Binary black holes with spins that are aligned with the orbital angular momentum do not precess. However, post-Newtonian calculations predict that "up-down" binaries, in which the spin of the heavier (lighter) black hole is aligned (antialigned) with the orbital angular momentum, are unstable when the spins are slightly perturbed from perfect alignment. This instability provides a possible mechanism for the formation of precessing binaries in environments where sources are preferentially formed with (anti) aligned spins. In this paper, we present the first full numerical relativity simulations capturing this instability. These simulations span $\sim 100$ orbits and $\sim 3$-$5$ precession cycles before merger, making them some of the longest numerical relativity simulations to date. Initialized with a small perturbation of $1^{\circ}$-$10^{\circ}$, the instability causes a dramatic growth of the spin misalignments, which can reach $\sim 90^{\circ}$ near merger. We show that this leaves a strong imprint on the subdominant modes of the gravitational wave signal, which can potentially be used to distinguish up-down binaries from other sources. Finally, we show that post-Newtonian and effective-one-body approximants are able to reproduce the unstable dynamics of up-down binaries extracted from numerical relativity.
We present results on the effect of the stiffness of the equation of state on the dynamical bar-mode instability in rapidly rotating polytropic models of neutron stars in full General Relativity. We determine the change in the threshold for the emergence of the instability for a range of the adiabatic $Γ$ index from 2.0 to 3.0, including two values chosen to mimic more realistic equations of state at high densities.
We present results about the effect of the use of a stiffer equation of state, namely the ideal-fluid $Γ=2.75$ ones, on the dynamical bar-mode instability in rapidly rotating polytropic models of neutron stars in full General Relativity. We determine the change on the critical value of the instability parameter $β$ for the emergence of the instability when the adiabatic index $Γ$ is changed from 2 to 2.75 in order to mimic the behavior of a realistic equation of state. In particular, we show that the threshold for the onset of the bar-mode instability is reduced by this change in the stiffness…
It is tempting to raise the issue of (metric) chaos in general relativity since the Einstein equations are a set of highly nonlinear equations which may exhibit dynamically very complicated solutions for the space-time metric. However, in general relativity it is not easy to construct indicators of chaos which are gauge-invariant. Therefore it is reasonable to start by investigating - at first - the possibility of a gauge-invariant description of local instability. In this paper we examine an approach which aims at describing the dynamics in purely geometrical terms. The dynamics is formulated…
We present accurate simulations of the dynamical bar-mode instability in full General Relativity focussing on two aspects which have not been investigated in detail in the past. Namely, on the persistence of the bar deformation once the instability has reached its saturation and on the precise determination of the threshold for the onset of the instability in terms of the parameter $β={T}/{|W|}$. We find that generic nonlinear mode-coupling effects appear during the development of the instability and these can severely limit the persistence of the bar deformation and eventually suppress the in…
We present numerical results on the hydrodynamic stability of coalescing binary stars in the first post Newtonian(1PN) approximation of general relativity. We pay particular attention to the hydrodynamical instability of corotating binary stars in equilibrium states assuming the stiff polytropic equation of state with the adiabatic constant $Γ=3$. In previous 1PN numerical studies on corotating binary stars in equilibrium states, it was found that along the sequence of binary stars as a function of the orbital separation, they have the energy and/or angular momentum minima where the secular in…
The gravitational wave solutions obtained from a perturbation about conformally flat backgrounds in Einstein gravity are investigated. A perturbation theory analysis of the Lesame, Ellis and Dunsby results, based on a covariant approach, shows that for gravitational waves interacting with irrotational dust, the equations are linearization unstable. The gravitational wave equations based on the Weyl curvature tensor must be solved by non-perturbative methods. The significance of this result for gravitational wave calculations and experiments is discussed.
Spin precession occurs in binary black holes whose spins are misaligned with the orbital angular momentum. Otherwise, the spin configuration is constant and the subsequent binary dynamics and gravitational-wave emission are much simpler. We summarize a series of works which has shown that, while three of the aligned configurations are stable equilibria, the `up-down' configuration, in which the heavier (lighter) black hole is (anti) aligned with the orbital angular momentum, is unstable when perturbed; at a critical point in the inspiral the black hole spins begin to tilt wildly as precession …
Adopting our new method for matching general relativistic, ideal magnetohydrodynamics to its force-free limit, we perform the first systematic simulations of force-free pulsar magnetospheres in general relativity. We endow the neutron star with a general relativistic dipole magnetic field, model the interior with ideal magnetohydrodynamics, and adopt force-free electrodynamics in the exterior. Comparing the spin-down luminosity to its corresponding Minkowski value, we find that general relativistic effects give rise to a modest enhancement: the maximum enhancement for $n=1$ polytropes is $\sim…
This talk describes some recent results [16] regarding the problem of uniqueness in the large (also known as strong cosmic censorship) for the initial value problem in general relativity. In order to isolate the essential analytic features of the problem from the complicated setting of gravitational collapse in which it arises, some familiarity with conformal properties of certain celebrated special solutions of the theory of relativity will have to be developed. This talk is an attempt to present precisely these features to an audience of non-specialists, in a way which will hopefully fully m…
We study the dynamical stability against bar-mode deformation of rapidly and differentially rotating stars in the first post-Newtonian approximation of general relativity. We vary the compaction of the star $M/R$ (where $M$ is the gravitational mass and $R$ the equatorial circumferential radius) between 0.01 and 0.05 to isolate the influence of relativistic gravitation on the instability. For compactions in this moderate range, the critical value of $β\equiv T/W$ for the onset of the dynamical instability (where $T$ is the rotational kinetic energy and $W$ the gravitational binding energy) sli…
We present fully general-relativistic numerical evolutions of self-gravitating tori around spinning black holes with dimensionless spin $a/M = 0.7$ parallel or anti-parallel to the disk angular momentum. The initial disks are unstable to the hydrodynamic Papaloizou-Pringle Instability which causes them to grow persistent orbiting matter clumps. The effect of black hole spin on the growth and saturation of the instability is assessed. We find that the instability behaves similarly to prior simulations with non-spinning black holes, with a shift in frequency due to spin-induced changes in disk o…
In this work we present 3D numerical relativity simulations of thick accretion disks around tilted Kerr BH. We investigate the evolution of three different initial disk models with a range of initial black hole spin magnitudes and tilt angles. For all the disk-to-black hole mass ratios considered (0.044-0.16) we observe significant black hole precession and nutation during the evolution. This indicates that for such mass ratios, neglecting the self-gravity of the disks by evolving them in a fixed background black hole spacetime is not justified. We find that the two more massive models are uns…
We perform some numerical study of the secular triaxial instability of rigidly rotating homogeneous fluid bodies in general relativity. In the Newtonian limit, this instability arises at the bifurcation point between the Maclaurin and Jacobi sequences. It can be driven in astrophysical systems by viscous dissipation. We locate the onset of instability along several constant baryon mass sequences of uniformly rotating axisymmetric bodies for compaction parameter $M/R = 0-0.275$. We find that general relativity weakens the Jacobi like bar mode instability, but the stabilizing effect is not very …
It is widely accepted by physicists and philosophers of physics alike that there are certain contexts in which general relativity will "break down". In such cases, one expects to need some as-yet undiscovered successor theory. This paper will discuss certain pathologies of general relativity that might be taken to signal that the theory is breaking down, and consider how one might expect a successor theory to do better. The upshot will be an unconventional interpretation of the "Strong Cosmic Censorship Hypothesis".
We show that homogeneous black strings of third-order Lovelock theory are unstable under s-wave perturbations. This analysis is done in dimension $D=9$, which is the lowest dimension that allows the existence of homogeneous black strings in a theory that contains only the third-order Lovelock term in the Lagrangian. As is the case in general relativity, the instability is produced by long wavelength perturbations and it stands for the perturbative counterpart of a thermal instability. We also provide a comparative analysis of the instabilities of black strings at a fixed radius in general rela…
In a subclass of scalar-tensor theories, it has been shown that standard general relativity solutions of neutron stars and black holes with trivial scalar field profiles are unstable. Such an instability leads to solutions which are different from those of general relativity and have non-trivial scalar field profiles, in a process called scalarization. In the present work we focus on scalarization due to a non-minimal coupling of the scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet curvature invariant. The coupling acts as a tachyonic mass for the scalar mode, thus leading to the instability of general relati…
Numerical-relativity simulation is performed for rapidly spinning black holes (BHs) in a higher-dimensional spacetime of special symmetries for the dimensionality $6 \leq d \leq 8$. We find that higher-dimensional BHs, spinning rapidly enough, are dynamically unstable against nonaxisymmetric bar-mode deformation and spontaneously emit gravitational waves, irrespective of $d$ as in the case $d=5$ \cite{SY09}. The critical values of a nondimensional spin parameter for the onset of the instability are $q:=a/μ^{1/(d-3)} \approx 0.74$ for $d=6$, $\approx 0.73$ for $d=7$, and $\approx 0.77$ for $d=8…
We study the gravitational instability of a general relativistic complex scalar field with a quartic self-interaction in an infinite homogeneous static background. This quantum relativistic Jeans problem provides a simplified framework to study the formation of the large-scale structures of the Universe in the case where dark matter is made of a scalar field. The scalar field may represent the wave function of a relativistic self-gravitating Bose-Einstein condensate. Exact analytical expressions for the dispersion relation and Jeans length $λ_J$ are obtained from a hydrodynamical representatio…
We perform high-resolution magnetohydrodynamics simulations of binary neutron star mergers in numerical relativity on the Japanese supercomputer K. The neutron stars and merger remnants are covered by a grid spacing of 70\,m, which yields the highest-resolution results among those derived so far. By an in-depth resolution study, we clarify several amplification mechanisms of magnetic fields during the binary neutron star merger for the first time. First, the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability developed in the shear layer at the onset of the merger significantly amplifies the magnetic fields. A hyper…
We solve the eigenvalue problem of general relativity for the case of charged black holes in two-dimensional heterotic string theory, derived by McGuigan et al. For the case of $m^{2}>q^{2}$, we find a physically acceptable time-dependent growing mode; thus the black hole is unstable. The extremal case $m^{2}=q^{2}$ is stable.
We study the dynamical stability against bar-mode deformation of rapidly spinning neutron stars with differential rotation. We perform fully relativistic 3D simulations of compact stars with $M/R \geq 0.1$, where $M$ is the total gravitational mass and $R$ the equatorial circumferential radius. We adopt an adiabatic equation of state with adiabatic index $Γ=2$. As in Newtonian theory, we find that stars above a critical value of $β\equiv T/W$ (where $T$ is the rotational kinetic energy and $W$ the gravitational binding energy) are dynamically unstable to bar formation. For our adopted choices …
It has long been known that, in higher-dimensional general relativity, there are black hole solutions with an arbitrarily large angular momentum for a fixed mass. We examine the geometry of the event horizon of such ultra-spinning black holes and argue that these solutions become unstable at large enough rotation. Hence we find that higher-dimensional general relativity imposes an effective `Kerr-bound' on spinning black holes through a dynamical decay mechanism. Our results also give indications of the existence of new stationary black holes with `rippled' horizons of spherical topology. We c…
Gravitational instability in classical Jeans theory, General Relativity, and modified gravity is considered. The background density increase leads to a faster growth of perturbations in comparison with the standard theory. The transition to the Newtonian gauge in the case of coordinate dependent background metric functions is studied. For modified gravity a new high frequency stable solution is found.
Binary black holes in which both spins are aligned with the binary's orbital angular momentum do not precess. However, the up-down configuration, in which the spin of the heavier (lighter) black hole is aligned (anti-aligned) with the orbital angular momentum, is unstable to spin precession at small orbital separations. We first cast the spin precession problem in terms of a simple harmonic oscillator and provide a cleaner derivation of the instability onset. Surprisingly, we find that following the instability, up-down binaries do not disperse in the available parameter space but evolve towar…
Relativistic Cowling approximation in which all metric perturbations are omitted is applied to non-axisymmetric infinitesimal oscillations of uniformly rotating general relativistic polytropes. Frequencies of lower order f-modes which are important in analysis of secular instability driven by gravitational radiation are investigated and neutral points of the mode along equilibrium sequences of rotating polytropes are determined. Since this approximation becomes more accurate as stars are more relativistic and/or as they rotates more rapidly, we will be able to analyze how a rotation period of …
We perturbatively construct asymptotically $\mathbb{R}^{1,3}\times\mathbb{T}^2$ black branes with multiple inhomogeneous directions and show that some of them are thermodynamically preferred over uniform branes in both the microcanonical and canonical ensembles. This demonstrates that, unlike five-dimensional black strings, the instability of some unstable black branes has a plausible endpoint that does not require a violation of cosmic censorship.
The special theory of relativity has fundamentally changed our views of space and time. The relativity of simultaneity in particular, and the theory of relativity as a whole, still presents significant difficulty for beginners in the theory. The difficulty stems from the fact that the usual presentation of special relativity is based on Newtonian concepts, which are relativized and change their meaning in the course of the presentation. A better pedagogical practice, in our opinion, would be to base the presentation from the very beginning on the four-dimensional formulation of Minkowski and t…
We study the superradiant instability of a massive boson around a spinning black hole in full general relativity without assuming spatial symmetries. We focus on the case of a rapidly spinning black hole in the presence of a vector boson with a Compton wavelength comparable to the black hole radius, which is the regime where relativistic effects are maximized. We follow the growth of the boson cloud through superradiance into the nonlinear regime as it spins down the black hole, reaches a maximum energy, and begins to dissipate through the emission of gravitational waves. We find that the supe…
In general relativity, the Kerr metric uniquely represents the geometry surrounding an isolated, rotating black hole. An identification of significant non-Kerr features in some astrophysical source would then provide a `smoking-gun' for the break-down of general relativity in the strong-field regime. On the other hand, Kerr black holes are common to many other theories of gravity, and thus a validation of the Kerr metric does not necessarily favour general relativity amongst all possibilities. The nature of gravitational perturbations will however differ between different theories of gravity. …
We study scalar fields in a black hole background and show that, when the scalar is suitably coupled to curvature, rapid rotation can induce a tachyonic instability. This instability, which is the hallmark of spontaneous scalarization in the linearized regime, is expected to be quenched by nonlinearities and endow the black hole with scalar hair. Hence, our results demonstrate the existence of a broad class of theories that share the same stationary black hole solutions with general relativity at low spins, but which exhibit black hole hair at sufficiently high spins ($a/M\gtrsim 0.5$). This r…
We implement advanced Riemann solvers HLLC and HLLD \cite{Mignone:2005ft,MUB:2009} together with an advanced constrained transport scheme \cite{Gardiner:2007nc} in a numerical-relativity neutrino-radiation magnetohydrodynamics code. We validate our implementation by performing a series of one- and multi-dimensional test problems for relativistic hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics in both Minkowski spacetime and a static black hole spacetime. We find that the numerical solutions with the advanced Riemann solvers are more accurate than those with the HLLE solver \cite{DelZanna:2002rv}, which…
The gravitational instability of inhomogeneities in the expanding universe is studied by the relativistic second-order approximation. Using the tetrad formalism we consider irrotational dust universes and get equations very similar to those given in the Lagrangian perturbation theory in Newtonian cosmology. Neglecting the cosmological constant and assuming a flat background model we give the solutions of the nonlinear dynamics of cosmological perturbations. We present the complete second-order solutions, which extend and improve earlier works.
It is often the case in numerical relativity that schemes that are known to be convergent for well posed systems are used in evolutions of weakly hyperbolic (WH) formulations of Einstein's equations. Here we explicitly show that with several of the discretizations that have been used through out the years, this procedure leads to non-convergent schemes. That is, arbitrarily small initial errors are amplified without bound when resolution is increased, independently of the amount of numerical dissipation introduced. The lack of convergence introduced by this instability can be particularly subt…
The 3-level leapfrog time integration algorithm is an attractive choice for numerical relativity simulations since it is time-symmetric and avoids non-physical damping. In Newtonian problems without velocity dependent forces, this method enjoys the advantage of long term stability. However, for more general differential equations, whether ordinary or partial, delayed onset numerical instabilities can arise and destroy the solution. A known cure for such instabilities appears to have been overlooked in many application areas. We give an improved cure ("deloused leapfrog") that both reduces memo…
We investigate the development of the magnetic Rayleigh-Taylor instability at the inner edge of an astrophysical disk around a spinning central black hole. We solve the equations of general relativity that govern small amplitude oscillations of a discontinuous interface in a Keplerian disk threaded by an ordered magnetic field, and we derive a stability criterion that depends on the central black hole spin and the accumulated magnetic field. We also compare our results with the results of GR MHD simulations of black hole accretion flows that reach a magnetically arrested state (MAD). We found …
We describe the full nonlinear development of the superradiant instability for a charged massless scalar field, coupled to general relativity and electromagnetism, in the vicinity of a Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black hole. The presence of the negative cosmological constant provides a natural context for considering perfectly reflecting boundary conditions and studying the dynamics as the scalar field interacts repeatedly with the black hole. At early times, small superradiant perturbations grow as expected from linearized studies. Backreaction then causes the black hole to lose charge and mass un…
Spontaneous scalarization is an interesting mechanism for modification of gravity by nonminimal coupling of a scalar field to matter or curvature invariants in the context of scalar-tensor theories, and its onset is signaled by linear instability of the scalar field around the corresponding general relativity solution. We thus perform the linear stability analysis of the scalar field about general relativity solutions and highlight a crucial difference between a spherically symmetric profile and a planar symmetric profile. We clarify that the critical value for the instability is sensitive to …
We review the Seiberg-Witten instability of topological black holes in Anti-de Sitter space due to nucleation of brane-anti-brane pairs. We start with black holes in general relativity, and then proceed to discuss the peculiar property of topological black holes in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity -- they have instabilities that occur at only finite range of distance away from the horizon. This behavior is not unique to black holes in Hořava-Lifshitz theory, as it is also found in the relatively simple systems of charged black hole with dilaton hair that arise in low energy limit of string theory.
Generic models of regular black holes have separate outer and inner horizons, both with nonzero surface gravity. It has been shown that a nonzero inner horizon surface gravity results in exponential instability at the inner horizon controlled by this parameter. This phenomenon takes the name of "mass inflation instability", and its presence has put in question the physical viability of regular black holes as alternatives to their (singular) general relativity counterparts. In this paper, we show that it is possible to make the inner horizon surface gravity vanish, while maintaining the separat…
It is known that one can formulate an action in teleparallel gravity which is equivalent to general relativity, up to a boundary term. In this geometry we have vanishing curvature, and non-vanishing torsion. The action is constructed by three different contractions of torsion with specific coefficients. By allowing these coefficients to be arbitrary we get the theory which is called `new general relativity'. In this note, the Lagrangian for new general relativity is written down in ADM-variables. In order to write down the Hamiltonian we need to invert the velocities to canonical variables. Ho…
In electrovacuum stationary, asymptotically flat black holes in scalar-tensor theories of gravity are described by the Kerr-Newman family of solutions, just as in general relativity. We show that there exist two mechanisms which can render Kerr black holes unstable when matter is present in the vicinity of the black hole, as this induces an effective mass for the scalar. The first mechanism is a tachyonic instability that appears when the effective mass squared is negative, triggering the development of scalar hair --- a black hole version of "spontaneous scalarization". The second instability…
Hypermassive neutron stars (HMNSs) -- equilibrium configurations supported against collapse by rapid differential rotation -- are possible transient remnants of binary neutron star mergers. Using newly developed codes for magnetohydrodynamic simulations in dynamical spacetimes, we are able to track the evolution of a magnetized HMNS in full general relativity for the first time. We find that secular angular momentum transport due to magnetic braking and the magnetorotational instability results in the collapse of an HMNS to a rotating black hole, accompanied by a gravitational wave burst. The …
We consider the evolution of black hole involving an $f(R)$ global monopole based on the Extended Uncertainty Principle (EUP). The black hole evolutions refer to the instability due to the Parikh-Kraus-Wilczeck tunneling radiation or fragmentation. It is found that the EUP corrections make the entropy difference larger to encourage the black hole to radiate more greatly. We also show that the appearance of the EUP effects result in the black hole's division. The influence from global monopole and the revision of general relativity can also adjust the black hole evolution simultaneously, but ca…
We model the nonlinear saturation of the r-mode instability via three-mode couplings and the effects of the instability on the spin evolution of young neutron stars. We include one mode triplet consisting of the r-mode and two near resonant inertial modes that couple to it. We find that the spectrum of evolutions is more diverse than previously thought. The evolution of the star is dynamic and initially dominated by fast neutrino cooling. Nonlinear effects become important when the r-mode amplitude grows above its first parametric instability threshold. The balance between neutrino cooling and…
It is shown that there exists, in the field theory of gravitation, contrary to the General Theory of Relativity (GTR), a bound for admissible time slowing down by the gravitational field which excludes a possibility of unbounded compression of matter by the gravity forces.

Upcoming gravitational wave-experiments promise a window for discovering new physics in astronomy. Detection sensitivity of the broadband laser interferometric detectors LIGO/VIRGO may be enhanced by matched filtering with accurate wave-form templates. Where analytic methods break down, we have to resort to numerical relativity, often in Hamiltonian or various hyperbolic formulations. Well-posed numerical relativity requires consistency with the elliptic constraints of energy and momentum conservation. We explore this using a choice of gauge in the future and a dynamical gauge in the past. App…
An analytical scheme and a numerical method in order to study the effects of general relativity on the viscosity driven secular bar mode instability of rapidly rotating stars are presented. The approach consists in perturbing an axisymmetric and stationary configuration and studying its evolution by constructing a series of triaxial quasi-equilibrium configurations. These are obtained by solution of an approximate set of field equations where only the dominant non-axisymmetric terms are taken into account. The progress with respect to our former investigation consists in a higher relativistic …
We report the existence of a gravitational-wave-driven secular instability in neutron star binaries, acting on the equilibrium tide. The instability is similar to the classic Chandrasekhar-Friedman-Schutz (CFS) instability of normal modes and is active when the spin of the primary star exceeds the orbital frequency of the companion. Modeling the neutron star as a Newtonian n=1 polytrope, we calculate the instability time scale, which can be as low as a few seconds at small orbital separations but still larger than the inspiral time scale. The implications for orbital and spin evolution are als…
We consider generic linear perturbations of a nonbidiagonal class of static black-hole solutions in massive (bi)gravity. We show that the quasinormal spectrum of these solutions coincides with that of a Schwarzschild black hole in general relativity, thus proving that these solutions are mode stable. This is in contrast to the case of bidiagonal black-hole solutions which are affected by a radial instability. On the other hand, the full set of perturbation equations is generically richer than that of a Schwarzschild black hole in general relativity, and this affects the linear response of the …
Mach Principle presents the absolute universe. For example, when Einstein stood on the ground and relaxed, his arms fell down naturally. However, if he rotated his body then his arms were lifted up as the rotation was faster and faster. Mach principle is that the matter of the whole universe can affect local dynamic systems. That is, the matter of the whole universe sets up the local absolute reference frames. However, Einstein's general theory of relativity is against the absolute reference frames of Mach Principle.
Einstein's theory of general relativity models the physical universe using spacetimes which satisfy Einstein's gravitational field equations. To date, Einstein's theory has been enormously successful in modeling observed gravitational phenomena, both at the astrophysical and the cosmological levels. The collection of spacetime solutions of Einstein's equations which have been effectively used for modeling the physical universe is a very small subset of the full set of solutions. Among this larger set, there are many spacetimes in which strange phenomena related to time are present: There are s…
