With continuing improvements on the quality of fabricated quantum devices, it becomes increasingly crucial to analyze noisy quantum process in greater details such as characterizing the non-Markovianity in a quantitative manner. In this work, we propose an experimental protocol, termed Spectral Transfer Tensor Maps (SpecTTM), to accurately predict the RHP non-Markovian measure of any Pauli channels without state-preparation and measurement (SPAM) errors. In fact, for Pauli channels, SpecTTM even allows the reconstruction of highly-precised noise power spectrum for qubits. At last, we also discuss how SpecTTM can be useful to approximately characterize non-Markovianity of non-Pauli channels via Pauli twirling in an optimal basis.
We show how to learn structures of generic, non-Markovian, quantum stochastic processes using a tensor network based machine learning algorithm. We do this by representing the process as a matrix product operator (MPO) and train it with a database of local input states at different times and the corresponding time-nonlocal output state. In particular, we analyze a qubit coupled to an environment and predict output state of the system at different time, as well as reconstruct the full system process. We show how the bond dimension of the MPO, a measure of non-Markovianity, depends on the proper…

Nanoscale devices - either biological or artificial - operate in a regime where the usual assumptions of a structureless, Markovian, bath do not hold. Being able to predict and study the dynamics of such systems is crucial and is usually done by tracing out the bath degrees of freedom, which implies losing information about the environment. To go beyond these approaches we use a numerically exact method relying on a Matrix Product State representation of the quantum state of a system and its environment to keep track of the bath explicitly. This method is applied to a specific example of inter…
We utilize the novel non-Markovian quantum jump (NMQJ) approach to stochastically simulate exciton dynamics derived from a time-convolutionless master equation. For relevant parameters and time scales, the time-dependent, oscillatory decoherence rates can have negative regions, a signature of non-Markovian behavior and of the revival of coherences. This can lead to non-Markovian population beatings for a dimer system at room temperature. We show that strong exciton-phonon coupling to low frequency modes can considerably modify transport properties. We observe increased exciton transport, which…
We explore signatures of the non-Markovianity in the time-resolved energy transfer processes for quantum open systems. Focusing on typical systems such as the exact solvable damped Jaynes-Cummings model and the general spin-boson model, we establish quantitative links between the time-resolved energy current and the symmetric logarithmic derivative quantum Fisher information (SLD-QFI) flow, one of measures quantifying the non-Markovianity, within the framework of non-Markovian master equations in time-local forms. From the relationships, we find in the damped Jaynes-Cummings model that the SLD…
The weak-coupled two-level open quantum system described by non-Markovian Time-convolution-less master equation is investigated in this paper. The cut-off frequency, coupling constant and transition frequency, which impact on the system's decay rate, coherence factor and purity, are investigated. The appropriate parameters used in system simulation experiments are determined by comparing analysis results of different values of parameters for the effects of system performance. The control laws used to transfer the system states are designed on the basis of the Lyapunov stability theorem. Numeri…
We propose simple protocols for performing quantum noise spectroscopy based on the method of transfer tensor maps (TTM), [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 110401 (2014)]. The TTM approach is a systematic way to deduce the memory kernel of a time-nonlocal quantum master equation via quantum process tomography. With access to the memory kernel it is possible to (1) assess the non-Markovianity of a quantum process, (2) reconstruct the noise spectral density beyond pure dephasing models, and (3) investigate collective decoherence in multiqubit devices. We illustrate the usefulness of TTM spectroscopy on the …
We study at the single-photon level the nonreciprocal excitation transfer between emitters coupled with a common waveguide. Non-Markovian retarded effects are taken into account due to the large separation distance between different emitter-waveguide coupling ports. It is shown that the excitation transfer between the emitters of a small-atom dimer can be obviously nonreciprocal by introducing between them a coherent coupling channel with nontrivial coupling phase. We prove that for dimer models the nonreciprocity cannot coexist with the decoherence-free giant-atom structure although the latte…
There has long been interest to control the transfer of population between specified quantum states. Recent work has optimized the control law for closed system population transfer by using a gradient ascent pulse engineer- ing algorithm [1]. Here, a spin-boson model consisting of two-level atoms which interact with the dissipative environment, is investigated. With opti- mal control, the quantum system can invert the populations of the quantum logic states. The temperature plays an important role in controlling popula- tion transfer. At low temperatures the control has active performance, whi…
A Markov assumption considers a physical system memoryless to simplify its dynamics. Whereas memory effect or the non-Markovian phenomenon is more general in nature. In the quantum regime, it is challenging to define or quantify the non-Markovianity because the measurement of a quantum system often interferes with it. We simulate the open quantum dynamics in a superconducting processor, then characterize and quantify the non-Markovian process. With the complete set of intervening projections and the final measurement of the qubit, a restricted process tensor can be determined to account for th…
Based on tensor network realizations of path integrals reducing exponential memory scaling to polynomial efficiency and a Liouville space implementation of a time-discrete quantum memory, we investigate a quantum system simultaneously exposed to two structured reservoirs. For this purpose, we employ a numerically exact quasi-2D tensor network combining both diagonal and off-diagonal system-reservoir interactions with a twofold memory for continuous and discrete retardation effects. As a possible example, we study the non-Markovian dynamical interplay between discrete photonic feedback and stru…

In the classical domain, it is well-known that divisibility does not imply that a stochastic process is Markovian. However, for quantum processes, divisibility is often considered to be synonymous with Markovianity. We show that completely positive (CP) divisible quantum processes can still involve non-Markovian temporal correlations, that we then fully classify using the recently developed process tensor formalism, which generalizes the theory of stochastic processes to the quantum domain.
We calculate the exact many-body time dynamics of polaritonic states supported by an optical cavity filled with organic molecules. Optical, vibrational and radiative processes are treated on an equal footing employing the Time-Dependent Variational Matrix Product States algorithm. We demonstrate signatures of non-Markovian vibronic dynamics and its fingerprints in the far-field photon emission spectrum at arbitrary light-matter interaction scales, ranging from the weak to the strong coupling regimes. We analyse both the single and many-molecule cases, showing the crucial role played by the col…
Relying on an exact time evolution scheme, we identify a novel transient energy transfer phe- nomenon in an exactly-solvable quantum microscopic model consisting of a three-level system coupled to two non-Markovian zero-temperature bosonic baths through two separable quantum channels. The dynamics of this model can be solved exactly using the quantum-state-diffusion equation formalism, demonstrating finite intervals of unidirectional energy flow across the system, typically, from the non-Markovian environment towards the more Markovian bath. Furthermore, when introducing a spatial asymmetry in…
A quantum kinetic theory of the spin transfer between carriers and Mn atoms in a Mn doped diluted magnetic semiconductor is presented. It turns out that the typical memory time associated with these processes is orders of magnitude shorter than the time scale of the spin transfer. Nevertheless, Markovian rate equations, which are obtained by neglecting the memory, work well only for bulk systems. For quantum wells and wires the quantum kinetic results qualitatively deviate from the Markovian limit under certain conditions. Instead of a monotonic decay of an initially prepared excess electron s…
In this study, we explore optimal environments for efficient EET between end sites in a number of dimer and trimer model pigment-protein molecular aggregates when the EET dynamics is modeled by the HEOM-method. For these optimal environmental parameters, we further quantify the non-Markovianity by the BLP-measure to elucidate its possible connection to efficient EET. We also quantify coherence in the pigment systems by means of the measure l1-norm of coherence to analyze its interplay with environmental effects when EET efficiency is maximal. Our aim is to investigate possible environmental de…
In this paper, we investigate the non-Markovian dynamics of a model to mimic the excitation energy transfer (EET) between chromophores in photosynthesis systems. The numerical path integral method is used. This method includes the non-Markovian effects of the environmental affects and it does not need the perturbation approximation in solving the dynamics of systems of interest. It implies that the coherence helps the EET between chromophores through lasting the transfer time rather than enhances the transfer rate of the EET. In particular, the non-Markovian environment greatly increase the ef…
Capturing non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems is generally a challenging problem, especially for strongly-interacting many-body systems. In this work, we combine recently developed non-Markovian quantum state diffusion techniques with tensor network methods to address this challenge. As a first example, we explore a Hubbard-Holstein model with dissipative phonon modes, where this new approach allows us to quantitatively assess how correlations spread in the presence of non-Markovian dissipation in a 1D many-body system. We find regimes where correlation growth can be enhanced by the…

In the path integral formulation of the evolution of an open quantum system coupled to a Gaussian, non-interacting environment, the dynamical contribution of the latter is encoded in an object called the influence functional. Here, we relate the influence functional to the process tensor -- a more general representation of a quantum stochastic process -- describing the evolution. We then use this connection to motivate a tensor network algorithm for the simulation of multi-time correlations in open systems, building on recent work where the influence functional is represented in terms of time …
An exact solution to the interaction between two emitters mediated by Förster resonance energy transfer is presented. The system is comprised of a one-dimensional optical waveguide with two embedded two-level systems and is analyzed using a recently developed quantum-field theoretical approach. This exactly solvable model features several competing mechanisms that lead to a rich physical behavior such as, for instance, the possibility to change from an attractive to a repulsive interaction. Our nonperturbative analysis allows on very general grounds to describe the interaction as a truly non-M…
Excitation energy transfer (EET) and electron transfer (ET) are crucially involved in photosynthetic processes. In reality, the photosynthetic reaction center constitutes an open quantum system of EET and ET, which manifests an interplay of pigments, solar light and phonon baths. So far theoretical studies have been mainly based on master equation approaches in the Markovian condition. The non-Markovian environmental effect, which may play a crucial role, has not been sufficiently considered. In this work, we propose a mixed dynamic approach to investigate this open system. The influence of ph…
Understanding heat transfer between a quantum system and its environment is of undisputed importance if reliable quantum devices are to be constructed. Here, we investigate the heat transfer between system and bath in non-Markovian open systems in the process of adiabatic speedup. Using the quantum state diffusion equation method, the heat current, energy current, and power are calculated during free evolution and under external control of the system. While the heat current increases with increasing system-bath coupling strength and bath temperature, it can be restricted by the non-Markovian n…
It is known that the time evolution of a subsystem from an initial state to two later times, t1, t2 (t2 > t1), are both completely positive (CP) but it is shown here that in the intermediate times between t1 and t2, in general, it need not be CP. This reveals the key to the Markov (if CP) and nonMarkov (if NCP) avataras of the intermediate dynamics. This is brought out based on A and B dynamical maps - without resorting to Master equation approach. The choice of tensor product form for the global initial state points towards the system-environment interaction dynamics as the sole cause for Mar…
Enabled by rapidly developing quantum technologies, it is possible to network quantum systems at a much larger scale in the near future. To deal with non-Markovian dynamics that is prevalent in solid-state devices, we propose a general transfer function based framework for modeling linear quantum networks, in which signal flow graphs are applied to characterize the network topology by flow of quantum signals. We define a noncommutative ring $\mathbb{D}$ and use its elements to construct Hamiltonians, transformations and transfer functions for both active and passive systems. The signal flow gr…
A geometric description of the space of states of a finite-dimensional quantum system and of the Markovian evolution associated with the Kossakowski-Lindblad operator is presented. This geometric setting is based on two composition laws on the space of observables defined by a pair of contravariant tensor fields. The first one is a Poisson tensor field that encodes the commutator product and allows us to develop a Hamiltonian mechanics. The other tensor field is symmetric, encodes the Jordan product and provides the variances and covariances of measures associated with the observables. This te…
We analyze efficiency of excitation energy transfer in photosynthetic complexes in transient and stationary setting. In the transient setting the absorption process is modeled as an individual event resulting in a subsequent relaxation dynamics. In the stationary setting the absorption is a continuous stationary process, leading to the nonequilibrium steady state. We show that, as far as the efficiency is concerned, both settings can be considered to be the same, as they result in almost identical efficiency. We also show that non-Markovianity has no effect on the resulting efficiency, i.e., c…
The initial stages of the evolution of an open quantum system encode the key information of its underlying dynamical correlations, which in turn can predict the trajectory at later stages. We propose a general approach based on non-Markovian dynamical maps to extract this information from the initial trajectories and compress it into non-Markovian transfer tensors. Assuming time-translational invariance, the tensors can be used to accurately and efficiently propagate the state of the system to arbitrarily long timescales. The non-Markovian Transfer Tensor Method (TTM) demonstrates the coherent…
Many areas of physics rely upon adiabatic state transfer protocols, allowing a quantum state to be moved between different physical systems for storage and retrieval or state manipulation. However, these state-transfer protocols suffer from dephasing and dissipation. In this thesis we go beyond the standard open-systems treatment of quantum dissipation allowing us to consider non-Markovian environments. We use adiabatic perturbation theory in order to give analytic descriptions for various quantum state-transfer protocols. The leading-order corrections will give rise to additional terms adding…
We consider population transfer in open quantum systems, which are described by quantum dynamical semigroups (QDS). Using second order perturbation theory of the Lindblad equation, we show that it depends on a weak external field only through the field's autocorrelation function (ACF), which is phase independent. Therefore, for leading order in perturbation, QDS cannot support dependence of the population transfer on the phase properties of weak fields. We examine an example of weak-field phase-dependent population transfer, and show that the phase-dependence comes from the next order in the p…
In this paper, the non-Markovian quantum dynamics of a coupled $N$-cavity model is studied based on the quantum state diffusion (QSD) approach. The time-local Diósi-Gisin-Strunz equation and the corresponding exact master equation are derived for the model consisting of a coupled cavity array. The resulting QSD equation serves as a stochastic solution to a genuine $N$-partite continuous-variable (CV) system. Several non-Markovian effects are studied in two interesting examples -- two-cavity and three-cavity, under different boundary conditions. We have shown that the environment-memory can fac…
We explore the nonunital non-Markovian dynamics of a qubit immersed in a spin bath. The nonunital environmental effects on the precisions of quantum parameter estimation are investigated. The time-dependent transfer matrix and inhomogeneity vector are obtained for the description of the open dynamical process. The evolution of the coherent vectors for a qubit is studied so as to geometrically demonstrate the nonunital non-Markovian effects. The revivals of angles for the fidelity between a maximal mixed state and an arbitrary trajectory state are presented in the nonunital non-Markovian dynami…
Efficient simulations of the dynamics of open systems is of wide importance for quantum science and tech-nology. Here, we introduce a generalization of the transfer-tensor, or discrete-time memory kernel, formalism to multi-time measurement scenarios. The transfer-tensor method sets out to compute the state of an open few-body quantum system at long times, given that only short-time system trajectories are available. Here, we showthat the transfer-tensor method can be extended to processes which include multiple interrogations (e.g. measurements) of the open system dynamics as it evolves, allo…
We propose a systematic scheme to engineer quantum states of a quantum system governed by a time-convolutionless non-Markovian master equation. According to the idea of reverse engineering, the general algebraic equation to determine the control parameters, such as coherent and incoherent control fields, is presented. Without artificially engineering the time-dependent decay rates and retaining the environment-induced Lamb shifts, the quantum state can still be transferred into the target state in a finite period of time along an arbitrary designed trajectory strictly in Hilbert space. As an a…
We theoretically investigate an exciton-coupled electron transfer (XCET) process that is conversion of an exciton into a charge transfer state. This conversion happens in an exciton transfer (XT) process, and the electron moves away in an electron transfer(ET) process in multiple environments (baths). This XCET process plays an essential role in the harvesting of solar energy in biological and photovoltaic materials. We develop a practical theoretical model to study the efficiency of XCET process that occurs either in consecutive or concerted processes under the influence of non-Markovian bath…
