In this paper, we study the secure degrees-of-freedom (SDoF) characterization for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) X channel with confidential messages and delayed CSIT. In particular, we propose a transmission scheme, which can be regarded as a generalization of the state-of-the-art scheme without security and with delayed CSIT. The key of this generalization is performing the security analysis, by which we derive the optimal duration of the artificial noise transmission phase. As a result, we derive the sum-SDoF lower bound. Furthermore, we reveal that if the number of receive antennas, denoted by N, is fixed, the minimum number of transmit antennas achieving the maximum of the lower bound is $\frac{7+\sqrt{33}}{8}N$.
In the setting of the two-user broadcast channel, where a two-antenna transmitter communicates information to two single-antenna receivers, recent work by Maddah-Ali and Tse has shown that perfect knowledge of delayed channel state information at the transmitter (perfect delayed CSIT) can be useful, even in the absence of any knowledge of current CSIT. Similar benefits of perfect delayed CSIT were revealed in recent work by Kobayashi et al., Yang et al., and Gou and Jafar, which extended the above to the case of perfect delayed CSIT and imperfect current CSIT. The work here considers the gener…
The two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel (IC) with arbitrary number of antennas at each terminal is considered and the degrees of freedom (DoF) region is characterized in the presence of noiseless channel output feedback from each receiver to its respective transmitter and availability of delayed channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT). It is shown that having output feedback and delayed CSIT can strictly enlarge the DoF region of the MIMO IC when compared to the case in which only delayed CSIT is present. The proposed coding schemes that achieve the…
The channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) play an important role in the performance of wireless networks. The CSIT model can be delayed and imperfect-quality, since the feedback link has a delay and the channel state information (CSI) feedback has distortion. In this paper, we thus characterize the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) region of the two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel with delayed imperfect-quality CSIT, where the antenna configurations can be arbitrary. The converse proof of DoF region is based on the enhancement of physically degraded channel. T…
The work considers the two-user MISO broadcast channel with gradual and delayed accumulation of channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), and addresses the question of how much feedback is necessary, and when, in order to achieve a certain degrees-of-freedom (DoF) performance. Motivated by limited-capacity feedback links that may not immediately convey perfect CSIT, and focusing on the block fading scenario, we consider a progressively increasing CSIT quality as time progresses across the coherence period (T channel uses - evolving current CSIT), or at any time after (delayed CSIT).…
We consider the MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) Gaussian interference channel with i.i.d. fading across antennas and channel uses and with the delayed local channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT). For the two-user case, achievability results for the degrees of freedom (DoF) region of this channel are provided. We also prove the tightness of our achievable DoF region for some antenna configurations. Interestingly, there are some cases in which the DoF region with delayed local CSIT is identical to the DoF region with perfect CSIT and that is strictly larger than the DoF regi…
We study the impact of delayed channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT) in two-unicast wireless networks with a layered topology and arbitrary connectivity. We introduce a technique to obtain outer bounds to the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) region through the new graph-theoretic notion of bottleneck nodes. Such nodes act as informational bottlenecks only under the assumption of delayed CSIT, and imply asymmetric DoF bounds of the form $mD_1 + D_2 \leq m$. Combining this outer-bound technique with new achievability schemes, we characterize the sum DoF of a class of two-unicast wireless …
To fully utilize the spatial multiplexing gains or array gains of massive MIMO, the channel state information must be obtained at the transmitter side (CSIT). However, conventional CSIT estimation approaches are not suitable for FDD massive MIMO systems because of the overwhelming training and feedback overhead. In this paper, we consider multi-user massive MIMO systems and deploy the compressive sensing (CS) technique to reduce the training as well as the feedback overhead in the CSIT estimation. The multi-user massive MIMO systems exhibits a hidden joint sparsity structure in the user channe…
We establish the degrees of freedom of the two-user X-channel with delayed channel knowledge at transmitters (i.e., delayed CSIT), assuming linear coding strategies at the transmitters. We derive a new upper bound and characterize the linear degrees of freedom of this network to be 6/5. The converse builds upon our development of a general lemma that shows that, if two distributed transmitters employ linear strategies, the ratio of the dimensions of received linear subspaces at the two receivers cannot exceed 3/2, due to delayed CSIT. As a byproduct, we also apply this general lemma to the thr…
In this paper, a new proof for the degrees of freedom (DoF) region of the K-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC) with no channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) and perfect channel state information at the receivers (CSIR) is provided. Based on this proof, the capacity region of a certain class of MIMO BC with channel distribution information at the transmitter (CDIT) and perfect CSIR is derived. Finally, an outer bound for the DoF region of the MIMO interference channel (IC) with no CSIT is provided.
In many wireless systems, the channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) can not be learned until after a transmission has taken place and is thereby outdated. In this paper, we study the benefits of delayed CSIT on a block-fading channel at finite blocklength. First, the achievable rates of a family of codes that allows the number of codewords to expand during transmission, based on delayed CSIT, are characterized. A fixed-length and a variable-length characterization of the rates are provided using the dependency testing bound and the variable-length setting introduced by Polyanskiy…
Finally, an outer bound for the DoF region of the K-user MIMO interference channel (IC) with no CSIT is provided.
In this paper, we propose a new retrospective interference alignment for two-cell multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interfering multiple access channels (IMAC) with the delayed channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT). It is shown that having delayed CSIT can strictly increase the sum-DoF compared to the case of no CSIT. The key idea is to align multiple interfering signals from adjacent cells onto a small dimensional subspace over time by fully exploiting the previously received signals as side information with outdated CSIT in a distributed manner. Remarkably, we show that th…
The degrees of freedom (DoF) region of the two-user MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) interference channel is established under a new model termed as hybrid CSIT. In this model, one transmitter has delayed channel state information (CSI) and the other transmitter has instantaneous CSIT, of incoming channel matrices at the respective unpaired receivers, and neither transmitter has any knowledge of the incoming channel matrices of its respective paired receiver. The DoF region for hybrid CSIT, and consequently that of $2\times2\times3^{5}$ CSIT models, is completely characterized, and a new …
This paper studies two-user MIMO interference channel with isotropic fading. We assume that users are equipped with arbitrary number of antennas and the channel state information (CSI) is available at receivers only. An outer bound is obtained for the degree of freedom region, which suggests the loss of degrees of freedom due to the lack of CSI at transmitters under many circumstances.
We consider two fundamental multi-user channel models: the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channel with one helper (WTH) and the MIMO multiple access wiretap channel (MAC-WT). In each case, the eavesdropper has $K$ antennas while the remaining terminals have $N$ antennas each. We consider a fast fading channel where the channel state information (CSI) of the legitimate receiver is available at the transmitters but no channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT) is available for the eavesdropper's channel. We determine the optimal sum secure degrees of freedom (s.d.o.f.) f…
To study the effect of lack of up-to-date channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT), we consider two-user binary fading interference channels with Delayed-CSIT. We characterize the capacity region for such channels under homogeneous assumption where channel gains have identical and independent distributions across time and space, eliminating the possibility of exploiting time/space correlation. We introduce and discuss several novel coding opportunities created by outdated CSIT that can enlarge the achievable rate region. The capacity-achieving scheme relies on accurate combination,…
Channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is essential for frequency-division duplexing (FDD) massive MIMO systems, but conventional solutions involve overwhelming overhead both for downlink channel training and uplink channel feedback. In this letter, we propose a joint CSIT acquisition scheme to reduce the overhead. Particularly, unlike conventional schemes where each user individually estimates its own channel and then feed it back to the base station (BS), we propose that all scheduled users directly feed back the pilot observation to the BS, and then joint CSIT recovery can be r…
The degrees of freedom (DoF) of the $K$-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel are studied when perfect, but delayed channel state information is available at the transmitter side (delayed CSIT). Recent works have proposed schemes that achieve increasing DoF values, but at the cost of long communication delays. This work proposes three linear precoding strategies, formulated in such a way that the achievable DoF can be derived as a function of the transmission delay, thus elucidating its achievable DoF-delay trade-off. All strategies are based on the concept of interfe…
This work considers the multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC), where a transmitter with M antennas transmits information to K single-antenna users, and where - as expected - the quality and timeliness of channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is imperfect. Motivated by the fundamental question of how much feedback is necessary to achieve a certain performance, this work seeks to establish bounds on the tradeoff between degrees-of-freedom (DoF) performance and CSIT feedback quality. Specifically, this work provides a novel DoF region outer bound for t…
Conventional MU-MIMO techniques, e.g. Linear Zero-Forced Beamforming (LZFB), require sufficiently accurate channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) in order to realize spectral efficient transmission (degree of freedom gains). In practical settings, however, CSIT accuracy can be limited by a number of issues including CSI estimation, CSI feedback delay between user terminals to base stations, and the time/frequency coherence of the channel. The latter aspects of CSIT-feedback delay and channel-dynamics can lead to significant challenges in the deployment of efficient MU-MIMO systems…
We investigate the problem of secure transmission over a two-user multi-input multi-output (MIMO) X-channel in which channel state information is provided with one-unit delay to both transmitters (CSIT), and each receiver feeds back its channel output to a different transmitter. We refer to this model as MIMO X-channel with asymmetric output feedback and delayed CSIT. The transmitters are equipped with M-antennas each, and the receivers are equipped with N-antennas each. For this model, accounting for both messages at each receiver, we characterize the optimal sum secure degrees of freedom (SD…
The impact of imperfect CSIT on the degrees of freedom (DoF) of a time correlated MISO Broadcast Channel has drawn a lot of attention recently. Maddah-Ali and Tse have shown that the completely stale CSIT still benefit the DoF. In very recent works, Yang et al. have extended the results by integrating the partial current CSIT for a two-user MISO broadcast channel. However, those researches so far focused on a symmetric case. In this contribution, we investigate a more general case where the transmitter has knowledge of current CSI of both users with unequal qualities. The essential ingredient …
In this paper, we study the effect of the absence of channel knowledge for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) networks. Specifically, we assume perfect channel state information at the receivers, no channel state information at the transmitter(s), and independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) Rayleigh fading across antennas, users and time slots. We provide the characterization of the degrees of freedom (DoF) region for a 2-user MIMO broadcast channel. We then provide a DoF region outer bound for a 2-user MIMO interference channel. This bound is shown to be tight for all possible combina…
We study the sum degrees of freedom (DoF) of a class of multi-layer relay-aided MIMO broadcast networks with delayed channel state information at transmitters (CSIT). In the assumed network a K-antenna source intends to communicate to K single-antenna destinations, with the help of N-2 layers of K full-duplex single-antenna relays. We consider two practical delayed CSIT feedback scenarios. If the source can obtain the CSI feedback signals from all layers, we prove the optimal sum DoF of the network to be K/(1+1/2+...+1/K). If the CSI feedback is only within each hop, we show that when K=2 the …
We investigate the downlink multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) scheduling problem in the presence of imperfect Channel State Information at the transmitter (CSIT) that comprises of coarse and current CSIT as well as finer but delayed CSIT. This scheduling problem is characterized by an intricate `exploitation - exploration tradeoff' between scheduling the users based on current CSIT for immediate gains, and scheduling them to obtain finer albeit delayed CSIT and potentially larger future gains. We solve this scheduling problem by formulating a frame based joint scheduling and feedback approach, where i…
This paper theoretically characterizes the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) region of order-$(K-1)$ messages for the $K$-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel with delayed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) and arbitrary antenna configurations, where the transmitter has $M$ antennas and the receiver $i=1,2,\cdots,K$ has $N_i$ antennas. For the converse, we first derive the DoF region of order-$(K-1)$ messages for the $K$-user MIMO broadcast channel with no CSIT and arbitrary antenna configurations with the aid of the proposed Genie-bound, and then establish the …
The generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) of the two user symmetric multiple input multiple output (MIMO) interference channel (IC) are characterized as a function of the channel strength levels and the level of channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT). In this symmetric setting, each transmitter is equipped with M antennas, each receiver is equipped with N antennas, and both cross links have the same strength parameter $α$ and the same channel uncertainty parameter $β$. The main challenge resides in the proof of the outer bound which is accomplished by a generalization of the alig…
In this paper, we investigate the generalized degrees-of-freedom (GDoF) of the asymmetric interference channel with delayed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), where each transmitter has two antennas, each receiver has one antenna, and the strength for each interfering link can vary. The optimal sum-GDoF is characterized by matched converse and achievability proof. Through our results, we also reveal that in our antenna setting, the symmetric GDoF lower bound in [Mohanty et. al, TIT 2019] can be elevated, and the symmetric GDoF upper bound in [Mohanty et. al, TIT 2019] is tigh…
This paper proposes an interference alignment method with distributed and delayed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) for a class of interference networks. The core idea of the proposed method is to align interference signals over time at the unintended receivers in a distributed manner. With the proposed method, achievable trade-offs between the sum of degrees of freedom (sum-DoF) and feedback delay of CSI are characterized in both the X-channel and three-user interference channel to reveal the impact on how the CSI feedback delay affects the sum-DoF of the interference networ…
This paper focuses on linear beamforming design and power allocation strategy for ergodic rate optimization in a two-user Multiple-Input-Single-Output (MISO) system with statistical and delayed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). We propose a transmission strategy, denoted as Statistical Alternative MAT (SAMAT), which exploits both channel statistics and delayed CSIT. Firstly, with statistical CSIT only, we focus on statistical beamforming (SBF) design that maximizes a lower bound on the ergodic sum-rate. Secondly, relying on both statistical and delayed CSIT, an iterative alg…
The K-user multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC) with no channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is considered, where each receiver is assumed to be equipped with reconfigurable antennas capable of choosing a subset of receiving modes from several preset modes. Under general antenna configurations, the sum linear degrees of freedom (LDoF) of the K-user MIMO BC with reconfigurable antennas is completely characterized, which corresponds to the maximum sum DoF achievable by linear coding strategies. The LDoF region is further characterized for a class of ant…
We study the Gaussian MIMOME wiretap channel where a transmitter wishes to communicate a confidential message to a legitimate receiver in the presence of eavesdroppers, while the eavesdroppers should not be able to decode the confidential message. Each node in the network is equipped with arbitrary number of antennas. Furthermore, channels are time varying, and there is no channel state information available at the transmitter (CSIT) with respect to eavesdroppers' channels; and transmitter only has access to delayed CSIT of the channel to the legitimate receiver. The secure degrees of freedom …
We consider the time correlated MISO broadcast channel where the transmitter has partial knowledge on the current channel state, in addition to delayed channel state information (CSI). Rather than exploiting only the current CSI, as the zero-forcing precoding, or only the delayed CSI, as the Maddah-Ali-Tse (MAT) scheme, we propose a seamless strategy that takes advantage of both. The achievable degrees of freedom of the proposed scheme is characterized in terms of the quality of the current channel knowledge.
A Dirty Paper Coding (DPC) based transmission scheme for the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio channel (CRC) is studied when there is imperfect and perfect channel knowledge at the transmitters (CSIT) and the receivers, respectively. In particular, the problem of optimizing the sum-rate of the MIMO CRC over the transmit covariance matrices is dealt with. Such an optimization, under the DPC-based transmission strategy, needs to be performed jointly with an optimization over the inflation factor. To this end, first the problem of determination of inflation factor ove…
The generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) region of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian Z-interference channel with an arbitrary number of antennas at each node is established under the assumption of delayed channel state information at transmitters (CSIT). The GDoF region is parameterized by $α$, which links the interference-to-noise ratio (INR) to the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) via $INR=SNR^α$. A new outer bound for the GDoF region is established by maximizing a bound on the weighted sum-rate of the two users, which in turn is obtained by using a combination of genie-aided si…
We study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the multiple-input multiple-output X-channel (MIMO XC) with delayed channel state information at the transmitters (delayed CSIT), assuming linear coding strategies at the transmitters. We present two results: 1) the linear sum DoF for MIMO XC with general antenna configurations, and 2) the linear DoF region for MIMO XC with symmetric antennas. The converse for each result is based on developing a novel rank-ratio inequality that characterizes the maximum ratio between the dimensions of received linear subspaces at the two multiple-antenna receivers. The…
Efficient channel state information at transmitter (CSIT) for frequency division duplex (FDD) massive MIMO can facilitate its backward compatibility with existing FDD cellular networks. To date, several CSIT estimation schemes have been proposed for FDD single-cell massive MIMO systems, but they fail to consider inter-cell-interference (ICI) and suffer from downlink pilot contamination in multi-cell scenario. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a compressive sensing (CS)-based CSIT estimation scheme to combat ICI in FDD multi-cell massive MIMO systems. Specifically, angle-domain massive…
In this paper, we analyze the fundamental tradeoff of diversity and multiplexing in multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channels with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). We show that with imperfect CSIT, a higher diversity gain as well as a more efficient diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) can be achieved. In the case of multi-input single-output (MISO)/single-input multi-output (SIMO) channels with K transmit/receive antennas, one can achieve a diversity gain of d(r)=K(1-r+Kα) at spatial multiplexing gain r, where αis the CSIT quality defined in this paper. For gener…
The $2$ user MIMO interference channel with arbitrary antenna configurations is studied under arbitrary levels of partial CSIT for each of the channels, to find the degrees of freedom (DoF) achievable by either user while the other user achieves his full interference-free DoF. The goal is to gain new insights due to the inclusion of MIMO (multiple antennas at both transmitters and receivers) into the signal space partitioning schemes associated with partial CSIT. An interesting idea that emerges from this study is "elevated multiplexing" where the signals are split into streams and transmitted…
Channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) aids interference management in many communication systems. Due to channel state information (CSI) feedback delay and time-variation in the wireless channel, perfect CSIT is not realistic. In this paper, the CSI feedback delay-DoF gain trade-off is characterized for the multi-user vector broadcast channel. A major insight is that it is possible to achieve the optimal degrees of freedom (DoF) gain if the delay is less than a certain fraction of the channel coherence time. This precisely characterizes the intuition that a small delay should be …
This work studies the optimal Degrees-of-Freedom (DoF) of the $K$-User MISO Broadcast Channel (BC) with delayed Channel-State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) and with additional current noisy CSIT where the current channel estimation error scales in~$P^{-α}$ for $α\in[0,1]$. This papers establishes for the first time the optimal DoF in this setting thanks to a new transmission scheme which achieves the elusive DoF-optimal combining of the Maddah-Ali and Tse scheme (MAT) introduced in their seminal work in $2010$ with Zero-Forcing (ZF) for an arbitrary number of users. The derived sum DoF…
The question of whether the degrees of freedom (DoF) of multi-user networks can be enhanced even under isotropic fading and no channel state information (or output feedback) at the transmitters (CSIT) is investigated. Toward this end, the two-user MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) broadcast and interference channels are studied with no side-information whatsoever at the transmitters and with receivers equipped with full-duplex radios. The full-duplex feature allows for receiver cooperation because each receiver, in addition to receiving the signals sent by the transmitters, can also simul…
We consider a multi-cell MIMO downlink (network MIMO) where $B$ base-stations (BS) with $M$ antennas connected to a central station (CS) serve $K$ single-antenna user terminals (UT). Although many works have shown the potential benefits of network MIMO, the conclusion critically depends on the underlying assumptions such as channel state information at transmitters (CSIT) and backhaul links. In this paper, by focusing on the impact of partial CSIT, we propose an outage-efficient strategy. Namely, with side information of all UT's messages and local CSIT, each BS applies zero-forcing (ZF) beamf…
The degrees of freedom (DoF) region is characterized for the $2$-user multiple input multiple output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC), where the transmitter is equipped with $M$ antennas, the two receivers are equipped with $N_1$ and $N_2$ antennas, and the levels of channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) for the two users are parameterized by $β_1, β_2$, respectively. The achievability of the DoF region was established by Hao, Rassouli and Clerckx, but no proof of optimality was heretofore available. The proof of optimality is provided in this work with the aid of sum-set inequaliti…
This paper considers a K-user Multiple-Input-Single-Output (MISO) Interference Channel (IC), where the channel state information obtained by the transmitters (CSIT) is perfect, but completely outdated. A Retrospective Interference Alignment (RIA) using such delayed CSIT was proposed by the authors of [1] for the MISO Broadcast Channel (BC), but the extension to the MISO IC is a non-trivial step as each transmitter only has the message intended for the corresponding user. Recently, [7] focused on a Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) IC and solved such bottleneck by inventing a distributed higher…
The 3-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) with hybrid channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is considered. In this framework, there is perfect and instantaneous CSIT from a subset of users and delayed CSIT from the remaining users. We present new results on the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the 3-user MISO BC with hybrid CSIT. In particular, for the case of 2 transmit antennas, we show that with perfect CSIT from one user and delayed CSIT from the remaining two users, the optimal DoF is 5/3. For the case of 3 transmit antennas and the same hybrid CSIT se…
For the two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel with delayed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) and arbitrary antenna configurations, all the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) regions are obtained. However, for the three-user MIMO broadcast channel with delayed CSIT and arbitrary antenna configurations, the DoF region of order-2 messages is still unclear and only a partial achievable DoF region of order-1 messages is obtained, where the order-2 messages and order-1 messages are desired by two receivers and one receiver, respectively. In this paper, for the thre…
In a multiuser MIMO broadcast channel, the rate performance is affected by the multiuser interference when the Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) is imperfect. To tackle the interference problem, a Rate-Splitting (RS) approach has been proposed recently, which splits one user's message into a common and a private part, and superimposes the common message on top of the private messages. The common message is drawn from a public codebook and should be decoded by all users. In this paper, we propose a novel and general framework, denoted as Hierarchical Rate Splitting (HRS), that…
An outer bound for the degrees of freedom (DoF) region of the K-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) is developed under the hybrid channel state information at transmitter (CSIT) model, in which the transmitter has instantaneous CSIT of channels to a subset of the receivers and delayed CSIT of channels to the rest of the receivers. For the 3-user MISO BC, when the transmitter has instantaneous CSIT of the channel to one receiver and delayed CSIT of channels to the other two, two new communication schemes are designed, which are able to achieve the DoF tuple of $\left…
The degrees of freedom (DoF) region of the fast-fading MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) Gaussian broadcast channel (BC) is studied when there is delayed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). In this setting, the channel matrices are assumed to vary independently across time and the transmitter is assumed to know the channel matrices with some arbitrary finite delay. An outer-bound to the DoF region of the general $K$-user MIMO BC (with an arbitrary number of antennas at each terminal) is derived. This outer-bound is then shown to be tight for two classes of MIMO BCs, namely…
Extending recent findings on the two-user MISO broadcast channel (BC) with imperfect and delayed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), the work here explores the performance of the two user MIMO BC and the two user MIMO interference channel (MIMO IC), in the presence of feedback with evolving quality and timeliness. Under standard assumptions, and in the presence of M antennas per transmitter and N antennas per receiver, the work derives the DoF region, which is optimal for a large regime of sufficiently good (but potentially imperfect) delayed CSIT. This region concisely captur…
Recent information theoretic results suggest that precoding on the multi-user downlink MIMO channel with delayed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) could lead to data rates much beyond the ones obtained without any CSIT, even in extreme situations when the delayed channel feedback is made totally obsolete by a feedback delay exceeding the channel coherence time. This surprising result is based on the ideas of interference repetition and alignment which allow the receivers to reconstruct information symbols which canceling out the interference completely, making it an optimal s…
The $K$-user single-input single-output (SISO) AWGN interference channel and $2\times K$ SISO AWGN X channel are considered where the transmitters have the delayed channel state information (CSI) through noiseless feedback links. Multi-phase transmission schemes are proposed for both channels which possess novel ingredients, namely, multi-phase partial interference nulling, distributed interference management via user scheduling, and distributed higher-order symbol generation. The achieved degrees of freedom (DoF) values are greater than the best previously known DoFs for both channels with de…
In this paper, we investigate the secure rate-splitting for the two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) and a multiple-antenna jammer, where each receiver has an equal number of antennas and the jammer has perfect channel state information (CSI). Specifically, we design a secure rate-splitting multiple-access strategy, where the security of split private and common messages is ensured by precoder design with joint nulling and aligning the leakage information, regarding different antenna configurations. …
This paper considers a $K$-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel (IC) where 1) the channel state information obtained by the transmitters (CSIT) is completely outdated, and 2) the number of transmit antennas at each transmitter, i.e., $M$, is greater than the number of receive antennas at each user, i.e., $N$. The usefulness of the delayed CSIT was firstly identified in a $K$-phase Retrospective Interference Alignment (RIA) scheme proposed by Maddah-Ali et al for the Multiple-Input-Single-Output Broadcast Channel, but the extension to the MIMO IC is a non-trivial step…
The degrees of freedom (DoF) regions are characterized for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC), interference channels (IC) (including X and multi-hop interference channels) and the cognitive radio channel (CRC), when there is perfect and no channel state information at the receivers and the transmitter(s) (CSIR and CSIT), respectively. For the K-user MIMO BC, the exact characterization of the DoF region is obtained, which shows that a simple time-division-based transmission scheme is DoF-region optimal. Using the techniques developed for the MIMO BC, the correspond…
In this paper, we consider secure transmissions in ergodic Rayleigh fast-faded multiple-input multiple-output multiple-antenna-eavesdropper (MIMOME) wiretap channels with only statistical channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). When the legitimate receiver has more (or equal) antennas than the eavesdropper, we prove the first MIMOME secrecy capacity with partial CSIT by establishing a new secrecy capacity upper-bound. The key step is to form an MIMOME degraded channel by dividing the legitimate receiver's channel matrix into two submatrices, and setting one of the submatrices to b…
In this paper, we consider a $n_t\times n_r$ multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel subjected to block fading. Reliability (in terms of achieved diversity order) and rate (in number of symbols transmitted per channel use) are of interest in such channels. We propose a new precoding scheme which achieves both full diversity ($n_tn_r$th order diversity) as well as full rate ($n_t$ symbols per channel use) using partial channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), applicable in MIMO systems including $n_r<n_t$ asymmetric MIMO. The proposed scheme achieves full diversity and improve…
Generalized Degrees of Freedom (GDoF) are characterized for the symmetric $K$-user Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) Interference Channel (IC) under the assumption that the channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT) is limited to finite precision. In this symmetric setting, each transmitter is equipped with $M$ antennas, each receiver is equipped with $N$ antennas, each desired channel (i.e., a channel between a transmit antenna and a receive antenna belonging to the same user) has strength $\sim P$, while each undesired channel has strength $\sim P^α$, where $P$ is a nominal SNR…
