This work considers the multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC), where a transmitter with M antennas transmits information to K single-antenna users, and where - as expected - the quality and timeliness of channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is imperfect. Motivated by the fundamental question of how much feedback is necessary to achieve a certain performance, this work seeks to establish bounds on the tradeoff between degrees-of-freedom (DoF) performance and CSIT feedback quality. Specifically, this work provides a novel DoF region outer bound for the general K-user MISO BC with partial current CSIT, which naturally bridges the gap between the case of having no current CSIT (only delayed CSIT, or no CSIT) and the case with full CSIT. The work then characterizes the minimum CSIT feedback that is necessary for any point of the sum DoF, which is optimal for the case with M >= K, and the case with M=2, K=3.
An outer bound for the degrees of freedom (DoF) region of the K-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) is developed under the hybrid channel state information at transmitter (CSIT) model, in which the transmitter has instantaneous CSIT of channels to a subset of the receivers and delayed CSIT of channels to the rest of the receivers. For the 3-user MISO BC, when the transmitter has instantaneous CSIT of the channel to one receiver and delayed CSIT of channels to the other two, two new communication schemes are designed, which are able to achieve the DoF tuple of $\left…
Channel state information at the transmitter affects the degrees of freedom of the wireless networks. In this paper, we analyze the DoF for the K-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) with synergistic alternating channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). Specifically, the CSIT of each user alternates between three states, namely, perfect CSIT (P), delayed CSIT (D) and no CSIT (N) among different time slots. For the K-user MISO BC, we show that the total achievable degrees of freedom (DoF) are given by $\frac{K^{2}}{2K-1}$ through utilizing the synergistic b…
We consider a multiple-input-single-output (MISO) broadcast channel with mixed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) that consists of imperfect current CSIT and perfect outdated CSIT. Recent work by Kobayashi et al. presented a scheme which exploits both imperfect current CSIT and perfect outdated CSIT and achieves higher degrees of freedom (DoF) than possible with only imperfect current CSIT or only outdated CSIT individually. In this work, we further improve the achievable DoF in this setting by incorporating additional private messages, and provide a tight information theoreti…
The impact of imperfect CSIT on the degrees of freedom (DoF) of a time correlated MISO Broadcast Channel has drawn a lot of attention recently. Maddah-Ali and Tse have shown that the completely stale CSIT still benefit the DoF. In very recent works, Yang et al. have extended the results by integrating the partial current CSIT for a two-user MISO broadcast channel. However, those researches so far focused on a symmetric case. In this contribution, we investigate a more general case where the transmitter has knowledge of current CSI of both users with unequal qualities. The essential ingredient …
The 3-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) with hybrid channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is considered. In this framework, there is perfect and instantaneous CSIT from a subset of users and delayed CSIT from the remaining users. We present new results on the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the 3-user MISO BC with hybrid CSIT. In particular, for the case of 2 transmit antennas, we show that with perfect CSIT from one user and delayed CSIT from the remaining two users, the optimal DoF is 5/3. For the case of 3 transmit antennas and the same hybrid CSIT se…
We study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of a $K$-user parallel MISO broadcast channel with arbitrary levels of partial CSIT over each subchannel. We derive a sum-DoF upperbound which depends on the average CSIT quality of each user. This upperbound is shown to be tight under total order, i.e. when the order of users with respect to their CSIT qualities is preserved over all subchannels. In this case, it is shown that separate coding over each subchannel is optimum in a sum-DoF sense.
This paper considers a K-user Multiple-Input-Single-Output (MISO) Interference Channel (IC), where the channel state information obtained by the transmitters (CSIT) is perfect, but completely outdated. A Retrospective Interference Alignment (RIA) using such delayed CSIT was proposed by the authors of [1] for the MISO Broadcast Channel (BC), but the extension to the MISO IC is a non-trivial step as each transmitter only has the message intended for the corresponding user. Recently, [7] focused on a Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) IC and solved such bottleneck by inventing a distributed higher…
A required feature for the next generation of wireless communication networks will be the capability to serve simultaneously a large number of devices with heterogeneous CSIT qualities and demands. In this paper, we consider the overloaded MISO BC with two groups of CSIT qualities. We propose a transmission scheme where degraded symbols are superimposed on top of spatially-multiplexed symbols. The developed strategy allows to serve all users in a non-orthogonal manner and the analysis shows an enhanced perfomance compared to existing schemes. Moreover, optimality in a DoF sense is shown.
We study the impact of heterogeneity of channel-state-information available at the transmitters (CSIT) on the capacity of broadcast channels with a multiple-antenna transmitter and $k$ single-antenna receivers (MISO BC). In particular, we consider the $k$-user MISO BC, where the CSIT with respect to each receiver can be either instantaneous/perfect, delayed, or not available; and we study the impact of this heterogeneity of CSIT on the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) of such network. We first focus on the $3$-user MISO BC; and we completely characterize the DoF region for all possible heterogeneous C…
This contribution investigates the Degrees-of-Freedom region of a two-user frequency correlated Multiple-Input-Single-Output (MISO) Broadcast Channel (BC) with imperfect Channel State Information at the transmitter (CSIT). We assume that the system consists of an arbitrary number of subbands, denoted as $L$. Besides, the CSIT state varies across users and subbands. A tight outer-bound is found as a function of the minimum average CSIT quality between the two users. Based on the CSIT states across the subbands, the DoF region is interpreted as a weighted sum of the optimal DoF regions in the sc…
Channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is a key ingredient in realizing the multiplexing gain provided by distributed MIMO systems. For a downlink multiple-input single output (MISO) broadcast channel, with M antennas at the transmitters and K single antenna receivers, the maximum multiplexing gain or the maximum degrees of freedom (DoF) is min(M,K). The optimal DoF of min(M,K) is achievable if the transmitter has access to perfect, instantaneous CSIT from all receivers. In this paper, we pose the question that what is minimum amount of CSIT required per user in order to achieve t…
This work analyses the Generalized Degrees-of-Freedom (GDoF) of the 2-User Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) Broadcast Channel (BC) in the so-called Distributed CSIT regime, with application to decentralized wireless networks. This regime differs from the classical limited CSIT one in that the CSIT is not just noisy but also imperfectly shared across the transmitters (TXs). Hence, each TX precodes data on the basis of local CSIT and statistical quality information at other TXs. We derive the GDoF result and obtain the surprising outcome that by specific accounting of the pathloss information…
For the $K=2$ user MISO BC, i.e., the wireless broadcast channel where a transmitter equipped with $K=2$ antennas sends independent messages to $K=2$ receivers each of which is equipped with a single antenna, the sum generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) are characterized for arbitrary channel strength and channel uncertainty levels for each of the channel coefficients. The result is extended to $K>2$ users under additional restrictions which include the assumption of symmetry.
The work considers the two-user MISO broadcast channel with gradual and delayed accumulation of channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), and addresses the question of how much feedback is necessary, and when, in order to achieve a certain degrees-of-freedom (DoF) performance. Motivated by limited-capacity feedback links that may not immediately convey perfect CSIT, and focusing on the block fading scenario, we consider a progressively increasing CSIT quality as time progresses across the coherence period (T channel uses - evolving current CSIT), or at any time after (delayed CSIT).…
We consider the $K$-User Multiple-Input-Single-Output (MISO) Broadcast Channel (BC) where the transmitter, equipped with $M$ antennas, serves $K$ users, with $K \leq M$. The transmitter has access to a partial channel state information of the users. This is modelled by letting the variance of the Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) error of user $i$ scale as $O(P^{-α_i}$) for the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) $P$ and some constant $α_i \geq 0$. In this work we derive the optimal Degrees-of-Freedom (DoF) region in such setting and we show that Rate-Splitting (RS) is the key scheme…
We consider a $K$-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) where the channel state information (CSI) of user $i(i=1,2,\ldots,K)$ may be either perfect (P), delayed (D) or not known (N) at the transmitter with probabilities $λ_P^i$, $λ_D^i$ and $λ_N^i$, respectively. In this channel, according to the three possible CSIT for each user, joint CSIT of the $K$ users could have at most $3^K$ realizations. Although the results by Tandon et al. show that the Degrees of Freedom (DoF) region for the two user MISO BC with symmetric marginal probabilities (i.e., $λ_Q^i=λ_Q \forall i…
We consider the time correlated MISO broadcast channel where the transmitter has partial knowledge on the current channel state, in addition to delayed channel state information (CSI). Rather than exploiting only the current CSI, as the zero-forcing precoding, or only the delayed CSI, as the Maddah-Ali-Tse (MAT) scheme, we propose a seamless strategy that takes advantage of both. The achievable degrees of freedom of the proposed scheme is characterized in terms of the quality of the current channel knowledge.
Since Maddah-Ali and Tse showed that the completely stale transmitter-side channel state information (CSIT) still benefits the Degrees of Freedom (DoF) of the Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MISO) Broadcast Channel (BC), there has been much interest in the academic literature to investigate the impact of imperfect CSIT on \emph{DoF} region of time correlated broadcast channel. Even though the research focus has been on time correlated channels so far, a similar but different problem concerns the frequency correlated channels. Indeed, the imperfect CSIT also impacts the DoF region of frequency …
We consider a $K$-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) where the channel state information (CSI) of user $i(i=1,2,\ldots,K)$ may be either instantaneously perfect (P), delayed (D) or not known (N) at the transmitter with probabilities $λ_P^i$, $λ_D^i$ and $λ_N^i$, respectively. In this setting, according to the three possible CSIT for each user, knowledge of the joint CSIT of the $K$ users could have at most $3^K$ states. Although the results by Tandon et al. show that for the symmetric two user MISO BC (i.e., $λ_Q^i=λ_Q,\ \forall i\in \{1,2\}, Q\in \{P,D,N\}$), the …
In the setting of the two-user broadcast channel, recent work by Maddah-Ali and Tse has shown that knowledge of prior channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) can be useful, even in the absence of any knowledge of current CSIT. Very recent work by Kobayashi et al., Yang et al., and Gou and Jafar, extended this to the case where, instead of no current CSIT knowledge, the transmitter has partial knowledge, and where under a symmetry assumption, the quality of this knowledge is identical for the different users' channels. Motivated by the fact that in multiuser settings, the quality of…
Studies of the MISO Broadcast Channel (BC) with delayed Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) have so far focused on the sum-rate and Degrees-of-Freedom (DoF) region analysis. In this paper, we investigate for the first time the error rate performance at finite SNR and the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) at infinite SNR of a space-time encoded transmission over a two-user MISO BC with delayed CSIT. We consider the so-called MAT protocol obtained by Maddah-Ali and Tse, which was shown to provide 33% DoF enhancement over TDMA. While the asymptotic DMT analysis shows that MAT …
Recently, the Degrees-of-Freedom (DoF) region of multiple-input-single-output (MISO) networks with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) has attracted significant attentions. An achievable scheme is known as rate-splitting (RS) that integrates common-message-multicasting and private-message-unicasting. In this paper, focusing on the general $K$-cell MISO IC where the CSIT of each interference link has an arbitrary quality of imperfectness, we firstly identify the DoF region achieved by RS. Secondly, we introduce a novel scheme, so called Topological RS (TRS), whose nove…
In the setting of the time-selective two-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC), recent work by Tandon et al. considered the case where - in the presence of error-free delayed channel state information at the transmitter (delayed CSIT) - the current CSIT for the channel of user 1 and of user 2, alternate between the two extreme states of perfect current CSIT and of no current CSIT. Motivated by the problem of having limited-capacity feedback links which may not allow for perfect CSIT, as well as by the need to utilize any available partial CSIT, we here deviate from th…
This paper considers the Sum-Rate (SR) maximization problem in downlink MU-MISO systems under imperfect Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT). Contrary to existing works, we consider a rather unorthodox transmission scheme. In particular, the message intended to one of the users is split into two parts: a common part which can be recovered by all users, and a private part recovered by the corresponding user. On the other hand, the rest of users receive their information through private messages. This Rate-Splitting (RS) approach was shown to boost the achievable Degrees of Freedo…
This paper focuses on linear beamforming design and power allocation strategy for ergodic rate optimization in a two-user Multiple-Input-Single-Output (MISO) system with statistical and delayed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). We propose a transmission strategy, denoted as Statistical Alternative MAT (SAMAT), which exploits both channel statistics and delayed CSIT. Firstly, with statistical CSIT only, we focus on statistical beamforming (SBF) design that maximizes a lower bound on the ergodic sum-rate. Secondly, relying on both statistical and delayed CSIT, an iterative alg…
We provide a fresh perspective on the problem of characterizing the DoF region of the $K$-user MISO BC with arbitrary levels of partial CSIT. In a previous achievability proof, Piovano and Clerckx characterized all faces describing a polyhedral outer bound region, and then with the aid of mathematical induction, prescribed a scheme based on rate-splitting with flexible assignment of common DoF and power levels to achieve each such face. We propose an alternative approach in which we deal directly with the region achievable through rate-splitting and employ a Fourier-Motzkin procedure to elimin…
The degrees of freedom (DoF) of the two-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) are studied under the assumption that the form, I_i, i=1,2, of the channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) for each user's channel can be either perfect (P), delayed (D) or not available (N), i.e., I_1 and I_2 can take values of either P, D or N, and therefore the overall CSIT can alternate between the 9 resulting states, each state denoted as I_1I_2. The fraction of time associated with CSIT state I_1I_2 is denoted by the parameter λ_{I_1I_2} and it is assumed throughout that λ_…
This work investigates the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the K-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) interference channel (IC) with imperfect delayed channel state information at the transmitters (dCSIT). For this setting, new DoF inner bonds are provided, and benchmarked with cooperation-based outer bounds. The achievability result is based on a precoding scheme that aligns the interfering received signals through time, exploiting the concept of Retrospective Interference Alignment (RIA). The proposed approach outperforms all previous known schemes. Furthermore, we study the proposed scheme …
We consider the time correlated multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel where the transmitter has imperfect knowledge on the current channel state, in addition to delayed channel state information. By representing the quality of the current channel state information as P^-α for the signal-to-noise ratio P and some constant α \geq 0, we characterize the optimal degree of freedom region for this more general two-user MISO broadcast correlated channel. The essential ingredients of the proposed scheme lie in the quantization and multicasting of the overheard interferences, while broa…
We study the problem of secure transmission over a Gaussian two-user multi-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel under the assumption that links connecting the transmitter to the two receivers may have unequal strength statistically. In addition to this, the state of the channel to each receiver is conveyed in a strictly causal manner to the transmitter. We focus on a two state topological setting of strong v.s. weak links. Under these assumptions, we first consider the MISO wiretap channel and establish bounds on generalized secure degrees of freedom (GSDoF). Next, we extend this model…
We consider the cache-aided MISO broadcast channel (BC) in which a multi-antenna transmitter serves $K$ single-antenna receivers, each equipped with a cache memory. The transmitter has access to partial knowledge of the channel state information. For a symmetric setting, in terms of channel strength levels, partial channel knowledge levels and cache sizes, we characterize the generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) up to a constant multiplicative factor. The achievability scheme exploits the interplay between spatial multiplexing gains and coded-multicasting gain. On the other hand, a cut-set-ba…
We address the max-min fairness design problem for a MU-MISO system with partial Channel State Information (CSI) at the Base Station (BS), consisting of an imperfect channel estimate and statistical knowledge of the estimation error, and perfect CSI at the receivers. The objective is to maximize the minimum Average Rate (AR) among users subject to a transmit power constraint. An unconventional transmission scheme is adopted where the Base Station (BS) transmits a common message in addition to the conventional private messages. In situations where the CSIT is not accurate enough to perform inte…
In this paper, we consider a MU-MISO system where users have highly accurate Channel State Information (CSI), while the Base Station (BS) has partial CSI consisting of an imperfect channel estimate and statistical knowledge of the CSI error. With the objective of maximizing the Average Sum Rate (ASR) subject to a power constraint, a special transmission scheme is considered where the BS transmits a common symbol in a multicast fashion, in addition to the conventional private symbols. This scheme is termed Joint Multicasting and Broadcasting (JMB). The ASR problem is transformed into an augment…
In this paper, we consider the design of robust linear precoders for MU-MISO systems where users have perfect Channel State Information (CSI) while the BS has partial CSI. In particular, the BS has access to imperfect estimates of the channel vectors, in addition to the covariance matrices of the estimation error vectors. A closed-form expression for the Average Minimum Mean Square Error (AMMSE) is obtained using the second order Taylor Expansion. This approximation is used to formulate two fairness-based robust design problems: a maximum AMMSE-constrained problem and a power-constrained probl…
In this paper, the sum secure degrees of freedom (SDoF) of the $K$-user Multiple Input/Single Output (MISO) Broadcast Channel with Confidential Messages (BCCM) and alternating Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) is investigated. In the MISO BCCM, a $K$-antenna transmitter (TX) communicates toward $K$ single-antenna receivers (RXs), so that message for RX $k$ is kept secret from RX $j$ with $j<k$. For this model, we consider the scenario in which the CSI of the RXs from $2$ to $K$ is instantaneously known at the transmitter while CSI of RX $1$ is known at the transmitter (i) ins…
The two user multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel with confidential messages (BCCM) is studied in which the nature of channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) from each user can be of the form $I_{i}$, $i=1,2$ where $I_{1}, I_{2}\in \{\mathsf{P}, \mathsf{D}, \mathsf{N}\}$, and the forms $\mathsf{P}$, $\mathsf{D}$ and $\mathsf{N}$ correspond to perfect and instantaneous, completely delayed, and no CSIT, respectively. Thus, the overall CSIT can alternate between $9$ possible states corresponding to all possible values of $I_{1}I_{2}$, with each state occurring for $λ_…
We study the $K=3$ user multiple input single output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) with $M=3$ antennas at the transmitter and $1$ antenna at each receiver, from the generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) perspective, under the assumption that the channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is limited to finite precision. In particular, our goal is to identify a parameter regime where a simple layered superposition (SLS) coding scheme achieves the entire GDoF region. With $α_{ij}$ representing the channel strength parameter for the link from the $j^{th}$ antenna of the transmitter to the…
In this contribution, we focus on a frequency domain two-user Multiple-Input-Single-Output Broadcast Channel (MISO BC) where the transmitter has imperfect and (un)matched Channel State Information (CSI) of the two users in two subbands. We provide an upper-bound to the Degrees-of-Freedom (DoF) region, which is tight compared to the state of the art. By decomposing the subbands into subchannels according to the CSI feedback qualities, we interpret the DoF region as the weighted-sum of that in each subchannel. Moreover, we study the sum \emph{DoF} loss when employing sub-optimal schemes, namely …
Recent information theoretic results suggest that precoding on the multi-user downlink MIMO channel with delayed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) could lead to data rates much beyond the ones obtained without any CSIT, even in extreme situations when the delayed channel feedback is made totally obsolete by a feedback delay exceeding the channel coherence time. This surprising result is based on the ideas of interference repetition and alignment which allow the receivers to reconstruct information symbols which canceling out the interference completely, making it an optimal s…
The Maddah-Ali and Tse (MAT) scheme is a linear precoding strategy that exploits Interference Alignment and perfect, but delayed, channel state information at the transmitters (delayed CSIT), improving the degrees of freedom (DoF) that can be achieved for the broadcast channel (BC). Since its appearance, many works have extended the concept of Retrospective Interference Alignment (RIA) to other multi-user channel configurations. However, little is known about the broadcast channel with multiple cells, i.e. the interference broadcast channel (IBC). In this work, the DoF are studied for the $K$-…
This work explores coded caching in the symmetric $K$-user cache-aided MISO BC with imperfect CSIT-type feedback, for the specific case where the cache size is much smaller than the library size. Building on the recently explored synergy between caching and delayed-CSIT, and building on the tradeoff between caching and CSIT quality, the work proposes new schemes that boost the impact of small caches, focusing on the case where the cumulative cache size is smaller than the library size. For this small-cache setting, based on the proposed near-optimal schemes, the work identifies the optimal cac…
In the setting of the two-user broadcast channel, where a two-antenna transmitter communicates information to two single-antenna receivers, recent work by Maddah-Ali and Tse has shown that perfect knowledge of delayed channel state information at the transmitter (perfect delayed CSIT) can be useful, even in the absence of any knowledge of current CSIT. Similar benefits of perfect delayed CSIT were revealed in recent work by Kobayashi et al., Yang et al., and Gou and Jafar, which extended the above to the case of perfect delayed CSIT and imperfect current CSIT. The work here considers the gener…
For the two-user MISO broadcast channel with imperfect and delayed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), the work explores the tradeoff between performance on the one hand, and CSIT timeliness and accuracy on the other hand. The work considers a broad setting where communication takes place in the presence of a random fading process, and in the presence of a feedback process that, at any point in time, may provide CSIT estimates - of some arbitrary accuracy - for any past, current or future channel realization. This feedback quality may fluctuate in time across all ranges of CSI…
We study the $K$-user, $M$-subchannel parallel multiple-input-single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) under arbitrary levels of partial channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). We show that the parallel subchannels constituting this setting are separable from a degrees-of-freedom (DoF) region perspective if and only if the partial CSIT pattern is totally ordered. This total order condition corresponds to users abiding by the same order, with respect to their CSIT quality levels, in each of the parallel subchannels. For instance, let $α_{k}^{[l]}$ and $α_{j}^{[l]}$ be the CSIT q…
A rate splitting based scheme is proposed to operate a broadcast setting with two antennas at the transmit side and two single-antenna receiving terminals. The transmitter knows the magnitude of the channel coefficients, and it is oblivious to the phase information. Each transmit antenna, with a power constraint, sends a private message and a common message to be decoded by both receivers. An achievable rate region is obtained, which enlarges the capacity region of the vector broadcast channel with vector channel magnitude feedback by means of superposition coding.
The channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) play an important role in the performance of wireless networks. The CSIT model can be delayed and imperfect-quality, since the feedback link has a delay and the channel state information (CSI) feedback has distortion. In this paper, we thus characterize the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) region of the two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel with delayed imperfect-quality CSIT, where the antenna configurations can be arbitrary. The converse proof of DoF region is based on the enhancement of physically degraded channel. T…
Rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) has appeared as a powerful transmission and multiple access strategy for multi-user multi-antenna communications. Uniquely, this paper studies the optimization of the sum-rate of RSMA with imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter (CSIT) and the receivers (CSIR). The robustness of the RSMA approach against imperfect CSIT has been investigated in the previous studies while there has been no consideration for the effects of imperfect CSIR. This motivates us to develop a robust design relying on RSMA in the presence of both imperfect CSIT a…
We consider a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) block-fading channel with a general model for channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). The model covers systems with causal CSIT, where only CSIT of past fading blocks is available, and predictive CSIT, where CSIT of some future fading blocks is available. The optimal diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) and rate-diversity tradeoff (RDT) of the channel are studied under long-term power constraints. The impact of imperfect (mismatched) CSIT on the optimal DMT and RDT is also investigated. Our results show the outage diversity gain obtai…
One of the famous problems in communications was the so-called "PN" problem in the Broadcast Channel, which refers to the setting where a fixed set of users provide perfect Channel State Information (CSI) to a multi-antenna transmitter, whereas the remaining users only provide finite-precision CSI or no CSI. The Degrees-of-Freedom (DoF) of that setting were recently derived by means of the Aligned Image Set approach. In this work, we resolve the cache-aided variant of this problem (i.e., the "PN" setting with side information) in the regime where the number of users providing perfect CSI is sm…
This work investigates the interplay of coded caching and spatial multiplexing in an overloaded Multiple-Input-Single-Output (MISO) Broadcast Channel (BC), i.e. a system where the number of users is greater than the number of transmitting antennas. On one hand, coded caching uses the aggregate global cache memory of the users to create multicasting opportunities. On the other hand, multiple antennas at the transmitter leverage the available CSIT to transmit multiple streams simultaneously. In this paper, we introduce a novel scheme which combines both the gain derived from coded-caching and sp…
This paper addresses the performance of bit-interleaved coded multiple beamforming (BICMB) [1], [2] with imperfect knowledge of beamforming vectors. Most studies for limited-rate channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) assume that the precoding matrix has an invariance property under an arbitrary unitary transform. In BICMB, this property does not hold. On the other hand, the optimum precoder and detector for BICMB are invariant under a diagonal unitary transform. In order to design a limited-rate CSIT system for BICMB, we propose a new distortion measure optimum under this invaria…
In this paper, we analyze the fundamental tradeoff of diversity and multiplexing in multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channels with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). We show that with imperfect CSIT, a higher diversity gain as well as a more efficient diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) can be achieved. In the case of multi-input single-output (MISO)/single-input multi-output (SIMO) channels with K transmit/receive antennas, one can achieve a diversity gain of d(r)=K(1-r+Kα) at spatial multiplexing gain r, where αis the CSIT quality defined in this paper. For gener…
We consider downlink max-based scheduling in which the base station and each user are equipped with a single antenna. In each time slot, the base station obtains channel gains of all users and selects the user with the largest squared channel gain. Assuming that channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), i.e., squared channel gain, can be inaccurate, we derive lower bounds for probability of outage, which occurs when a required data rate is not satisfied under a delay constraint. The bounds are tight for Rayleigh fading and show how required rate and CSIT error affect outage performa…
Jamming attacks can significantly impact the performance of wireless communication systems. In addition to reducing the capacity, such attacks may lead to insurmountable overhead in terms of re-transmissions and increased power consumption. In this paper, we consider the multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) in the presence of a jamming attack in which a subset of the receivers can be jammed at any given time. Further, countermeasures for mitigating the effects of such jamming attacks are presented. The effectiveness of these anti-jamming countermeasures is quantified in t…
We investigate the effect of feedback delay on the outage probability of multiple-input single-output (MISO) fading channels. Channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is a delayed version of the channel state information available at the receiver (CSIR). We consider two cases of CSIR: (a) perfect CSIR and (b) CSI estimated at the receiver using training symbols. With perfect CSIR, under a short-term power constraint, we determine: (a) the outage probability for beamforming with imperfect CSIT (BF-IC) analytically, and (b) the optimal spatial power allocation (OSPA) scheme that minim…
In this paper, we study the achievable degrees-of-freedom (DoF) regions of the $K$-user multiple-input-single-output (MISO) time correlated broadcast channel (BC). The time correlation induces knowledge of the current channel state information at transmitter (CSIT) with an estimation error $P^{-α}$, where $P$ is the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We consider the following two scenarios: $(i)$ $K$-user with $K$-antenna base station (BS) and $(ii)$ $3$-user with $2$-antenna BS. In case of symmetric DoF tuples, where all the users obtain the same DoF, we derive the total DoF equal to $\frac{K(1-α)}…
To enhance the multiplexing gain of two-receiver Multiple-Input-Single-Output Broadcast Channel with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), a class of Rate-Splitting (RS) approaches has been proposed recently, which divides one receiver's message into a common and a private part, and superposes the common message on top of Zero-Forcing precoded private messages. In this paper, with quantized CSIT, we study the ergodic sum rate of two schemes, namely RS-S and RS-ST, where the common message(s) are transmitted via a space and space-time design, respectively. Firstly, we u…
A Dirty Paper Coding (DPC) based transmission scheme for the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio channel (CRC) is studied when there is imperfect and perfect channel knowledge at the transmitters (CSIT) and the receivers, respectively. In particular, the problem of optimizing the sum-rate of the MIMO CRC over the transmit covariance matrices is dealt with. Such an optimization, under the DPC-based transmission strategy, needs to be performed jointly with an optimization over the inflation factor. To this end, first the problem of determination of inflation factor ove…
