In general relativity, the Kerr metric uniquely represents the geometry surrounding an isolated, rotating black hole. An identification of significant non-Kerr features in some astrophysical source would then provide a `smoking-gun' for the break-down of general relativity in the strong-field regime. On the other hand, Kerr black holes are common to many other theories of gravity, and thus a validation of the Kerr metric does not necessarily favour general relativity amongst all possibilities. The nature of gravitational perturbations will however differ between different theories of gravity. Future precision tests involving gravitational waves from oscillating black holes, such as identifications of the quasi-normal mode spectrum from ring-down, will thus be able to probe the underlying theory, even if the object is Kerr. Here, we write down the equations governing metric perturbations of a Kerr black hole in $f(R)$ gravity in a form that is more conducive to numerical study.
We perform the first study of the oscillation frequencies of rapidly rotating neutron stars in alternative theories of gravity, focusing mainly on the fundamental $f$-modes. We concentrated on a particular class of alternative theories - the (massive) scalar-tensor theories. The generalization to rapid rotation is important because on one hand the rapid rotation can magnify the deviations from general relativity compared to the static case and on the other hand some of the most efficient emitters of gravitational radiation, such as the binary neutron star merger remnants, are supposed to be ro…
Neutrino spin and flavour oscillation in curved spacetime have been studied for the most general static spherically symmetric configuration. Using the symmetry properties we have derived spin oscillation frequency for neutrino moving along a geodesic or in a circular orbit. Starting from the expression of neutrino spin oscillation frequency we have shown that even in this general context, in high energy limit the spin oscillation frequency for neutrino moving along circular orbit vanishes. This finally lends itself to non-zero probability of neutrino helicity flip. While for neutrino flavour o…
We study neutrino oscillations within the framework of extended theories of gravity. Based on the covariant reformulation of Pontecorvo formalism, we evaluate the oscillation probability of neutrinos propagating in static spacetimes described by gravitational actions quadratic in the curvature invariants. Calculations are carried out in the two-flavor approximation, for oscillations both in vacuum and matter. It is shown that the neutrino phase is sensitive to the violation of the strong equivalence principle. By way of illustration, we specialize our analysis to various extended models of gra…
Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in the power spectrum of black holes are unique observational probes to the background spacetime since they can be directly related to the timescales associated with the motion of matter orbiting in the vicinity of the black hole horizon. In this regard, the high frequency QPOs (HFQPOs) are particularly interesting as they occur in commensurable pairs, the most common ratio being the 3:2 twin peak QPOs. The theoretical models which aim to explain these QPOs express the observed frequencies in terms of the epicyclic motion of test particles in a given…
In this paper we investigate graviton-photon oscillation in the presence of an external magnetic field in alternative theories of gravity. Whereas the effect of an effective refractive index for the electromagnetic radiation was already considered in the literature, we develop the first approach to take into account the effect of the modification of the predictions for gravitational waves in alternative theories of gravity in the phenomenon of graviton-photon mixing.

Recently, it has been shown that an infinite succession of classical signature changes (''signature oscillations'') can compactify and stabilize internal dimensions, and simultaneously leads, after a coarse graining type of average procedure, to an effective (''physical'') space-time geometry displaying the usual Lorentzian metric signature. Here, we consider a minimally coupled scalar field on such an oscillating background and study its effective dynamics. It turns out that the resulting field equation in four dimensions contains a coupling to some non-metric structure, the imprint of the ''…
In low-energy effective string theory, $α'$ corrections involve the coupling of the dilaton field to Gauss-Bonnet term. We assume that the dilaton potential is fine tuned so that the dilaton field may oscillate rapidly for a while around the minimum of its potential but the inflation background is not affected. By numerical method, we find that if the dilaton starts to oscillate at the time of about $\sim 60$ e-folds before the end of inflation, $α^\prime$ correction may bring unusual oscillations to the inflationary gravitational wave spectrum, which might be measurably imprinted in the CMB B…
By using the relativistic precession model, we have studied frequencies of quasi-periodic oscillations in the spacetime of a disformal Kerr black hole. This black hole owns an extra disformal parameter and belongs to a class of non-stealth solutions in quadratic degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories. Our result shows that only the periastron precession frequency is related to the disformal parameter, while the azimuthal frequency and the nodal precession frequency are identical with those in the usual Kerr black hole in general relativity. Combing with the observation data of …
A pedagogical introduction to some of the main ideas and results of field theories on quantized spacetimes is presented, with emphasis on what such field theories may teach us about the problem of quantizing gravity. We examine to what extent noncommutative gauge theories may be regarded as gauge theories of gravity. UV/IR mixing is explained in detail and we describe its relations to renormalization, to gravitational dynamics, and to deformed dispersion relations in models of quantum spacetime of interest in string theory and in doubly special relativity. We also discuss some potential experi…
The neutrino flavor oscillation is studied in some classes of alternative gravity theories in a plane specified by $θ=π/2$, exploiting the spherical symmetry and general equations for oscillation phases are given. We first calculate the phase in a general static spherically symmetric model and then we discuss some spherically symmetric solutions in alternative gravity theories. Among them we discuss the effect of cosmological term in Schwarzschild-(anti)de Sitter solution, which is the vacuum solution in $F(R)$ theory, the effect of charge and Gauss-Bonnet coupling parameter on the oscillation…
Explaining the late time acceleration is one of the most challenging tasks for theoretical physicists today. Infra-red modification of Einstein's general theory of relativity (GR) is a possible route to model late time acceleration. In this regard, vector-tensor theory as a part of gravitational interactions on large cosmological scales, has been proposed recently. This involves generalization of massive Proca lagrangian in curved space time. Black hole solutions in such theories have also been constructed. In this paper, we study different astrophysical signatures of such black holes. We firs…
The response of inertial particle detectors coupled to a scalar field satisfying nonlocal dynamics described by nonanalytic functions of the d'Alembertian operator $\Box$ is studied. We show that spontaneous emission processes of a low energy particle detector are very sensitive to high-energy nonlocality scales. This allows us to suggest a nuclear physics experiment ($\sim$ MeV energy scales) that outperforms the sensitivity of LHC experiments by many orders of magnitude. This may have implications for the falsifiability of theoretical proposals of quantum gravity.

We consider background dynamics of generalized Galileon theories in the context of inflation, where gravity and inflaton are non-minimally coupled to each other. In the inflaton oscillation regime, the Hubble parameter and energy density oscillate violently in many cases, in contrast to the Einstein gravity with minimally coupled inflaton. However, we find that there is an adiabatic invariant in the inflaton oscillation regime in any generalized Galileon theory. This adiabatic invariant is useful in estimating the expansion law of the universe and also the particle production rate due to the o…
Scalar-tensor theories are well studied extensions of general relativity that offer deviations which are yet within observational boundaries. We present the time evolution equations governing the perturbations of a nonrotating scalarized neutron star, including a dynamic spacetime as well as scalar field within the framework of such scalar-tensor theories. We employ a theory that allows for a massive scalar field or a self-interaction term and we study the impact of those parameters on the non-axisymmetric $f$-mode. The time evolution approach allows for a comparatively simple implementation o…
Standard formulation is unable to distinguish between the (+++-) and (---+) spacetime metric signatures. However, the Clifford algebras associated with each are inequivalent, R(4) in the first case (real 4 by 4 matrices), H(2) in the latter (quaternionic 2 by 2). Multivector reformulations of Dirac theory by various authors look quite inequivalent pending the algebra assumed. It is not clear if this is mere artifact, or if there is a right/wrong choice as to which one describes reality. However, recently it has been shown that one can map from one signature to the other using a "tilt transform…
Neutrino physics in one of the most active fields of research with important implications for particle physics, cosmology and astrophysics. On the other hand, motivated by some theories including string theory, formulation of physical theories in more than four space-time dimensions has been the subject of increasing attention in recent years. Interaction of neutrinos with gravitational fields is one of the interesting phenomena which can lead to transition between different helicity states (spin oscillations). We study neutrino spin oscillations in Schwarzschild and RN backgrounds in higher d…
We consider the dynamics of the open string tachyon condensation in a framework of the cubic fermionic String Field Theory including a non-minimal coupling with closed string massless modes, the graviton and the dilaton. Coupling of the open string tachyon and the dilaton is motivated by the open String Field Theory in a linear dilaton background and the flat space-time. We note that the dilaton gravity provides several restrictions on the tachyon condensation and show explicitly that the influence of the dilaton on the tachyon condensation is essential and provides a significant effect: oscil…
In flat spacetime, the vacuum neutrino flavour oscillations are known to be sensitive only to the difference between the squared masses, and not to the individual masses, of neutrinos. In this work, we show that the lensing of neutrinos induced by a gravitational source substantially modifies this standard picture and it gives rise to a novel contribution through which the oscillation probabilities also depend on the individual neutrino masses. A gravitating mass located between a source and a detector deflects the neutrinos in their journey, and at a detection point, neutrinos arriving throug…
Superfluid condensation of neutrinos of cosmological origin at a low enough temperature can provide simple and elegant solution to the problems of neutrino oscillations and the accelerated expansion of the universe. It would give rise to a late time cosmological constant of small magnitude and also generate tiny Majorana masses for the neutrinos as observed from their flavor oscillations. We show that carefully prepared beta decay experiments in the laboratory would carry signatures of such a condensation, and thus, it would be possible to either establish or rule out neutrino condensation of …
The formulation of gravity and M-theories as very-extended Kac-Moody invariant theories encompasses, for each very-extended algebra G+++, two distinct actions invariant under the overextended Kac-Moody subalgebra G++. The first carries a Euclidean signature and is the generalisation to G++ of the E10-invariant action proposed in the context of M-theory and cosmological billiards. The second action carries various Lorentzian signatures revealed through various equivalent formulations related by Weyl transformations of fields. It admits exact solutions, identical to those of the maximally oxidis…
It is shown that F(R)-modified gravitational theories lead to curvature oscillations in astrophysical systems with rising energy density. The frequency and the amplitude of such oscillations could be very high and would lead to noticeable production of energetic cosmic ray particles.
