Transseries expansions build upon ordinary power series methods by including additional basis elements such as exponentials and logarithms. Alternative summation methods can then be used to "resum" series to obtain more efficient approximations, and have been successfully widely applied in the study of continuous linear and nonlinear, single and multidimensional problems. In particular, a method known as transasymptotic resummation can be used to describe continuous behaviour occurring on multiple scales without the need for asymptotic matching. Here we apply transasymptotic resummation to discrete systems and show that it may be used to naturally and efficiently describe discrete delayed bifurcations, or "canards", in singularly-perturbed variants of the logistic map which contain delayed period-doubling bifurcations. We use transasymptotic resummation to approximate the solutions, and describe the behaviour of the solution across the bifurcations. This approach has two significant advantages: it may be applied in systematic fashion even across multiple bifurcations, and the exponential multipliers encode information about the bifurcations that are used to explain effects seen in the solution behaviour.
In this paper, we investigate a delayed reaction-diffusion-advection equation, which models the population dynamics in the advective heterogeneous environment. The existence of the nonconstant positive steady state and associated Hopf bifurcation are obtained. A weighted inner product associated with the advection rate is introduced to compute the normal forms, which is the main difference between Hopf bifurcation for delayed reaction-diffusion-advection model and that for delayed reaction-diffusion model. Moreover, we find that the spatial scale and advection can affect Hopf bifurcation in th…
In this paper, we show the existence of Hopf bifurcation of a delayed single population model with patch structure. The effect of the dispersal rate on the Hopf bifurcation is considered. Especially, if each patch is favorable for the species, we show that when the dispersal rate tends to zero, the limit of the Hopf bifurcation value is the minimum of the "local" Hopf bifurcation values over all patches. On the other hand, when the dispersal rate tends to infinity, the Hopf bifurcation value tends to that of the "average" model.
In the context of a spatially extended model for the electrical activity in a pituitary lactotroph cell line, we establish that two delayed bifurcation phenomena from ODEs ---folded node canards and slow passage through Hopf bifurcations--- persist in the presence of diffusion. For canards, the single cell (ODE) model exhibits canard-induced bursting. Numerical simulations of the PDE reveal rich spatio-temporal canard dynamics, and the transitions between different bursts are mediated by spatio-temporal maximal canards. The ODE model also exhibits delayed loss of stability due to slow passage …
In this paper, we present an algorithm for deriving the normal forms of Bautin bifurcations in reaction-diffusion systems with time delays and Neumann boundary conditions. On the center manifold near a Bautin bifurcation, the first and second Lyapunov coefficients are calculated explicitly, which completely determine the dynamical behavior near the bifurcation point. As an example, the Segel-Jackson predator-prey model is studied. Near the Bautin bifurcation we find the existence of fold bifurcation of periodic orbits, as well as subcritical and supercritical Hopf bifurcations. Both theoretica…
In this paper, we investigate a reaction-diffusion-advection model with time delay effect. The stability/instability of the spatially nonhomogeneous positive steady state and the associated Hopf bifurcation are investigated when the given parameter of the model is near the principle eigenvalue of an elliptic operator. Our result implies that time delay can make the spatially nonhomogeneous positive steady state unstable for a reaction-diffusion-advection model, and the model can exhibit oscillatory pattern through Hopf bifurcation.
We investigate a diffusive predator-prey model by incorporating the fear effect into prey population, since the fear of predators could visibly reduce the reproduction of prey. By introducing the mature delay as bifurcation parameter, we find this makes the predator-prey system more complicated and usually induces Hopf and Hopf-Hopf bifurcations. The formulas determining the properties of Hopf and Hopf-Hopf bifurcations by computing the normal form on the center manifold are given. Near the Hopf-Hopf bifurcation point we give the detailed bifurcation set by investigating the universal unfoldin…
Omnivory is defined as feeding on more than one trophic level. An example of this is the so-called intraguild predation (IG) which includes a predator and its prey that share a common resource. IG predation models are known to exhibit interesting dynamics including chaos. This work considers a three-species food web model with omnivory, where the interactions between the basal resource, the IG prey, and the IG predator are of Lotka-Volterra type. In the absence of predation, the basal resource follows a delayed logistic equation or popularly known as Hutchinson's equation. Conditions for the e…
Dynamics in delayed differential equations (DDEs) is a well studied problem mainly because DDEs arise in models in many areas of science including biology, physiology, population dynamics and engineering. The change of the nature in the solutions in the parameter space for a network of Phase-Locked Loop oscillators was studied in Symmetric bifurcation analysis of synchronous states of time-delayed coupled Phase-Locked Loop oscillators. Communications in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation, Elsevier BV, 2014, (on-line version), where the existence of Hopf bifurcations for both cases, sym…
We study the Turing-Hopf bifurcation and give a simple and explicit calculation formula of the normal forms for a general two-components system of reaction-diffusion equation with time delays. We declare that our formula can be automated by Matlab. At first, we extend the normal forms method given by Faria in 2000 to Hopf-zero singularity. Then, an explicit formula of the normal forms for Turing-Hopf bifurcation are given. Finally, we obtain the possible attractors of the original system near the Turing-Hopf singularity by the further analysis of the normal forms, which mainly include, the spa…
In this paper we study the stabilization of rotating waves using time delayed feedback control. It is our aim to put some recent results in a broader context by discussing two different methods to determine the stability of the target periodic orbit in the controlled system: 1) by directly studying the Floquet multipliers and 2) by use of the Hopf bifurcation theorem. We also propose an extension of the Pyragas control scheme for which the controlled system becomes a functional differential equation of neutral type. Using the observation that we are able to determine the direction of bifurcati…
Double Hopf bifurcation analysis can be used to reveal some complicated dynamical behavior in a dynamical system, such as the existence or coexistence of periodic orbits, quasi-periodic orbits, or even chaos. In this paper, an algorithm for deriving the normal form near a codimension-two double Hopf bifurcation of a reaction-diffusion system with time delay and Neumann boundary condition is rigorously established, by employing the center manifold reduction technique and the normal form method. We find that the dynamical behavior near bifurcation points are proved to be governed by twelve disti…

This article describes a reduction of a nonautonomous Brusselator reaction-diffusion system of partial differential equations on a spherical cap with time dependent curvature using the method of centre manifold reduction. Parameter values are chosen such that the change in curvature would cross critical values which would change the stability of the patternless solution in the constant domain case. The evolving domain functions and quasi-patternless solutions are derived as well as a method to obtain this nonautonomous normal form. The coefficients of such a normal form are computed and the re…
We present a rigorous framework for the local analysis of canards and slow passages through bifurcations in a wide class of infinite-dimensional dynamical systems with time-scale separation. The framework is applicable to models where an infinite-dimensional dynamical system for the fast variables is coupled to a finite-dimensional dynamical system for slow variables. We prove the existence of centre-manifolds for generic models of this type, and study the reduced, finite-dimensional dynamics near bifurcations of (possibly) patterned steady states in the layer problem. Theoretical results are …
In this paper, an attempt has been made to understand the parametric excitation of a periodic orbit of nonlinear oscillator which can be a limit cycle, center or a slowly decaying center-type oscillation. For this a delay model is considered with nonlinear feedback oscillator defined in terms of Liénard oscillator description which can give rise to any one of the periodic orbits stated above. We have characterized the resonance and antiresonance behaviour for arbitrary nonlinear system from their stability and bifurcation analyses in reference to the standard delayed van der Pol system. An app…
We study a scalar, first-order delay differential equation (DDE) with instantaneous and state-dependent delayed feedback, which itself may be delayed. The state dependence introduces nonlinearity into an otherwise linear system. We investigate the ensuing nonlinear dynamics with the case of instantaneous state dependence as our starting point. We present the bifurcation diagram in the parameter plane of the two feedback strengths showing how periodic orbits bifurcate from a curve of Hopf bifurcations and disappear along a curve where both period and amplitude grow beyond bound as the orbits be…
In this article, the phenomenon of delayed Hopf bifurcations (DHB) in reaction-diffusion PDEs is analyzed in the cubic Complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with a slowly-varying parameter. We use the classical asymptotic methods of stationary phase and steepest descents to show that solutions which approach the attracting quasi-steady state (QSS) before the Hopf bifurcation remain near that state for long times after the Hopf bifurcation and the QSS has become repelling. In the complex time plane, the phase function of the linear PDE has a saddle point, and the Stokes and anti-Stokes lines are cen…
We consider the Yamada model for an excitable or self-pulsating laser with saturable absorber, and study the effects of delayed optical self-feedback in the excitable case. More specifically, we are concerned with the generation of stable periodic pulse trains via repeated self-excitation after passage through the delayed feedback loop, as well as their bifurcations. We show that onset and termination of such pulse trains correspond to the simultaneous bifurcation of countably many fold periodic orbits with infinite period in this delay differential equation. We employ numerical continuation a…
Oscillatory systems with time-delayed pulsatile feedback appear in various applied and theoretical research areas, and received a growing interest in the last years. For such systems, we report a remarkable scenario of destabilization of a periodic regular spiking regime. In the bifurcation point numerous regimes with non-equal interspike intervals emerge simultaneously. We show that this bifurcation is triggered by the steepness of the oscillator's phase resetting curve and that the number of the emerging, so-called "jittering" regimes grows exponentially with the delay value. Although this a…
We discuss a bifurcation scenario which creates periodic pulsating solutions in slow-fast delayed systems through a cascade of almost simultaneous Hopf bifurcations. This scenario has been previously associated with formation of pulses in a delayed model of mode-locked semiconductor lasers. In this work, through a case study of several examples, we establish that a cascade of Hopf bifurcations can produce periodic pulses, with a period close to the delay time, in population dynamics models and explore the conditions that ensure the realization of this scenario near a transcritical bifurcation …
Excitability, encountered in numerous fields from biology to neurosciences and optics, is a general phenomenon characterized by an all-or-none response of a system to an external perturbation. When subject to delayed feedback, excitable systems can sustain multistable pulsing regimes, which are either regular or irregular time sequences of pulses reappearing every delay time. Here, we investigate an excitable microlaser subject to delayed optical feedback and study the emergence of complex pulsing dynamics, including periodic, quasiperiodic and irregular pulsing regimes. This work is motivated…
Various field and laboratory experiments show that prey refuge plays a significant role in the stability of prey-predator dynamics. On the other hand, theoretical studies show that delayed system exhibits a much more realistic dynamics than its non-delayed counterpart. In this paper, we study a multi-delayed prey-predator model with prey refuge. We consider modified Holling Type II response function that incorporates the effect of prey refuge and then introduce two discrete delays in the model system. A negative feedback delay is considered in the logistic prey growth rate to represent density…
The present paper addresses the swing equation with additional delayed damping as an example for pendulum-like systems. In this context, it is proved that recurring sub- and supercritical Hopf bifurcations occur if time delay is increased. To this end, a general formula for the first Lyapunov coefficient in second order systems with additional delayed damping and delay-free nonlinearity is given. In so far the paper extends results about stability switching of equilibria in linear time delay systems from Cooke and Grossman. In addition to the analytical results, periodic solutions are numerica…
In this paper, a fractional Lotka-Volterra mathematical model for a bioreactor is proposed and used to fit the data provided by a bioprocess known as continuous fermentation of Zymomonas mobilis. The model contemplates a time-delay $τ$ due to the dead-time in obtaining the measurement of biomass $x(t)$. A Hopf bifurcation analysis is performed to characterize the inherent self oscillatory experimental bioprocess response. As consequence, stability conditions for the equilibrium point together with conditions for limit cycles using the delay $τ$ as bifurcation parameter are obtained. Under the …
