Flip graphs are graphs on combinatorial objects in which the adjacency relation reflects a local change in the underlying objects. In this thesis we introduce Yoke graphs, a family of flip graphs that generalizes previously studied families of flip graphs on colored triangle-free triangulations, arc permutations and geometric caterpillars. Our main results are the computation of the diameter of an arbitrary Yoke graph and a full characterization of the automorphism group of this family of graphs. We also show that Yoke graphs are Schreier graphs of the affine Weyl group of type $\tilde{C}_m$.
The approach we take in the computation of the diameter is different from the ones used for colored triangle-free triangulations and arc permutations. We show that the approach used for arc permutation graphs does not extend to Yoke graphs. At the heart of our proof lies the idea of transforming a diameter evaluation into an eccentricity problem. The characterization of the automorphism group is a new result for the above mentioned three special families of Yoke graphs.
In this paper we introduce Yoke graphs, a family of flip graphs that generalizes several previously studied families of graphs: colored triangle free triangulations, arc permutations and caterpillars. Our main result is the computation of the diameter of an arbitrary Yoke graph.
This article is about measuring and visualizing distances between domino tilings. Given two tilings of a simply connected square tiled surface, we're interested in the minimum number of flips between two tilings. Given a certain shape, we're interested in computing the diameters of the flip graphs, meaning the maximal distance between any two of its tilings. Building on work of Thurston and others, we give geometric interpretations of distances which result in formulas for the diameters of the flip graphs of rectangles or Aztec diamonds.
Felsner introduced a cycle reversal, namely the `flip' reversal, for α-orientations (i.e., each vertex admits a prescribed out-degree) of a graph G embedded on the plane and further proved that the set of all the α-orientations of G carries a distributive lattice with respect to the flip reversals. In this paper, we give an explicit formula for the minimum number of flips needed to transform one α-orientation into another for graphs embedded on the plane or sphere, respectively.
Planar bicolored (plabic) graphs are combinatorial objects introduced by Postnikov to give parameterizations of the positroid cells of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian $\text{Gr}^{\geq 0}(n,k)$. Any two plabic graphs for the same positroid cell can be related by a sequence of certain moves. The flip graph has plabic graphs as vertices and has edges connecting the plabic graphs which are related by a single move. A recent result of Galashin shows that plabic graphs can be seen as cross-sections of zonotopal tilings for the cyclic zonotope $Z(n,3)$. Taking this perspective, we show that the …
The flip-graph of a convex polygon $π$ is the graph whose vertices are the triangulations of $π$ and whose edges correspond to flips between them. The eccentricity of a triangulation $T$ of $π$ is the largest possible distance in this graph from $T$ to any triangulation of $π$. It is well known that, when all $n-3$ interior edges of $T$ are incident to the same vertex, the eccentricity of $T$ in the flip-graph of $π$ is exactly $n-3$, where $n$ denotes the number of vertices of $π$. Here, this statement is generalized to arbitrary triangulations. Denoting by $n-3-k$ the largest number of inter…
Let $G$ be a graph embedded on an orientable surface. Given a class ${\cal C}$ of facial circuits of $G$ as a forbidden class, we give a sufficient-necessary condition for that an $α$-orientation (orientation with prescribed out-degrees) of $G$ can be transformed into another by a sequence of flips on non-forbidden circuits and further give an explicit formula for the minimum number of such flips. We also consider the connection among all $α$-orientations by defining a directed graph ${\bf D}({\cal C})$, namely the ${\cal C}$-forbidden flip graph. We show that if ${\cal C}\not=\emptyset$, then…
We study a problem motivated by a question related to quantum-error-correcting codes. Combinatorially, it involves the following graph parameter: $$f(G)=\min\set{|A|+|\{x\in V\setminus A : d_A(x)\text{is odd}\}| : A\neq\emptyset},$$ where $V$ is the vertex set of $G$ and $d_A(x)$ is the number of neighbors of $x$ in $A$. We give asymptotically tight estimates of $f$ for the random graph $G_{n,p}$ when $p$ is constant. Also, if $$f(n)=\max\set{f(G): |V(G)|=n}$$ then we show that $f(n)\leq (0.382+o(1))n$.
In a region $R$ consisting of unit squares, a domino is the union of two adjacent squares and a (domino) tiling is a collection of dominoes with disjoint interior whose union is the region. The flip graph $\mathcal{T}(R)$ is defined on the set of all tilings of $R$ such that two tilings are adjacent if we change one to another by a flip (a $90^{\circ}$ rotation of a pair of side-by-side dominoes). It is well-known that $\mathcal{T}(R)$ is connected when $R$ is simply connected. By using graph theoretical approach, we show that the flip graph of $2m\times(2n+1)$ quadriculated cylinder is still …
Let $X=(V,E)$ be a finite simple connected graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. A configuration is an assignment of one of two colors, black or white, to each edge of $X.$ A move applied to a configuration is to select a black edge $ε\in E$ and change the colors of all adjacent edges of $ε.$ Given an initial configuration and a final configuration, try to find a sequence of moves that transforms the initial configuration into the final configuration. This is the edge-flipping puzzle on $X,$ and it corresponds to a group action. This group is called the edge-flipping group $\mathbf{W}_E(X)$ o…
We are interested in constructing zonotopes which are combinatorially nonequivalent but have the same face vector. In this paper we introduce a quadrilateral flip operation on graphs. We show that, if one graph is obtained from another graph by a flip, then the face vectors of the graphical zonotopes of these two graphs are the same. In this way, we can easily construct a class of combinatorially nonequivalent graphical zonotopes which share the same face vector. It is known that all triangulations of the n-gon are connected through the flip operation. Thus their graphical zonotopes have the s…

We associate to triangulations of infinite type surface a type of flip graph where simultaneous flips are allowed. Our main focus is on understanding exactly when two triangulations can be related by a sequence of flips. A consequence of our results is that flip graphs for infinite type surfaces have uncountably many connected components.
The flip graph of triangulations has as vertices all triangulations of a convex $n$-gon, and an edge between any two triangulations that differ in exactly one edge. An $r$-rainbow cycle in this graph is a cycle in which every inner edge of the triangulation appears exactly $r$ times. This notion of a rainbow cycle extends in a natural way to other flip graphs. In this paper we investigate the existence of $r$-rainbow cycles for three different flip graphs on classes of geometric objects: the aforementioned flip graph of triangulations of a convex $n$-gon, the flip graph of plane trees on an ar…
In this paper, we study the flip graph on the perfect matchings of a complete graph of even order. We investigate its combinatorial and spectral properties including connections to the signed reversal graph and we improve a previous upper bound on its chromatic number.
We study flip graphs of triangulations whose maximum vertex degree is bounded by a constant $k$. In particular, we consider triangulations of sets of $n$ points in convex position in the plane and prove that their flip graph is connected if and only if $k > 6$; the diameter of the flip graph is $O(n^2)$. We also show that, for general point sets, flip graphs of pointed pseudo-triangulations can be disconnected for $k \leq 9$, and flip graphs of triangulations can be disconnected for any $k$. Additionally, we consider a relaxed version of the original problem. We allow the violation of the degr…
Flip-graph connectedness is established here for the vertex set of the 4-dimensional cube. It is found as a consequence that this vertex set has 92 487 256 triangulations, partitioned into 247 451 symmetry classes.
We give an example of a three-dimensional zonotope whose set of tight zonotopal tilings is not connected by flips. Using this, we show that the set of triangulations of $Δ^4 \times Δ^n$ is not connected by flips for large $n$. Our proof makes use of a non-explicit probabilistic construction.
Given a finite point set P in general position in the plane, a full triangulation is a maximal straight-line embedded plane graph on P. A partial triangulation is a full triangulation of some subset P' of P containing all extreme points in P. A bistellar flip on a partial triangulation flips an edge (an edge flip), removes a non-extreme point of degree 3, or adds a point in P \ P' as vertex of degree 3. The bistellar flip graph has all partial triangulations as vertices, and a pair of partial triangulations is adjacent if they can be obtained from one another by a bistellar flip. The edge flip…

This paper is about the geometry of flip-graphs associated to triangulations of surfaces. More precisely, we consider a topological surface with a privileged boundary curve and study the spaces of its triangulations with n vertices on the boundary curve. The surfaces we consider topologically fill this boundary curve so we call them filling surfaces. The associated flip-graphs are infinite whenever the mapping class group of the surface (the group of self-homeomorphisms up to isotopy) is infinite, and we can obtain moduli spaces of flip-graphs by considering the flip-graphs up to the action of…
This article is about the graph genus of certain well studied graphs in surface theory: the curve, pants and flip graphs. We study both the genus of these graphs and the genus of their quotients by the mapping class group. The full graphs, except for in some low complexity cases, all have infinite genus. The curve graph once quotiented by the mapping class group has the genus of a complete graph so its genus is well known by a theorem of Ringel and Youngs. For the other two graphs we are able to identify the precise growth rate of the graph genus in terms of the genus of the underlying surface…
The flip graph is the graph whose nodes correspond to non-isomorphic combinatorial triangulations and whose edges connect pairs of triangulations that can be obtained one from the other by flipping a single edge. In this note we show that the diameter of the flip graph is at least $\frac{7n}{3} + Θ(1)$, improving upon the previous $2n + Θ(1)$ lower bound.
Flip graphs are a ubiquitous class of graphs, which encode relations induced on a set of combinatorial objects by elementary, local changes. Skeletons of associahedra, for instance, are the graphs induced by quadrilateral flips in triangulations of a convex polygon. For some definition of a flip graph, a natural computational problem to consider is the flip distance: Given two objects, what is the minimum number of flips needed to transform one into the other? We consider flip graphs on orientations of simple graphs, where flips consist of reversing the direction of some edges. More precisely,…
We study flip-graphs of triangulations on topological surfaces where distance is measured by counting the number of necessary flip operations between two triangulations. We focus on surfaces of positive genus $g$ with a single boundary curve and $n$ marked points on this curve; we consider triangulations up to homeomorphism with the marked points as their vertices. Our main results are upper and lower bounds on the maximal distance between triangulations depending on $n$ and can be thought of as bounds on the diameter of flip-graphs up to the quotient of underlying homeomorphism groups. The ma…
We show that the triangulations of a finite point set form a flip graph that can be embedded isometrically into a hypercube, if and only if the point set has no empty convex pentagon. Point sets of this type include convex subsets of lattices, points on two lines, and several other infinite families. As a consequence, flip distance in such point sets can be computed efficiently.
In this paper, we study the lattice properties of posets of torsion pairs in the module category of a family of representation-finite gentle algebras called tiling algebras, introduced by Coelho Simoes and Parsons. We present a combinatorial model for torsion pairs using polyogonal subdivisions of a convex polygon. We use this model and the lattice theory to classify 2-term simple-minded collections in the bounded derived category of the corresponding tiling algebra. As a consequence, we obtain a characterization of c-matrices for any quiver mutation-equivalent to a type A Dynkin quiver. Our m…
Mahlmann and Schindelhauer (2005) defined a Markov chain which they called $k$-Flipper, and showed that it is irreducible on the set of all connected regular graphs of a given degree (at least 3). We study the 1-Flipper chain, which we call the flip chain, and prove that the flip chain converges rapidly to the uniform distribution over connected $2r$-regular graphs with $n$ vertices, where $n\geq 8$ and $r = r(n)\geq 2$. Formally, we prove that the distribution of the flip chain will be within $\varepsilon$ of uniform in total variation distance after $\text{poly}(n,r,\log(\varepsilon^{-1}))$ …
The toric Hilbert scheme is a parameter space for all ideals with the same multi-graded Hilbert function as a given toric ideal. Unlike the classical Hilbert scheme, it is unknown whether toric Hilbert schemes are connected. We construct a graph on all the monomial ideals on the scheme, called the flip graph, and prove that the toric Hilbert scheme is connected if and only if the flip graph is connected. These graphs are used to exhibit curves in P^4 whose associated toric Hilbert schemes have arbitrary dimension. We show that the flip graph maps into the Baues graph of all triangulations of t…
We initiate the study of $k$-edge-connected orientations of undirected graphs through edge flips for $k \geq 2$. We prove that in every orientation of an undirected $2k$-edge-connected graph, there exists a sequence of edges such that flipping their directions one by one does not decrease the edge-connectivity, and the final orientation is $k$-edge-connected. This yields an ``edge-flip based'' new proof of Nash-Williams' theorem: an undirected graph $G$ has a $k$-edge-connected orientation if and only if $G$ is $2k$-edge-connected. As another consequence of the theorem, we prove that the edge-…
This paper is devoted to advancing the theoretical understanding of the iterated immediate snapshot (IIS) complexity of the Weak Symmetry Breaking task (WSB). Our rather unexpected main theorem states that there exist infinitely many values of n, such that WSB for n~processes is solvable by a certain explicitly constructed 3-round IIS protocol. In particular, the minimal number of rounds, which an IIS protocol needs in order to solve the WSB task, does not go to infinity, when the number of processes goes to infinity. Our methods can also be used to generate such values of n. We phrase our pro…
We explore several families of flip-graphs, all related to polygons or punctured polygons. In particular, we consider the topological flip-graphs of once-punctured polygons which, in turn, contain all possible geometric flip-graphs of polygons with a marked point as embedded sub-graphs. Our main focus is on the geometric properties of these graphs and how they relate to one another. In particular, we show that the embeddings between them are strongly convex (or, said otherwise, totally geodesic). We also find bounds on the diameters of these graphs, sometimes using the strongly convex embeddin…
The space of topological decompositions into triangulations of a surface has a natural graph structure where two triangulations share an edge if they are related by a so-called flip. This space is a sort of combinatorial Teichmüller space and is quasi-isometric to the underlying mapping class group. We study this space in two main directions. We first show that strata corresponding to triangulations containing a same multiarc are strongly convex within the whole space and use this result to deduce properties about the mapping class group. We then focus on the quotient of this space by the mapp…
