This paper studies thresholds in random generalized Johnson graphs for containing large cycles, i.e. cycles of variable length growing with the size of the graph. Thresholds are obtained for different growth rates.
We count cycles of an unbounded length in generalized Johnson graphs. Asymptotics of the number of such cycles is obtained for certain growth rates of the cycle length.
The generalized Turán number ${\rm ex}(G,H)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free subgraph of a graph $G.$ It is an important extension of the classical Turán number ${\rm ex}(n,H)$, which is the maximum number of edges in a graph with $n$ vertices that does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. In this paper, we consider the maximum number of edges in an even-cycle-free subgraph of the doubled Johnson graphs $J(n;k,k+1)$, which are bipartite subgraphs of hypercube graphs. We give an upper bound for ${\rm ex}(J(n;k,k+1),C_{2r})$ with any fixed $k\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ and any $n\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ wi…
Starting with the zero-square "zeon algebra" the connection with permanents is shown. Permanents of sub-matrices of a linear combination of the identity matrix and all-ones matrix leads to moment polynomials with respect to the exponential distribution. A permanent trace formula analogous to MacMahon's Master Theorem is presented and applied. Connections with permutation groups acting on sets and the Johnson association scheme arise. The families of numbers appearing as matrix entries turn out to be related to interesting variations on derangements. These generalized derangements are considere…
Graham and Pollak showed that the vertices of any graph $G$ can be addressed with $N$-tuples of three symbols, such that the distance between any two vertices may be easily determined from their addresses. An addressing is optimal if its length $N$ is minimum possible. In this paper, we determine an addressing of length $k(n-k)$ for the Johnson graphs $J(n,k)$ and we show that our addressing is optimal when $k=1$ or when $k=2, n=4,5,6$, but not when $n=6$ and $k=3$. We study the addressing problem as well as a variation of it in which the alphabet used has more than three symbols, for other gr…
The Johnson graph J(n,N) is defined as the graph whose vertices are the n-subsets of the set {1,2,...,N}, where two vertices are adjacent if they share exactly n - 1 elements. Unlike Johnson graphs, induced subgraphs of Johnson graphs (JIS for short) do not seem to have been studied before. We give some necessary conditions and some sufficient conditions for a graph to be JIS, including: in a JIS graph, any two maximal cliques share at most two vertices; all trees, cycles, and complete graphs are JIS; disjoint unions and Cartesian products of JIS graphs are JIS; every JIS graph of order n is a…
Let $P$ be a set of $n$ points in general position in the plane. A subset $I$ of $P$ is called an \emph{island} if there exists a convex set $C$ such that $I = P \cap C$. In this paper we define the \emph{generalized island Johnson graph} of $P$ as the graph whose vertex consists of all islands of $P$ of cardinality $k$, two of which are adjacent if their intersection consists of exactly $l$ elements. We show that for large enough values of $n$, this graph is connected, and give upper and lower bounds on its diameter.
A single permutation, seen as union of disjoint cycles, represents a regular graph of degree two. Consider $d$ many independent random permutations and superimpose their graph structures. It is a common model of a random regular (multi-) graph of degree $2d$. We consider the following dynamics. The dimension (i.e. size) of each permutation grows by coupled Chinese Restaurant Processes, while in time each permutation evolves according to the random transposition chain. Asymptotically in the size of the graph one observes a remarkable evolution of short cycles and linear eigenvalue statistics in…
The Bubble-sort graph $BS_n,\,n\geqslant 2$, is a Cayley graph over the symmetric group $Sym_n$ generated by transpositions from the set $\{(1 2), (2 3),\ldots, (n-1 n)\}$. It is a bipartite graph containing all even cycles of length $\ell$, where $4\leqslant \ell\leqslant n!$. We give an explicit combinatorial characterization of all its $4$- and $6$-cycles. Based on this characterization, we define generalized prisms in $BS_n,\,n\geqslant 5$, and present a new approach to construct a Hamiltonian cycle based on these generalized prisms.
Watkins (1969) first introduced the generalized Petersen graphs (GPGs) by modifying Petersen graph. Zhou and Feng (2012) modified GPGs and introduced the double generalized Petersen graphs (DGPGs). Kutnar and Petecki (2016) proved that DGPGs are Hamiltonian in special cases and conjectured that all DGPGs are Hamiltonian. In this paper, we construct Hamilton cycles in all DGPGs.
The goal of this paper is to analyse the asymptotic behavior of the cycle process and the total number of cycles of weighted and generalized weighted random permutations which are relevant models in physics and which extend the Ewens measure. We combine tools from combinatorics and complex analysis (e.g. singularity analysis of generating functions) to prove that under some analytic conditions (on relevant generating functions) the cycle process converges to a vector of independent Poisson variables and to establish a central limit theorem for the total number of cycles. Our methods allow us t…
The grid theorem, originally proved by Robertson and Seymour in Graph Minors V in 1986, is one of the most central results in the study of graph minors. It has found numerous applications in algorithmic graph structure theory, for instance in bidimensionality theory, and it is the basis for several other structure theorems developed in the graph minors project. In the mid-90s, Reed and Johnson, Robertson, Seymour and Thomas (see [Reed 97, Johnson, Robertson, Seymour, Thomas 01]), independently, conjectured an analogous theorem for directed graphs, i.e. the existence of a function f : N -> N su…
Let G be a graph whose edges are labeled by positive integers. Label each vertex with an integer and suppose if two vertices are joined by an edge, the vertex labels are congruent to each other modulo the edge label. The set of vertex labels satisfying this condition is called a generalized spline. Gilbert, Polster, and Tymoczko recently defined generalized splines based on work on polynomial splines by Billera, Rose, Haas, Goresky-Kottwitz-Machperson, and many others. We focus on generalized splines on $n$-cycles. We construct a particularly nice basis for the module of splines on $n$-cycles.…
In chomp on graphs, two players alternatingly pick an edge or a vertex from a graph. The player that cannot move any more loses. The questions one wants to answer for a given graph are: Which player has a winning strategy? Can a explicit strategy be devised? We answer these questions (and determine the Nim-value) for the class of generalized Kneser graphs and for several families of Johnson graphs. We also generalize some of these results to the clique complexes of these graphs. Furthermore, we determine which player has a winning strategy for some classes of threshold graphs.
The anti-Ramsey number $Ar(G,H)$ is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of $G$ with no rainbow copy of $H$. In this paper, we determine the exact anti-Ramsey number in the generalized Petersen graph $P_{n,k}$ for cycles $C_d$, where $1\leq k\leq \lfloor \frac{n-1}{2} \rfloor$ and $5\le d \le 6$. We also give an algorithm to obtain the upper bound or lower bound of anti-Ramsey number.
We determine the maximum number of copies of $K_{s,s}$ in a $C_{2s+2}$-free $n$-vertex graph for all integers $s \ge 2$ and sufficiently large $n$. Moreover, for $s\in\{2,3\}$ and any integer $n$ we obtain the maximum number of cycles of length $2s$ in an $n$-vertex $C_{2s+2}$-free bipartite graph.
For a set of integers $I$, we define a $q$-ary $I$-cycle to be a assignment of the symbols 1 through $q$ to the integers modulo $q^n$ so that every word appears on some translate of $I$. This definition generalizes that of de Bruijn cycles, and opens up a multitude of questions. We address the existence of such cycles, discuss ``reduced'' cycles (ones in which the all-zeroes string need not appear), and provide general bounds on the shortest sequence which contains all words on some translate of $I$. We also prove a variant on recent results concerning decompositions of complete graphs into cy…
An edge-colored graph $F$ is {\it rainbow} if each edge of $F$ has a unique color. The {\it rainbow Turán number} $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,F)$ of a graph $F$ is the maximum possible number of edges in a properly edge-colored $n$-vertex graph with no rainbow copy of $F$. The study of rainbow Turán numbers was introduced by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov, and Verstraëte. Johnson and Rombach introduced the following rainbow-version of generalized Turán problems: for fixed graphs $H$ and $F$, let $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,H,F)$ denote the maximum number of rainbow copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex properly edge-colored gra…
We develop direct bijections between the set $F_n^k$ of minimal factorizations of the long cycle $(0\,1\,\cdots\, kn)$ into $(k+1)$-cycle factors and the set $R_n^k$ of rooted labelled forests on vertices $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ with edges coloured with $\{0,1,\ldots,k-1\}$ that map natural statistics on the former to generalized Mahonian statistics on the latter. In particular, we examine the generalized major index on forests $R_n^k$ and show that it has a simple and natural interpretation in the context of factorizations. Our results extend those by the present authors (2021), which treated the ca…
We introduce a combinatorial enumeration problem that is solved using generalized Catalan numbers. We also study generalizations of the Cycle Lemma beyond the computation of the generalized Catalan numbers.
An edge coloring of a simple graph $G$ is said to be \textit{proper rainbow-cycle-forbidding} (PRCF, for short) if no two incident edges receive the same color and for any cycle in $G$, at least two edges of that cycle receive the same color. A graph $G$ is defined to be \textit{PRCF-good} if it admits a PRCF edge coloring, and $G$ is deemed \textit{PRCF-bad} otherwise. In recent work, Hoffman, et al. study PRCF edge colorings and find many examples of PRCF-bad graphs having girth less than or equal to 4. They then ask whether such graphs exist having girth greater than 4. In our work, we give…
Separating hash families are useful combinatorial structures which are generalizations of many well-studied objects in combinatorics, cryptography and coding theory. In this paper, using tools from graph theory and additive number theory, we solve several open problems and conjectures concerning bounds and constructions for separating hash families. Firstly, we discover that the cardinality of a separating hash family satisfies a Johnson-type inequality. As a result, we obtain a new upper bound, which is superior to all previous ones. Secondly, we present a construction for an infinite class o…
Gerbner, Patkós, Tuza, and Vizer recently initiated the study of $F$-saturated regular graphs. One of the essential problems in this line of research is determining when such a graph exists. Using generalized sum-free sets we prove that for any odd integer $k \geq 5$, there is an $n$-vertex regular $C_k$-saturated graph for all $n \geq n_k$. Our proof is based on constructing a special type of sum-free set in $\mathbb{Z}_n$. We prove that for all even $\ell \geq 4$ and integers $n > 12 \ell^2 + 36 \ell + 24$, there is a symmetric complete $( \ell , 1)$-sum-free set in $\mathbb{Z}_n$. We pose t…
Given graphs $F$ and $H$, the generalized rainbow Turán number $\text{ex}(n,F,\text{rainbow-}H)$ is the maximum number of copies of $F$ in an $n$-vertex graph with a proper edge-coloring that contains no rainbow copy of $H$. B. Janzer determined the order of magnitude of $\text{ex}(n,C_s,\text{rainbow-}C_t)$ for all $s\geq 4$ and $t\geq 3$, and a recent result of O. Janzer implied that $\text{ex}(n,C_3,\text{rainbow-}C_{2k})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. We prove the corresponding upper bound for the remaining cases, showing that $\text{ex}(n,C_3,\text{rainbow-}C_{2k+1})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. This matches the known…
Let $n$, $k$ and $t$ be integers with $1\leq t< k \leq n$. The \emph{generalized Kneser graph} $K(n,k,t)$ is a graph whose vertices are the $k$-subsets of a fixed $n$-set, where two $k$-subsets $A$ and $B$ are adjacent if $|A\cap B|<t$. The graph $K(n,k,1)$ is the well-known \emph{Kneser graph}. In 2014, Harvey and Wood determined the exact treewidth of the Kneser graphs for large $n$ with respect to $k$. In this paper, we give the exact treewidth of the generalized Kneser graphs for $t\geq2$ and large $n$ with respect to $k$ and $t$. In the special case when $t=k-1$, the graph $K(n,k,k-1)$ us…
In a generalized Turán problem, we are given graphs $H$ and $F$ and seek to maximize the number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph of order $n$. We consider generalized Turán problems where the host graph is planar. In particular we obtain the order of magnitude of the maximum number of copies of a fixed tree in a planar graph containing no even cycle of length at most $2\ell$, for all $\ell$, $\ell \geq 1$. We obtain the order of magnitude of the maximum number of cycles of a given length in a planar $C_4$-free graph. An exact result is given for the maximum number of $5$-cycles in a $C_4$…
The arboricity of a graph G is the minimum number of colours needed to colour the edges of G so that every cycle gets at least two colours. Given a positive integer p, we define the generalized p-arboricity Arb_p(G) of a graph G as the minimum number of colours needed to colour the edges of a multigraph G in such a way that every cycle C gets at least min(|C|; p + 1) colours. In the particular case where G has girth at least p + 1, Arb_p(G) is the minimum size of a partition of the edge set of G such that the union of any p parts induce a forest. If we require further that the edge colouring b…
This paper is an in-depth analysis of the generalized $\vartheta$-number of a graph. The generalized $\vartheta$-number, $\vartheta_k(G)$, serves as a bound for both the $k$-multichromatic number of a graph and the maximum $k$-colorable subgraph problem. We present various properties of $\vartheta_k(G)$, such as that the sequence $(\vartheta_k(G))_k$ is increasing and bounded from above by the order of the graph $G$. We study $\vartheta_k(G)$ when $G$ is the strong, disjunction or Cartesian product of two graphs. We provide closed form expressions for the generalized $\vartheta$-number on seve…
The paper deals with some generalizations of Fibonacci and Lucas sequences, arising from powers of paths and cycles, respectively. In the first part of the work we provide a formula for the number of edges of the Hasse diagram of the independent sets of the h-th power of a path ordered by inclusion. For h=1 such a diagram is called a Fibonacci cube, and for h>1 we obtain a generalization of the Fibonacci cube. Consequently, we derive a generalized notion of Fibonacci sequence, called h-Fibonacci sequence. Then, we show that the number of edges of a generalized Fibonacci cube is obtained by con…
In 1952, Dirac proved that every $2$-connected $n$-vertex graph with the minimum degree $k+1$ contains a cycle of length at least $\min\{n, 2(k+1)\}$. Here we obtain a stability version of this result by characterizing those graphs with minimum degree $k$ and circumference at most $2k+1$. We present applications of the above-stated result by obtaining generalized Turán numbers. In particular, for all $\ell \geq 5$ we determine how many copies of a five-cycle as well as four-cycle are necessary to guarantee that the graph has circumference larger than $\ell$. In addition, we give a new proof of…
We prove the existence of infinite classes of cyclic G-decompositions of the complete multipartite graph, G being a caterpillar, a hairy cycle or a cycle. All the results are obtained by the construction of d-divisible $α$-labelings of G, introduced in [A. Pasotti, On d-graceful labelings, to appear on Ars Combin.] as a generalization of classical $α$-labelings, whose existence implies that one of graph decompositions.
In this paper we extend the study of three state lively quantum walks on cycles by considering the coin operator as a linear sum of permutation matrices, which is a generalization of the Grover matrix. First we provide a complete characterization of orthogonal matrices of order $3\times 3$ which are linear sum of permutation matrices. Consequently, we determine several groups of complex, real and rational orthogonal matrices. We establish that an orthogonal matrix of order $3\times 3$ is a linear sum of permutation matrices if and only if it is permutative. Finally we determine period of livel…
For integers $k\geq 1$ and $n\geq 2k+1$, the Kneser graph $K(n,k)$ is the graph whose vertices are the $k$-element subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and whose edges connect pairs of subsets that are disjoint. The Kneser graphs of the form $K(2k+1,k)$ are also known as the odd graphs. We settle an old problem due to Meredith, Lloyd, and Biggs from the 1970s, proving that for every $k\geq 3$, the odd graph $K(2k+1,k)$ has a Hamilton cycle. This and a known conditional result due to Johnson imply that all Kneser graphs of the form $K(2k+2^a,k)$ with $k\geq 3$ and $a\geq 0$ have a Hamilton cycle. We als…
Genome rearrangements can be modeled as $k$-breaks, which break a genome at k positions and glue the resulting fragments in a new order. In particular, reversals, translocations, fusions, and fissions are modeled as $2$-breaks, and transpositions are modeled as $3$-breaks. While $k$-break rearrangements for $k>3$ have not been observed in evolution, they are used in cancer genomics to model chromothripsis, a catastrophic event of multiple breakages happening simultaneously in a genome. It is known that the $k$-break distance between two genomes (i.e., the minimum number of $k$-breaks required …
We say that a Hamilton cycle $C=(x_1,\ldots,x_n)$ in a graph $G$ is $k$-symmetric, if the mapping $x_i\mapsto x_{i+n/k}$ for all $i=1,\ldots,n$, where indices are considered modulo $n$, is an automorphism of $G$. In other words, if we lay out the vertices $x_1,\ldots,x_n$ equidistantly on a circle and draw the edges of $G$ as straight lines, then the drawing of $G$ has $k$-fold rotational symmetry, i.e., all information about the graph is compressed into a $360^\circ/k$ wedge of the drawing. The maximum $k$ for which there exists a $k$-symmetric Hamilton cycle in $G$ is referred to as the Hami…
