When two graphene sheets are twisted relative to each other by a small angle, enhanced correlations lead to superconductivity whose origin remains under debate. Here, we derive some general constraints on superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), independent of its underlying mechanism. Neglecting weak coupling between valleys, the global symmetry group of TBG consists of independent spin rotations in each valley in addition to valley charge rotations, $ {\rm SU}(2) \times {\rm SU}(2) \times {\rm U}_V(1) $. This symmetry is further enhanced to a full ${\rm SU}(4)$ in the idealized chiral limit. In both cases, we show that any charge $2e$ pairing must break the global symmetry. Additionally, if the pairing is unitary the resulting superconductor admits fractional vortices. This leads to the following general statement: Any superconducting condensate in either symmetry class has to satisfy one of three possibilities: (i) the superconducting pairing is non-unitary, (ii) the superconducting condensate has charge $2e$ but admits at least half quantum vortices which carry a flux of $h/4e$, or (iii) the superconducting condensate has charge $2me$, $m>1$, with vortices carrying $h/2me$ flux. The latter possibility can be realized by a symmetric charge $4e$ superconductor ($m=2$). Non-unitary pairing (i) is expected in TBG for superconductors observed in the vicinity of flavor polarized states. On the other hand, in the absence of flavor polarization, e.g. in the vicinity of charge neutrality, one of the two exotic possibilities (ii) and (iii) is expected. We sketch how all three scenarios can be realized in different limits within a strong coupling theory of superconductivity based on skyrmions. Finally we discuss the effect of symmetry lowering anisotropies and experimental implications of these scenarios.
This Letter theoretically discusses quasiparticle states and nuclear spin relaxation rates $T_1^{-1}$ in a quasi-one-dimensional superconductor (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ under a magnetic field applied parallel to the conduction chains. We study the effects of Josephson-type vortices on $T_1^{-1}$ by solving the Bogoliubov de Gennes equation for $p$-, $d$- or $f$-wave pairing interactions. In the presence of line nodes in pairing functions, $T_1^{-1}$ is proportional to $T$ in sufficiently low temperatures because quasiparticles induced by vortices at the Fermi energy relax spins. We also try to identi…
We investigate the twisted bilayer graphene by a two-orbital Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. The model is studied near 1/4 band filling by using the singular-mode functional renormalization group theory. Spin-triplet $f$-wave pairing is found from weak to moderate coupling limit of the local interactions, and is associated with the Hund's rule coupling and incommensurate spin fluctuations at moderate momenta.
We investigate phonon-mediated Cooper pairing in flat electronic band systems by solving the full-bandwidth multiband Eliashberg equations for superconductivity in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene using a realistic tight-binding model. We find that Cooper pairing away from the Fermi level contributes decisively to superconductivity by enhancing the critical temperature and ensures a robust finite superfluid density. We show that this pairing yields particle-hole asymmetric superconducting domes in the temperature-gating phase diagram and gives rise to distinct spectroscopic signatures in t…
The pairing symmetry of an effective Hamiltonian for interacting fermions on a twisted bilayer graphene superlattice is studied with the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. The model has the symmetry of a triangle lattice and a nearly-flat low energy band, features which underlie the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene superlattice. We show that the low temperature phase is insulating at half-filling, even for relatively weak interactions. The natures of the spin and pairing correlations upon doping are determined, and exhibit an electron-hole asymmetry consistent with experiment. Among t…
In this work, we study the magnetic-impurity resonance states in superconducting phase of twisted bilayer graphene for different pairing symmetries. Using the two-orbital model proposed by Yuan and Fu in [Phys. Rev. B 98, 045103 (2018)], we find that when the impurity is located at one site of the emergent honeycomb lattice, the spacial distributions of the resonance states will break both the threefold and twofold rotation symmetries of $D_3$ group for pairing symmetries which belong to the irreducible representations of this point group. When the magnetic impurity is located at the center of…
Superconducting transition temperature is calculated for differently doped bilayer cuprates. Superexchange is assumed to be the dominating mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity, but the contribution from the phonon potential is not negligible, which qualitatively explains the observed weak isotopic effect. The calculated value 2$Δ_{max}/k_B T_C \simeq 4.5$ is close to the experiment in the case of optimum doping.
The bilayer Hubbard model with an intra-layer hopping $t$ and an inter-layer hopping $t_\perp$ provides an interesting testing ground for several aspects of what has been called unconventional superconductivity. One can study the type of pair structures which arise when there are multiple Fermi surfaces. One can also examine the pairing for a system in which the structure of the spin-fluctuation spectral weight can be changed. Using a dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo approximation, we find that near half-filling, if the splitting between the bonding and anti-bonding bands $t_\perp/t$ is sma…
A real-space formulation is given for the recently discussed exciton condensate in a symmetrically biased graphene bilayer. We show that in the continuum limit an oddly-quantized vortex in this condensate binds exactly one zero mode per valley index of the bilayer. In the full lattice model the zero modes are split slightly due to intervalley mixing. We support these results by an exact numerical diagonalization of the lattice Hamiltonian. We also discuss the effect of the zero modes on the charge content of these vortices and deduce some of their interesting properties.
We study the superconducting pairing symmetry in twisted bilayer graphene by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation for all electrons in moiré supercells. With increasing the pairing potential, the system evolves from the mixed nontopological $d+id$ and $p+ip$ phase to the $s+p+d$ phase via the first-order phase transition. In the time-reversal symmetry breaking $d+id$ and $p+ip$ phase, vortex and antivortex lattices accompanying spontaneous supercurrent are induced by the twist. The superconducting order parameter is nonuniform in the moiré unit cell. Nevertheless, the superconducting gap …
The superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of bilayers comprising underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 films capped by a thin heavily overdoped metallic La1.65Sr0.35CuO4 layer, is found to increase with respect to Tc of the bare underdoped films. The highest Tc is achieved for x = 0.12, close to the 'anomalous' 1/8 doping level, and exceeds that of the optimally-doped bare film. Our data suggest that the enhanced superconductivity is confined to the interface between the layers. We attribute the effect to a combination of the high pairing scale in the underdoped layer with an enhanced phase stiffness …
A system of self-consistent integral equations for the superconducting gap is formulated and solved taking account of the instability of the normal phase of bilayered cuprates against charge-density waves. The critical parameters are calculated as a function of the wave vector, temperature, and doping index. It is found that the region in which superconductivity coexists with d-type charge-density waves depends strongly on the doping index. The effective energy-gap parameter, determined as the interval between the peaks of the density of states, can have a local minimum at temperatures T$<$T$_…
Interacting many-body systems combining confined and extended dimensions, such as ladders and few layer systems are characterized by enhanced quantum fluctuations, which often result in interesting collective properties. Recently two-dimensional bilayer systems, such as twisted bilayer graphene or ultracold atoms, have sparked a lot of interest because they can host rich phase diagrams, including unconventional superconductivity. Here we present a theoretical proposal for realizing high temperature pairing of fermions in a class of bilayer Hubbard models. We introduce a general, highly efficie…
We investigate the interplay of magnetic fluctuations and Cooper pairing in twisted bilayer graphene from a purely microscopic model within a large-scale tight-binding approach resolving the Ångström scale. For local onsite repulsive interactions and using the random-phase approximation for spin fluctuations, we derive a microscopic effective pairing interaction that we use for self-consistent solutions of the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equations of superconductivity. We study the predominant pairing types as function of interaction strength, temperature and band filling. For large regions of this p…
One of the outstanding questions in the study of twisted bilayer graphene -- from both experimental and theoretical points of view -- is the nature of its superconducting phase. In this work we perform a comprehensive synthesis of existing experiments, and argue that experimental constraints are strong enough to allow the structure of the superconducting order parameter to be nearly uniquely determined. In particular, we argue that the order parameter is nodal, and is formed from an admixture of spin-singlet and spin-triplet Cooper pairs. This argument is made on phenomenological grounds, with…
Based on our revised perturbational-band theory, we study possible pairing states driven by interaction in the electron-doped quasicrystal 30\degree-twisted bilayer graphene. Our mean-field study on the related t-J model predicts that, the beneath-van-Hove and beyond-van-Hove low doping regimes are covered by the chiral $d+id$ and $g+ig$ topological superconductivities (TSCs) respectively. The $g+ig$-TSC possesses a pairing angular momentum 4, and hence following each effective $C_{12}$- rotation by $Δϕ=nπ/6$, the pairing phase changes $4Δϕ$. This intriguing TSC is novel, as it belongs to a sp…
Using the {\it ab initio} anisotropic Eliashberg theory including Coulomb interactions, we investigate the electron-phonon interaction and the pairing mechanism in the recently-reported superconducting Ca-intercalated bilayer graphene. We find that C$_6$CaC$_6$ can support phonon-mediated superconductivity with a critical temperature $T_{\rm c}=$6.8-8.1~K, in good agreement with experimental data. Our calculations indicate that the low-energy Ca$_{xy}$ vibrations are critical to the pairing, and that it should be possible to resolve two distinct superconducting gaps on the electron and hole Fe…
We show that unconventional nematic superconductors with multi-component order parameter in lattices with three-fold and six-fold rotational symmetries support a charge-$4e$ vestigial superconducting phase above $T_c$. The charge-$4e$ state, which is a condensate of four-electron bound states that preserve the rotational symmetry of the lattice, is nearly degenerate with a competing vestigial nematic state, which is non-superconducting and breaks the rotational symmetry. This robust result is the consequence of a hidden discrete symmetry in the Ginzburg-Landau theory, which permutes quantities…
It was recently shown that a chiral topological phase emerges from the coupling of two twisted monolayers of superconducting Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ for certain twist angles. In this work, we reveal the behavior of such twisted superconducting bilayers with $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing symmetry in presence of applied magnetic field. Specifically, we show that the emergent vortex matter can serve as smoking gun for detection of topological superconductivity in such bilayers. Moreover, we report two distinct skyrmionic states that characterize the chiral topological phase, and provide full accoun…
Using the functional renormalization group technique we demonstrate a route for potentially high-temperature odd-parity superconductivity in ferromagnetic materials caused by repulsive electron interactions, where the superconducting pairing is driven by charge-density wave fluctuations. Our model is directly applicable to a lightly cobalt-doped LaNiO$_3$ bilayer grown in the (111) direction. As the on-site repulsive interaction grows, a charge-density wave state with a charge pattern that respects all point-group symmetries of the bilayer is replaced by a superconducting state with an f-wave …
Starting from a continuum-model description, we develop a microscopic weak-coupling theory for superconductivity in twisted double-bilayer graphene. We study both electron-phonon and entirely electronic pairing mechanisms. In each case, the leading superconducting instability transforms under the trivial representation, $A$, of the point group $C_3$ of the system, while the subleading pairing phases belong to the $E$ channel. We explicitly compute the momentum dependence of the associated order parameters and find that the leading state has no nodal points for electron-phonon pairing but exhib…
We study the spatial distribution of supercurrent circulated around an Abrikosov vortex in an SF bilayer in perpendicular magnetic field. Within the dirty limit regime and circular cell approximation for the vortex lattice, we derive the conditions when the Usadel equations the F layer can be solved analytically. Using the obtained solutions, we demonstrate the possibility of reversal of direction of proximity induced supercurrents around the vortex in the F layer compared to that in the S-layer. The direction of currents can be controlled either by varying transparency of the SF interface or …
In the superconducting regime of FeTe$_{(1-x)}$Se$_x$, there exist two types of vortices which are distinct by the presence or absence of zero energy states in their core. To understand their origin, we examine the interplay of Zeeman coupling and superconducting pairings in three-dimensional metals with band inversion. Weak Zeeman fields are found to suppress the intra-orbital spin-singlet pairing, known to localize the states at the ends of the vortices on the surface. On the other hand, an orbital-triplet pairing is shown to be stable against Zeeman interactions, but leads to delocalized ze…
The velocities of the quasiparticles that form Cooper pairs in a superconductor are revealed by the upper critical magnetic field. Here we use this property to assess superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), which has been observed over a range of moiré band filling, twist angle, and screening environment conditions. We find that for pairing mechanisms that are unrelated to correlations within the MATBG flat bands, minima in an average Fermi velocity $v_F^* \equiv k_B T_c \ell_c /\hbar $, where $\ell_c$ is the magnetic length at the critical perpendicular magnetic fie…
We study the proximity-induced superconducting state in a general bilayer -- conventional $s$-wave superconductor hybrid structure. For the bilayer we include a general parabolic dispersion, Rashba spin-orbit coupling, and finite layer tunneling as well as the possibility to apply a bias potential and a magnetic Zeeman field, in order to address experimentally relevant bilayer systems, ranging from topological insulator thin films to generic double quantum well systems. By extracting the proximity-induced anomalous Green's function in the bilayer we show on a very rich structure for the superc…
In a bilayer system of fermionic dipoles, a full control over the strength of the attractive interactions between two layers leads to the BCS-BEC crossover. Here, using the BCS mean field theory, we study such a crossover in symmetric bilayers of ultracold dipolar fermions with their dipole moments being perpendicular to layers. In particular, we investigate how the pairing between two layers and the many-body screening of interlayer interaction affect each other. We compare results for pairings obtained with three different approximations for the interlayer interactions namely, bare dipole-di…
We study the electronic instabilities of doped bilayer silicene using the random phase approximation. In contrast to the singlet $d+id'$ superconductivity at the low doping region, we find that the system is an itinerant ferromagnet in the narrow doping regions around the Van Hove singularities, and a triplet $p+ip'$ superconductor in the vicinity of these regions. Adding a weak Kane-Mele spin-orbit coupling to the system further singles out the time-reversal invariant equal-spin helical $p+ip'$ pairing as the leading instability. The triplet pairing identified here is driven by the ferromagne…
We study $d$-wave superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene and reveal phenomena that arise due to the moiré superlattice. In the $d$-wave pairing, the relative motion (RM) of two electrons in a Cooper pair can have either $d+id$ or $d-id$ symmetry with opposite angular momenta. Due to the enlarged moiré superlattice, the center-of-mass motion (COMM) can also carry a finite angular momentum while preserving the moiré periodicity. By matching the total angular momentum, which has contributions from both the RM and the COMM, Cooper pairs with $d+id$ and $d-id$ RMs are intrinsically coupled i…
Vortex dynamics in a bilayer thin film superconductor are studied through a Josephson-coupled double layer XY model. A renormalization group analysis shows that there are three possible states associated with the relative phase of the layers: a free vortex phase, a logarithmically confined vortex-antivortex pair phase, and a linearly confined phase. The phases may be distinguished by measuring the resistance to counterflow current. For a geometry in which current is injected and removed from the two layers at the same edge by an ideal (dissipationless) lead, we argue that the three phases yiel…
Unconventional superconductivity often arises from Cooper pairing between neighboring atomic sites, stipulating a characteristic pairing symmetry in the reciprocal space. The twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) presents a new setting where superconductivity emerges on the flat bands whose Wannier wavefunctions spread over many graphene unit cells, forming the so-called Moiré pattern. To unravel how Wannier states form Cooper pairs, we study the interplay between electronic, structural, and pairing instabilities in TBG. For comparisons, we also study graphene on boron-nitride (GBN) possessing a diff…
The continuum theory of domain structures in ferromagnetic/superconducting bilayers fails when the equilibrium domain size becomes comparable with effective penetration depth $Λ$. Instead, a lattice of discrete vortices must be considered. Here, we report our results on the discrete vortex lattices in stripe domain structures of ferromagnetic/superconducting bilayers. The vortices are assumed to be situated periodically on chains in stripe domains. We study the configurations containing up to three chains per domain, and calculate their equilibrium energies, equilibrium domain size and vortex …
Identifying the microscopic mechanism for superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) is an outstanding open problem. While MATBG exhibits a rich phase-diagram, driven partly by the strong interactions relative to the electronic bandwidth, its single-particle properties are unique and likely play an important role in some of the phenomenological complexity. Some of the salient features include an electronic bandwidth smaller than the characteristic phonon bandwidth and a non-trivial structure of the underlying Bloch wavefunctions. We perform a theoretical study of the coo…
Ni-Ga bilayers are a versatile platform for exploring the competition between strongly antagonistic ferromagnetic and superconducting phases. We characterize the impact of this competition on the transport properties of highly-ballistic Al/Al2O3(/EuS)/Ni-Ga tunnel junctions from both experimental and theoretical points of view. While the conductance spectra of junctions comprising Ni (3 nm)-Ga (60 nm) bilayers can be well understood within the framework of earlier results, which associate the emerging main conductance maxima with the junction films' superconducting gaps, thinner Ni (1.6 nm)-Ga…
We investigate the superconductivity (SC) driven by correlation effects in electron-doped bilayer BiH near a type-II van Hove singularity (vHS). By functional renormalization group, we find triplet $p$-wave pairing prevails in the interaction parameter space, except for spin density wave (SDW) closer to the vHS or when the interaction is too strong. Because of the large atomic spin-orbital coupling (SOC), the $p$-wave pairing occurs between equal-spin electrons, and is chiral and two-fold degenerate. The chiral state supports in-gap edge states, even though the low energy bands in the SC state…
We report the observation of a novel effect in the bilayer Pb-Bi2212 high-TC superconductor by means of angle-resolved photoemission with circularly polarized excitation. Different scattering rates, determined as a function of energy separately for the bonding and antibonding copper-oxygen bands, strongly imply that the dominating scattering channel is odd with respect to layer exchange within a bilayer. This is inconsistent with a phonon-mediated scattering and favours the participation of the odd collective spin excitations in the scattering mechanism in near-nodal regions of the k-space, su…
Using scanning tunneling microscopy and Ginzburg-Landau simulations we explore vortex configurations in magnetically coupled NbSe$_2$-Permalloy superconductor-ferromagnet bilayer. The Permalloy film with stripe domain structure induces periodic local magnetic induction in the superconductor creating a series of pinning-antipinning channels for externally added magnetic flux quanta. Such laterally confined Abrikosov vortices form quasi-1D arrays (chains). The transitions between multichain states occur through propagation of kinks at the intermediate fields. At high fields we show that the syst…
The Josephson current is investigated in a superconducting graphene bilayer where pristine graphene sheets can make in-plane or out-of-plane displacements with respect to each other. The superconductivity can be of an intrinsic nature, or due to a proximity effect. The results demonstrate that the supercurrent responds qualitatively differently to relative displacement if the superconductivity is due to either intralayer or interlayer spin-singlet electron-electron pairing, thus providing a tool to distinguish between the two mechanisms. Specifically, both the AA and AB stacking orders are stu…
