Recent advances in high refresh rate displays as well as the increased interest in high rate of slow motion and frame up-conversion fuel the demand for efficient and cost-effective multi-frame video interpolation solutions. To that regard, inserting multiple frames between consecutive video frames are of paramount importance for the consumer electronics industry. State-of-the-art methods are iterative solutions interpolating one frame at the time. They introduce temporal inconsistencies and clearly noticeable visual artifacts.
Departing from the state-of-the-art, this work introduces a true multi-frame interpolator. It utilizes a pyramidal style network in the temporal domain to complete the multi-frame interpolation task in one-shot. A novel flow estimation procedure using a relaxed loss function, and an advanced, cubic-based, motion model is also used to further boost interpolation accuracy when complex motion segments are encountered. Results on the Adobe240 dataset show that the proposed method generates visually pleasing, temporally consistent frames, outperforms the current best off-the-shelf method by 1.57db in PSNR with 8 times smaller model and 7.7 times faster. The proposed method can be easily extended to interpolate a large number of new frames while remaining efficient because of the one-shot mechanism.
We propose the first deep learning solution to video frame inpainting, a challenging instance of the general video inpainting problem with applications in video editing, manipulation, and forensics. Our task is less ambiguous than frame interpolation and video prediction because we have access to both the temporal context and a partial glimpse of the future, allowing us to better evaluate the quality of a model's predictions objectively. We devise a pipeline composed of two modules: a bidirectional video prediction module, and a temporally-aware frame interpolation module. The prediction modul…

Large pre-trained, zero-shot capable models have shown considerable success both for standard transfer and adaptation tasks, with particular robustness towards distribution shifts. In addition, subsequent fine-tuning can considerably improve performance on a selected downstream task. However, through naive fine-tuning, these zero-shot models lose their generalizability and robustness towards distribution shifts. This is a particular problem for tasks such as Continual Learning (CL), where continuous adaptation has to be performed as new task distributions are introduced sequentially. In this w…
Existing works reduce motion blur and up-convert frame rate through two separate ways, including frame deblurring and frame interpolation. However, few studies have approached the joint video enhancement problem, namely synthesizing high-frame-rate clear results from low-frame-rate blurry inputs. In this paper, we propose a blurry video frame interpolation method to reduce motion blur and up-convert frame rate simultaneously. Specifically, we develop a pyramid module to cyclically synthesize clear intermediate frames. The pyramid module features adjustable spatial receptive field and temporal …
Standard video frame interpolation methods first estimate optical flow between input frames and then synthesize an intermediate frame guided by motion. Recent approaches merge these two steps into a single convolution process by convolving input frames with spatially adaptive kernels that account for motion and re-sampling simultaneously. These methods require large kernels to handle large motion, which limits the number of pixels whose kernels can be estimated at once due to the large memory demand. To address this problem, this paper formulates frame interpolation as local separable convolut…

Recent research has witnessed advances in facial image editing tasks including face swapping and face reenactment. However, these methods are confined to dealing with one specific task at a time. In addition, for video facial editing, previous methods either simply apply transformations frame by frame or utilize multiple frames in a concatenated or iterative fashion, which leads to noticeable visual flickers. In this paper, we propose a unified temporally consistent facial video editing framework termed UniFaceGAN. Based on a 3D reconstruction model and a simple yet efficient dynamic training …
Abrupt motion of camera or objects in a scene result in a blurry video, and therefore recovering high quality video requires two types of enhancements: visual enhancement and temporal upsampling. A broad range of research attempted to recover clean frames from blurred image sequences or temporally upsample frames by interpolation, yet there are very limited studies handling both problems jointly. In this work, we present a novel framework for deblurring, interpolating and extrapolating sharp frames from a motion-blurred video in an end-to-end manner. We design our framework by first learning t…

This paper studies the challenging problem of recovering motion from blur, also known as joint deblurring and interpolation or blur temporal super-resolution. The challenges are twofold: 1) the current methods still leave considerable room for improvement in terms of visual quality even on the synthetic dataset, and 2) poor generalization to real-world data. To this end, we propose a blur interpolation transformer (BiT) to effectively unravel the underlying temporal correlation encoded in blur. Based on multi-scale residual Swin transformer blocks, we introduce dual-end temporal supervision an…

In this paper, we present a deep generative model based method to generate diverse human motion interpolation results. We resort to the Conditional Variational Auto-Encoder (CVAE) to learn human motion conditioned on a pair of given start and end motions, by leveraging the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) structure for both the encoder and the decoder. Additionally, we introduce a regularization loss to further promote sample diversity. Once trained, our method is able to generate multiple plausible coherent motions by repetitively sampling from the learned latent space. Experiments on the publi…

Pseudo-LiDAR point cloud interpolation is a novel and challenging task in the field of autonomous driving, which aims to address the frequency mismatching problem between camera and LiDAR. Previous works represent the 3D spatial motion relationship induced by a coarse 2D optical flow, and the quality of interpolated point clouds only depends on the supervision of depth maps. As a result, the generated point clouds suffer from inferior global distributions and local appearances. To solve the above problems, we propose a Pseudo-LiDAR point cloud interpolation network to generates temporally and …

The problem of video frame interpolation is to increase the temporal resolution of a low frame-rate video, by interpolating novel frames between existing temporally sparse frames. This paper presents a self-supervised approach to video frame interpolation that requires only a single video. We pose the video as a set of layers. Each layer is parameterized by two implicit neural networks -- one for learning a static frame and the other for a time-varying motion field corresponding to video dynamics. Together they represent an occlusion-free subset of the scene with a pseudo-depth channel. To mod…

Recently, video frame interpolation using a combination of frame- and event-based cameras has surpassed traditional image-based methods both in terms of performance and memory efficiency. However, current methods still suffer from (i) brittle image-level fusion of complementary interpolation results, that fails in the presence of artifacts in the fused image, (ii) potentially temporally inconsistent and inefficient motion estimation procedures, that run for every inserted frame and (iii) low contrast regions that do not trigger events, and thus cause events-only motion estimation to generate a…
Given two consecutive frames, video interpolation aims at generating intermediate frame(s) to form both spatially and temporally coherent video sequences. While most existing methods focus on single-frame interpolation, we propose an end-to-end convolutional neural network for variable-length multi-frame video interpolation, where the motion interpretation and occlusion reasoning are jointly modeled. We start by computing bi-directional optical flow between the input images using a U-Net architecture. These flows are then linearly combined at each time step to approximate the intermediate bi-d…

We present a frame interpolation algorithm that synthesizes multiple intermediate frames from two input images with large in-between motion. Recent methods use multiple networks to estimate optical flow or depth and a separate network dedicated to frame synthesis. This is often complex and requires scarce optical flow or depth ground-truth. In this work, we present a single unified network, distinguished by a multi-scale feature extractor that shares weights at all scales, and is trainable from frames alone. To synthesize crisp and pleasing frames, we propose to optimize our network with the G…
In this paper, we propose YOSO, a real-time panoptic segmentation framework. YOSO predicts masks via dynamic convolutions between panoptic kernels and image feature maps, in which you only need to segment once for both instance and semantic segmentation tasks. To reduce the computational overhead, we design a feature pyramid aggregator for the feature map extraction, and a separable dynamic decoder for the panoptic kernel generation. The aggregator re-parameterizes interpolation-first modules in a convolution-first way, which significantly speeds up the pipeline without any additional costs. T…

Videos in the real-world contain various dynamics and motions that may look unnaturally discontinuous in time when the recordedframe rate is low. This paper reports the second AIM challenge on Video Temporal Super-Resolution (VTSR), a.k.a. frame interpolation, with a focus on the proposed solutions, results, and analysis. From low-frame-rate (15 fps) videos, the challenge participants are required to submit higher-frame-rate (30 and 60 fps) sequences by estimating temporally intermediate frames. To simulate realistic and challenging dynamics in the real-world, we employ the REDS_VTSR dataset d…
Video stabilization is a fundamental and important technique for higher quality videos. Prior works have extensively explored video stabilization, but most of them involve cropping of the frame boundaries and introduce moderate levels of distortion. We present a novel deep approach to video stabilization which can generate video frames without cropping and low distortion. The proposed framework utilizes frame interpolation techniques to generate in between frames, leading to reduced inter-frame jitter. Once applied in an iterative fashion, the stabilization effect becomes stronger. A major adv…

We propose to learn a probabilistic motion model from a sequence of images. Besides spatio-temporal registration, our method offers to predict motion from a limited number of frames, useful for temporal super-resolution. The model is based on a probabilistic latent space and a novel temporal dropout training scheme. This enables simulation and interpolation of realistic motion patterns given only one or any subset of frames of a sequence. The encoded motion also allows to be transported from one subject to another without the need of inter-subject registration. An unsupervised generative defor…

Motion-based video frame interpolation commonly relies on optical flow to warp pixels from the inputs to the desired interpolation instant. Yet due to the inherent challenges of motion estimation (e.g. occlusions and discontinuities), most state-of-the-art interpolation approaches require subsequent refinement of the warped result to generate satisfying outputs, which drastically decreases the efficiency for multi-frame interpolation. In this work, we propose a fully differentiable Many-to-Many (M2M) splatting framework to interpolate frames efficiently. Specifically, given a frame pair, we es…
In this paper, we propose an algorithm to interpolate between a pair of images of a dynamic scene. While in the past years significant progress in frame interpolation has been made, current approaches are not able to handle images with brightness and illumination changes, which are common even when the images are captured shortly apart. We propose to address this problem by taking advantage of the existing optical flow methods that are highly robust to the variations in the illumination. Specifically, using the bidirectional flows estimated using an existing pre-trained flow network, we predic…

With the advance in user-friendly and powerful video editing tools, anyone can easily manipulate videos without leaving prominent visual traces. Frame-rate up-conversion (FRUC), a representative temporal-domain operation, increases the motion continuity of videos with a lower frame-rate and is used by malicious counterfeiters in video tampering such as generating fake frame-rate video without improving the quality or mixing temporally spliced videos. FRUC is based on frame interpolation schemes and subtle artifacts that remain in interpolated frames are often difficult to distinguish. Hence, d…

In this paper, we explore the space-time video super-resolution task, which aims to generate a high-resolution (HR) slow-motion video from a low frame rate (LFR), low-resolution (LR) video. A simple solution is to split it into two sub-tasks: video frame interpolation (VFI) and video super-resolution (VSR). However, temporal interpolation and spatial super-resolution are intra-related in this task. Two-stage methods cannot fully take advantage of the natural property. In addition, state-of-the-art VFI or VSR networks require a large frame-synthesis or reconstruction module for predicting high-…

In this paper, we address the space-time video super-resolution, which aims at generating a high-resolution (HR) slow-motion video from a low-resolution (LR) and low frame rate (LFR) video sequence. A naïve method is to decompose it into two sub-tasks: video frame interpolation (VFI) and video super-resolution (VSR). Nevertheless, temporal interpolation and spatial upscaling are intra-related in this problem. Two-stage approaches cannot fully make use of this natural property. Besides, state-of-the-art VFI or VSR deep networks usually have a large frame reconstruction module in order to obtain…
