The Event Horizon Telescope's image of the M87 black hole provides an exciting opportunity to study black hole physics. Since a black hole's event horizon absorbs all electromagnetic waves, it is difficult to actively probe the horizon's existence. However, with the help of a family of extremely compact, horizon-less objects, named gravastars", whose external space-times nearly identical to those of black holes, one can test the absence of event horizons: absences of additional features that arise due to the existence of the gravastar, or its surface, can be used as quantitative evidence for black holes. We apply Gralla et al.'s approach to studying black hole images to study the images of two types of gravastars: transparent ones and reflective ones. In both cases, the transmission of rays through gravastars, or their reflections on their surfaces, lead to more rings in their images. For simple emission models, where the redshifted emissivity of the disk is peaked at a particular radius r-peak, the position of a series of rings can be related in a simple manner to light ray propagation: a ring shows up around impact parameter b whenever rays incident from infinity at b intersects the disk at r-peak. We show that additional rings will appear in the images of transparent and reflective gravastars. In particular, one of the additional rings for the reflective gravastar is due to the prompt reflection of light on the gravastar surface and appears to be well separated from the others. This can be a robust feature, which may be reliably used to constrain the reflectivity of the black hole's horizon.
We have studied the shadows of a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a Bach-Weyl ring through the backward ray-tracing method. The presence of Bach-Weyl ring leads to that the photon dynamical system is non-integrable and then chaos would appear in the photon motion, which affects sharply the black hole shadow. The size and shape the black hole shadow depend on the black hole parameter, the Bach-Weyl ring mass and the Weyl radius between black hole and ring. Some self-similar fractal structures also appear in the black hole shadow, which originates from the chaotic lensing. We also study th…
We calculate the photon sphere $r_{ph}$ and critical curve $b_c$ for the quantum corrected Schwarzschild black hole, finding that they violate an universal inequalities proved for asymptotically flat black holes which satisfy null energy condition in the framework of Einstein gravity. This violation seem to be a common phenomenon when considering quantum modification of Einstein gravity. Furthermore, we study the shadows, lensing rings and photon rings in the quantum corrected Schwarzschild black hole. The violation leads to a larger bright lensing ring in the observational appearance of thin …
The motion of photons around black holes determines the shape of shadow and match the ringdown properties of a perturbed black hole. Observations of shadows and ringdown waveforms will reveal the nature of black holes. In this paper, we study the motion of photons in a general parametrized metric beyond the Kerr hypothesis. We investigated the radius and frequency of the photon circular orbits on the equatorial plane and obtained fitted formula with varied parameters. The Lyapunov exponent which connects to the decay rate of the ringdown amplitude is also calculated. We also analyzed the shape…
We have studied the spacetime of a Kerr black hole immersed in Melvin magnetic field, and found not only unstable light rings could exist, but also stable light rings could exist. Both the prograde and retrograde unstable light rings radiuses increase with the magnetic field parameter $B$, but it is the opposite for stable light rings. The existence of unstable, stable light rings depend on both the rotation parameter $a$ and the magnetic field parameter $B$. For a certain $a$, there are both the prograde and retroprade unstable (stable) light rings when $B$ is less than a critical value $B_{c…

In this paper, by taking the accretions into account, the observational shadows and rings casted by the Brane-world black hole are numerically investigated when the observer located at the cosmological horizon. The results here show that the radius $r_p$ of photon sphere increased with cosmological parameter $α$ and dark matter parameter $β$, while the impact parameter $b_p$ decreased with $α$ and increased with $β$. For the thin-disk accretion, it turns out that the total observed intensity are mainly composed of the direct emission, while lensing ring and photon ring only contribute a small …
We study the shadows of the fully non-linear, asymptotically flat Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet (EdGB) black holes (BHs), for both static and rotating solutions. We find that, in all cases, these shadows are smaller than for comparable Kerr BHs, i.e. with the same total mass and angular momentum under similar observation conditions. In order to compare both cases we provide quantitative shadow parameters, observing in particular that the differences in the shadows mean radii are never larger than the percent level. Therefore, generically, EdGB BHs cannot be excluded by (near future) shadow obs…
The presence of a bright "photon ring" surrounding a dark "black hole shadow" has been discussed as an important feature of the observational appearance of emission originating near a black hole. We clarify the meaning and relevance of these heuristics with analytic calculations and numerical toy models. The standard usage of the term "shadow" describes the appearance of a black hole illuminated from all directions, including from behind the observer. A backlit black hole casts a somewhat larger shadow. Neither shadow heuristic is particularly relevant to understanding the appearance of emissi…
In this paper, under the illumination of thin disk accretion, we have employed the ray-tracing method to carefully investigate shadows and rings of the Kehagias-Sfetsos(KS) black hole in deformed Hořava-Lifshitz(HL) gravity. The results show that the event horizon $r_+$, the radius $r_p$ and impact parameter $b_{p}$ of photon sphere are all decreased with the increase of the HL parameter $ω$, but the effective potential increases. And, it also turns out that the trajectories of light rays emitted from the north pole direction are defined as the direct emission, lensing ring and photon ring of …

Cuspy shadow was first reported for hairy rotating black holes, whose metrics deviate significantly from the Kerr one. The non-smooth edge of the shadow is attributed to a transition between different branches of unstable but bounded orbits, known as the fundamental photon orbits, which end up at the light rings. In searching for a minimal theoretical setup to reproduce such a salient feature, in this work, we devise a toy model with axisymmetry, a slowly rotating Kerr black hole enveloped by a thin slowly rotating dark matter shell. Despite its simplicity, we show rich structures regarding fu…
We study the light rings and shadows of an uniparametric family of spherically symmetric geometries interpolating between the Schwarzschild solution, a regular black hole, and a traversable wormhole, and dubbed as black bounces, all of them sharing the same critical impact parameter. We consider the ray-tracing method in order to study the impact parameter regions corresponding to the direct, lensed, and photon ring emission, finding a broadening of all these regions for black bounce solutions as compared to the Schwarzschild one. Using this, we determine the optical appearance of black bounce…
The photon ring, shadow and observational appearance of the emission originating near a charged black-bounce are investigated. Based on the geodesic analysis, we determine the upper and lower limits of critical impact parameters of a charged black-bounce. In particular, we find that the charged black-bounce shares the same critical impact parameter with the Reissner-Nordstöm black hole. In addition, we classify the light trajectories coming from the region near the charged black-bounce by utilizing the rays tracing procedure, and then investigate the observational appearance of the emissions f…
The apparent angular size of the shadow of a black hole in an expanding Universe is redshift-dependent. Since cosmological redshifts change with time - known as the redshift drift - all redshift-dependent quantities acquire a time-dependence, and a fortiori so do black hole shadows. We find a mathematical description of the black hole shadow drift and show that the amplitude of this effect is of order $10^{-16}$ per day for M87$^{\star}$. While this effect is small, we argue that its non-detection can be used to constrain the accretion rate around supermassive black holes, as well as a novel p…
Ultralight bosons can affect the dynamics of spinning black holes (BHs) via superradiant instability, which can lead to a time evolution of the supermassive BH shadow. We study prospects for witnessing the superradiance-induced BH shadow evolution, considering ultralight vector and tensor fields. We introduce two observables sensitive to the shadow time-evolution: the shadow drift, and the variation in the azimuthal angle lapse associated to the photon ring autocorrelation. The two observables are shown to be highly complementary, depending on the observer's inclination angle. Focusing on the …
In this paper, by exploring the photon motion in the region near the Bardeen black hole, the shadow and observation properties of the black hole surrounded by various accretion models are studied. We analyzed the changes in shadow imaging and observation luminosity when the relevant physical parameters are changed. For the different spherical accretions background, one can find that the radius of shadow and the position of photon sphere do not change, but the observation intensity of shadow in the infalling accretion model is significantly lower than that of the static case. When the black hol…

We investigate the effects of quintessence dark energy on the shadows of black hole, surrounded by various profiles of accretions. For the thin disk accretion, the images of the black hole comprises the dark region and bright region, including direct emission, lensing rings and photon rings. Although their details depend on the form of the emission, generically, the direct emission plays a major role for the observed brightness of the black hole, while the lensing ring makes a small contribution and photon ring makes a negligible contribution. The existence of cosmological horizon also plays a…

Simulated images of a black hole surrounded by optically thin emission typically display two main features: a central brightness depression and a narrow, bright "photon ring" consisting of strongly lensed images superposed on top of the direct emission. The photon ring closely tracks a theoretical curve on the image plane corresponding to light rays that asymptote to unstably bound photon orbits around the black hole. This critical curve has a size and shape that are purely governed by the Kerr geometry; in contrast, the size, shape, and depth of the observed brightness depression all depend o…
As an extension of our previous work, which investigated the shadows of the Ellis wormhole surrounded by nonrotating dust, in this paper we study wormhole shadows in rotating dust flow. First, we derive steady-state solutions of slowly rotating dust surrounding the wormhole by solving relativistic Euler equations. Solving null geodesic equations and radiation transfer equations, we investigate the images of the wormhole surrounded by dust for the above steady-state solutions. Because the Ellis wormhole spacetime possesses unstable circular orbits of photons, a bright ring appears in the image,…
We discuss construction and observational properties of wormholes obtained by connecting two Reissner-Nordstrom spacetimes with distinct mass and charge parameters. These objects are spherically symmetric, but not reflection-symmetric, as the connected spacetimes differ. The reflection-asymmetric wormholes may reflect a significant fraction of the infalling radiation back to the spacetime of its origin. We interpret this effect in a simple framework of the effective photon potential. Depending on the model parameters, image of such a wormhole seen by a distant observer (its "shadow") may conta…
