We implement advanced Riemann solvers HLLC and HLLD \cite{Mignone:2005ft,MUB:2009} together with an advanced constrained transport scheme \cite{Gardiner:2007nc} in a numerical-relativity neutrino-radiation magnetohydrodynamics code. We validate our implementation by performing a series of one- and multi-dimensional test problems for relativistic hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics in both Minkowski spacetime and a static black hole spacetime. We find that the numerical solutions with the advanced Riemann solvers are more accurate than those with the HLLE solver \cite{DelZanna:2002rv}, which was originally implemented in our code. As an application to numerical relativity, we simulate an asymmetric binary neutron star merger leading to a short-lived massive neutron star both with and without magnetic fields. We find that the lifetime of the rotating massive neutron star formed after the merger and also the amount of the tidally-driven dynamical ejecta are overestimated when we employ the diffusive HLLE solver. We also find that the magnetorotational instability is less resolved when we employ the HLLE solver because of the solver's large numerical diffusivity. This causes a spurious enhancement both of magnetic winding resulting from large scale poloidal magnetic fields, and also of the energy of the outflow induced by magnetic pressure.
A radiation-magnetohydrodynamic simulation for the black hole-torus system is performed in the framework of full general relativity for the first time. A truncated moment formalism is employed for a general relativistic neutrino radiation transport. Several systems in which the black hole mass is $M_{\rm BH}=3$ or $6M_{\odot}$, the black hole spin is zero, and the torus mass is $\approx 0.14$--$0.38M_{\odot}$ are evolved as models of the remnant formed after the merger of binary neutron stars or black hole-neutron star binaries. The equation of state and microphysics for the high-density and h…
We have built a code to obtain the exact solutions of Riemann problems in ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) for an arbitrary initial condition. The code can handle not only regular waves but also switch-on/off rarefactions and all types of non-regular shocks: intermediate shocks and switch-on/off shocks. Furthermore, the initial conditions with vanishing normal or transverse magnetic fields can be handled although the code is partly based on the algorithm proposed by Torrilhon (2002) (Torrilhon 2002 Exact Solver and Uniqueness Condition for Riemann problems of Ideal Magnetohydrodynamics. Resear…
We present a new approximate Riemann solver for the augmented system of equations of resistive relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RRMHD) that belongs to the family of Harten-Lax-van Leer contact wave (HLLC) solvers. In HLLC solvers, the solution is approximated by two constant states flanked by two shocks separated by a contact wave. The accuracy of the new approximate solver is calibrated through one- and two-dimensional test problems.
We analyze the cosmic-ray magnetohydrodynamic (CR MHD) equations to improve the numerical simulations. We propose to solve them in the fully conservation form, which is equivalent to the conventional CR MHD equations. In the fully conservation form, the CR energy equation is replaced with the CR "number" conservation, where the CR number density is defined as the three fourths power of the CR energy density. The former contains an extra source term, while latter does not. An approximate Riemann solver is derived from the CR MHD equations in the fully conservation form. Based on the analysis, w…
Adopting our new method for matching general relativistic, ideal magnetohydrodynamics to its force-free limit, we perform the first systematic simulations of force-free pulsar magnetospheres in general relativity. We endow the neutron star with a general relativistic dipole magnetic field, model the interior with ideal magnetohydrodynamics, and adopt force-free electrodynamics in the exterior. Comparing the spin-down luminosity to its corresponding Minkowski value, we find that general relativistic effects give rise to a modest enhancement: the maximum enhancement for $n=1$ polytropes is $\sim…
In a recent paper (Antón et al. 2010) we have derived sets of right and left eigenvectors of the Jacobians of the relativistic MHD equations, which are regular and span a complete basis in any physical state including degenerate ones. We present a summary of the main steps followed in the above derivation and the numerical experiments carried out with the linearized (Roe-type) Riemann solver we have developed, and some note on the (non-)convex character of the relativistic MHD equations.
Binary neutron star (NSNS) mergers can be sources of gravitational waves coincident with electromagnetic counterpart emission. To solidify their role as multimessenger sources, we present fully 3D, general relativistic, magnetohydrodynamic simulations of spinning NSNSs initially on quasicircular orbits that merge and undergo delayed collapse to a black hole (BH). The NSNSs consist of two identical stars modeled as $Γ=2$ polytropes with spin $χ_{NS}= 0.36$ aligned along the direction of the total orbital angular momentum $L$. Each star is initially threaded by a dynamical unimportant interior d…
The relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) set of equations has recently seen increased use in astrophysical computations. Even so, RMHD codes remain fragile. The reconstruction can sometimes yield superluminal velocities in certain parts of the mesh. In this paper we present a reconstruction strategy that overcomes this problem by making a single conservative to primitive transformation per cell followed by higher order WENO reconstruction on a carefully chosen set of primitives that guarantee subluminal reconstruction of the flow variables. For temporal evolution via a predictor step we al…
Radiative transfer plays a major role in high-energy astrophysics. In multiple scenarios and in a broad range of energy scales, the coupling between matter and radiation is essential to understand the interplay between theory, observations and numerical simulations. In this paper, we present a novel scheme for solving the equations of radiation relativistic magnetohydrodynamics within the parallel code Lóstrego. These equations, which are formulated taking successive moments of the Boltzmann radiative transfer equation, are solved under the gray-body approximation and the M1 closure using an I…
We perform the first magnetohydrodynamic simulations in full general relativity of self-consistent rotating neutron stars (NSs) with ultrastrong mixed poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields. The initial uniformly rotating NS models are computed assuming perfect conductivity, stationarity, and axisymmetry. Although the specific geometry of the mixed field configuration can delay or accelerate the development of various instabilities known from analytic perturbative studies, all our models finally succumb to them. Differential rotation is developed spontaneously in the cores of our magnetars whic…
We have built a code to numerically solve the Riemann problem in ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) for an arbitrary initial condition to investigate a variety of solutions more thoroughly. The code can handle not only regular solutions, in which no intermediate shocks are involved, but also all types of non-regular solutions if any. As a first application, we explored the neighborhood of the initial condition that was first picked up by Brio & Wu (1988) and has been frequently employed in the literature as a standard problem to validate numerical codes. Contrary to the conventional wisdom that …
We construct magnetized stars composed of a fluid stably stratified by entropy gradients in the framework of general relativity, assuming ideal magnetohydrodynamics and employing a barotropic equation of state. We first revisit basic equations for describing stably-stratified stationary axisymmetric stars containing both poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields. As sample models, the magnetized stars considered by Ioka and Sasaki (2004), inside which the magnetic fields are confined, are modified to the ones stably stratified. The magnetized stars newly constructed in this study are believed to b…
In this paper we review and discuss some of the intriguing properties of the Galactic Center supermassive black hole candidate Sgr A*. Of all possible black hole sources, the event horizon of Sgr A*, subtends the largest angular scale on the sky. It is therefore a prime candidate to study and image plasma processes in strong gravity and it even allows imaging of the shadow cast by the event horizon. Recent mm-wave VLBI and radio timing observations as well as numerical GRMHD simulations now have provided several breakthroughs that put Sgr A* back into the focus. Firstly, VLBI observations have…
We describe a new Godunov algorithm for relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) that combines a simple, unsplit second order accurate integrator with the constrained transport (CT) method for enforcing the solenoidal constraint on the magnetic field. A variety of approximate Riemann solvers are implemented to compute the fluxes of the conserved variables. The methods are tested with a comprehensive suite of multidimensional problems. These tests have helped us develop a hierarchy of correction steps that are applied when the integration algorithm predicts unphysical states due to errors in th…
We construct the stably stratified magnetized stars within the framework of general relativity. The effects of magnetic fields on the structure of the star and spacetime are treated as perturbations of non-magnetized stars. By assuming ideal magnetohydrodynamics and employing one-parameter equations of state, we derive basic equations for describing stationary and axisymmetric stably stratified stars containing magnetic fields whose toroidal components are much larger than the poloidal ones. A number of the polytropic models are numerically calculated to investigate basic properties of the eff…
We obtain renormalized sets of right and left eigenvectors of the flux vector Jacobians of the relativistic MHD equations, which are regular and span a complete basis in any physical state including degenerate ones. The renormalization procedure relies on the characterization of the degeneracy types in terms of the normal and tangential components of the magnetic field to the wavefront in the fluid rest frame. Proper expressions of the renormalized eigenvectors in conserved variables are obtained through the corresponding matrix transformations. Our work completes previous analysis that presen…
Rotating relativistic stars have been studied extensively in recent years, both theoretically and observationally, because of the information they might yield about the equation of state of matter at extremely high densities and because they are considered to be promising sources of gravitational waves. The latest theoretical understanding of rotating stars in relativity is reviewed in this updated article. The sections on equilibrium properties and on nonaxisymmetric oscillations and instabilities in $f$-modes and $r$-modes have been updated. Several new sections have been added on equilibria…

Long-term neutrino-radiation resistive-magnetohydrodynamics simulations in full general relativity are performed for a system composed of a massive neutron star and a torus formed as a remnant of binary neutron star mergers. The simulation is performed in axial symmetry incorporating a mean-field dynamo term for a hypothetical amplification of the magnetic-field strength. We first calibrate the mean-field dynamo parameters by comparing the results for the evolution of black hole-disk systems with viscous hydrodynamics results. We then perform simulations for the system of a remnant massive neu…
We describe the implementation of sophisticated numerical techniques for general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations in the Athena++ code framework. Improvements over many existing codes include the use of advanced Riemann solvers and of staggered-mesh constrained transport. Combined with considerations for computational performance and parallel scalability, these allow us to investigate black hole accretion flows with unprecedented accuracy. The capability of the code is demonstrated by exploring magnetically arrested disks.
We present a numerical method which evolves a two-temperature, magnetized, radiative, accretion flow around a black hole, within the framework of general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamics. As implemented in the code KORAL, the gas consists of two sub-components -- ions and electrons -- which share the same dynamics but experience independent, relativistically consistent, thermodynamical evolution. The electrons and ions are heated independently according to a standard prescription from the literature for magnetohydrodynamical turbulent dissipation. Energy exchange between the particl…
We perform magnetohydrodynamic simulations of accreting, equal-mass binary black holes in full general relativity focusing on the effect of spin and minidisks on the accretion rate and Poynting luminosity variability. We report on the structure of the minidisks and periodicities in the mass of the minidisks, mass accretion rates, and Poynting luminosity. The accretion rate exhibits a quasi-periodic behavior related to the orbital frequency of the binary in all systems that we study, but the amplitude of this modulation is dependent on the existence of persistent minidisks. In particular, syste…
This work presents the publicly available moving-mesh magnetohydrodynamics code DISCO. DISCO is efficient and accurate at evolving orbital fluid motion in two and three dimensions, especially at high Mach number. DISCO employs a moving-mesh approach utilizing a dynamic cylindrical mesh that can shear azimuthally to follow the orbital motion of the gas. The moving mesh removes diffusive advection errors and allows for longer timesteps than a static grid. Magnetohydrodynamics is implemented in DISCO using an HLLD Riemann solver and a novel constrained transport scheme which is compatible with th…
We perform high-resolution magnetohydrodynamics simulations of binary neutron star mergers in numerical relativity on the Japanese supercomputer K. The neutron stars and merger remnants are covered by a grid spacing of 70\,m, which yields the highest-resolution results among those derived so far. By an in-depth resolution study, we clarify several amplification mechanisms of magnetic fields during the binary neutron star merger for the first time. First, the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability developed in the shear layer at the onset of the merger significantly amplifies the magnetic fields. A hyper…
We compare a particular selection of approximate solutions of the Riemann problem in the context of ideal relativistic magnetohydrodynamics. In particular, we focus on Riemann solvers not requiring a full eigenvector structure. Such solvers recover the solution of the Riemann problem by solving a simplified or reduced set of jump conditions, whose level of complexity depends on the intermediate modes that are included. Five different approaches - namely the HLL, HLLC, HLLD, HLLEM and GFORCE schemes - are compared in terms of accuracy and robustness against one- and multi-dimensional standard n…
We report results of a high-resolution numerical-relativity simulation for the merger of black hole-magnetized neutron star binaries on Japanese supercomputer "K". We focus on a binary that is subject to tidal disruption and subsequent formation of a massive accretion torus. We find the launch of thermally driven torus wind, subsequent formation of a funnel wall above the torus and a magnetosphere with collimated poloidal magnetic field, and high Blandford-Znajek luminosity. We show for the first time this picture in a self-consistent simulation. The turbulence-like motion induced by the non-a…
When magnetic energy density is much larger than that of matter, as in pulsar/black hole magnetospheres, the medium becomes force-free and we need relativity to describe it. As in non-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), Alfvénic MHD turbulence in the relativistic limit can be described by interactions of counter-traveling wave packets. In this paper we numerically study strong imbalanced MHD turbulence in such environments. Here, imbalanced turbulence means the waves traveling in one direction (dominant waves) have higher amplitudes than the opposite-traveling waves (sub-dominant waves). …
We present a new general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) code integrated into the Athena++ framework. Improving upon the techniques used in most GRMHD codes, ours allows the use of advanced, less diffusive Riemann solvers, in particular HLLC and HLLD. We also employ a staggered-mesh constrained transport algorithm suited for curvilinear coordinate systems in order to maintain the divergence-free constraint of the magnetic field. Our code is designed to work with arbitrary stationary spacetimes in one, two, or three dimensions, and we demonstrate its reliability in a number of tests. …
We present a new magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation code with the aim of providing accurate numerical solutions to astrophysical phenomena where discontinuities, shock waves, and turbulence are inherently important. The code implements the HLLD approximate Riemann solver, the fifth-order-monotonicity-preserving interpolation (MP5) scheme, and the hyperbolic divergence cleaning method for a magnetic field. This choice of schemes significantly improved numerical accuracy and stability, and saved computational costs in multidimensional problems. Numerical tests of one- and two-dimensional probl…
