Collisional energy loss of a fast particle in a medium is mostly due to the medium polarization by the electromagnetic fields of the particle. A small fraction of energy is carried away by the Cherenkov radiation. In chiral medium there is an additional contribution to the energy loss due to induction of the anomalous current proportional to the magnetic field. It causes the particle to lose energy mostly in the form of the \emph{chiral} Cherenkov radiation. We employ classical electrodynamics, adequate in a wide range of particle energies, to compute the collisional energy loss by a fast particle in a homogenous chiral plasma and apply the results to Quark-Gluon Plasma and a Weyl semimetal. In the later case photon spectrum is strongly enhanced in the ultraviolet and X-ray regions which makes it amenable to experimental investigation. Our main observation is that while the collisional energy loss in a non-chiral medium is a slow, at most logarithmic, function of energy $E$, the chiral Cherenkov radiation is proportional to $E^2$ when the recoil is neglected and to $E$ when it is taken into account.
We estimate the energy loss distribution and investigate the quenching of hadron spectra in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions due to the collisional energy loss of energetic partons from hard parton collisions in the initial stage.
We argue that in the measured $p_T$ domain of RHIC, collisional rather than the radiative energy loss is the dominant mechanism for jet quenching. Accordingly we calculate nuclear suppression factor for light hadrons by taking only the elastic energy loss in sharp contrast with the previous calculations where only the radiative loss are considered.
While experimental observations, such as the mass hierarchy effect, are attributed and analyzed within radiative models, their interpretation crucially depends on collisional energy loss contribution, which is often neglected in such analyses. To our knowledge, neither a (direct) simple relation between collisional energy loss and heavy quark mass is established, nor an observable that quantifies this effect. On the other hand, the upcoming high-luminosity measurements at RHIC and LHC will generate heavy flavor data with unprecedented precision, providing an opportunity to utilize high-pT heav…
We study the time evolution of a high-momentum gluon or quark propagating through an infinite, thermalized, partonic medium utilizing a Boltzmann equation approach. We calculate the collisional energy loss of the parton, study its temperature and flavor dependence as well as the the momentum broadening incurred through multiple interactions. Our transport calculations agree well with analytic calculations of collisional energy-loss where available, but offer the unique opportunity to address the medium response as well in a consistent fashion.
We calculate photons from jet plasma interaction in a collisional energy loss scenario. It is shown that the PHENIX photon data is well reproduced when photons from initial hard collisions are taken into account.
We calculate and compare bremsstrahlung and collisional energy loss of hard partons traversing a quark-gluon plasma. Our treatment of both processes is complete at leading order in the coupling and accounts for the probabilistic nature of the jet energy loss. We find that the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ for neutral $π^0$ production in heavy ion collisions is sensitive to the inclusion of collisional and radiative energy loss contributions while the averaged energy loss only slightly increases if collisional energy loss is included for parent parton energies $E\gg T$. These results are…
Collisional energy loss of heavy partons (charm and bottom quarks) has been determined within the framework of semi-classical transport theory implying Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) collisional kernel. Hot QCD medium effects have been incorporated while employing a quasi-particle description of the medium in terms of effective gluons, quarks and antiquarks with respective temperature dependent effective fugacities. The momentum dependence of the energy loss for charm and bottom quark has been investigated. It is observed that with the increase in momentum of the heavy quarks, the loss increases …
We compute the collisional energy loss of an {energetic} massive fermion crossing a chiral plasma at finite temperature characterized by an imbalance between the populations of left-handed and right-handed fermions. We find a new contribution to the energy loss which is proportional to the helicity of the test fermion and depends on the amount of chiral imbalance in the plasma. We then compute the difference between the energy loss of a fermion with the two opposite helicities, to assess whether this could be used to quantify the chiral imbalance in the plasma. We find that the leading contrib…
We compute the collisional energy loss for a heavy quark above the critical temperature in Quantum ChromoDynamics (QCD). We work in the semi Quark-Gluon Plasma, which assumes that this region is dominated by the non-trivial holonomy of the thermal Wilson line. Relative to the result to leading order in perturbation theory, at a fixed value of the coupling constant we generically we find that collisional energy loss is suppressed by powers of the Polyakov loop, l < 1. For small values of the loop, this suppression is linear for the scattering off of light quarks, and quadratic for the scatterin…
Considering the collisional energy loss rates of heavy quarks from hard light parton interactions the total energy loss of a charm quark for a static medium has been computed. For the energy range $E\sim (5-10)$ GeV of charm quark, it is found to be almost same order as that of radiative ones estimated to a first order opacity expansion. The collisional energy loss will become much more important for lower energy charm quarks and this feature could be very interesting for phenomenology of hadrons spectra. Using such collisional energy loss rates we estimate the momentum loss distribution emplo…
We calculate radiative and collisional energy loss of hard partons traversing the quark-gluon plasma created at RHIC and compare the respective size of these contributions. We employ the AMY formalism for radiative energy loss and include additionally energy loss by elastic collisions. Our treatment of both processes is complete at leading order in the coupling, and accounts for the probabilistic nature of jet energy loss. We find that a solution of the Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density distributions of partons is necessary for a complete calculation of the nuclear modificatio…
In this paper, we calculate the soft-collisional energy loss of heavy quarks traversing the viscous quark-gluon plasma including the effects of a finite relaxation time $τ_π$ on the energy loss. We find that the collisional energy loss depends appreciably on $τ_π$ . In particular, for typical values of the viscosity-to-entropy ratio, we show that the energy loss obtained using $τ_π$ = 0 can be $\sim$ 10$\%$ larger than the one obtained using $τ_π$ = 0. Moreover, we find that the energy loss obtained using the kinetic theory expression for $τ_π$ is much larger that the one obtained with the $τ_…
It is shown that to leading order the QCD collisional energy loss reads $dE/dx \sim α(m_D^2)T^2$. Compared to prevalent expressions, $dE^B/dx \sim α^2 T^2 \ln(ET/m_D^2)$, which could be considered adaptions of the (QED) Bethe-Bloch formula, the rectified result takes into account the running coupling, as dictated by renormalization. As one significant consequence, due to asymptotic freedom, the collisional energy loss becomes independent of the jet energy $E$. Some implications with regard to heavy ion collisions are pointed out.
We perform a comparison of the radiative and collisional parton energy losses in an expanding quark-gluon plasma. The radiative energy loss is calculated within the light-cone path integral approach. The collisional energy loss is calculated using the Bjorken method with an accurate treatment of the binary collision kinematics. Our numerical results demonstrate that for RHIC and LHC conditions the collisional energy loss is relatively small in comparison to the radiative one. We find an enhancement of the heavy quark radiative energy loss as compared to that of the light quarks at high energie…
We develop a transport approach for heavy quarks in a quark-gluon plasma, which is based on improved binary collision rates taking into account quantum statistics, the running of the QCD coupling and an effective screening mass adjusted to hard-thermal loop calculations. We quantify the effects of in-medium collisions by calculating the heavy flavor nuclear modification factor and the elliptic flow for RHIC energies, which are comparable to radiative effects. We also derive an analytic formula for the mean collisional energy loss of an energetic heavy quark in a streaming quark gluon plasma.
Following an argument by Kirzhnits we rederive an exact expression for the energy loss of a fast charged particle in a relativistic plasma using the quantum field theoretical language. We compare this result to perturbative calculations of the collisional energy loss of an energetic electron or muon in an electron-positron plasma and of an energetic parton in the quark-gluon plasma.
It was argued recently that loop corrections to tree-level amplitudes are essential in the discussion of the collisional energy loss of energetic partons in the hot quark gluon plasma: Instead of $dE_{\rm coll}^B/dx \sim α^2 T^2 \ln(ET/m_D^2)$, as first derived by Bjorken (assuming a constant $α$), the mean energy loss actually behaves as $dE_{\rm coll}/dx \sim α(m_D^2)T^2$. Here we calculate, within this resummation-improved framework, the probability distribution functions (`quenching weights') of the collisional energy loss. First results from a Monte Carlo implementation of this probabilis…
We extend our recently advanced model on collisional energy loss of heavy quarks in a quark gluon plasma (QGP) by including radiative energy loss. We discuss the approach and present first preliminary results. We show that present data on nuclear modification factor of non photonic single electrons hardly permit to distinguish between those 2 energy loss mechanisms.
We investigate the production rate for hard real photons and the collisional energy loss in the quark-gluon plasma away from chemical equilibrium. Applying the Hard-Thermal-Loop resummation scheme away from equilibrium, we can show that Landau damping provides dynamical screening for both fermion and boson exchange present in the two quantities.
Collisional parton energy loss is revisited within a simple model assuming incoherent elastic scattering of on-shell projectile partons on partonic constituents of the QGP with HTL screening. The thermal motion of plasma particles is carefully taken into account. Results on $dE/dx$ are found to be consistent with other authors. There is a significant discrepancy in the energy loss pattern for the cases with thermal motion on and off, which illustrates the importance of taking the kinematics into account exactly. The dependence on the mass of the partons forming the plasma is included in the ca…
We present an operator definition of the collisional energy and momentum loss suffered by an energetic charged particle in the presence of a medium. Our approach uses the energy-momentum tensor of the medium to evaluate the energy and momentum transfer rates. We apply this formalism to an energetic lepton or quark propagating in thermal electron-positron or quark-gluon plasmas, respectively. By using two different approaches to describe the energetic charged particle, an external current approach and a diagrammatic approach, we show explicitly that the operator method reproduces the known resu…
We compute the leading-order collisional energy loss of a heavy quark propagating through a quark-gluon plasma in which the quark and gluon distributions are anisotropic in momentum space. Following the calculation outlined for QED in an earlier work we indicate the differences encountered in QCD and their effect on the collisional energy loss results. For a 20 GeV bottom quark we show that momentum space anisotropies can result in the collisional heavy quark energy loss varying with the angle of propagation by up to 50%. For low velocity quarks we show that anisotropies result in energy gain …
Energy-loss studies of hard particle probes produced in heavy ion collisions have often been used to get information on the interactions within the medium of a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). However, with the study of in-medium energy-loss of individual particles alone, it remains still ambiguous, whether the occured decrease in particle energy is caused by predominantly radiative or collisional energy-loss mechanisms. Focusing on the in-medium energy-loss of hard jet-partons, we propose additional studies of the angular jet-structure as a means to further constrain the energy-loss mechanisms.
We suggest a new mechanism for the energy loss of fast heavy quarks in quark-gluon plasma. This mechanism is based on pion production caused by the anomalous chromomagnetic quark-gluon-pion interaction induced by strong topological fluctuations of the gluon fields represented by instantons. We found that this mechanism gives a considerable contribution to the collisional energy loss of a heavy quark in quark-gluon plasma, which shows a nontrivial role of nonperturbative phenomena in strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma.
It is shown that to leading order the collisional energy loss of an energetic parton in the hot quark gluon plasma reads $dE/dx \sim α(m_D^2)T^2$, where the scale of the coupling is determined by the (parametrically soft) Debye screening mass. Compared to previous expressions derived by Bjorken and other authors, $dE^B/dx \sim α^2 T^2 \ln(ET/m_D^2)$, the rectified result takes into account the running of the coupling, as dictated by quantum corrections beyond tree level. As one significant consequence, due to asymptotic freedom, the QCD collisional energy loss becomes independent of the jet en…

The suppression of hadron p_T spectra in high energy central heavy-ion collisions compared to proton-proton collisions, referred to as 'jet-quenching', is currently attributed to partonic energy loss in the hot medium created in the collision. The RHIC experiments show that at large enough p_T, hadron quenching is strong, and of similar magnitude for light and heavy flavours. This point is difficult to understand in a parton energy loss scenario, where the energy loss is believed to be dominantly radiative, and quantitatively different for light partons and heavy quarks: gluon radiation off a …
We calculate the nuclear modification factor for RHIC and LHC conditions accounting for the radiative and collisional parton energy loss with the running coupling constant. We find that the RHIC data can be explained both in the scenario with the chemically equilibrium quark-gluon plasma and purely gluonic plasma with slightly different thermal suppression of the coupling constant. The role of the parton energy gain due to gluon absorption is also investigated. Our results show that the energy gain gives negligible effect.
In the article by M. G. Mustafa published in Phys. Rev. C {\bf 72}, 014905 (2005) the author has estimated the total energy loss of a charm quark and quenching of hadron spectra due to the collisional energy loss of energetic partons in an expanding quark-gluon plasma employing Fokker-Planck equation. We wish to point out through this Comment that some of conceptual and numerical results of the said paper are unreliable. For the sake of clarity our discussion will focus on the massless case (although a few remarks on the $m\neq 0$ case are also made).
Heavy ion collisions at RHIC and at the LHC give access to the medium-induced suppression patterns of heavy-flavored single inclusive hadron spectra at high transverse momentum. This opens novel opportunities for a detailed characterization of the medium produced in the collision. In this note, we point out that the capacity of a QCD medium to absorb the recoil of a partonic projectile is an independent signature, which may differ for different media at the same density. In particular, while the mass hierarchy (i.e., the projectile mass dependence) of radiative energy loss depends solely on a …
We study the heavy quark evolution in a quark-gluon plasma medium within the framework of Langevin equation coupled to a (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model. We modify the current Langevin algorithm such that apart from quasi-elastic scattering, medium-induced radiative energy loss is incorporated as well by treating gluon radiation as an extra force term. We find a significant effect of gluon radiation on heavy quark energy loss at LHC energies. Our calculation provides a good description of the D meson suppression measured by ALICE experiment, and makes a prediction for B meson supp…
We study the collisional energy loss mechanism for particles produced off mass-shell in a finite size QCD medium. The off mass-shell effects introduced are to consider particles produced in wave packets instead of plane waves and the length scale associated to an in-medium particles' life-time. We show that these effects reduce the energy loss as compared to the case when the particles are described as freely propagating from the source. The reduction of the energy loss is stronger as this scale becomes of the order or smaller than the medium size. We discuss possible consequences of the resul…
In this study we evaluate the dynamical collisional energy loss of heavy quarks, their interaction rate as well as the different transport coefficients (drag and diffusion coefficients, $\hat{q}$, etc). We calculate these different quantities for i) perturbative partons (on-shell particles in the vacuum with fixed and running coupling) and ii) for dynamical quasi-particles (off-shell particles in the QGP medium at finite temperature $T$ with a running coupling in temperature as described by the dynamical quasi-particles model). We use the perturbative elastic $(q(g) Q \rightarrow q (g) Q)$ cro…
We study the effect of the magnetic field on the collisional energy loss of heavy quark (HQ) moving in a magnetized thermal partonic medium. This is investigated in the strong field approximation where the lowest Landau level (LLL) becomes relevant. We work in the limit $g\sqrt{eB}\ll T\ll \sqrt{eB}$ which is relevant for heavy ion collisions. Effects of the magnetic field are incorporated through the resummed gluon propagator in which the dominant contribution arises from the quark loop. We also take the approximation $\sqrt{eB}\ll M$, M being the HQ mass, so that the HQ is not Landau quantiz…
We study the collisional energy loss suffered by an energetic parton travelling the distance L in a high temperature quark-gluon plasma and initially produced in the medium. We find that the medium-induced collisional loss -Delta E(L) is strongly suppressed compared to previous estimates which assumed the collisional energy loss rate -dE/dx to be constant. The large L linear asymptotic behaviour of -Delta E(L) sets in only after a quite large retardation time. The suppression of -Delta E(L) is partly due to the fact that gluon bremsstrahlung arising from the initial acceleration of the energet…
We investigate the energy losses of $b$ and $c$ quarks at hard collisions with gluons and light quarks in quark-gluon plasma produced in central $Au + Au$ collisions at RHIC energy($\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV). As the coupling constant at hard collision in the perturbative QCD is limited by Landau pole at momenta $Q^{2} = Λ^{2}$, we use the analytic models of QCD, where the Landau pole is absent. We calculate the energy losses of $b$ and $c$ quarks in analytic model of QCD at $Q^{2} \ge Λ^{2}$. At calculations we use the effective quasiparticle model. We use at calculations of total nuclear modi…
We calculate the collisional energy loss of a muon of high energy $E$ in a hot QED plasma beyond logarithmic accuracy, i.e., we determine the constant terms of order O(1) in $-dE/dx \propto \ln{E}+ O(1)$. Considering first the $t$-channel contribution to $-dE/dx$, we show that the terms $\sim O(1)$ are sensitive to the full kinematic region for the momentum exchange $q$ in elastic scattering, including large values $q \sim O(E)$. We thus redress a previous calculation by Braaten and Thoma, which assumed $q << E$ and could not find the correct constant (in the large $E$ limit). The relevance of…
The comments raised in Ref. [1] by Mishra et al aim at two papers contained in Ref. [2]. We show that those comments on Ref. [2] pointed out by Mishra et al in Ref.[1] are not relevant and the concept used in Ref.[2] is consistent and in compliance with the classical approximation of the transport coefficients [3]. We would also like to note that most of the comments in Ref. [1] were meant for light quarks, but are not even appropriate for heavy quarks.
We study the dynamics of energy loss and flow of heavy quarks produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions within the framework of a Langevin equation coupled to a (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model that simulates the space-time evolution of the produced hot and dense QCD matter. The classical Langevin approach is improved such that, apart from quasi-elastic scatterings, radiative energy loss is incorporated by treating gluon radiation as an additional force term. The hadronization of emitted heavy quarks is simulated via a hybrid fragmentation plus recombination model. Our ca…
Angular structure of radiative and collisional energy losses of a hard parton jet propagating through dense QCD-matter is investigated. For small angular jet cone sizes, $θ_0 < 5^0$, the radiative energy loss is shown to dominate over the collisional energy loss due to final state elastic rescattering of the hard projectile on thermal particles in the medium. Due to coherent effects, the radiative energy loss decreases with increasing the angular size the jet. It becomes comparable with the collisional energy loss for $θ_0 > 5^0-10^0$.

We discuss the average collisional energy loss dE/dx of a heavy quark crossing a quark-gluon plasma, in the limit of high quark energy E >> M^2/T, where M is the quark mass and T >> M is the plasma temperature. In the fixed coupling approximation, at leading order dE/dx \propto α_s^2, with a coefficient which is logarithmically enhanced. The soft logarithm arising from t-channel scattering off thermal partons is well-known, but a collinear logarithm from u-channel exchange had previously been overlooked. We also determine the constant beyond those leading logarithms. We then generalize our cal…
We present the calculations of collisional and radiative energy loss of $B$ and $D$ mesons in the medium produced in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV. The nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ of $B$ and $D$ mesons including shadowing and energy loss are calculated and compared with the measured data. While the $D$ meson $R_{AA}$ can be described in terms of the radiative energy loss alone, both the collisional as well as radiative energy loss are required to explain the $B$ meson measurements.
The discovery of the jet quenching in central Au + Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy-ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory has provided clear evidence for the formation of strongly interacting dense matter. It has been predicted to occur due to the energy loss of high energy partons that propagate through the quark gluon plasma. In this paper we investigate the dependence of the parton energy loss due to elastic scatterings in a parton plasma on the value of the strong coupling and its running with the evolution of the system. We analyze different prescriptions for the QC…
The suppression of single jets at high transverse momenta in a quark-gluon plasma is studied at RHIC energies, and the additional information provided by a photon tag is included. The energy loss of hard jets traversing through the medium is evaluated in the AMY formalism, by consistently taking into account the contributions from radiative events and from elastic collisions at leading order in the coupling. The strongly-interacting medium in these collisions is modelled with (3+1)-dimensional ideal relativistic hydrodynamics. Putting these ingredients together with a complete set of photon-pr…
We study the production and evolution of charm and bottom quarks in hot partonic medium produced in heavy ion collisions. The heavy quarks loose energy in the medium which is reflected in the transverse momentum spectra of heavy mesons. The collisional energy loss of heavy quarks has been calculated using QCD calculations. The radiative energy loss is obtained using two models namely reaction operator formalism and generalized dead cone approach. The nuclear modification factors, $R_{AA}$ as a function of transverse momentum by including shadowing and energy loss are calculated for $D^{0}$ and…
We compute the energy loss of heavy quarkonia in high temperature QCD plasmas and investigate the energy loss effects on quarkonium suppression. Based on the effective vertex derived from the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude for quarkonium, the collisional and radiative energy loss are determined by quarkonium-gluon elastic scattering and the associated gluon-bremsstrahlung, respectively. In the energy regime $E<m_Υ^2/T$ the collisional energy loss is dominant over the radiative one, and the total energy loss increases with the plasma temperature and the initial energy of quarkonium. Our numerical ana…
The medium modifications in the properties of QCD cascades are considered. In particular, the changes in the intrajet rapidity distributions due to medium-induced decoherence, collisional losses of cascade gluons and those of final prehadrons are analyzed.
We present results for the evolution of the momentum distribution of a hard parton traversing a brick of quark-gluon plasma, considering both bremsstrahlung and collisional energy loss. The complete leading order transition rates are included. We find a significant modification of the evolving momentum distribution compared to results obtained by employing an approximate implementation of the collisional energy loss that uses the mean energy loss, together with momentum diffusion.
The partonic energy loss has been calculated taking both the hard and soft contributions for all the $2 \to 2$ processes, revealing the importance of the individual channels. Cancellation of the intermediate separation scale has been exhibited. Subtleties related to the identical final state partons have properly been taken into account. The estimated collisional loss is compared with its radiative counter part. We show that there exists a critical energy ($E_c$) below which the collisional loss is more than its radiative counterpart. In addition, we present closed form formulas for both the c…
The impact of momentum anisotropy on the heavy quark transport coefficients due to collisional and radiative processes in the QCD medium has been studied within the ambit of kinetic theory. Anisotropic aspects (momentum) are incorporated into the heavy quark dynamics through the non-equilibrium momentum distribution function of quarks, antiquarks, and gluons. These non-equilibrium distribution functions that encode the physics of momentum anisotropy and turbulent chromo-fields have been obtained by solving the ensemble-averaged diffusive Vlasov-Boltzmann equation. The momentum dependence of he…
We derive the expression for the collisional energy loss in two stream plasma induced by the fluctuating chromoelectric field. It is revealed that the main contribution here comes from the unstable modes which grow exponentially with time. A strong direction dependence of the energy loss has also been demonstrated.
