The Kitaev model is a remarkable spin model with gapped and gapless spin liquid phases, which are potentially realized in iridates and $α$-RuCl$_3$. In the recent experiment of $α$-RuCl$_3$, the signature of a nematic transition to the gapped toric code phase, which breaks the $C_3$ symmetry of the system, has been observed through the angle dependence of the heat capacity. We here propose a mechanism by which the nematic transition can be detected electrically. This is seemingly impossible because $J_\textrm{eff}=1/2$ spins do not have an electric quadrupole moment (EQM). However, in the second-order perturbation the virtual state with a nonzero EQM appears, which makes the nematic order parameter detectable by nuclear magnetic resonance and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The purely magnetic origin of EQM is different from conventional electronic nematic phases, allowing the direct detection of the realization of Kitaev's toric error-correction code.
The honeycomb lattice Kitaev model H_{K} with two kinds of Wen-Toric-code four-body interactions H_{WT} is investigated exactly using a new fermionization method, and the ground state phase diagram is obtained. Six kinds of three-body interactions are also considered. A Hamiltonian equivalent to the honeycomb lattice Kitaev model is also introduced. The fermionization method is generalized to two-dimensional systems, and the two-dimensional Jordan-Wigner transformation is obtained as a special case of this formula. The model H_{K}+H_{WT} is symmetric in four-dimensional space of coupling const…
Kitaev's toric code is an exactly solvable model with $\mathbb{Z}_2$-topological order, which has potential applications in quantum computation and error correction. However, a direct experimental realization remains an open challenge. Here, we propose a building block for $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theories coupled to dynamical matter and demonstrate how it allows for an implementation of the toric-code ground state and its topological excitations. This is achieved by introducing separate matter excitations on individual plaquettes, whose motion induce the required plaquette terms. The prop…
It is well-known that the partition function of a classical spin model can be mapped to a quantum entangled state where some properties on one side can be used to find new properties on the other side. However, the consequences of the existence of a classical (critical) phase transition on the corresponding quantum state has been mostly ignored. This is particularly interesting since the classical partition function exhibits non-analytic behavior at the critical point and such behavior could have important consequences on the quantum side. In this paper, we consider this problem for an importa…
We propose a scenario of realizing the toric code phase, which can be potentially utilized for fault-tolerant quantum computation, in candidate materials of Kitaev magnets. It is demonstrated that four-body interactions among Majorana fermions in the Kitaev spin liquid state, which are induced by applied magnetic fields as well as non-Kitaev-type exchange interactions, trigger a nematic phase transition of Majorana bonds without magnetic orders, accompanying the change of the Chern number from $\pm 1$ to zero. This gapful spin liquid state with zero Chern number is nothing but the toric code p…
We present a solution of Kitaev's spin model on the honeycomb lattice and of related topologically ordered spin models. We employ a Jordan-Wigner type fermionization and find that the Hamiltonian takes a BCS type form, allowing the system to be solved by Bogoliubov transformation. Our fermionization does not employ non-physical auxiliary degrees of freedom and the eigenstates we obtain are completely explicit in terms of the spin variables. The ground-state is obtained as a BCS condensate of fermion pairs over a vacuum state which corresponds to the toric code state with the same vorticity. We…
The Kitaev honeycomb model is an approximate topological quantum error correcting code in the same phase as the toric code, but requiring only a 2-body Hamiltonian. As a frustrated spin model, it is well outside the commuting models of topological quantum codes that are typically studied, but its exact solubility makes it more amenable to analysis of effects arising in this noncommutative setting than a generic topologically ordered Hamiltonian. Here we study quantum error correction in the honeycomb model using both analytic and numerical techniques. We first prove explicit exponential bounds…

We study Hamiltonians which have Kitaev's toric code as a ground state, and show how to construct a Hamiltonian which shares the ground space of the toric code, but which has gapless excitations with a continuous spectrum in the thermodynamic limit. Our construction is based on the framework of Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS), and can be applied to a large class of two-dimensional systems to obtain gapless "uncle Hamiltonians".

We apply the SU(2) slave fermion formalism to the Kitaev honeycomb lattice model. We show that both the Toric Code phase (the A phase) and the gapless phase of this model (the B phase) can be identified with p-wave superconducting phases of the slave fermions, with nodal lines which, respectively, do not or do intersect the Fermi surface. The non-Abelian Ising anyon phase is a $p+ip$ superconducting phase which occurs when the B phase is subjected to a gap-opening magnetic field. We also discuss the transitions between these phases in this language.
We present a procedure to obtain the Hamiltonians of the toric code and Kitaev quantum double models as the low-energy limits of entirely two-body Hamiltonians. Our construction makes use of a new type of perturbation gadget based on error-detecting subsystem codes. The procedure is motivated by a PEPS description of the target models, and reproduces the target models' behavior using only couplings which are natural in terms of the original Hamiltonians. This allows our construction to exactly capture the symmetries of the target models.
Hamiltonian engineering is an important approach for quantum information processing, when appropriate materials do not exist in nature or are unstable. So far there is no stable material for the Kitaev spin Hamiltonian with anisotropic interactions on a honeycomb lattice (A. Kitaev, Annals of Physics vol 321, 2 (2006)), which plays a crucial role in the realization of both Abelian and non-Abelian anyons. Here, we show how to dynamically realize the Kitaev spin Hamiltonian from the conventional Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian using a pulse-control technique. By repeating the same pulse sequence, th…
We determine the phase diagram of a bilayer, Yao-Lee spin-orbital model with inter-layer interactions (J), for several stackings and moiré superlattices. For AA stacking, a gapped Z2 quantum spin liquid phase emerges at a finite Jc. We show that this phase survives in the well-controlled large-J limit, where an isotropic honeycomb toric code emerges. For moiré superlattices, a finite-q inter-layer hybridization is stabilized. This connects inequivalent Dirac points, effectively `untwisting' the system. Our study thus provides insight into the spin-liquid phases of bilayer spin-orbital Kitaev m…

The Z_2 topological order in Z_2 spin liquid and in exactly soluble Kitaev toric code model is the simplest topological order for 2+1D bosonic systems. More general 2+1D bosonic topologically ordered states can be constructed via exact soluble string-net models. However, the most important topologically ordered phases of matter are arguably the fermionic fractional quantum Hall states. Topological phases of matter for fermion systems are strictly richer than their bosonic counterparts because locality has different meanings for the two kinds of systems. In this paper, we describe a simple ferm…
We study low-energy properties of spin-$S$ Kitaev models in an anisotropic limit. The effective form of a local conserved quantity is derived in the low-energy subspace. We find this is the same as that of $S=1/2$ case for the half-integer spins but shows a different form for the integer spins. Applying the perturbation theory to the anisotropic Kitaev model, we obtain the effective Hamiltonian. In the integer spin case, the effective model is equivalent to a free spin model under an uniform magnetic field, where quantum fluctuations are quenched. On the other hand, in the half-integer case, t…
We define and study parafermion stabilizer codes which can be viewed as generalizations of Kitaev's one dimensional model of unpaired Majorana fermions. Parafermion stabilizer codes can protect against low-weight errors acting on a small subset of parafermion modes in analogy to qudit stabilizer codes. Examples of several smallest parafermion stabilizer codes are given. A locality preserving embedding of qudit operators into parafermion operators is established which allows one to map known qudit stabilizer codes to parafermion codes. We also present a local 2D parafermion construction that co…

We compute the error threshold for the semion code, the companion of the Kitaev toric code with the same gauge symmetry group $\mathbb{Z}_2$. The application of statistical mechanical mapping methods is highly discouraged for the semion code, since the code is non-Pauli and non-CSS. Thus, we use machine learning methods, taking advantage of the near-optimal performance of some neural network decoders: multilayer perceptrons and convolutional neural networks (CNNs). We find the values $p_{\text {eff}}=9.5\%$ for uncorrelated bit-flip and phase-flip noise, and $p_{\text {eff}}=10.5\%$ for depola…
We introduce a two-parameter family of perturbations of Kitaev's Toric Code Model in which the anyonic excitations acquire an interesting dynamics. We study the dynamics of this model in the space of states with electric and magnetic charge both equal to 1 and find that the model exhibits both bound states and scattering states in a suitable region of the parameters. The bound state is a Majorana fermion with a dispersion relation of Dirac cone type. For a certain range of model parameters, we find that these bound states disappear in a continuum of scattering states at a critical value of the…
We study the Kitaev-Heisenberg-$Γ$ model with antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchanges in the strong anisotropic (toric code) limit to understand the phases and the intervening phase transitions between the gapped $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid and the spin-ordered (in the Heisenberg limit) as well as paramagnetic phases (in the pseudo-dipolar, $Γ$, limit). We find that the paramagnetic phase obtained in the large $Γ$ limit has no topological entanglement entropy and is proximate to a gapless critical point of a system described by an equal superposition of differently oriented stacked one-dimensional $Z…
The fate of exotic spin liquid states with fractionalized excitations at finite temperature ($T$) is of great interest, since signatures of fractionalization manifest in finite-temperature ($T$) dynamics in real systems, above the tiny magnetic ordering scales. Here, we study a Jordan-Wigner fermionized Kitaev spin liquid at finite $T$ employing combined Exact diagonalization and Monte Carlo simulation methods. We uncover $(i)$ checkerboard or stripy-ordered flux crystals depending on density of flux, and $(ii)$ establish, surprisingly, that: $(a)$ the finite-$T$ version of the $T=0$ transitio…
We introduce a two-dimensional electronic insulator that possesses a toric code topological order enriched by translation symmetry. This state can be realized from disordering a weak topological superconductor by double-vortex condensation. It is termed the toric code insulator, whose anyonic excitations consist of a charge-$e$ chargon, a neutral fermion and two types of visons. There are two types of visons because they have constrained motion as a consequence of the fractional Josephson effect of one-dimensional topological superconductor. Importantly, these two types of visons are related b…
We propose a coupled-layer construction of a class of fracton topological orders in three spatial dimensions, which is characterized by spatially anisotropic mobility of quasiparticle excitations constrained in subdimensional manifolds. The simplest model is obtained by stacking and coupling layers of the two-dimensional toric codes on the square lattice and can be exactly solved in the strong-coupling limit. The resulting fracton excitations are understood as a consequence of anyon pair condensation induced by the coupling between layers. We also present generalizations of the construction fo…

The exploration of quantum spin liquids (QSLs) has been guided by different approaches including the resonating valence bond (RVB) picture, deconfined lattice gauge theories and the Kitaev model. More recently, a spin liquid ground state was numerically established on the ruby lattice, inspired by the Rydberg blockade mechanism. Here we unify these varied approaches in a single parent Hamiltonian, in which local fluctuations of anyons stabilize deconfinement. The parent Hamiltonian is defined on kagomé triangles -- each hosting four RVB-like states -- and includes only Ising interactions and s…
We present a method of extracting information about the topological order from the ground state of a strongly correlated two-dimensional system computed with the infinite projected entangled pair state (iPEPS). For topologically ordered systems, the iPEPS wrapped on a torus becomes a superposition of degenerate, locally indistinguishable ground states. Projectors in the form of infinite matrix product operators (iMPO) onto states with well-defined anyon flux are used to compute topological $S$ and $T$ matrices (encoding mutual- and self-statistics of emergent anyons). The algorithm is shown to…
We study the spin-$1/2$ ferromagnetic Heisenberg-Kitaev-$Γ$ model in the anisotropic (Toric code) limit to reveal the nature of the quantum phase transition between the gapped $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid and a spin ordered phase (driven by Heisenberg interactions) as well as a trivial paramagnet (driven by pseudo-dipolar interactions, $Γ$). The transitions are obtained by a simultaneous condensation of the Ising electric and magnetic charges-- the fractionalized excitations of the $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid. Both these transitions can be continuous and are examples of deconfined quantum critical …
We derive explicit closed-form matrix representations of Hamiltonians drawn from tensored algebras, such as quantum spin Hamiltonians. These formulas enable us to soft-code generic Hamiltonian systems and to systematize the input data for uniformly structured as well as for un-structured Hamiltonians. The result is an optimal computer code that can be used as a black box that takes in certain input files and returns spectral information about the Hamiltonian. The code is tested on Kitaev's toric code deployed on triangulated surfaces of genus 0 and 1. The input file corresponding to the minima…
We regularize compact and non-compact Abelian Chern-Simons-Maxwell theories on a spatial lattice using the Hamiltonian formulation. We consider a doubled theory with gauge fields living on a lattice and its dual lattice. The Hilbert space of the theory is a product of local Hilbert spaces, each associated with a link and the corresponding dual link. The two electric field operators associated with the link-pair do not commute. In the non-compact case with gauge group $\mathbb{R}$, each local Hilbert space is analogous to the one of a charged "particle" moving in the link-pair group space $\mat…
A number of exactly solvable spin models, including the Kitaev toric code in two and three dimensions and the X-cube model in three dimensions, can be related to their respective parent lattice gauge theories (LGT) through the mathematical process of 'Higgsing'. Field theories of the low-energy excitations of these spin models can be developed subsequently, building upon the symmetry of the parent LGTs. Recently, two of the present authors proposed a variant of the three-dimensional toric code which we now call the F3 model, whose elementary excitations consist of freeon and fluxon excitations…
Arrays of Rydberg atoms constitute a highly tunable, strongly interacting venue for the pursuit of exotic states of matter. We develop a new strategy for accessing a family of fractionalized phases known as quantum spin liquids in two-dimensional Rydberg arrays. We specifically use effective field theory methods to study arrays assembled from Rydberg chains tuned to an Ising phase transition that famously hosts emergent fermions propagating within each chain. This highly entangled starting point allows us to naturally access spin liquids familiar from Kitaev's honeycomb model, albeit from an e…
A state sum construction on closed manifolds á la Kuperberg can be used to construct the partition functions of $3D$ lattice gauge theories based on involutory Hopf algebras, $\mathcal{A}$, of which the group algebras, $\mathbb{C}G$, are a particular case. Transfer matrices can be obtained by carrying out this construction on a manifold with boundary. Various Hamiltonians of physical interest can be obtained from these transfer matrices by playing around with the parameters the transfer matrix is a function of. The $2D$ quantum double Hamiltonians of Kitaev can be obtained from such transfer m…
We examine the star lattice Kitaev model whose ground state is a a chiral spin liquid. We fermionize the model such that the fermionic vacua are toric code states on an effective Kagome lattice. This implies that the Abelian phase of the system is inherited from the fermionic vacua and that time reversal symmetry is spontaneously broken at the level of the vacuum. In terms of these fermions we derive the Bloch-matrix Hamiltonians for the vortex free sector and its time reversed counterpart and illuminate the relationships between the sectors. The phase diagram for the model is shown to be a sp…
Quantum information theory and strongly correlated electron systems share a common theme of macroscopic quantum entanglement. In both topological error correction codes and theories of quantum materials (spin liquid, heavy fermion and high-$T_c$ systems) entanglement is implemented by means of an emergent gauge symmetry. Inspired by these connections, we introduce a simple model for fermions moving in the deconfined phase of a $\mathbb Z_2$ gauge theory, by coupling Kitaev's toric code to mobile fermions. This permits us to exactly solve the ground state of this system and map out its phase di…
We present thermodynamic phase diagrams showing magnetic analog of "three states of matter," namely, spin liquid, paramagnetic, and magnetically ordered phases, obtained by unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Our simulations are carried out for Kitaev's toric codes in two and three dimensions, i.e., the simplest realizations of gapped topological $Z_2$ spin liquids, extended by a nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic Ising coupling. We find that the ordered phase borders on the spin liquid by a discontinuous transition line in three dimensions, while it grows continuously from the quantum criti…
A physical realization of self correcting quantum code would be profoundly useful for constructing a quantum computer. In this theoretical work, we provide a partial solution to major challenges preventing self correcting quantum code from being engineered in realistic devices. We consider a variant of Kitaev's toric code coupled to propagating bosons, which induce a long-ranged interaction between anyonic defects. By coupling the primary quantum system to an engineered dissipation source through resonant energy transfer, we demonstrate a "rate barrier" which leads to a potentially enormous in…

We theoretically address spin chain analogs of the Kitaev quantum spin model on the honeycomb lattice. The emergent quantum spin liquid phases or Anderson resonating valence bond (RVB) states can be understood, as an effective model, in terms of p-wave superconductivity and Majorana fermions. We derive a generalized phase diagram for the two-leg ladder system with tunable interaction strengths between chains allowing us to vary the shape of the lattice (from square to honeycomb ribbon or brickwall ladder). We evaluate the winding number associated with possible emergent (topological) gapless m…
