LiDAR point cloud streams are usually sparse in time dimension, which is limited by hardware performance. Generally, the frame rates of mechanical LiDAR sensors are 10 to 20 Hz, which is much lower than other commonly used sensors like cameras. To overcome the temporal limitations of LiDAR sensors, a novel task named Point Cloud Frame Interpolation is studied in this paper. Given two consecutive point cloud frames, Point Cloud Frame Interpolation aims to generate intermediate frame(s) between them. To achieve that, we propose a novel framework, namely Point Cloud Frame Interpolation Network (PointINet). Based on the proposed method, the low frame rate point cloud streams can be upsampled to higher frame rates. We start by estimating bi-directional 3D scene flow between the two point clouds and then warp them to the given time step based on the 3D scene flow. To fuse the two warped frames and generate intermediate point cloud(s), we propose a novel learning-based points fusion module, which simultaneously takes two warped point clouds into consideration. We design both quantitative and qualitative experiments to evaluate the performance of the point cloud frame interpolation method and extensive experiments on two large scale outdoor LiDAR datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed PointINet. Our code is available at https://github.com/ispc-lab/PointINet.git.
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in focus on the interpolation task of computer vision. Despite the tremendous advancement of video interpolation, point cloud interpolation remains insufficiently explored. Meanwhile, the existence of numerous nonlinear large motions in real-world scenarios makes the point cloud interpolation task more challenging. In light of these issues, we present NeuralPCI: an end-to-end 4D spatio-temporal Neural field for 3D Point Cloud Interpolation, which implicitly integrates multi-frame information to handle nonlinear large motions for both indoo…
Differentiable image sampling in the form of backward warping has seen broad adoption in tasks like depth estimation and optical flow prediction. In contrast, how to perform forward warping has seen less attention, partly due to additional challenges such as resolving the conflict of mapping multiple pixels to the same target location in a differentiable way. We propose softmax splatting to address this paradigm shift and show its effectiveness on the application of frame interpolation. Specifically, given two input frames, we forward-warp the frames and their feature pyramid representations b…

LiDAR point cloud frame interpolation, which synthesizes the intermediate frame between the captured frames, has emerged as an important issue for many applications. Especially for reducing the amounts of point cloud transmission, it is by predicting the intermediate frame based on the reference frames to upsample data to high frame rate ones. However, due to high-dimensional and sparse characteristics of point clouds, it is more difficult to predict the intermediate frame for LiDAR point clouds than videos. In this paper, we propose a novel LiDAR point cloud frame interpolation method, which …

Specifically, we develop a dual meta-learned frame interpolation framework to synthesize intermediate frames with the guidance of context information and optical flow as well as taking the time-step as side i…

We present, AdaFNIO - Adaptive Fourier Neural Interpolation Operator, a neural operator-based architecture to perform video frame interpolation. Current deep learning based methods rely on local convolutions for feature learning and suffer from not being scale-invariant, thus requiring training data to be augmented through random flipping and re-scaling. On the other hand, AdaFNIO, learns the features in the frames, independent of input resolution, through token mixing and global convolution in the Fourier space or the spectral domain by using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). We show that AdaFNIO…
Frame interpolation is an essential video processing technique that adjusts the temporal resolution of an image sequence. While deep learning has brought great improvements to the area of video frame interpolation, techniques that make use of neural networks can typically not easily be deployed in practical applications like a video editor since they are either computationally too demanding or fail at high resolutions. In contrast, we propose a deep learning approach that solely relies on splatting to synthesize interpolated frames. This splatting-based synthesis for video frame interpolation …

This work presents a supervised learning based approach to the computer vision problem of frame interpolation. The presented technique could also be used in the cartoon animations since drawing each individual frame consumes a noticeable amount of time. The most existing solutions to this problem use unsupervised methods and focus only on real life videos with already high frame rate. However, the experiments show that such methods do not work as well when the frame rate becomes low and object displacements between frames becomes large. This is due to the fact that interpolation of the large d…
Video frame interpolation typically involves two steps: motion estimation and pixel synthesis. Such a two-step approach heavily depends on the quality of motion estimation. This paper presents a robust video frame interpolation method that combines these two steps into a single process. Specifically, our method considers pixel synthesis for the interpolated frame as local convolution over two input frames. The convolution kernel captures both the local motion between the input frames and the coefficients for pixel synthesis. Our method employs a deep fully convolutional neural network to estim…
Video frame interpolation can up-convert the frame rate and enhance the video quality. In recent years, although the interpolation performance has achieved great success, image blur usually occurs at the object boundaries owing to the large motion. It has been a long-standing problem, and has not been addressed yet. In this paper, we propose to reduce the image blur and get the clear shape of objects by preserving the edges in the interpolated frames. To this end, the proposed Edge-Aware Network (EA-Net) integrates the edge information into the frame interpolation task. It follows an end-to-en…

Video frame interpolation aims to synthesize nonexistent frames in-between the original frames. While significant advances have been made from the recent deep convolutional neural networks, the quality of interpolation is often reduced due to large object motion or occlusion. In this work, we propose a video frame interpolation method which explicitly detects the occlusion by exploring the depth information. Specifically, we develop a depth-aware flow projection layer to synthesize intermediate flows that preferably sample closer objects than farther ones. In addition, we learn hierarchical fe…
Frame interpolation attempts to synthesise frames given one or more consecutive video frames. In recent years, deep learning approaches, and notably convolutional neural networks, have succeeded at tackling low- and high-level computer vision problems including frame interpolation. These techniques often tackle two problems, namely algorithm efficiency and reconstruction quality. In this paper, we present a multi-scale generative adversarial network for frame interpolation (\mbox{FIGAN}). To maximise the efficiency of our network, we propose a novel multi-scale residual estimation module where…
A majority of methods for video frame interpolation compute bidirectional optical flow between adjacent frames of a video, followed by a suitable warping algorithm to generate the output frames. However, approaches relying on optical flow often fail to model occlusions and complex non-linear motions directly from the video and introduce additional bottlenecks unsuitable for widespread deployment. We address these limitations with FLAVR, a flexible and efficient architecture that uses 3D space-time convolutions to enable end-to-end learning and inference for video frame interpolation. Video frame interpolation aims at synthesizing intermediate frames from nearby source frames while maintaining spatial and temporal consistencies. The existing deep-learning-based video frame interpolation methods can be roughly divided into two categories: flow-based methods and kernel-based methods. The performance of flow-based methods is often jeopardized by the inaccuracy of flow map estimation due to oversimplified motion models, while that of kernel-based methods tends to be constrained by the rigidity of kernel shape. To address these performance-limiting issues, a novel mechanism name…
Video frame interpolation, which aims to synthesize non-exist intermediate frames in a video sequence, is an important research topic in computer vision. Existing video frame interpolation methods have achieved remarkable results under specific assumptions, such as instant or known exposure time. However, in complicated real-world situations, the temporal priors of videos, i.e. frames per second (FPS) and frame exposure time, may vary from different camera sensors. When test videos are taken under different exposure settings from training ones, the interpolated frames will suffer significant m…

Video frame interpolation, the synthesis of novel views in time, is an increasingly popular research direction with many new papers further advancing the state of the art. But as each new method comes with a host of variables that affect the interpolation quality, it can be hard to tell what is actually important for this task. In this work, we show, somewhat surprisingly, that it is possible to achieve near state-of-the-art results with an older, simpler approach, namely adaptive separable convolutions, by a subtle set of low level improvements. In doing so, we propose a number of intuitive b…

Most of them are either based on optical flow information, or interpolation kernel, or a combination of these two methods. However, these methods have ignored that there are grid restrictions on the position of kernel region during synthesizing each target pixel. These limitations result in that they cannot well adapt to the irregularity of object shape and uncertainty of motion, which may lead to irrelev…

Hence, VFI works perform well for small frame gaps and perform poorly as the frame gap increases. In this work, we propose a novel framework to address this problem.
