In this paper, we present an empirical study of using pre-trained BERT models for the relation extraction task at the VLSP 2020 Evaluation Campaign. We applied two state-of-the-art BERT-based models: R-BERT and BERT model with entity starts. For each model, we compared two pre-trained BERT models: FPTAI/vibert and NlpHUST/vibert4news. We found that NlpHUST/vibert4news model significantly outperforms FPTAI/vibert for the Vietnamese relation extraction task. Finally, we proposed an ensemble model that combines R-BERT and BERT with entity starts. Our proposed ensemble model slightly improved against two single models on the development data and the test data provided by the task organizers.

This paper describes an efficient approach to improve the accuracy of a named entity recognition system for Vietnamese. The approach combines regular expressions over tokens and a bidirectional inference method in a sequence labelling model. The proposed method achieves an overall $F_1$ score of 89.66% on a test set of an evaluation campaign, organized in late 2016 by the Vietnamese Language and Speech Processing (VLSP) community.
This paper presents a state-of-the-art system for Vietnamese Named Entity Recognition (NER). By incorporating automatic syntactic features with word embeddings as input for bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM), our system, although simpler than some deep learning architectures, achieves a much better result for Vietnamese NER. The proposed method achieves an overall F1 score of 92.05% on the test set of an evaluation campaign, organized in late 2016 by the Vietnamese Language and Speech Processing (VLSP) community. Our named entity recognition system outperforms the best previous sys…
This paper demonstrates end-to-end neural network architectures for Vietnamese named entity recognition. Our best model is a combination of bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Conditional Random Field (CRF), using pre-trained word embeddings as input, which achieves an F1 score of 88.59% on a standard test set. Our system is able to achieve a comparable performance to the first-rank system of the VLSP campaign without using any syntactic or hand-crafted features. We also give an extensive empirical study on using common deep learning models for V…

Named entity recognition (NER) plays an important role in text-based information retrieval. In this paper, we combine Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) \cite{hochreiter1997,schuster1997} with Conditional Random Field (CRF) \cite{lafferty2001} to create a novel deep learning model for the NER problem. Each word as input of the deep learning model is represented by a Word2vec-trained vector. A word embedding set trained from about one million articles in 2018 collected through a Vietnamese news portal (baomoi.com). In addition, we concatenate a Word2Vec\cite{mikolov2013}-trained vec…

In recent years, Vietnamese Named Entity Recognition (NER) systems have had a great breakthrough when using Deep Neural Network methods. This paper describes the primary errors of the state-of-the-art NER systems on Vietnamese language. After conducting experiments on BLSTM-CNN-CRF and BLSTM-CRF models with different word embeddings on the Vietnamese NER dataset. This dataset is provided by VLSP in 2016 and used to evaluate most of the current Vietnamese NER systems. We noticed that BLSTM-CNN-CRF gives better results, therefore, we analyze the errors on this model in detail. Our error-analysis…

Machine reading comprehension (MRC) is a challenging task in natural language processing that makes computers understanding natural language texts and answer questions based on those texts. There are many techniques for solving this problems, and word representation is a very important technique that impact most to the accuracy of machine reading comprehension problem in the popular languages like English and Chinese. However, few studies on MRC have been conducted in low-resource languages such as Vietnamese. In this paper, we conduct several experiments on neural network-based model to under…
We present the first multi-task learning model -- named PhoNLP -- for joint Vietnamese part-of-speech (POS) tagging, named entity recognition (NER) and dependency parsing. Experiments on Vietnamese benchmark datasets show that PhoNLP produces state-of-the-art results, outperforming a single-task learning approach that fine-tunes the pre-trained Vietnamese language model PhoBERT (Nguyen and Nguyen, 2020) for each task independently. We publicly release PhoNLP as an open-source toolkit under the Apache License 2.0. Although we specify PhoNLP for Vietnamese, our PhoNLP training and evaluation com…

This study presents our approach on the automatic Vietnamese image captioning for healthcare domain in text processing tasks of Vietnamese Language and Speech Processing (VLSP) Challenge 2021, as shown in Figure 1. In recent years, image captioning often employs a convolutional neural network-based architecture as an encoder and a long short-term memory (LSTM) as a decoder to generate sentences. These models perform remarkably well in different datasets. Our proposed model also has an encoder and a decoder, but we instead use a Swin Transformer in the encoder, and a LSTM combined with an atten…

In the text classification problem, the imbalance of labels in datasets affect the performance of the text-classification models. Practically, the data about user comments on social networking sites not altogether appeared - the administrators often only allow positive comments and hide negative comments. Thus, when collecting the data about user comments on the social network, the data is usually skewed about one label, which leads the dataset to become imbalanced and deteriorate the model's ability. The data augmentation techniques are applied to solve the imbalance problem between classes o…

Converting written texts into their spoken forms is an essential problem in any text-to-speech (TTS) systems. However, building an effective text normalization solution for a real-world TTS system face two main challenges: (1) the semantic ambiguity of non-standard words (NSWs), e.g., numbers, dates, ranges, scores, abbreviations, and (2) transforming NSWs into pronounceable syllables, such as URL, email address, hashtag, and contact name. In this paper, we propose a new two-phase normalization approach to deal with these challenges. First, a model-based tagger is designed to detect NSWs. Then…

Natural language processing is a fast-growing field of artificial intelligence. Since the Transformer was introduced by Google in 2017, a large number of language models such as BERT, GPT, and ELMo have been inspired by this architecture. These models were trained on huge datasets and achieved state-of-the-art results on natural language understanding. However, fine-tuning a pre-trained language model on much smaller datasets for downstream tasks requires a carefully-designed pipeline to mitigate problems of the datasets such as lack of training data and imbalanced data. In this paper, we prop…

Large-scale pre-trained language model such as BERT has achieved great success in language understanding tasks. However, it remains an open question how to utilize BERT for language generation. In this paper, we present a novel approach, Conditional Masked Language Modeling (C-MLM), to enable the finetuning of BERT on target generation tasks. The finetuned BERT (teacher) is exploited as extra supervision to improve conventional Seq2Seq models (student) for better text generation performance. By leveraging BERT's idiosyncratic bidirectional nature, distilling knowledge learned in BERT can encou…
