We calculate the nuclear modification factor for RHIC and LHC conditions accounting for the radiative and collisional parton energy loss with the running coupling constant. We find that the RHIC data can be explained both in the scenario with the chemically equilibrium quark-gluon plasma and purely gluonic plasma with slightly different thermal suppression of the coupling constant. The role of the parton energy gain due to gluon absorption is also investigated. Our results show that the energy gain gives negligible effect.
We estimate the energy loss distribution and investigate the quenching of hadron spectra in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions due to the collisional energy loss of energetic partons from hard parton collisions in the initial stage.
It was argued recently that loop corrections to tree-level amplitudes are essential in the discussion of the collisional energy loss of energetic partons in the hot quark gluon plasma: Instead of $dE_{\rm coll}^B/dx \sim α^2 T^2 \ln(ET/m_D^2)$, as first derived by Bjorken (assuming a constant $α$), the mean energy loss actually behaves as $dE_{\rm coll}/dx \sim α(m_D^2)T^2$. Here we calculate, within this resummation-improved framework, the probability distribution functions (`quenching weights') of the collisional energy loss. First results from a Monte Carlo implementation of this probabilis…
The suppression of hadron p_T spectra in high energy central heavy-ion collisions compared to proton-proton collisions, referred to as 'jet-quenching', is currently attributed to partonic energy loss in the hot medium created in the collision. The RHIC experiments show that at large enough p_T, hadron quenching is strong, and of similar magnitude for light and heavy flavours. This point is difficult to understand in a parton energy loss scenario, where the energy loss is believed to be dominantly radiative, and quantitatively different for light partons and heavy quarks: gluon radiation off a …
The most suitable way to study the jet quenching as a function of distance traversed is varying the impact parameter b of ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collision (initial energy density in nuclear overlapping zone is almost independent of b up to b R_A). It is shown that b-dependences of medium-induced radiative and collisional energy losses of a hard parton jet propagating through dense QCD-matter are very different. The experimental verification of this phenomenon could be performed for a jet with non-zero cone size basing on essential difference between angular distributions of collisio…
Angular structure of radiative and collisional energy losses of a hard parton jet propagating through dense QCD-matter is investigated. For small angular jet cone sizes, $θ_0 < 5^0$, the radiative energy loss is shown to dominate over the collisional energy loss due to final state elastic rescattering of the hard projectile on thermal particles in the medium. Due to coherent effects, the radiative energy loss decreases with increasing the angular size the jet. It becomes comparable with the collisional energy loss for $θ_0 > 5^0-10^0$.
The discovery of the jet quenching in central Au + Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy-ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory has provided clear evidence for the formation of strongly interacting dense matter. It has been predicted to occur due to the energy loss of high energy partons that propagate through the quark gluon plasma. In this paper we investigate the dependence of the parton energy loss due to elastic scatterings in a parton plasma on the value of the strong coupling and its running with the evolution of the system. We analyze different prescriptions for the QC…
Using the Fokker-Planck equation we have studied the drag co-efficient $A(t)$ and the consequent shift $Δp_\perp (L)$ in the transverse momentum due to collisional energy loss of energetic partons while passing through a chemically equilibrating quark-gluon plasma. Based on these we estimate the quenching factor $Q(p_\perp)$ when the medium is undergoing longitudinal expansion governed by master rate equations. In contrast to the case of chemically equilibrated plasma investigated earlier by Mustafa and Thoma \cite{mus} we find less quenching because our calculated $Q(p_\perp)$ is always great…
We have developed the Monte Carlo simulation program JEWEL 1.0 (Jet Evolution With Energy Loss), which interfaces a perturbative final state parton shower with medium effects occurring in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. This is done by comparing for each jet fragment the probability of further perturbative splitting with the density-dependent probability of scattering with the medium. A simple hadronisation mechanism is included. In the absence of medium effects, we validate JEWEL against a set of benchmark jet measurements. For elastic interactions with the medium, we characterise no…
The Monte Carlo model JEWEL 1.0 (Jet Evolution With Energy Loss) simulates parton shower evolution in the presence of a dense QCD medium. In its current form medium interactions are modelled as elastic scattering based on perturbative matrix elements and a simple prescription for medium induced gluon radiation. The parton shower is interfaced with a hadronisation model. In the absence of medium effects JEWEL is shown to reproduce jet measurements at LEP. The collisional energy loss is consistent with analytic calculations, but with JEWEL we can go a step further and characterise also jet-induc…
In the article by M. G. Mustafa published in Phys. Rev. C {\bf 72}, 014905 (2005) the author has estimated the total energy loss of a charm quark and quenching of hadron spectra due to the collisional energy loss of energetic partons in an expanding quark-gluon plasma employing Fokker-Planck equation. We wish to point out through this Comment that some of conceptual and numerical results of the said paper are unreliable. For the sake of clarity our discussion will focus on the massless case (although a few remarks on the $m\neq 0$ case are also made).
We argue that in the measured $p_T$ domain of RHIC, collisional rather than the radiative energy loss is the dominant mechanism for jet quenching. Accordingly we calculate nuclear suppression factor for light hadrons by taking only the elastic energy loss in sharp contrast with the previous calculations where only the radiative loss are considered.
We investigate the energy losses of $b$ and $c$ quarks at hard collisions with gluons and light quarks in quark-gluon plasma produced in central $Au + Au$ collisions at RHIC energy($\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV). As the coupling constant at hard collision in the perturbative QCD is limited by Landau pole at momenta $Q^{2} = Λ^{2}$, we use the analytic models of QCD, where the Landau pole is absent. We calculate the energy losses of $b$ and $c$ quarks in analytic model of QCD at $Q^{2} \ge Λ^{2}$. At calculations we use the effective quasiparticle model. We use at calculations of total nuclear modi…
We perform a comparison of the radiative and collisional parton energy losses in an expanding quark-gluon plasma. The radiative energy loss is calculated within the light-cone path integral approach. The collisional energy loss is calculated using the Bjorken method with an accurate treatment of the binary collision kinematics. Our numerical results demonstrate that for RHIC and LHC conditions the collisional energy loss is relatively small in comparison to the radiative one. We find an enhancement of the heavy quark radiative energy loss as compared to that of the light quarks at high energie…
Collisional broadening in QCD plasmas leads to the emission of medium induced radiation, which governs the energy loss of highly energetic particles or jets. While recent studies have obtained non-perturbative contributions to the collisional broadening kernel $C(b_\bot)$ using lattice simulation of the dimensionally reduced long-distance effective theory of QCD, Electrostatic QCD (EQCD), so far all phenomenological calculations of jet quenching rely on perturbative determinations of the collisional broadening kernel. By matching the short-distance behavior of the lattice extracted EQCD broade…
Heavy ion collisions at RHIC and at the LHC give access to the medium-induced suppression patterns of heavy-flavored single inclusive hadron spectra at high transverse momentum. This opens novel opportunities for a detailed characterization of the medium produced in the collision. In this note, we point out that the capacity of a QCD medium to absorb the recoil of a partonic projectile is an independent signature, which may differ for different media at the same density. In particular, while the mass hierarchy (i.e., the projectile mass dependence) of radiative energy loss depends solely on a …
We perform a joint jet tomographic analysis of the data on the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ from PHENIX at RHIC and ALICE at LHC. The computations are performed accounting for radiative and collisional parton energy loss with running coupling constant. Our results show that the observed slow variation of $R_{AA}$ from RHIC to LHC indicates that the QCD coupling constant is suppressed in the quark-gluon plasma produced at LHC.
We study the collisional aspects of jet quenching in a high energy nuclear collision, especially in the final state pion gas. The jet has a large energy, and acquires momentum transverse to its axis more effectively by multiple soft collisions than by few hard scatterings (as known from analogous systems such as J/ψproduction at Hera). Such regime of large E and small momentum transfer corresponds to Regge kinematics and is characteristically dominated by the pomeron. From this insight we estimate the jet quenching parameter in the hadron medium (largely a pion gas) at the end of the collision…
Cosmic rays in the regime of 10^19-10^20 eV should not exist, according to the GZK bound. Conflicts between data and the bound have led to suggestions that laws of physics must be modified. We find that physical processes neglected in the early history terminate the LPM effect, important in calibrating the energy of electromagnetic and hadronic showers in the GZK energy regime. The processes neglected are the direct losses of electrons and positrons, overlooked by LPM and greatly augmented by ultra-high energy circumstances. We present an exact formula for direct energy losses of e^+e^- pairs …
The angular structure of collisional and radiative energy losses of a hard parton jet propagating through the quark-gluon plasma is analyzed. The possibility to observe the energy losses of quark- and gluon-initiated jets in dense QCD-matter (jet quenching) measuring the characteristics of real hadronic jets in ultra-relativistic collisions of nuclei is investigated. In particular, using calorimetric studies of jet + jet, gamma + jet and Z + jet channels is discussed.
RHIC experiments have established jet quenching as a fundamental tool in the study of hot matter in heavy-ion collisions. The energy reached is enough for high-pT inclusive particle studies and one- or two-particle correlations up to pT= 10-20 GeV. The corresponding data are successfully described by a formalism based on radiative energy losses. This formalism needs, however, to be improved for more exclusive observables, in particular for the reconstructed jet properties. Jet reconstruction is a new branch in heavy-ion collisions with very high expectations as a tool for the characterization …
Electroweak boson-tagged jet measurements provide a promising experimental channel to accurately study the physics of jet production and propagation in dense QCD medium. In this talk, we present theoretical predictions for the nuclear-induced attenuation of the differential cross section for isolated photon-tagged and $\rm Z^0$-tagged jet production in heavy ion collisions, and provide theoretical interpretations to the recent LHC data. We demonstrate quantitatively the significance of collisional and radiative energy losses, as revealed in the strong momentum asymmetry $dσ/dx_{VJ}$ and nuclea…
We study the effect of the magnetic field on the collisional energy loss of heavy quark (HQ) moving in a magnetized thermal partonic medium. This is investigated in the strong field approximation where the lowest Landau level (LLL) becomes relevant. We work in the limit $g\sqrt{eB}\ll T\ll \sqrt{eB}$ which is relevant for heavy ion collisions. Effects of the magnetic field are incorporated through the resummed gluon propagator in which the dominant contribution arises from the quark loop. We also take the approximation $\sqrt{eB}\ll M$, M being the HQ mass, so that the HQ is not Landau quantiz…
The LHC data on jet fragmentation function and jet shapes in PbPb collisions at center-of-mass energy 2.76 TeV per nucleon pair are analyzed and interpreted in the frameworks of PYQUEN jet quenching model. A specific modification of longitudinal and radial jet profiles in most central PbPb collisions as compared with pp data is close to that obtained with PYQUEN simulations taking into account wide-angle radiative and collisional partonic energy loss. The contribution of radiative and collisional loss to the medium-modified intra-jet structure is estimated.
We calculate and compare bremsstrahlung and collisional energy loss of hard partons traversing a quark-gluon plasma. Our treatment of both processes is complete at leading order in the coupling and accounts for the probabilistic nature of the jet energy loss. We find that the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ for neutral $π^0$ production in heavy ion collisions is sensitive to the inclusion of collisional and radiative energy loss contributions while the averaged energy loss only slightly increases if collisional energy loss is included for parent parton energies $E\gg T$. These results are…
The ratios of $p/π$ at large transverse momentum in central $Au+Au$ collisions at RHIC are studied in the framework of jet quenching based on a next-to-leading order pQCD parton model. It is shown that theoretical calculations with a gluon energy loss larger than the quark energy loss will naturally lead to a smaller $p/π$ ratios at large transverse momentum in $Au+Au$ collisions than those in $p+p$ collisions at the same energy. Scenarios with equal energy losses for gluons and quarks and a strong jet conversion are both explored and it is demonstrated in both scenarios $p/π$ ratios at high $…
A strong suppression of non-photonic electrons in Au+Au collisions is observed at RHIC. This is in disagreement with the expected dominance of the energy loss via gluon radiation, which predicts a much weaker suppression of heavy flavours due to the dead cone effect. However, collisional energy loss is also important, as demonstrated recently by the Soft Colour Interaction Jet Quenching model. Based on this model we show that collisional energy loss of charm quarks gives a suppression of electrons of the observed magnitude, but the contribution from beauty decays, which dominates at intermedia…
While experimental observations, such as the mass hierarchy effect, are attributed and analyzed within radiative models, their interpretation crucially depends on collisional energy loss contribution, which is often neglected in such analyses. To our knowledge, neither a (direct) simple relation between collisional energy loss and heavy quark mass is established, nor an observable that quantifies this effect. On the other hand, the upcoming high-luminosity measurements at RHIC and LHC will generate heavy flavor data with unprecedented precision, providing an opportunity to utilize high-pT heav…
Collisional energy loss of heavy partons (charm and bottom quarks) has been determined within the framework of semi-classical transport theory implying Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) collisional kernel. Hot QCD medium effects have been incorporated while employing a quasi-particle description of the medium in terms of effective gluons, quarks and antiquarks with respective temperature dependent effective fugacities. The momentum dependence of the energy loss for charm and bottom quark has been investigated. It is observed that with the increase in momentum of the heavy quarks, the loss increases …
e investigate the energy loss of quark and gluon jets in quark-gluon plasma produced in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC energy. We use the physical characteristic of initial and mixed phases, which were found in effective quasiparticle model for SPS and RHIC energy. At investigation of energy loss we take into account also the production of hot glue at first stage. The energy loss in expanding plasma is calculated in dominant first order of radiation intensity with accounting of finite kinematic bounds. We calculate the suppression of $π^0$ - spectra with moderate high $p_{\perp}$, which is c…
We revisit the question of the measured, unexpectedly large, heavy flavor suppression, $R_{AA}(p_T) \ll 1$, in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and compare two new theoretical approaches to the $D$- and $B$-meson quenching. In the first model, radiative energy loss, collisional energy loss and heavy quark-resonance interactions are combined to evaluate the drag and diffusion coefficients in the quark-gluon plasma and the mixed phase. These are applied in a relativistic Fokker-Planck equation to simulate the heavy $c$- and $b$-quark suppression rate and elliptic flow $v_2(p_T)$. In the second…
We study the medium-induced energy loss $-ΔE_0(L_p)$ suffered by a heavy quark produced at initial time in a quark-gluon plasma, and escaping the plasma after travelling the distance $L_p$. The heavy quark is treated classically, and within the same framework $-ΔE_0(L_p)$ consistently includes: the loss from standard collisional processes, initial bremsstrahlung due to the sudden acceleration of the quark, and transition radiation. The radiative loss {\it induced by rescatterings} $-ΔE_{rad}(L_p)$ is not included in our study. For a ultrarelativistic heavy quark with momentum $p \gsim 10 {\rm …
Heavy flavor physics in high-energy heavy-ion collisions is a promising and active area to study the mass dependence of the "jet quenching" effects both at the RHIC and the LHC. In this talk, we present the first theoretical study on the $D^0$ meson radial distributions relative to the jet axis both in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV, where a nice agreement of our results with experimental data is observed. The in-medium parton propagations are described by a Monte Carlo transport model which uses the next-to-leading order (NLO) plus parton shower (PS) event generator SHER…
We calculate photons from jet-plasma interaction considering collisional and radiative energy loss of jet parton. The phase space distribution of the participating jet is dynamically evolved by solving Fokker-Planck equation. We treat the strong coupling constant ($α_s$) as function of momentum and temperature while calculating the drag and diffusion coefficients. It is observed that the quenching factor is substantially modified as compared to the case when $α_s$ is taken as constant. It is shown that the Phenix data is reasonably well reproduced when contributions from all the relevant sourc…
