We propose a quartic chiral term $m_x m_y m_z \nabla \cdot \mathbf{m}$ for the energy density of a cubic ferromagnet with broken parity symmetry (point group $T_d$). We demonstrate that this interaction causes a phase transition from a collinear ferromagnetic state to a non-collinear magnetic cone ground state provided its strength exceeds the geometric mean of magnetic exchange and cubic anisotropy. The corresponding non-collinear ground state may also be additionally stabilized by an external magnetic field pointing along certain crystallographic directions. The four-spin chiral exchange does also manifest itself in peculiar magnon spectra and favors spin waves with the wave vector that is perpendicular to the average magnetization direction.
We study the magnetism of a lattice of coupled tetrahedral spin-1/2 clusters which might be of relevance to the tellurate compounds Cu2Te2O5X2, with X=Cl, Br. Using the flow equation method we perform a series expansion in terms of the inter-tetrahedral exchange couplings starting from the quadrumer limit. Results will be given for the magnetic instabilities of the quadrumer phase and the dispersion of elementary triplet excitations. In limiting cases of our model of one- or two dimensional character we show our results to be consistent with findings on previously investigated decoupled tetrah…
Magnetic properties of a completely frustrated tetrahedral chain are briefly summarized. Using exact diagonalization, and bond-operator theory results for the ground-state phase diagram, the one-triplet excitations and the Raman spectrum are given. The link to novel tellurate materials is clarified.
Raman light-scattering experiments in the antiferromagnetic phase of the Cu_2Te_2O_5(Br_(1-x)Cl_x)_2 compounds are analyzed in terms of a dimerized spin model for the tetrahedral Cu-clusters. It is shown that the longitudinal magnetic excitation in the pure Br system hybridizes with a localized singlet excitation due to the presence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropy term. The drastic change of the magnetic scattering intensities observed when a proportion of Br is replaced by Cl ions, is proposed to be caused by a change of the magnetic order parameter. Instead of being parallel/antiparall…
We study the multiferroic properties in the distorted tetrahedral quasi-one dimensional spin system Cu$_3$Mo$_2$O$_9$, in which the effects of the low dimensionality and the magnetic frustration are expected to appear simultaneously. We clarify that the antiferromagnetic order is formed together with ferroelectric properties at $T_{\rm N}=7.9$ K under zero magnetic field and obtain the magnetic-field-temperature phase diagram by measuring dielectric constant and spontaneous electric polarization. It is found that the antiferromagnetic phase possesses a spontaneous electric polarization paralle…
We discuss the magnetic properties of a dimerized and completely frustrated tetrahedral spin-1/2 chain. Using a combination of exact diagonalization and bond-operator theory the quantum phase diagram is shown to incorporate a singlet-product, a dimer, and a Haldane phase. In addition we consider one-, and two-triplet excitations in the dimer phase and evaluate the magnetic Raman cross section which is found to be strongly renormalized by the presence of a two-triplet bound state. The link to a novel tellurate materials is clarified.
We investigated the static and dynamic magnetic properties of the polar ferrimagnet Mn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ in three magnetically ordered phases via magnetization, magnetic torque, and THz absorption spectroscopy measurements. The observed magnetic field dependence of the spin-wave resonances, including Brillouin zone-center and zone-boundary excitations, magnetization, and torque, are well described by an extended two-sublattice antiferromagnetic classical mean-field model. In this orbitally quenched system, the competing weak easy-plane and easy-axis single-ion anisotropies of the two crystallogra…
A hybrid spin-electron system on one-dimensional tetrahedral chain, in which the localized Ising spin regularly alternates with the mobile electron delocalized over three lattice sites, is exactly investigated using the generalized decoration-iteration transformation. The system exhibits either the ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic ground state depending on whether the ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interaction between the Ising spins and mobile electrons is considered. The enhanced magnetocaloric effect during the adiabatic demagnetization suggests a potential use of the investigated sys…
We consider the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on two one-dimensional frustrated lattices, double-tetrahedral chain and octahedral chain, with almost dispersionless (flat) lowest magnon band in a strong magnetic field. Using the localized magnons picture, we construct an effective description of the one-dimensional chains with triangle and square traps within the strong coupling approximation. We perform extensive exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group calculations to check the validity of the obtained effective Hamiltonians by comparison with the initial m…
We present a comprehensive study of the coupled tetrahedra-compound Cu2Te2O5Br2 by theory and experiments in external magnetic fields. We report the observation of a longitudinal magnon in Raman scattering in the ordered state close to quantum criticality. We show that the excited tetrahedral-singlet sets the energy scale for the magnetic ordering temperature T_N. This energy is determined experimentally. The ordering temperature T_N has an inverse-log dependence on the coupling parameters near quantum criticality.
The intersection of topology, symmetry, and magnetism yields a rich structure of possible phases. In this work, we study theoretically the consequences of magnetism on IrF4, which was recently identified as a possible candidate topological nodal chain semimetal in the absence of magnetic order. We show that the spin-orbital nature of the Ir moments gives rise to strongly anisotropic magnetic couplings resembling a tetrahedral compass model on a diamond lattice. The predicted magnetic ground state preserves key symmetries protecting the nodal lines, such that they persist into the ordered phase…
CaBaFe4O7 is a mixed-valent transition metal oxide having both Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions in tetrahedral coordination. Here we characterize its magnetic properties by magnetization measurements and investigate its local electronic structure using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Fe L2,3 edges, in combination with multiplet cluster and spin-resolved band structure calculations. We found that the Fe2+ ion in the unusual tetrahedral coordination is Jahn-Teller active with the high-spin e^2 (up) t2^3 (up) e^1 (down) configuration having a x^2-y^2-like electron for the minority spin. We deduce tha…
Recently, it has been rigorously verified that several one-dimensional (1D) spin models may exhibit a peculiar pseudo-transition accompanied with anomalous response of thermodynamic quantities in a close vicinity of pseudo-critical temperature. In the present work we will introduce and exactly solve a mixed spin-(1/2,1) Ising-Heisenberg double-tetrahedral chain in an external magnetic field as another particular example of 1D lattice-statistical model with short-range interactions that displays a pseudo-transition of this type. The investigated model exhibits at zero temperature three ferrimag…
Resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, neutron scattering and x-ray crystallography measurements were used to study the evolution of magnetic order and crystallographic structure in single-crystal samples of the Ba1-xSrxFe2As2 and Sr1-yCayFe2As2 series. A non-monotonic dependence of the magnetic ordering temperature T0 on chemical pressure is compared to the progression of the antiferromagnetic staggered moment, characteristics of the ordering transition and structural parameters to reveal a distinct relationship between the magnetic energy scale and the tetrahedral bond angle, even far above T…
Cd2Os2O7 shows a peculiar metal-insulator transition at 227 K with magnetic ordering in a frustrated pyrochlore lattice, but its magnetic structure in the ordered state and the transition origin are yet uncovered. We observed a commensurate magnetic peak by resonant x-ray scattering in a high-quality single crystal. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering experiments confirmed that the transition is not accompanied with any spatial symmetry breaking. We propose a noncollinear all-in/all-out spin arrangement on the tetrahedral network made of Os atoms. Based on this we suggest that the transitio…
A quantum mean field theory of the pyrochlore lattice is presented. The starting point is not the individual magnetic ions, as in the usual Curie-Weiss mean field theory, but a set of interacting corner sharing tetrahedra. We check the consistency of the model against magnetic susceptibility data, and find a good agreement between the theoretical predictions and the experimental data. Implications of the model and future extensions are also discussed.
The double-tetrahedral chain in a longitudinal magnetic field, whose nodal lattice sites occupied by the localized Ising spins regularly alternate with triangular plaquettes with the dynamics described by the Hubbard model, is rigorously investigated. It is demonstrated that the uniform change of electron concentration controlled by the chemical potential in a combination with the competition between model parameters and the external magnetic field leads to the formation of one chiral and seven non-chiral phases at the absolute zero temperature. Rational plateaux at one-third and one-half of t…
We show that pharmacosiderite is a novel cluster antiferromagnet comprising frustrated regular tetrahedra made of spin-5/2 Fe3+ ions that are arranged in the primitive cubic lattice. The connectivity of the tetrahedra and the inter-cluster interaction of 2.9 K, which is significantly large compared with the intra-cluster interaction of 10.6 K, gives a unique playground for frustration physics. An unconventional antiferromagnetic order is observed below TN ~ 6 K, which is accompanied by a weak ferromagnetic moment and a large fluctuation as evidenced by Mossbauer spectroscopy. A q = 0 magnetic …
We have investigated the structural and magnetic transitions in CsCoO$_2$ using calorimetric measurements, neutron powder diffraction (NPD), density functional theory (DFT) calculations and muon-spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. CsCoO$_2$ exhibits three-dimensional long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at 424~K, resulting in antiferromagnetic alignment of chains of ferromagnetically ordered Co-Co spin dimers. Although there is no change in magnetic structure around a structural transition at $T^{*}=100$~K, the resulting bifurcation of corner-shared Co--O--Co bond angles causes a weakeni…

We show that strong electromagnon peaks can be found in absorption spectra of non-collinear magnets exhibiting a linear magnetoelectric effect. The frequencies of these peaks coincide with the frequencies of antiferromagnetic resonances and the ratio of the spectral weights of the electromagnon and antiferromagnetic resonance is related to the ratio of the static magnetoelectric constant and magnetic susceptibility. Using a Kagome lattice antiferromagnet as an example, we show that frustration of spin ordering gives rise to magnetoelastic instabilities at strong spin-lattice coupling, which tr…
We investigate the spectroscopic magnetic excitations in molecular magnets with complex intermediate structure among the magnetic ions. Our approach consists in introducing a modified spin Hamiltonian that allows for discrete coupling parameters accounting for all energetically favorable spatial distributions of the valence electrons along the exchange bridges connecting the constituent magnetic ions. We discuss the physical relevance of the constructed Hamiltonian and derive its eigenvalues. The model is applied to explore the magnetic excitations of the tetrameric molecular magnet Ni$_4$Mo$_…
Frustrated magnets are one class of fascinating materials that host many intriguing phases such as spin ice, spin liquid and complex long-range magnetic orderings at low temperatures. In this work we use first-principles calculations to find that in a wide range of magnetically frustrated oxides, at zero temperature a number of non-collinear magnetic orderings are more stable than the type-I collinear ordering that is observed at finite temperatures. The emergence of non-collinear orderings in those complex oxides is due to higher-order exchange interactions that originate from second-row and …
In the highly frustrated pyrochlore magnet spins form a lattice of corner sharing tetrahedra. We show that the tetrahedral ``molecule'' at the heart of this structure undergoes a Jahn-Teller distortion when lattice motion is coupled to the antiferromagnetism. We extend this analysis to the full pyrochlore lattice by means of Landau theory and argue that it should exhibit spin-Peierls phases with bond order but no spin order. We find a range of Neel phases, with collinear, coplanar and noncoplanar order. While collinear Neel phases are easiest to generate microscopically, we also exhibit an int…
We demonstrate that point-like defects in non-collinear magnets give rise to a highly dispersive structure in the magnon scattering, violating a standard paradigm of its momentum independence. For a single impurity spin coupled to a prototypical non-collinear antiferromagnet we find that the resolvent is dominated by a distinct dispersive structure with its momentum-dependence set by the magnon dispersion and shifted by the ordering vector. This feature is a consequence of umklapp scattering off the impurity-induced spin texture, which arises due to the non-collinear ground state of the host s…
We obtain the non-collinear ground states of a triangular-lattice antiferromagnet with exchange interactions up to third nearest neighbors as a function of the single-ion anisotropy $D$. At a critical value of $D$, the collinear $\uudd $ phase transforms into a complex non-collinear phase with odd-order harmonics of the fundamental ordering wavevector $\vQ $. The observed elastic peaks at $2π\vx -\vQ $ in both Al- and Ga- doped CuFeO$_2$ are explained by a "scalene" distortion of the triangular lattice produced by the repulsion of neighboring oxygen atoms.
The correct stacking of hexagonal layers is used to obtain accurate estimates for the exchange and anisotropy parameters of the geometrically-frustrated antiferromagnet CuFeO$_2$. Those parameters are highly constrained by the stability of a collinear metamagnetic phase between fields of 13.5 and 20 T. Constrained fits of the spin-wave frequencies of the collinear $\uudd $ phase below 7 T are used to identify the magnetic unit cell of the metamagnetic $\uuudd $ phase, which contains two hexagonal layers and 10 Fe$^{3+}$ spins.
The $4d$ and $5d$ transition metal oxides have become important members of the emerging quantum materials family due to competition between onsite Coulomb repulsion ($U$) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Specifically, the systems with $d^5$ electronic configuration in an octahedral environment are found to be capable of posessing invariant semimetallic state and perturbations can lead to diverse magnetic phases. In this work, by formulating a multi-band Hubbard model and performing SOC tunable DFT+$U$ calculations on a prototype SrIrO$_3$ and extending the analysis to other iso-structural and is…
We carried out temperature and field dependent magnetic measurements to understand the evolution of magnetic non-collinearity near antiferromagnetic phase in conjunction with the evolution of magnetic entropy near phase transition. We observed the maximum change in entropy just before magnetic ordering of Cr3+ in YCrO3 with the maximum change in magnetic entropy of -0.38 Jkg-1K-1 at 8 Tesla external field. The data is linear in higher fields 3 T - 8 T , whereas it showed deviations in the lower field region. The maximum entropy change fits well with mean field approximation at higher fields, w…
We study static vacancies in the collinear magnetic phase of a frustrated Heisenberg $J_1$-$J_2$ model. It is found that vacancies can rapidly suppress the collinear antiferromagnetic state (CAFM)and generate a new magnetic phase, an anti-collinear magnetic phase (A-CAFM), due to magnetic frustration. We investigate the quantum phase transition between these two states by studying a variety of vacancy superlattices. We argue that the anti-collinear magnetic phase can exist in iron-based superconductors in the absence of any preceding structural transitions and an observation of this novel phas…
We derive ab inito exchange parameters for general non-collinear magnetic configurations, in terms of a multiple scattering formalism. We show that the general exchange formula has an anisotropic-like term even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling, and that this term is large, for instance for collinear configuration in bcc Fe, whereas for fcc Ni it is quite small. We demonstrate that keeping this term leads to that one should consider a biquadratic effective spin Hamiltonian even in case of collinear arrangement. In non-collinear systems this term results in new tensor elements, that are imp…
Using series expansion by continuous unitary transformations we study the magnetic properties of a frustrated tetrahedral spin-1/2 chain. Starting from the limit of isolated tetrahedra we analyze the evolution of the ground state energy and the elementary triplet dispersion as a function of the inter-tetrahedral coupling. The quantum phase diagram is evaluated and is shown to incorporate a singlet product, a dimer, and a Haldane phase. Comparison of our results with those from several other techniques, such as density matrix renormalization group, exact diagonalization and bond-operator theory…
An exactly solvable spin-electron tetrahedral chain, where the Ising spins localized at nodal lattice sites regularly alternate with three equivalent lattice sites available for one mobile electron is considered. The system with ferromagnetic interaction between the Ising spins and electrons exhibits an enhanced magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in the limit $H/|J|\to 0$ when the entropy is very small, whereas the system with antiferromagnetic interaction between the Ising spins and electrons exhibits an enhanced MCE around the field $H/J=1$ when the entropy is sufficiently close to the value $S/2N …
Fedotovite K$_2$Cu$_3$O(SO$_4$)$_3$ is a candidate of new quantum spin systems, in which the edge-shared tetrahedral (EST) spin-clusters consisting of Cu$^{2+}$ are connected by weak inter-cluster couplings to from one-dimensional array. Comprehensive experimental studies by magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal the presence of an effective $S$ = 1 Haldane state below $T \cong 4$ K. Rigorous theoretical studies provide an insight into the magnetic state of K$_2$Cu$_3$O(SO$_4$)$_3$: an EST cluster makes a triplet in the groun…
We performed comparative analysis for DFT+$U$ functionals to better understand their applicability to non-collinear magnetism. Taking LiNiPO$_4$ and Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ as examples, we investigated the results out of two formalisms based on charge-only density and spin density functional plus $U$ calculations. Our results show that the ground state spin order in terms of tilting angle is strongly dependent on Hund $J$. In particular, the opposite behavior of canting angles as a function of $J$ is found for LiNiPO$_4$. The dependence on the other physical parameters such as Hubbard $U$ and Slater par…
Predictions of the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility chi below the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperatures TN of local moment Heisenberg AFMs have been made previously using molecular field theory (MFT) but are very limited in their applicability. Here a MFT calculation of chi(T<=TN) is presented for a wide variety of collinear and noncollinear Heisenberg AFMs containing identical crystallographically equivalent spins without recourse to magnetic sublattices. The results are expressed in terms of directly measurable experimental parameters and are fitted with no adjustable parameters t…
Collinear and non-collinear spin structures of wurtzite phase CoO often appearing in nano-sized samples are investigated using first-principles density functional theory calculations. We examined the total energy of several different spin configurations, electronic structure and the effective magnetic coupling strengths. It is shown that the AF3-type antiferromagnetic ordering is energetically most stable among possible collinear configurations. Further, we found that a novel spiral spin order can be stabilized by including the relativistic spin-orbit coupling and the non-collinearity of spin …
A new microscopic mechanism of the magneto-electric (ME) effect based on the spin supercurrent is theoretically presented for non-collinear magnets. The close analogy between the superconductors (charge current) and magnets (spin current) is drawn to derive the distribution of the spin supercurrent and the resultant electric polarization. Application to the spiral spin structure is discussed.
Within the frameworks of the model using ab initio calculation data on d-band filling and on the shape of density of d-electron states in Fe2-xMnxAs, the mechanisms of stabilization of non-collinear magnetic ordered phases observed within the range of 1.19 <= x <= 1.365 are considered. The relation between baric peculiarities of the changes in stability of noncollinear phases and changes in the electronic structure characteristics of Fe2-xMnxAs due to lattice deformation is disclosed. It is found that stabilization of non-collinear phases and change in type of order-order phase transition with…
Neutron scattering studies on powder and single crystals have provided new evidences for unconventional magnetism in Cu2Te2O5Cl2. The compound is built from tetrahedral clusters of S=1/2 Cu2+ spins located on a tetragonal lattice. Magnetic ordering, emerging at TN=18.2 K, leads to a very complex multi-domain, most likely degenerate, ground state, which is characterized by an incommensurate (ICM) wave vector k ~ [0.15, 0.42,1/2]. The Cu2+ ions carry a magnetic moment of 0.67(1) mB/ Cu2+ at 1.5 K and form a four helices spin arrangement with two canted pairs within the tetrahedra. A domain redis…
Magnetic frustration in three dimensions (3D) manifests itself in the spin-$\frac12$ insulator Li$_2$CuW$_2$O$_8$. Density-functional band-structure calculations reveal a peculiar spin lattice built of triangular planes with frustrated interplane couplings. The saturation field of 29 T contrasts with the susceptibility maximum at 8.5 K and a relatively low Néel temperature $T_N\simeq 3.9$ K. Magnetic order below $T_N$ is collinear with the propagation vector $(0,\frac12,0)$ and an ordered moment of 0.65(4) $μ_B$ according to neutron diffraction data. This reduced ordered moment together with t…
We show that interlayer spins play a dual role in the Cairo pentagonal magnet Bi$_4$Fe$_5$O$_{13}$F, on one hand mediating the three-dimensional (3D) magnetic order and on the other driving spin-reorientation transitions both within and between the planes. The corresponding sequence of magnetic orders unraveled by neutron diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy features two orthogonal magnetic structures described by opposite local vector chiralities, and an intermediate, partly disordered phase with nearly collinear spins. A similar collinear phase has been predicted theoretically to be stabil…
The anomalous Hall effect (AHE), which in long-range ordered ferromagnets appears as a voltage transverse to the current and usually is proportional to the magnetization, often is believed to be of negligible size in antiferromagnets due to their low uniform magnetization. However, recent experiments and theory have demonstrated that certain antiferromagnets with a non-collinear arrangement of magnetic moments exhibit a sizeable spontaneous AHE at zero field due to a non-vanishing Berry curvature arising from the quantum mechanical phase of the electron's wave functions. Here we show that anti…
This paper examines the relation between the spin-wave instabilities of collinear magnetic phases and the resulting non-collinear phases for a geometrically-frustrated triangular-lattice antiferromagnet in the high spin limit. Using a combination of phenomenological and Monte-Carlo techniques, we demonstrate that the instability wave-vector with the strongest intensity in the collinear phase determines the wave-vector of a cycloid or the dominant elastic peak of a more complex non-collinear phase. Our results are related to the observed multi-ferroic phase of Al-doped CuFeO$_2$.
Investigations of molecular magnets are driven both by prospective applications in future storage technology or quantum computing as well as by fundamental questions. Nowadays numerical simulation techniques and computer capabilities make it possible to investigate spin Hamiltonians with realistic arrangements of local anisotropy tensors. In this contribution I will discuss the magnetic response of a small spin system with special emphasis on non-collinear alignments of the local anisotropy axes.
Motivated by cold atom experiments on Chern insulators, we study the honeycomb lattice Haldane-Hubbard Mott insulator of spin-$1/2$ fermions using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. We show that this model exhibits various chiral magnetic orders including a wide regime of triple-Q tetrahedral order. Incorporating third-neighbor hopping frustrates and ultimately melts this tetrahedral spin crystal. From analyzing low energy spectra, many-body Chern numbers, entanglement spectra, and modular matrices, we identify the molten state as a chiral spin liquid (CSL)…
High-resolution ac susceptibility and thermal conductivity measurement on Cu2Te2O5X2(X=Br,Cl) single crystals are reported. For Br-sample, sample dependence prevents to distinguish between possibilities of magnetically ordered and spin-singlet ground states. In Cl-sample a three-dimensional transition at 18.5 K is accompanied by almost isotropic behavior of susceptibility and almost switching behavior of thermal conductivity. Thermal conductivity studies suggest the presence of a tremendous spin-lattice coupling characterizing Cl- but not Br-sample. Below the transition Cl-sample is in a compl…
Non-collinear chiral antiferromagnets like Mn3Sn and Mn3Ge are known to show gigantic anomalous Hall response depending on the orientation of their inverse chiral magnetic order of Mn atoms in Kagome layers. Here we study the stability of such magnetic order in the absence of external magnetic fields on the basis of stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for a simplified two-dimensional model of these materials. We find that even without external magnetic fields, the ordered state is, once formed, highly stable against thermal fluctuations. Moreover, we show that if Mn spins are well conf…
We extend the density functional perturbation theory formalism to the case of non-collinear magnetism. The main problem comes with the exchange-correlation (XC) potential derivatives, which are the only ones that are affected by the non-collinearity of the system. Most of the present XC functionals are constructed at the collinear level, such that the off-diagonal (containing magnetization densities along $x$ and $y$ directions) derivatives cannot be calculated simply in the non-collinear framework. To solve this problem, we consider here possibilities to transform the non-collinear XC derivat…
Recent studies revealed that the electric multipole moments of insulators result in fractional electric charges localized to the hinges and corners of the sample. We here explore the magnetic analog of this relation. We show that a collinear antiferromagnet with spin $S$ defined on a $d$-dimensional cubic lattice features fractionally quantized magnetization $M_{\text{c}}^z=S/2^d$ at the corners. We find that the quantization is robust even in the presence of gapless excitations originating from the spontaneous formation of the Néel order, although the localization length diverges, suggesting …
The Co2V2O7 is recently reported to exhibit amazing magnetic field-induced magnetization plateaus and ferroelectricity, but its magnetic ground state remains ambiguous due to its structural complexity. Magnetometry measurements, and time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction (NPD) have been employed to study the structural and magnetic properties of Co2V2O7, which consists of two non-equivalent Co sites. Upon cooling below the Neél temperature TN = 6.3 K, we observe magnetic Bragg peaks at 2K in NPD which indicated the formation of long range magnetic order of Co2+ moments. After symmetry analy…
We perform a comparative study of the KCr3As3 and the K2Cr3As3 quasi 1D compounds, and show that the strong interplay between the lattice and the spin degrees of freedom promotes a new collinear ferrimagnetic ground state within the chains in presence of intrachain antiferromagnetic couplings. We propose that the interchain antiferromagnetic coupling in KCr3As3 plays a crucial role for the experimentally observed spin-glass phase with low critical temperature. In the same region of the parameter space, we predict K2Cr3As3 to be non-magnetic but on the verge of the magnetism, sustaining interch…
We study dilute magnetic impurities and vacancies in two-dimensional frustrated magnets with non-collinear order. Taking the triangular-lattice Heisenberg model as an example, we use quasiclassical methods to determine the impurity contributions to the magnetization and susceptibility. Most importantly, each impurity moment is not quantized, but receives non-universal screening corrections due to local relief of frustration. At finite temperatures, where bulk long-range order is absent, this implies an impurity-induced magnetic response of Curie form, with a prefactor corresponding to a fracti…
By means of powder neutron diffraction we investigate changes in the magnetic structure of the coplanar non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Ge caused by an application of hydrostatic pressure up to 5\phantom{ }GPa. At ambient conditions the kagomé layers of Mn atoms in Mn$_3$Ge order in a triangular 120$^{\circ}$ spin structure. Under high pressure the spins acquire a uniform out-of-plane canting, gradually transforming the magnetic texture to a non-coplanar configuration. With increasing pressure the canted structure fully transforms into the collinear ferromagnetic one. We observed that magn…
We propose that non-collinear magnetic order in quantum magnets can harbor a novel higher-order topological magnon phase with non-Hermitian topology and hinge magnon modes. We consider a three-dimensional system of interacting local moments on stacked-layers of honeycomb lattice. It initially favors a collinear magnetic order along an in-plane direction, which turns into a non-collinear order upon applying an external magnetic field perpendicular to the easy axis. We exploit the non-Hermitian nature of the magnon Hamiltonian to show that this field-induced transition corresponds to the transfo…
The ground state of the frustrated A-site magnetic spinel CoAl2O4 has been a controversial issue whether it is a collinear antiferromagnetic ordering or a spiral spin - liquid state, as the ratio of the two competing interactions, J2/J1 lies close to the boundary between these two ground states. Here, we address the magnetic ground state in CoAl2O4 with different amount of Co2+/Al3+ site disorder from the study of magnetoelectric effect and Monte Carlo simulations. CoAl2O4 with low site disorder exhibits linear magnetoelectric effect below the magnetic ordering temperature. With increasing dis…
