different energy scales. The framework remains applicable at collider energies and is capable of reproducing the correct relic abundance by including a dynamical mediator particle to the dark sector, while maintaining correlations dictated by gauge invariance in a `model-independent' way. Taking into account present and future constraints from direct- and indirect-detection experiments, from collid…
The Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) paradigm is one of the most popular scenarios for Dark Matter (DM) theories that however is strongly constrained, in particular by direct detection experiments. We stick with the WIMP hypothesis and consider a Dirac fermion candidate for DM that interacts with the Standard Model (SM) via a spin-1 $Z'$, arising from the spontaneous breaking of an Abelian $U(1)'_μ$ gauge symmetry, under which only second generation leptons and the DM are appropriately charged. Due to the charge assignment, the model is gauge anomalous and can only be interpreted as …
We analyse the recent hints of Lepton Flavor Universality violations in semi-leptonic $B$ decays within a general EFT based on a $U(2)^n$ flavor symmetry acting on the light generations of SM fermions. We analyse in particular the consistency of these anomalies with the tight constraints on various low-energy observables in $B$ and $τ$ physics. We show that, with a moderate fine-tuning, a consistent picture for all low-energy observables can be obtained under the additional dynamical assumption that the NP sector is coupled preferentially to third generation SM fermions. We discuss how this dy…
A gluphilic scalar dark matter (GSDM) model has recently been proposed as an interesting vision for WIMP dark matter communicating dominantly with the Standard Model via gluons. We discuss the collider signature of a hard jet recoiling against missing momentum ("mono-jet") in such a construction, whose leading contribution is at one-loop. We compare the full one-loop computation with an effective field theory (EFT) treatment, and find (as expected) that EFT does not accurately describe regions of parameter space where mass of the colored mediator particles are comparable to the experimental cu…
We analyse the constraints on models of WIMP Dark Matter that can be derived from upper bounds on the "monojet" cross section at the LHC. These constraints were originally interpreted in the context of an effective field theory (EFT) where the Standard Model is extended by a dimension--6 operator whose coefficient is $1/Λ^2$. We show that combining the 8 TeV data of the ATLAS and CMS collaborations improves the bounds only slightly. We then analyze this final state in the context of simplified models with $s-$channel mediator. We show that if the decay width of the mediator is small, these sim…
We consider an effective field theory framework with three standard model (SM) gauge singlet right handed neutrinos, and an additional SM gauge singlet scalar field. The framework successfully generates eV masses of the light neutrinos via seesaw mechanism, and accommodates a feebly interacting massive particle (FIMP) as dark matter candidate. Two of the gauge singlet neutrinos participate in neutrino mass generation, while the third gauge singlet neutrino is a FIMP dark matter. We explore the correlation between the $\textit{vev}$ of the gauge singlet scalar field which translates as mass of …
In this paper, as the second part of the third step of our study on developing data analysis procedures for using 3-dimensional information offered by directional direct Dark Matter detection experiments in the future, we investigate the angular distributions of the recoil direction (flux) and the recoil energy of the Monte Carlo simulated WIMP-scattered target nuclei observed in different celestial coordinate systems. The "anisotropy" and the "directionality" ("annual" modulation) of the angular recoil-direction/energy distributions will be demonstrated. We will also discuss their dependences…
We determine the effective theory of neutrino-electron and neutrino-quark scattering and provide the most precise up-to-date prediction for neutrino-electron scattering cross sections quantifying errors for the first time to be of order $0.2-0.4~\%$. Radiative corrections in the theory with electron and neutrinos only involve three effective couplings. One is the Fermi constant which is known with sub-ppm accuracy. Another one has a small error of order $0.02~\%$. The uncertainty of the third one is limited by the knowledge of hadronic contributions to charge-isospin vector-vector correlation …
In this paper, as the third part of the third step of our study on developing data analysis procedures for using 3-dimensional information offered by directional direct Dark Matter detection experiments in the future, we introduce a 3-dimensional effective velocity distribution of halo Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), which, instead of the theoretically prediction of the entire Galactic Dark Matter particles, describes the actual velocity distribution of WIMPs scattering off (specified) target nuclei in an underground detector. Its target and WIMP-mass dependences as well as ("ann…
We present nuclear structure factors that describe the generalized spin-independent coupling of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) to nuclei. Our results are based on state-of-the-art nuclear structure calculations using the large-scale nuclear shell model. Starting from quark- and gluon-level operators, we consider all possible coherently enhanced couplings of spin-1/2 and spin-0 WIMPs to one and two nucleons up to third order in chiral effective field theory. This includes a comprehensive discussion of the structure factors corresponding to the leading two-nucleon currents covering…
If dark matter consists of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), dark matter subhalos in the Milky Way could be detectable as gamma-ray point sources due to WIMP annihilation. In this work, we perform an updated study of the detectability of dark matter subhalos as gamma-ray sources with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi LAT). We use the results of the Via Lactea II simulation, scaled to the Planck 2015 cosmological parameters, to predict the local dark matter subhalo distribution. Under optimistic assumptions for the WIMP parameters --- a 40 GeV particle annihilating to $b\bar{b}$…
We present a common chiral power-counting scheme for vector, axial-vector, scalar, and pseudoscalar WIMP-nucleon interactions, and derive all one- and two-body currents up to third order in the chiral expansion. Matching our amplitudes to non-relativistic effective field theory, we find that chiral symmetry predicts a hierarchy amongst the non-relativistic operators. Moreover, we identify interaction channels where two-body currents that so far have not been accounted for become relevant.
We generalize in several directions our recent analysis of the limitations to the use of the effective field theory approach to study dark matter at the LHC. Firstly, we study the full list of operators connecting fermion DM to quarks and gluons, corresponding to integrating out a heavy mediator in the $s$-channel; secondly, we provide analytical results for the validity of the EFT description for both $\sqrt{s}=8$ {\rm TeV} and $14$ {\rm TeV}; thirdly, we make use of a MonteCarlo event generator approach to assess the validity of our analytical conclusions. We apply our results to revisit the…
Direct detection of Milky Way wimps are discussed within the framework of R-parity conserving SUGRA models with grand unification at M_G. Two questions are discussed: what SUGRA models can account for the DAMA data if this data is confirmed, and is the full SUGRA parameter space accessible to future planned detectors. Experimental constraints of the Higgs mass bound, the b-> sγbound, relic density constraints (including all co-annihilation channels), etc. are imposed. In addition, the effect of the possible muon g - 2 anomaly are examined. For mSUGRA, we find that the Higgs mass and b\to sγcon…
We investigate the possibility that dark matter is made of heavy Dirac neutrinos with mass in the range [O(1) GeV- a few TeV] and with suppressed but non-zero coupling to the Standard Model Z as well as a coupling to an additional Z' gauge boson. The first part of this paper provides a model-independent analysis for the relic density and direct detection in terms of four main parameters: the mass, the couplings to the Z, to the Z' and to the Higgs. These WIMP candidates arise naturally as Kaluza-Klein states in extra-dimensional models with extended electroweak gauge group SU(2)_L* SU(2)_R * U…
Atmospheric and solar neutrinos scattering coherently off target nuclei will be an important background source for the next generation of direct dark matter searches. In this work we focus on calcium tungstate as target material. For comparison with existing works we calculate the neutrino floor indicating which sensitivities can be reached before the neutrino background appears. In addition, we investigate the sensitivities of future direct dark matter searches using CRESST-II like detectors. Extending previous works we take into account achievable energy resolutions and thresholds as well as…
Supersymmetric models with t-b-τYukawa unification at M_{GUT} qualitatively predict a sparticle mass spectrum including first and second generation scalars at the 3--15 TeV scale, third generation scalars at the (few) TeV scale and gluinos in the sub-TeV range. The neutralino relic density in these models typically turns out to lie far above the measured dark matter abundance, prompting the suggestion that instead dark matter is composed of an axion/axino mixture. We explore the axion and thermal and non-thermal axino dark matter abundance in Yukawa-unified SUSY models. We find in this scenari…
