The established by us possibility to consider circumgalactic clouds (CGCs) as the remnants of the parent clouds in which globular clusters (GCs) have been formed (Acharova & Sharina 2018) is based on a comparison of the following facts. First, the metallicities of CGCs at redshifts $ z <1 $ and of GCs in our and other galaxies show a bimodal distribution with a minimum near $\rm [Mg/H]=-1$. Mean values and standard deviations of the Mg abundances in GCs and CGCs with $\rm [Mg/H]<-1$ and $\rm [Mg/H]> -1$ coincide within the typical error of measuring the elemental abundances in clouds: 0.3 dex (Acharova & Sharina 2018). Second, a similar coincidence is observed for GCs and CGCs with $\rm [X/H]<-1$ and $\rm [X/H]> -1$ at redshifts $ 2 <z <3 $, where $[X/H]$ is the metallicity determined from the sum of several elemental abundances (Dias et al. 2016, Rafelski et al. 2012, Wotta et al. 2019, Quiret et al. 2016). Third, high-metallicity CGCs are observed starting from redshifts $\rm z\le 2.5$, i.e. approximately 11 Gyrs ago. At the same time globular clusters were actively formed, and their supernovae were able to enrich the surrounding gas, from which the high-metal component of the clouds was formed.
The abundance of alpha elements and iron in stars of globular clusters shows the composition of the gaseous medium, in which they have been formed. In the present paper, we discuss a possibility to consider dense clouds of circumgalactic gas (partial Lyman limit systems and Lyman limit systems) observed in the 100 - 130 kpc neighbourhood of galaxies at redshifts of 0.1<z<1.1 as being the residual parts of clouds, in which globular clusters have been formed. Conclusions have been drawn based on statistical analysis of the abundance of magnesium and iron in globular clusters and in circumgalacti…
A method is proposed for determining the properties of type Ia supernovae from short-lived precursors -- Prompt SNIa. This method is based on the assumption that this subtype of type Ia supernovae exploded into low-metallicity globular clusters (GCs), and is responsible for the enrichment of the high-metallicity subgroup of GCs and circumgalactic clouds (CGCs) with the iron peak elements. We justify that CGCs are the formation places of GCs of both subgroups. The accuracy of the method depends, first, on the number of GCs, the spectra of which have been studied in detail; second, on the number…
Based on a large sample of 133 Galactic globular clusters we obtained a new estimate of the frequency of globular-cluster impacts onto the Galactic plane, which we found to be equal to three events per 1 Myr. Our computations involving new kinematical data do not support the well-known hypothesis about the possible origin of the open cluster Stephenson~2 as a result of the massive globular cluster $ω$ Cen crossing the Galactic disk. Our results also do not support the well-known hypothesis that the globular cluster NGC6397 could trigger the formation of the open cluster NGC6231. We found for t…
Passing through the Galactic disk, a massive object such as a globular cluster, can trigger star formation process leading to the birth of open clusters. Here, we analyze such possible evolutionary relationship between globular and open clusters. To search for the closest rapprochement between objects we computed backwards the orbits of 150 Galactic globular and 232 open clusters (younger than 100 Myr) with proper motions, derived from the Gaia DR2 Catalog. The orbits were computed using the recently modified three-component (disk, bulge and halo) axisymmetric Navarro-Frenk-White potential, wh…
We present a new photometric study of NGC 3258 and NGC 3268 globular cluster systems (GCSs), using images in filters $B,C,V,R,I$ and $z'$, obtained from four different telescopes. The wide spatial coverage allow us to estimate the whole extension of both GCSs more precisely than in previous works, and new values for the richness of GCs subpopulations. We find differences in the azimuthal distribution between blue (metal-poor) and red (metal-rich) globular clusters (GCs), and confirm that radial profiles flatten towards the centre of the galaxies. In both cases we detected a radial gradient in …
We investigate the new and still poorly studied matter of so-called multiple stellar populations (MSPs) in Galactic globular clusters (GGCs). Studying MSPs and their accumulated data can shed more light on the formation and evolution of GGCs and other closely related fundamental problems. We focus on the strong relation between the radial distribution of evolutionary homogeneous stars and their U-based photometric characteristics in the nearby GGC NGC 6752 and compare this with a similar relation we found in NGC 3201 and NGC 1261. We use our new multi-color photometry in a fairly wide field of…
We propose an evolutionary model to describe the dynamical evolution of star cluster systems in tidal fields, in which we calibrated the parametric equations defining the model by running direct N-body simulations of star clusters with a wide range of initial masses and set of orbital parameters, living within the external tidal field generated by a disc-like galaxy. We derived a new method to solve numerically the evolutionary equations, allowing us to infer constraints on the mass of a star cluster from its age, present-day mass, orbital parameters and external gravitational potential. The r…
Optimised population synthesis provides an empirical method to extract the relative mix of stellar evolutionary stages and the distribution of atmospheric parameters within unresolved stellar systems, yet a robust validation of this method is still lacking. We here provide a calibration of population synthesis via non-linear bound-constrained optimisation of stellar populations based upon optical spectra of mock stellar systems and observed Galactic Globular Clusters (GGCs). The MILES stellar library is used as a basis for mock spectra as well as templates for the synthesis of deep GGC spectra…
We present the far-UV (FUV) photometry of images acquired with UVIT on AstroSat to probe the horizontal branch (HB) population of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 2298. UV-optical color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) are constructed for member stars in combination with HST UV Globular Cluster Survey (HUGS) data for the central region and Gaia and ground-based photometric data for the outer region. Blue HB (BHB) sequence with a spread and four hot HB stars are detected in all FUV-optical CMDs and are compared with theoretical updated BaSTI isochrones and synthetic HB models with a range in helium a…
Most Globular Clusters are believed to host a single stellar populations. They can thus be considered a good place to study the Spite plateau and probe for possible evolutionary modifications of the Li content. We want to determine the Li content of subgiant (SG) and Main Sequence (MS) stars of the old, metal-poor globular cluster NGC 6397. This work was aimed not only at studying possible Li abundance variations but to investigate the cosmological Li discrepancy. Here, we present FLAMES/GIRAFFE observations of a sample of 84 SG and 79 MS stars in NGC 6397 selected in a narrow range of B-V col…
We present the results of determination of the age, helium mass fraction (Y), metallicity ([Fe/H]), and abundances of the elements C, N, O, Na, Mg, Ca, Ti, C and Mn for the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6652. We use its medium-resolution integrated-light spectrum from the library of Schiavon and our population synthesis method to fulfill this task. We select the evolutionary isochrone and stellar mass function for our analysis, which provide the best approximation to the shapes and intensities of the observed Balmer line profiles. The determined elemental abundances, age and metallicity are ch…
We present results on the stellar density radial profile of the outer regions of NGC6779, a Milky Way globular cluster recently proposed as a candidate member of the Gaia Sausage structure, a merger remnant of a massive dwarf galaxy with the Milky Way. Taking advantage of the Pan-STARRS PS1 public astrometric and photometric catalogue, we built the radial profile for the outermost cluster regions using horizontal branch and main sequence stars, separately, in order to probe for different profile trends because of difference stellar masses. Owing to its relatively close location to the Galactic…
It is now commonly accepted that globular clusters (GCs) have undergone a complex formation and that they host at least two stellar generations. This is a recent paradigm and is founded on both photometric and spectroscopic evidence. We concentrate on results based on high-resolution spectroscopy and on how we moved from single to multiple stellar populations concept for GCs. We underline that the peculiar chemical composition of GC stars is fundamental in establishing the multiple populations scenario and briefly outline what can be learned from observations. Finally, recent observational res…
The photometric properties that we could observe for Extra-Galactic Globular Clusters (EGGCs) are the integrated light of the system and for nearby EGGCs it also is possible to measure both half-light radii and the color spatial distribution, e.g. for areas smaller and larger than the half-light radius. No information about the internal dynamical state of the system could be directly obtained from observations. On the other hand, simulations of Globular Clusters (GCs) can provide detailed information about the dynamical evolution of the system. We present a preliminary study of EGGCs' photomet…
Lowered isothermal models, such as the multimass Michie-King models, have been successful in describing observational data of globular clusters. In this study we assess whether such models are able to describe the phase space properties of evolutionary $N$-body models. We compare the multimass models as implemented in (Gieles \& Zocchi) to $N$-body models of star clusters with different retention fractions for the black holes and neutron stars evolving in a tidal field. We find that multimass models successfully reproduce the density and velocity dispersion profiles of the different mass compo…
Using a Monte Carlo code, we construct a dynamic evolutionary model of the Galactic globular cluster M22 (NGC6656). The initial conditions are chosen so that, after about 12Gyr of stellar and dynamical evolution, the model is an approximate fit to the surface brightness and velocity dispersion profiles of the cluster, to its mass function, and to the current binary fraction. Depending on the distribution of black hole natal kicks, we predict that the present-day population of stellar-mass black holes ranges from about 40 (no kicks) down to essentially zero (kicks distributed like those of neut…

The study of ages, helium mass fraction (Y) and chemical composition of globular clusters in dwarf galaxies is important for understanding the physical conditions at the main evolutionary stages of the host galaxies and for constraining the build-up histories of large galaxies. We present the analysis of integrated-light spectra of 8 extragalactic and 20 Galactic globular clusters (GCs) using our population synthesis method. We calculate synthetic spectra of GCs according to the defined stellar mass functions using model atmospheres and stellar parameters ($[Fe/H]$, $T_{eff}$, and $log g$) set…
The formation and growth of globular cluster systems (GCSs) is closely related to the evolutionary processes experienced by their host galaxies. In particular, their radial distributions scale with several properties of the galaxies and their halos. We performed a photometric study, by means of HST/ACS archival data of several intermediate luminosity galaxies located in low density environments. It was supplemented with available photometric data of GCSs from the Virgo and Fornax clusters, resulting in a sample of almost 30 GCSs for which we fitted their radial profiles. The resulting overall …
We have performed a census of the UV-bright population in 78 globular clusters using wide-field UV telescopes. This population includes a variety of phases of post-horizontal branch (HB) evolution, including hot post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, and post-early AGB stars. There are indications that old stellar systems like globular clusters produce fewer post-(early) AGB stars than currently predicted by evolutionary models, but observations are still scarce. We obtained FORS2 spectroscopy of eleven of these UV-selected objects (covering a range of -2.3<[Fe/H]<-1.0), which we (re-)analy…
We present a simple theory for the evolution of initially compact clusters in a tidal field. The fundamental ingredient of the model is that a cluster conducts a constant fraction of its own energy through the half-mass radius by two-body interactions every half-mass relaxation time. This energy is produced in a self-regulative way in the core by an (unspecified) energy source. We find that the half-mass radius increases during the first part (roughly half) of the evolution and decreases in the second half, while the escape rate is constant and set by the tidal field. We present evolutionary t…
In this study, we identified and characterized the hot and luminous UV-bright stars in the globular cluster NGC 2808. We combined data from the Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on-board the Indian space satellite, AstroSat, with the Hubble Space Telescope UV Globular Cluster Survey (HUGS) data for the central region (within $\sim$ $\ang[angle-symbol-over-decimal]{;2.7;} \times \ang[angle-symbol-over-decimal]{;2.7;}$) and Gaia and ground-based optical photometry for the outer parts of the cluster. We constructed the UV and UV-optical color-magnitude diagrams, compared the horizontal branch…
We have studied ultraviolet (UV) bright sources in the Galactic globular cluster (GGC) NGC 4590 using Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on-board the \mbox{\em AstroSat} satellite. Using UV-optical color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), we have identified and characterized the sources of different evolutionary stages i.e., blue horizontal branch stars (BHBs), extremely blue horizontal branch stars (EHBs), blue straggler stars (BSs), variable stars, etc. We estimated effective temperature (T$_{\mathrm{eff}}$), gravity ($\log$(g)), luminosity (L$_{bol}$), and hence the radius (R) of these hot stars …
There is compelling observational evidence that globular clusters (GCs) are quite complex objects. A growing body of photometric results indicate that the evolutionary sequences are not simply isochrones in the observational plane -as believed until a few years ago- from the main sequence, to the subgiant, giant, and horizontal branches. The strongest indication of complexity comes however from the chemistry, from internal dispersion in iron abundance in a few cases, and in light elements (C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, etc.) in all GCs. This universality means that the complexity is intrinsic to the GC…
The Milky Way System and the Andromeda galaxy experienced radically different evolutionary histories. Nevertheless, it is found that these two galaxies ended up with globular cluster systems in which individual clusters have indistinguishable distributions of half-light radii. Furthermore globulars in both M31 and the Galaxy are found to have radii that are independent of their luminosities. In this respect globular clusters differ drastically from early-type galaxies in which half-light radius and luminosity are tightly correlated. Metal-rich globular clusters in M31 occupy a slightly larger …
We propose a new formation channel for intermediate mass black hole (IMBH) binaries via globular cluster collisions in the Galactic disc. Using numerical simulations, we show that the IMBHs form a tight binary that enters the gravitational waves (GWs) emission dominated regime driven by stellar interactions, and ultimately merge in $\lesssim 0.5$ Gyr. These events are clearly audible to LISA and can be associated with electromagnetic emission during the last evolutionary stages. During their orbital evolution, the IMBHs produce runaway stars comparable with GAIA and LAMOST observations.
We present results from 2MASS JKs photometry on the physical reality of recently reported globular cluster (GC) candidates in the Milky Way (MW) bulge. We relied our analysis on photometric membership probabilities that allowed us to distinguish real stellar aggregates from the composite field star population. When building colour-magnitude diagrams and stellar density maps for stars at different membership probability levels, the genuine GC candidate populations are clearly highlighted. We then used the tip of the red giant branch (RGB) as distance estimator, resulting heliocentric distances …
Star-to-star variations in abundances of the light elements carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sodium have been observed in stars of all evolutionary phases in all Galactic globular clusters that have been thoroughly studied. The data available for studying this phenomenon, and the hypotheses as to its origin, have both co-evolved with observing technology; once high-resolution spectra were available even for main-sequence stars in globular clusters, scenarios involving multiple closely spaced stellar generations enriched by feedback from moderate- and high-mass stars began to gain traction in the …
We present the first results of eight Globular Clusters (GCs) from the AstroSat/UVIT Legacy Survey program GlobULeS based on the observations carried out in two FUV filters (F148W and F169M). The FUV-optical and FUV-FUV color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of GCs with the proper motion membership were constructed by combining the UVIT data with HST UV Globular Cluster Survey (HUGS) data for inner regions and Gaia Early Data Release (EDR3) for regions outside the HST's field. We detect sources as faint as F148W $\sim$ 23.5~mag which are classified based on their locations in CMDs by overlaying stell…
We present early results from a detailed analysis of the BSS population in Galactic GCs based on HST data.Using proper motion cleaning of the color-magnitude diagrams we construct a large catalog of BSSs and study some population properties.Stellar evolutionary models are used to find stellar mass and age estimates for the BSS populations in order to establish constraints related to the dynamical interactions in which they may have formed.
Brown dwarfs can serve as both clocks and chemical tracers of the evolutionary history of the Milky Way due to their continuous cooling and high sensitivity of spectra to composition. We focus on brown dwarfs in globular clusters that host some of the oldest coeval populations in the galaxy. Currently, no brown dwarfs in globular clusters have been confirmed, but they are expected to be uncovered with advanced observational facilities such as JWST. In this paper we present a new set of stellar models specifically designed to investigate low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in $ω$ Centauri -- the la…
Globular clusters are both primary fossils of galactic evolution and formation and are ideal laboratories for constraining the evolution of low-mass and metal-poor stars. RR Lyrae and type II Cepheid variables are low-mass, radially pulsating stars that trace old-age stellar populations. These stellar standard candles in globular clusters are crucial for measuring their precise distances and, in turn, absolute ages, and for the calibration of the extragalactic distance scale. Herein, the evolutionary stages of RR Lyrae and type II Cepheids are discussed, and their pulsation properties, includi…
The paper presents an analysis of properties of populations of blue stragglers (BSs) in evolving globular clusters, based on numerical simulations done with the MOCCA code for various initial globular clusters conditions. We find that various populations of BSs strongly depend on the initial semi-major axes distributions. With a significant number of compact binaries, the number of evolutionary BSs can be also significant. In turn, for semi-major axes distributions preferring binaries with wider orbits, dynamical BSs are the dominant ones. Their formation scenario is very distinct: for wide bi…
We present the analysis of the radial distributions and kinematic properties of the multiple stellar populations (mPOPs) hosted in the globular cluster (GC) NGC 6352 as part of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) "UV Legacy Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters" program. NGC 6352 is one of the few GCs for which the mPOP tagging in appropriate color-magnitude diagrams is clear in all evolutionary sequences. We computed high-precision stellar proper motions for the stars from the cluster's core out to 75 arcsec ($\sim$1.5 core radii, or $\sim$0.6 half-light radii). We find that, in the region explor…
We propose that cold filamentary accretion in massive galaxies at high redshift can lead to the formation of star-forming clumps in the halos of these galaxies without the presence of dark matter sub-structure. In certain cases, these clumps can be the birth places of metal poor globular-clusters (MP GCs). Using cosmological simulations, we show that narrow streams of dense gas feeding massive galaxies from the cosmic web can fragment, producing star-forming clumps. We then derive an analytical model for the properties of streams as a function of halo mass and redshift, and assess when these a…
We use Hubble Space Telescope multicolour photometry of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae to uncover a population of 24 objects with no previous classification that are outliers from the single-star model tracks in the colour-magnitude diagram and yet are likely cluster members. By comparing those sources with evolutionary models and X-ray source catalogues, we were able to show that the majority of those sources are likely binary systems that do not have any X-ray source detected nearby, most possibly formed by a white dwarf and a main-sequence star and a small number of possible double-degener…
We examine whether the super star-forming clumps (R~1-3 kpc; M~10^8-10^9.5 Msun) now known to be a key component of star-forming galaxies at z~2 could be the formation sites of the locally observed old globular cluster population. We find that the stellar populations of these super star-forming clumps are excellent matches to those of local metal-rich globular clusters. Moreover, this globular cluster population is known to be associated with the bulges / thick disks of galaxies, and we show that its spatial distribution and kinematics are consistent with the current understanding of the assem…

In 1972, Zinn, Newell, & Gibson (ZNG) published a list of 156 candidate "UV-bright" stars they had found in 27 Galactic globular clusters (GCs), based on photographs in the U and V bands. UV-bright stars lie above the horizontal branch (HB) and blueward of the asymptotic-giant branch (AGB) and red-giant branch in the clusters' color-magnitude diagrams. They are in rapid evolutionary phases--if they are members and not unrelated bright foreground stars. The ZNG list has inspired numerous follow-up studies, aimed at understanding late stages of stellar evolution. However, the ZNG candidates were…

According to the classical view of globular clusters, stars inside globular clusters are evolved from the same giant molecular cloud. Then their stars' chemical compositions must be the same. But recent photometric and spectroscopic studies of globular clusters reveal the presence of more-than-one stellar populations inside globular clusters. This finding challenges our classical view of globular clusters. In this work, we investigated the possibility of solving multiple stellar populations problem in globular clusters using dark matter assumptions. We showed that the presence of dark matter i…
We present new Blue Straggler Star (BSS) catalogs in 38 Milky Way globular clusters (GCs) based on multi-passband and multi-epoch treasury survey data from the Hubble Space Telescope. We measure precise astrometry and relative proper motions of stars in all target clusters and performed a subsequent cluster membership selection. We study the accuracy of our proper motion measurements using estimates of central velocity dispersions and find very good agreement with previous studies in the literature. Finally, we present a homogeneous BSS selection method, that expands the classic BSS selection …
Lithium is created during the Big Bang nucleosynthesis and it is destroyed in stellar interiors at relatively low temperatures. However, it should be preserved in the stellar envelopes of unevolved stars and progressively diluted during mixing processes. In particular, after the first dredge-up along the RGB, lithium should be completely destroyed, but this is not what we observe today in globular clusters. This element allows to test stellar evolutionary models, as well as different types of polluters for second population stars in the multiple population scenarios. Due to the difficulty in t…
By using the high resolution spectrograph FLAMES@VLT we performed the first systematic campaign devoted to measure chemical abundances of blue straggler stars (BSSs). These stars, whose existence is not predicted by the canonical stellar evolutionary theory, are likely the product of the interactions between stars in the dense environment of Globular Clusters. Two main scenarios for BSS formation (mass transfer in binary systems and stellar collisions) have been proposed and hydrodynamical simulations predict different chemical patterns in the two cases, in particular C and O depletion for mas…
We combine MUSE spectroscopy and Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet (UV) photometry to perform a study of the chemistry and dynamics of the Galactic globular cluster Messier 80 (M80, NGC 6093). Previous studies have revealed three stellar populations that not only vary in their light-element abundances, but also in their radial distributions, with concentration decreasing with increasing nitrogen enrichment. This remarkable trend, which sets M80 apart from the other Galactic globular clusters, points towards a complex formation and evolutionary history. To better understand how M80 formed and …
We present VI-band photometry for stars in the metal-rich globular cluster NGC 6496. Our time-series data were cadenced to search for long period variables (LPVs) over a span of nearly two years, and our variability search yielded the discovery of thirteen new variable stars, of which six are LPVs, two are suspected LPVs, and five are short period eclipsing binaries. An additional star was found in the ASAS database, and we clarify its type and period. We argue that all of the eclipsing binaries are field stars, while 5-6 of the LPVs are members of NGC 6496. We compare the period-luminosity di…
The masses of supermassive black holes (SMBHs, M_BH=10^6-10^11 Msun) in the centres of galaxies are related to the host stellar spheroid mass and velocity dispersion. A key question is how these relations originate, and over which range of black hole masses they hold. It has been speculated that intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs, M_BH=10^2-10^5 Msun) could play a fundamental role in the growth of SMBHs. A handful of IMBHs has recently been detected in Galactic globular clusters (GCs), but their masses are inconsistent with the galactic scaling relations of SMBHs. In this Letter, we derive t…
