Entangled photon pairs have been promised to deliver a substantial quantum advantage for two-photon absorption spectroscopy. However, recent work has challenged the previously reported magnitude of quantum enhancement in two-photon absorption. Here, we present an experimental comparison of sum-frequency generation and molecular absorption, each driven by isolated photon pairs. We establish an upper bound on the enhancement for entangled-two-photon absorption in Rhodamine-6G, which lies well below previously reported values.
We show that the collapse of the entangled quantum state makes the entropy increase in an isolated system. The second law of thermodynamics is thus proven in its most general form.
The Rényi entanglement entropy is calculated exactly for mode-partitioned isolated systems such as the two-mode squeezed state and the multi-mode Silbey-Harris polaron ansatz state. Effective thermodynamic descriptions of the correlated partitions are constructed to present quantum information theory concepts in the language of thermodynamics. Boltzmann weights are obtained from the entanglement spectrum by deriving the exact relationship between an effective temperature and the physical entanglement parameters. The partition function of the resulting effective thermal theory can be obtained d…
A significant limitation of practical quantum key distribution (QKD) setups is currently their limited operational range. It has recently been emphasized (X. Ma, C.-H. F. Fung, and H.-K. Lo., Phys. Rev. A, 76:012307, 2007) that entanglement-based QKD systems can tolerate higher channel losses than systems based on weak coherent laser pulses (WCP), in particular when the source is located symmetrically between the two communicating parties, Alice and Bob. In the work presented here, we experimentally study this important advantage by implementing different entanglement-based QKD setups on a 144…
We study the feasibility of nonlocally compensating for polarization mode dispersion (PMD), when polarization entangled photons are distributed in fiber-optic channels. We quantify the effectiveness of nonlocal compensation while taking into account the possibility that entanglement is generated through the use of a pulsed optical pump signal.
We propose a novel approach for efficient generation of entangled photons, based on Cooper-pair luminescence in semiconductors, which does not require isolated emitters such as single atoms or quantum dots. We show that in bulk materials, electron-spin entanglement in Cooper pairs should not be expected to be translated into pure entangled photons despite the selection rules, due to mixing introduced by light-hole heavy-hole degeneracy. Semiconductor quantum wells, however, remove this degeneracy, allowing efficient photon entanglement generation in simple electrically-driven structures, takin…
We propose two experimental schemes that can produce an arbitrary photon-number entangled state (PNES) in a finite dimension. This class of entangled states naturally includes non-Gaussian continuous-variable (CV) states that may provide some practical advantages over the Gaussian counterparts (two-mode squeezed states). We particularly compare the entanglement characteristics of the Gaussian and the non-Gaussian states in view of the degree of entanglement and the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlation, and further discuss their applications to the CV teleportation and the nonlocality test. The …
Entanglement distillation aims at preparing highly entangled states out of a supply of weakly entangled pairs, using local devices and classical communication only. In this note we discuss the experimentally feasible schemes for optical continuous-variable entanglement distillation that have been presented in [D.E. Browne, J. Eisert, S. Scheel, and M.B. Plenio, Phys. Rev. A 67, 062320 (2003)] and [J. Eisert, D.E. Browne, S. Scheel, and M.B. Plenio, Annals of Physics (NY) 311, 431 (2004)]. We emphasize their versatility in particular with regards to the detection process and discuss the merits …
A method for exploring photon-number entangled states with weak nonlinearities is described. We show that it is possible to create and detect such entanglement at various scales, ranging from microscopic to macroscopic systems. In the present architecture, we suggest that the maximal phase shift induced in the process of interaction between photons is proportional to photon numbers. Also, in the absence of decoherence we analyze maximum error probability and show its feasibility with current technology.
We propose and analyze a new method to produce single and entangled photons which does not require cavities. It relies on the collective enhancement of light emission as a consequence of the presence of entanglement in atomic ensembles. Light emission is triggered by a laser pulse, and therefore our scheme is deterministic. Furthermore, it allows one to produce a variety of photonic entangled states by first preparing certain atomic states using simple sequences of quantum gates. We analyze the feasibility of our scheme, and particularize it to: ions in linear traps, atoms in optical lattices,…
We propose a potential scheme to generate entangled photons by manipulating trapped ions embedded in two-mode microcavities, respectively, assisted by a magnetic field gradient. By means of the spin-spin coupling due to the magnetic field gradient and the Coulomb repulsion between the ions, we show how to efficiently generate entangled photons by detecting the internal states of the trapped ions. We emphasize that our scheme is advantageous to create complete sets of entangled multi-photon states. The requirement and the experimental feasibility of our proposal are discussed in detail.
Two entangled two-level Unruh-DeWitt detectors, which are in rest, spontaneously loose entanglement when at least any one of them is not isolated from the environment quantum fields. For eternal interaction between the detectors and environment, the spontaneous emission from the detectors' exited states and vacuum fluctuations of field influence this negative effect. Consequently, it suggests that two entangled qubits become less communicated during their free-fall towards the black hole horizon.

We propose a conditional scheme to generate entangled two-photons generalized binomial states inside two separate single-mode high-Q cavities. This scheme requires that the two cavities are initially prepared in entangled one-photon generalized binomial states and exploits the passage of two appropriately prepared two-level atoms one in each cavity. The measurement of the ground state of both atoms is finally required when they exit the cavities. We also give a brief evaluation of the experimental feasibility of the scheme.
All information in quantum systems is, notwithstanding Bell's theorem, localised. Measuring or otherwise interacting with a quantum system S has no effect on distant systems from which S is dynamically isolated, even if they are entangled with S. Using the Heisenberg picture to analyse quantum information processing makes this locality explicit, and reveals that under some circumstances (in particular, in Einstein-Podolski-Rosen experiments and in quantum teleportation) quantum information is transmitted through 'classical' (i.e. decoherent) information channels.
We present a numerical method for solving the separability problem of Gaussian quantum states in continuous-variable quantum systems. We show that the separability problem can be cast as an equivalent problem of determining the feasibility of a set of linear matrix inequalities. Thus, it can be efficiently solved using existent numerical solvers. We apply this method to the identification of bound entangled Gaussian states. We show that the proposed method can be used to identify bound entangled Gaussian states that could be simple enough to be producible in quantum optics.
We study the feasibility of extracting a pure entangled state of non-complementary, and potentially well separated, regions of a quantum many-body system. It is shown that this can indeed be accomplished in non-equilibrium scenarios as well as the ground state of the considered spin chain models when one locally measures observables such as magnetization in separated blocks of spins. A general procedure is presented, which can search for the optimal way to extract a pure entangled state through local projections. Our results indicate a connection of the projective extraction of entanglement to…
We establish a security proof of frequency-time coding quantum key distribution (FT-QKD) protocol by showing its connection to the squeezed state quantum key distribution protocol, which has been proven to be unconditionally secure. We also extend the prepare-and-measure FT-QKD protocol to an entanglement based FT-QKD protocol which is more appealing in practice. Furthermore, we propose a correlated frequency measurement scheme of entangled photon pair by using time resolving single photon detector. Simulation results show that the FT-QKD protocol can be implemented with today's technology.
We propose efficient schemes for converting three-photon, four-photon and five-photon GHZ state to a $W$ state or Dicke state, respectively with the nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) centers via single-photon input-output process and cross-Kerr nonlinearities. The total success probability can be improved by iterating the conversion process for the case of three-photon and five-photon while it does not require iteration for converting four-photon GHZ state to a $W$ state. The analysis of feasibility shows that our scheme is feasible for current experimental technology.
There is growing belief that the next decade will see the emergence of sensing devices based on the laws of quantum physics that outperform some of our current sensing devices. For example, in frequency estimation, using a probe prepared in an entangled state can, in principle, lead to a precision gain compared to a probe prepared in a separable state. Even in the presence of some forms of decoherence, it has been shown that the precision gain can increase with the number of probe particles $N$. Usually, however, the entangled and separable state preparation and readout times are assumed to be…
We studied the geometric quantum discord of a quantum system consisted of a Jaynes- Cummings atom, a cavity and an isolated atom. The analytical expressions of the geometric quantum discord for two atoms, every atom with cavity and the total system were obtained. We showed that the geometric quantum discord is not always zero when entanglement fall in death for two-atom subsystem; the geometric measurement of quantum discord of the total system developed periodically with a single frequency if the initial state of two atoms was not entangled, otherwise, it oscillates with two or four frequenci…
Suppose Alice and Bob try to transform an entangled state shared between them into another one by local operations and classical communications. Then in general a certain amount of entanglement contained in the initial state will decrease in the process of transformation. However, an interesting phenomenon called partial entanglement recovery shows that it is possible to recover some amount of entanglement by adding another entangled state and transforming the two entangled states collectively. In this paper we are mainly concerned with the feasibility of partial entanglement recovery. The bas…
Generation of polarization-entangled photons from quantum dots via the biexciton-exciton recombination cascade is complicated by the presence of an energy spitting between the intermediate excitonic levels, which severely degrades the quality of the entangled photon source. In this paper we present a novel, conceptually simple and straightforward proposal for restoring the entanglement of said source by applying a cascade of time-dependent operations on the emitted photons. This is in striking contrast with the techniques usually employed, that act on the quantum emitter itself in order to rem…
We propose a scheme for the remote preparation of entangled matter qubits in free space. For this purpose, a setup of two opposing parabolic mirrors is considered, each one with a single ion trapped at its focus. To get the required entanglement in this extreme multimode scenario, we take advantage of the spontaneous decay, which is usually considered as an apparent nuisance. Using semiclassical methods, we derive an efficient photon-path representation to deal with this problem. We also present a thorough examination of the experimental feasibility of the scheme. The vulnerabilities arising i…
In this work we propose the generation of a hybrid entangled resource (HER) and its further application in a quantum teleportation scheme from an experimentally feasible point of view. The source for HER preparation is based on the four wave mixing process in a photonic crystal fiber, from which one party of its output bipartite state is used to herald a single photon or a single photon added coherent state. From the heralded state and linear optics the HER is created. In the proposed teleportation protocol Bob uses the HER to teleport qubits with different spectral properties. Bob makes a Bel…
In this paper, correlation dynamics for two two-level atoms distributed in two isolated thermal cavities are studied, where the atomic state is initially prepared in a maximum entangled zero-and-two-excitation superposition state. We use two nonclasscal measures including geometric quantum discord via Schatten one norm and concurrence to analyze correlation dynamics for the two atoms when the two cavities have the same or different mean photon numbers. We find though correlation dynamics for these two measures have different features, they have the same characteristics in some particular time …
We discuss a cavity-QED scheme to deterministically generate entangled photons pairs by using a three-level atom successively coupled to two single longitudinal mode high-Q cavities presenting polarization degeneracy. The first cavity is prepared in a well defined Fock state with two photons with opposite circular polarizations while the second cavity remains in the vacuum state. A half-of-a-resonant Rabi oscillation in each cavity transfers one photon from the first to the second cavity, leaving the photons entangled in their polarization degree of freedom. The feasibility of this implementat…
We propose a novel entanglement-creation scheme in a multi-atom ensemble, named entanglement amplification, which converts unentangled states into entangled states and amplifies less-entangled ones to maximally-entangled Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states. The scheme starts with a multi-atom ensemble initialized in a coherent spin state. By shifting the energy of a particular Dicke state, we break the Hilbert space of the ensemble into two isolated subspaces to tear the coherent spin state into two components so that entanglement is introduced. After that, we utilize the isolated subspac…
Cross-phase modulation at the single-photon level has a wide variety of fundamental applications in quantum optics including the generation of macroscopic entangled states. Here we describe a practical method for producing a weak cross-phase modulation at the single-photon level using metastable xenon in a high finesse cavity. We estimate the achievable phase shift and give a brief update on the experimental progress towards its realization. A single-photon cross-phase modulation of approximately 20 milliradians is predicted by both a straightforward perturbation theory calculation and a numer…
In general, the state of a quantum system represented by density operator and its determination is a fundamental problem in quantum mechanics. A method of direct measurement of matrix element of density operator of a single two dimensional quantum system using weak measurement was theoretically proposed[Phys. Rev. Lett. 134, 070402(2012)] and experimentally demonstrated[Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 120401(2016)] by Lundeen et al. Furthermore, recently the Guo-Guang Can et al.[Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 150402(2019)] investigated the method of direct measurement of a nonlocal entangled quantum state. Howev…
We propose an experimental test of local hidden variable theories against quantum mechanics by measuring the polarization correlation of entangled vector meson pairs. In our study, the form of the polarization correlation probability is reproduced in a natural way by interpreting the two-body decay of the meson as a measurement of its polarization vector within the framework of quantum mechanics. This provides more detailed information on the quantum entanglement, thus a new Monte Carlo method to simulate the quantum correlation is introduced. We discuss the feasibility of carrying out such a …
Topological insulators combine insulating properties in the bulk with scattering-free transport along edges, supporting dissipationless unidirectional energy and information flow even in the presence of defects and disorder. The feasibility of engineering quantum Hamiltonians with photonic tools, combined with the availability of entangled photons, raises the intriguing possibility of employing topologically protected entangled states in optical quantum computing and information processing. However, while two-photon states built as a product of two topologically protected single-photon states …
We present a scheme for an integrated four-wave mixing source of narrow-band path-entangled photon pairs with efficient spatial pump self-rejection. The scheme is based on correlated loss in a system of waveguides in Kerr nonlinear media. We demonstrate that this setup allows for upwards of 100dB pump rejection, without additional filtering. The effect is reached by driving the symmetric collective mode that is strongly attenuated by an engineered dissipation, while photon pairs are born in the antisymmetric mode. A similar set-up can additionally be realized for generation of two-photon NOON …
Realizing long distance entanglement swapping with independent sources in the real-world condition is important for both future quantum network and fundamental study of quantum theory. Currently, demonstration over a few of tens kilometer underground optical fiber has been achieved. However, future applications demand entanglement swapping over longer distance with more complicated environment. We exploit two independent 1-GHz-clock sequential time-bin entangled photon-pair sources, develop several automatic stability controls, and successfully implement a field test of entanglement swapping o…
While two-photon absorption (TPA) and other forms of nonlinear interactions of molecules with isolated time-frequency-entangled photon pairs (EPP) have been predicted to display a variety of fascinating effects, their potential use in practical quantum-enhanced molecular spectroscopy requires close examination. This paper presents a detailed theoretical study of quantum-enhanced TPA by both photon-number correlations and spectral correlations, including an account of the deleterious effects of dispersion. While such correlations in EPP created by spontaneous parametric down conversion can incr…
We give a new class of security definitions for authentication in the quantum setting. These definitions capture and strengthen existing definitions of security against quantum adversaries for both classical message authentication codes (MACs) and well as full quantum state authentication schemes. The main feature of our definitions is that they precisely characterize the effective behavior of any adversary when the authentication protocol accepts, including correlations with the key. Our definitions readily yield a host of desirable properties and interesting consequences; for example, our se…
The generation and manipulation of entanglement between isolated particles has precipitated rapid progress in quantum information processing. Entanglement is also known to play an essential role in the optical properties of atomic ensembles, but fundamental effects in the controlled emission and absorption from small, well-defined numbers of entangled emitters in free space have remained unobserved. Here we present the control of the spontaneous emission rate of a single photon from a pair of distant, entangled atoms into a free-space optical mode. Changing the length of the optical path conne…
Quantum entanglement was termed "spooky action at a distance" in the well-known paper by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen. Entanglement is expected to be distributed over longer and longer distances in both practical applications and fundamental research into the principles of nature. Here, we present a proposal for distributing entangled photon pairs between the Earth and Moon using a Lagrangian point at a distance of 1.28 light seconds. One of the most fascinating features in this long-distance distribution of entanglement is that we can perform Bell test with human supply the random measuremen…
Quantum secure direct communication (QSDC) based on entanglement can directly transmit confidential information. However, the inability to simultaneously distinguish the four sets of encoded entangled states limits its practical application. Here, we explore a deterministic QSDC network based on time-energy entanglement and sum-frequency generation. 15 users are in a fully connected QSDC network, and the fidelity of the entangled state shared by any two users is greater than 97%. The results show that when any two users are performing QSDC over 40 kilometers of optical fiber, the fidelity of t…

One-time memories (OTM's) are simple, tamper-resistant cryptographic devices, which can be used to implement sophisticated functionalities such as one-time programs. Can one construct OTM's whose security follows from some physical principle? This is not possible in a fully-classical world, or in a fully-quantum world, but there is evidence that OTM's can be built using "isolated qubits" -- qubits that cannot be entangled, but can be accessed using adaptive sequences of single-qubit measurements. Here we present new constructions for OTM's using isolated qubits, which improve on previous work …
